Time use surveys -despite having represented a turning point in the study of inequalities between women and men- continue hiding care times and subtracting relevance to the qualitative dimensions of time. This due both, to the ideological conception that lies behind this type of studies that consider more relevant market process as to surveys methodology. This article analyzes the theoretical model that lies behind time use surveys and, consequently, the study of the conceptual aspects, the methodology and the potential of these surveys as an analytical instrument. The aim is to unraveling the limitations presented by the surveys to take in account the subjective dimensions of time related to the wellbeing of  people.

The fieldwork survey group of the Ulster Archaeological Society carried out a second season of field surveys at four sites in 2007. These were a rath at Lisnabreeny, Co Down; the Yew Terraces at Castle Ward, Co Down; Yellow Jack’s cairn on Divis Mountain, Co Antrim; and stone circles and stone rows at Davagh Lower, Co Tyrone

Statisticians should be involved at all stages of sample surveys and courses on surveys need to reflect this by covering both theoretical and practical aspects. Teaching methods could include some hands-on experience, directed reading, and use of software designed for teaching or professional use, as well as more traditional lecturing. Suggestions are given for a course of about fifty hours.

The use of waters around Lundy by dolphins and porpoises was measured using summer shore-based watches and passive acoustic surveillance between July 2011 and July 2012. Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) were the only cetacean species observed during shore-based surveys. C-PODs moored on the Ethel and MV Robert wrecks close to the Lundy coast showed a peak in delphinid vocal activity during August 2011. Passive acoustic detections of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) were highest during ebb tidal phases and most often associated with the tidal rip at the south of the island. These findings show tidal and monthly influences on odontocete behaviour and highlight the value of continuous, passive acoustic monitoring for these highly mobile marine predators around Lundy.

A statistical comparison of standing stock density estimates (Kg/hectare) from 26 UNDP/FAO 1%9 thru 70 and 63 EAFFRO 1976 bottom trawl surveys revealed the following; 1) Statistically significant differences between mean density values at 4 of 7 depths {4-9 to 30-39 m}. 2) The 1969 thru 70 UNDP/FAO Values were higher at the 4 levels. 3) No statistically significant menn density value differences at 3 depths (40-49 to 60-69 m), but decreased values for the 1976 EAFFRO survey at 40-49 and 50-59 m depth. It was concluded from these comparisons that no capital investment should be made into a trawler industry for fish meal production in the Kenya waters of Lake Victoria until further bottom trawl surveys can be conducted to either substantiate or disapprove these differences over the six year time span.

Motivated by a recent claim by Muller et al (2010 Nature 463 926-9) that an atom interferometer can serve as an atom clock to measure the gravitational redshift with an unprecedented accuracy, we provide a representation-free description of the Kasevich-Chu interferometer based on operator algebra. We use this framework to show that the operator product determining the number of atoms at the exit ports of the interferometer is a c-number phase factor whose phase is the sum of only two phases: one is due to the acceleration of the phases of the laser pulses and the other one is due to the acceleration of the atom. This formulation brings out most clearly that this interferometer is an accelerometer or a gravimeter. Moreover, we point out that in different representations of quantum mechanics such as the position or the momentum representation the phase shift appears as though it originates from different physical phenomena. Due to this representation dependence conclusions concerning an enhanced accuracy derived in a specific representation are unfounded.
