Una búsqueda de pulgones sobre especies de Pinus se realizó en diferentes provincias de la Argentina. La identificación del material colectado permite citar por primera vez para este país Essigella californica (Essig), hallado en cinco provincias. Se presentan aspectos biológicos y morfológicos que permiten separar los tres géneros de la tribu Eulachnini (subfamilia Lachninae) presentes ahora en la Argentina: Cinara, Eulachnus y Essigella

El índice de erosividad (EI30) y su espacialización fueron determinados para las cuencas de contribución del sistema hidroeléctrico de la reserva Cachoeira Dourada, localizada entre los Estados de Goias y Minas Gerais, limitada por las coordenadas 640000-760000 m W. y 7910000-7975000 m S. UTM zona 22, Datum Córrego Alegre. Se trataron los datos del promedio mensual y anual de las precipitaciones correspondientes a ocho localidades para un periodo de treinta años. Existe una distribución irregular de precipitación en la región y en consecuencia una espacialización no uniforme de los índices de erosión en el área de influencia de la reserva. Los valores más altos de precipitación coinciden con el periodo de preparación de la tierra para el cultivo y el desarrollo de las plantas de ciclo anual, principalmente soja y maíz.

The fall armyworm (FAW) is the most important threat to corn crops in Argentina, and there exists very little up-to-date information on its actual pest status because the available literature was published more than 20 years ago. Therefore, field surveys were carried out in the northeast of Argentina, in order to establish the attack rates and injury levels of the pest in relation to the crop phenology. The study was carried out at two localities: Colonia Benítez, an agricultural region, and Tapenagá, a cattle-raising area. At each site two 1-ha plots were sown either with a Bt-corn expressing Cry 1F protein or with an untransformed corn germplasm. Optimal and late sowing was assayed and FAW larval abundance, relative age composition, attack rates and level of damage to corn were recorded. At the moment of the field experiments, Bt-corn was not affected by FAW larvae. However, untransformed germplasms were severely affected by FAW larvae, with an average of attacked plants of 18% or more. In contrast to data obtained 30 years ago, higher values of FAW density were registered. Levels of damage to corn plants were higher after the V4 stage. It was found that the sowing date affected the infestation levels and early seeding avoided high armyworm densities that develop later in the season; in northern Argentina, this was only relevant in agricultural areas.

El tomate de cáscara (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.) es un cultivo alimenticio de gran importancia económica en México. Sin embargo, es afectado por diversas plagas y enfermedades tales como los Thrips (Thysanoptera: Frankliniella occidentalis) y el virus de la marchitez manchada del tomate (TSWV) que llegan a causar hasta un 80% de pérdidas. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue modelizar la distribución espacial de huevos de Thrips mediante técnicas geoestadísticas y obtener, en consecuencia, mapas de incidencia por medio del Kriging. Se georreferenciaron 121 puntos de muestreo en cada una de las parcelas comerciales de los municipios de Luvianos, Jocotitlán e Ixtlahuaca, a través del método de transectos en tres etapas fenológicas del cultivo. Se contabilizó el número de huevos de Thrips en cada punto de muestreo. Los resultados mostraron que las poblaciones de huevos deThrips presentan una distribución agregada, identificándose varios centros de conglomeración a través de los mapas obtenidos. Los semivariogramas obtenidos de la distribución espacial se ajustaron principalmente a los modelos gaussianos y esféricos. La distribución de huevos de Thrips se presentó en centros de agregación dentro de las parcelas estudiadas, lo cual permitirá establecer estrategias y medidas de control o mitigación en términos de sitios específicos de infestación de huevos de Thrips.

En el presente trabajo se estudia el poder tóxico de 14 sorgos cultivados en dos localidades de la Provincia de Mendoza, complementando con observaciones fenológicas y de desarrollo vegetativo. Se establece la mayor o menor precocidad de cada uno de los sorgos, especialmente durante el período de aprovechamiento como forraje. Se determina el grado de peligrosidad por su ingestión en verde, en dos estados de crecimiento, estableciéndose asimismo el porcentaje de disminución del ácido cianhídrico entre dichos dos estados.

