Origin of the peculiar eccentricity distribution of the inner cold Kuiper belt

Dawson and Murray-Clay (Dawson and Murray-Clay [2012]. Astrophys. J., 750, 43) pointed out that the inner part of the cold population in the Kuiper belt (that with semi major axis a < 43.5 AU) has orbital eccentricities significantly smaller than the limit imposed by stability constraints. Here, we confirm their result by looking at the orbital distribution and stability properties in proper element space. We show that the observed distribution could have been produced by the slow sweeping of the 4/7 mean motion resonance with Neptune that accompanied the end of Neptune's migration process. The orbital distribution of the hot Kuiper belt is not significantly affected in this process, for the reasons discussed in the main text. Therefore, the peculiar eccentricity distribution of the inner cold population cannot be unequivocally interpreted as evidence that the cold population formed in situ and was only moderately excited in eccentricity; it can simply be the signature of Neptune's radial motion, starting from a moderately eccentric orbit. We discuss how this agrees with a scenario of giant planet evolution following a dynamical instability and, possibly, with the radial transport of the cold population. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. In this article it is examined the work Persepolis, animation movie which summarizes the four volumes of the homonymous work launched in the form of comics in France, between 2000 and 2003. Narrated by the author Marjane Satrapi, it portraits the 15 years following the events of 1979 in Iran, from her personal perspective. Belonging to a left-wing social group, westernized according to the Iranian standards, she saw its utopias die as the Islamic Revolution won. However, during an auto exile in Vienna in her teen ages, she realized that the vaunted western liberty also charged its price. Considering Persepolis narrative literally as a look into perspective, it is debated the political and social aspects of the relationship east / west in a particular relation with the work of Edward Said.

O retorno: identidades à deriva no romance português contemporâneo

This paper concentrates on the analysis of how the typical voices of History are manifested, which is achieved by the aesthetics of the contemporary Portuguese narrative, as it aims at the same time the reflexion and the reformulation of the Lusitanian cultural imaginary in the course of O retorno, a novel by Dulce Maria Cardoso. The hypothesis that arises is that the trajectory of Rui’s individual experience, as wells as the other’s characters “retornados” looking for identity, is parallel to the proposed revision of the Portuguese nation collective cultural imaginary in the decolonization context, after the 25th April Revolution. It is its objective to investigate how the historical processes concerned to the concepts of exile and uprooting, displacement and belonging (BAUMAN, 2005) are fictionalized in the novel, seen as motes for Rui’s pursuit for identity and for the revision of the Portuguese Destiny theme

Dinâmica de rotação de exoplanetas tipo terrestre com perturbação de terceiro corpo

In this work we study some topics of Celestial Mechanics, namely the problem of rigid body rotation and “spin-orbit” resonances. Emphasis is placed on the problem formulation and applications to some exoplanets with physical parameters (e.g. mass and radius) compatible with a terrestrial type constitution (e.g. rock) belonging to multiple planetary systems. The approach is both analytical and numerical. The analytical part consists of: i) the deduction of the equation of motion for the rotation problem of a spherical body with no symmetry, disturbed by a central body; ii) modeling the same problem by including a third-body in the planet-star system; iii) formulation of the concept of “spin-orbit” resonance in which the orbital period of the planet is an integer multiple of the rotation’s period. Topics of dynamical systems (e.g. equilibrium points, chaos, surface sections, etc.) will be included at this stage. In the numerical part simulations are performed with numerical models developed in the previous analytical section. As a first step we consider the orbit of the planet not perturbed by a third-body in the star-planet system. In this case the eccentricity and orbital semi-major axis of the planet are constants. Here the technique of surface sections, widely used in dynamical systems are applied. Next, we consider the action of a third body, developing a more realistic model for planetary rotation. The results in both cases are compared. Since the technique of disturbed surface sections is no longer applicable, we quantitatively evaluate the evolution of the characteristic angles of rotation (e.g. physical libration) by studying the evolution of individual orbits in the dynamically important regions of phase space, the latter obtained in the undisturbed case

Taking into consideration the previous critical interpretations about Baudelaire’s poem called “Le cygne” (Benjamin, Oehler, Barbosa), this article highlights some relevant aspects about allegorical structure, seeking to demonstrate how the feeling of exile and the melancholy, which define the poetic individual and which represent underlying themes in Baudelaire’s poem, can be read through a frame of reference which links both historical-political and psychoanalytical interpretations.
