Solid-state Ln(L)(3) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y, and L is 3-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, complexometry and elemental analysis were used to characterize the compounds. In order to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, polymorphic transformation, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.

The thermal structure, heat content and stability were studied in Lakes Dom Helvécio and Carioca during an annual cycle. It was found that the maximum heat content, stability and work of the wind in Lake Dom Helvécio correspond to two, four and four times, respectively, the values for the Lake Carioca. These difference can be attributed to morphometric differences in the lakes. A long-term record of heat content and stability for lake Carioca is also presented. Diel variations were studied in summer and winter. The tropicality of the lakes is discussed and compared with other lacustrine systems. © 1989 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Solid state compounds were prepared of Ln-4-MeO-BP, where Ln is a trivalent lanthanide (except promethium) or yttrium, and 4-MeO-BP is 4-methoxybenzylidenepyruvate. Thermogravimetry-derivative thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and other methods of analysis have been used to characterize and to study the thermal stability and thermal decomposition of these compounds. © 1993.

High efficiency gas turbine based systems, utility deregulation and more stringent environmental regulations strongly favor the use of natural gas over coal and other solid fuels in new electricity generators. Solid fuels could continue to compete, however, if a low cost gasifier fed by low cost feedstocks can be coupled with a gas turbine system. We examine on-site gasification of coal with other domestic fuels in an indirectly heated gasifier as a strategy to lower the costs of solid fuel systems. The systematics of gaseous pyrolysis yields assembled with the help of thermal measurement data and molecular models suggests blending carbonaceous fuels such as coal, coke or char with oxygenated fuels such as biomass, RDF, MSW, or dried sewage sludge. Such solid fuel blending can, with the help of inexpensive catalysts, achieve an optimum balance of volatiles, heating values and residual char thus reducing the technical demands upon the gasifier. Such simplifications should lower capital and operating costs of the gasifier to the mutual benefit of both solid fuel communities.

Some new compounds of cinnamic acid with lighter trivalent lanthanides were prepared in the solid state. The compounds have general formula ML3·H2O, where L is cinnamate (C6H5-CH=CH-COO-) and M is La, Ce, Pr, Nd or Sm. Thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, infrared absorption spectra and X-ray diffraction powder patterns were used to characterize and to study the thermal stability and thermal decomposition of these compounds.

Some new compounds of cinnamic acid with the latter trivalent lanthanides and yttrium(III) were synthesized in the solid state. The compounds have the general formula LnL3, where Ln represents trivalent Eu to Lu or Y ions and L is the cinnamate anion (C6H5-CH=CH-COO-). Thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared absorption spectra and X-ray diffraction powder patterns were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Solid-state compounds with a general formula of LnL3· nH2O, where Ln stands for lighter trivalent lanthanides (lanthanum to samarium), L is 2-methoxybenzylidenepyruvate and n=1.5, 2, 2, 1.5 and 2, respectively, have been synthesized. On heating these compounds are decompose in two or three steps. They lose their hydration water in the first step and the thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occurs with the formation of the respective oxide, CeO2, Pr6O11 and Ln 2O3 (Ln=La, Nd, Sm) as final residue. The dehydration enthalpies found for these compounds (La to Sm) were: 222.7, 163.6, 497.7, 513.9 and 715.4 kJ mol-1, respectively. © 2005 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.

Solid-state M-4-MeO-Bz compounds, where M stands for bivalent Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn and 4-MeO-Bz is 4-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results led to have information about the composition, dehydration, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the isolated compounds. © 2005 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.