A biostratigraphically complete (all nannofossil biozones present) Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary was recovered at Site 761 on the Wombat Plateau, northwest Australian margin, during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 122. A quantitative study of calcareous nannofossils on closely spaced samples across the boundary reveals a rapid change in assemblages in a similar fashion to other Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary sites. Nannofossil species were placed into three categories: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and 'survivors'. The rapid sequential turnover in these assemblages is as follows: Cretaceous species are abruptly replaced at the boundary by opportunistic survivor species, which in turn are abruptly replaced by newly evolved Tertiary taxa. The uppermost Maestrichtian assemblage is distinctly mid-latitudinal with few Micula murus and rare to few Nephrolithus frequens. The nannofossil assemblage immediately above the boundary is dominated by an abundance bloom of Cyclagelosphaera spp. No Thoracosphaera or Braarudosphaera abundance blooms are present as at many other localities. The change from a survivor- to Tertiary-dominated assemblage is coincident with the CPla/CPlb nannofossil subzonal boundary, which is marked by the simultaneous first occurrence of several species including Cruciplacolithus tenuis and C. primus. The latter is found to first occur below C. tenuis in the most complete Cretaceous/Tertiary sections. A hiatus between Subzones CPla and CPlb is interpreted to explain this discrepancy.

The isotopic compositions of dissolved CO2 and CH4 in sediments of the Nankai Trough indicate that CH4 is formed during early diagenesis by microbial reduction of CO2. At the shallowest sampled depths, the CO2 dissolved in the pore water is unusually enriched in 12C (d13C = -35.2 per mil), indicating contribution of CO2 from oxidation of CH4. The most intense microbiological activity appears to be confined to the uppermost 50 m of sediment, based on relative lack of change in the isotopic compositions below this depth. Gas hydrate probably is not present at these localities (Sites 582, 583) because of CH4 concentrations that are insufficient to saturate the pore water with respect to gas hydrate stability.

About 34 million years ago, Earth's climate shifted from a relatively ice-free world to one with glacial conditions on Antarctica characterized by substantial ice sheets. How Earth's temperature changed during this climate transition remains poorly understood, and evidence for Northern Hemisphere polar ice is controversial. Here, we report proxy records of sea surface temperatures from multiple ocean localities and show that the high-latitude temperature decrease was substantial and heterogeneous. High-latitude (45 degrees to 70 degrees in both hemispheres) temperatures before the climate transition were ~20°C and cooled an average of ~5°C. Our results, combined with ocean and ice-sheet model simulations and benthic oxygen isotope records, indicate that Northern Hemisphere glaciation was not required to accommodate the magnitude of continental ice growth during this time.

This paper concentrates on the Early Oligocene palaeoclimate of the southern part of Eastern and Central Europe and gives a detailed climatological analysis, combined with leaf-morphological studies and modelling of the palaeoatmospheric CO2 level using stomatal and d13 C data. Climate data are calculated using the Coexistence Approach for Kiscellian floras of the Palaeogene Basin (Hungary and Slovenia) and coeval assemblages from Central and Southeastern Europe. Potential microclimatic or habitat variations are considered using morphometric analysis of fossil leaves from Hungarian, Slovenian and Italian floras. Reconstruction of CO2 is performed by applying a recently introduced mechanistic model. Results of climate analysis indicate distinct latitudinal and longitudinal climate patterns for various variables which agree well with reconstructed palaeogeography and vegetation. Calculated climate variables in general suggest a warm and frost-free climate with low seasonal variation of temperature. A difference in temperature parameters is recorded between localities from Central and Southeastern Europe, manifested mainly in the mean temperature of the coldest month. Results of morphometric analysis suggest microclimatic or habitat difference among studied floras. Extending the scarce information available on atmospheric CO2 levels during the Oligocene, we provide data for a well-defined time-interval. Reconstructed atmospheric CO2 levels agree well with threshold values for Antarctic ice sheet growth suggested by recent modelling studies. The successful application of the mechanistic model for the reconstruction of atmospheric CO2 levels raises new possibitities for future climate inference from macro-flora studies.

Innerdalen was once a mountain valley (ca. 780 m a.s.l.) with birch forests, bogs and several summer farms. Today it is a 6.5 km**2 artifical lake. In 1980 and 1981 archaeological and palynological investigations were carried out due to the hydroelectric power plans. Radiocarbon dated pollen diagrams from 9 different localities in Innerdalen provide information on a mountain environment which has been exploited to varying degrees by human groups for thousands of years. In the Birch Zone, ca. 9500-8500 years B.P., the deglaciated surface is vegetated by the normal sequence of pioneering species, first show-bed communities, then shrub/dwarf-shrub communities, and finally a birch forest community. In the Pine Zone, ca. 8500-7500 years B.P., the mixed Birch-Pine forest which prevailed at the end of the Birch Zone is replaced by a dense pine forest. The tree limit was higher than it is today. In the Alder Zone, ca. 7500-4000 years B.P., the newly arrived alder gradually succeeded pine, particularily on good soils. This alder forest has a modem analog in the pre-alpine gray alder forests in Norway. In the last part of the Alder Zone, ca. 6000-4000 years B.P., elm and hazel are nominally present on particularily rich soils, marking the edaphic and climatic optimum in Innerdalen. During this time the first evidence of human impact on the vegetation is apparent in the pollen diagrams. At both Sætersetra in the south of the valley and Liabekken in the north, forest clearance and the development of grazed grass meadows is documented, and human impact continues until the present. The Herb Zone, ca. 4000 years B.P. to 1600 A.D., is characterized by the rapid decline of alder. The forest is increasingly open, and bog formation is initiated. The sub-alpine belt of birch forest is established, probably due to the shift to a cooler, moister climate. Human activity can also have influenced the vegetational changes, although at 4 of the localities human activity also is first apparent after the alder decline. Some localities show measurably less human impact on the vegetation ca. 2600-2000 years B.P. Grazing intensity increases ca. 2000 years B.P. At the end of the Herb Zone rye and barley pollen is registered at Sætersetra and Flonan, indicating contact between the grazing activities of Innerdal and grain cultivation activities outside the valley. The Spruce Zone, ca. 1600 A.D. to the present, does not begin synchronously since the presence of long-distance transported spruce pollen at a locality is entirely dependent on the density of the vegetation ie. degree of human impact. The youngest spruce rise is ca. 1500 A.D. at Røstvangen, when summerfarming is initiated. Summerfarming activities in Innerdal produce an increasingly open landscape. Rye and barley pollen at several localities may indicate limited local cultivation, but is more likely long-distance transport via humans and domesticated animals from cultivated areas outside Innerdalen.

Sediments from the Argo Abyssal Plain (AAP), northwest of Australia, are the oldest known from the Indian Ocean and were recovered from ODP Site 765 and DSDP Site 261. New biostratigraphic and sedimentologic data from these sites, as well as reinterpretations of earlier findings, indicate that basal sediments at both localities are of Late Jurassic age and delineate a history of starved sedimentation punctuated by periodic influx of calcareous pelagic turbidites. Biostratigraphy and correlation of Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sediments is based largely on calcareous nannofossils. Both sites yielded variably preserved nannofossil successions ranging from Tithonian to Hauterivian at Site 765 and Kimmeridgian to Hauterivian at Site 261. The nannofloras are comparable to those present in the European and Atlantic Boreal and Tethyan areas, but display important differences that reflect biogeographic differentiation. The Argo region is thought to have occupied a position at the southern limit of the Tethyan nannofloral realm, thus yielding both Tethyan and Austral biogeographic features. Sedimentary successions at the two sites are grossly similar, and differences largely reflect Site 765's greater proximity to the continental margin. Jurassic sediments were deposited at rates of about 2 m/m.y. near the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) and contain winnowed concentrations of inoceramid prisms and nannofossils, redeposited layers rich in calcispheres and calcisphere debris, manganese nodules, and volcanic detritus. Lower Cretaceous and all younger sediments accumulated below the CCD at rates that were highest (about 20 m/m.y.) during mid-Cretaceous and Neogene time. Background sediment in this interval is noncalcareous claystone; turbidites dominate the sequence and are thicker and coarser grained at Site 765. AAP turbidites consist mostly of calcareous and siliceous biogenic components and volcanogenic smectite clay; they were derived from relatively deep parts of the continental margin that lay below the photic zone, but above the CCD. The Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous section is about the same thickness across the AAP; turbidites in this interval appear to have had multiple sources along the Australian margin. The Upper Cretaceous-Cenozoic section, however, is three times thicker at Site 765 than at Site 261; turbidites in this interval were derived predominantly from the south. Patterns of sedimentation across the AAP have been influenced by shifts in sea level, the CCD, and configuration of the continental margin. Major pulses of calcareous turbidite deposition occurred during Valanginian, Aptian, and Neogene time-all periods of eustatic lowstands and depressed CCD levels. Sediment redeposited on the AAP has come largely from the Australian outer shelf, continental slope, or rise, rather than the continent itself. Most terrigenous detritus was trapped in epicontinental basins that have flanked northwestern Australia since the early Mesozoic.

El fenómeno de agriculturización que ha tenido lugar en nuestro país durante los últimos años no ha impactado solamente en la región de la República Argentina tradicionalmente agrícola. También lo ha hecho, aunque de una manera diferente, en la Provincia de San Luis. En esta provincia, dicho fenómeno convive con otras particularidades, como es la radicación industrial promocionada, que marcó profundamente el aparato productivo provincial o, más recientemente, una política pública de amplio espectro como el Plan de Inclusión Social, que modificó drásticamente los indicadores del mercado laboral sanluiseño. Este trabajo tiene por objeto estudiar la situación laboral de dos localidades de la Provincia de San Luis emplazadas en zonas de importante producción agrícola, considerando la influencia de las políticas públicas locales y del sector industrial que aún mantiene una importante cuota del Producto Bruto Geográfico. Para esto se realiza un análisis comparativo entre ellas y con la situación provincial, caracterizada por el Aglomerado San Luis y El Chorrillo, que releva la Encuesta Permanente de Hogares del indec. La información utilizada proviene de datos secundarios procedentes de organismos nacionales y de relevamientos propios realizados en las localidades estudiadas

Depth habitats of 56 late Cretaceous planktonic foraminiferal species from cool and warm climate modes were determined based on stable isotope analyses of deep-sea samples from the equatorial Pacific DSDP Sites 577A and 463, and South Atlantic DSDP Site 525A. The following conclusions can be reached: Planoglobulina multicamerata (De Klasz) and Heterohelix rajagopalani (Govindan) occupied the deepest plankton habitats, followed by Abathomphalus mayaroensis (Bolli), Globotruncanella havanensis (Voorwijk), Gublerina cuvillieri Kikoine, and Laeviheterohelix glabrans (Cushman) also at subthermocline depth. Most keeled globotruncanids, and possibly Globigerinelliodes and Racemiguembelina species, lived at or within the thermocline layer. Heterohelix globulosa (Ehrenberg) and Rugoglobigerina, Pseudotextularia and Planoglobulina occupied the subsurface depth of the mixed layer, and Pseudoguembelina species inhabited the surface mixed layer. However, depth ranking of some species varied depending on warm or cool climate modes, and late Campanian or Maastrichtian age. For example, most keeled globotruncanids occupied similar shallow subsurface habitats as Rugoglobigerina during the warm late Campanian, but occupied the deeper thermocline layer during cool climatic intervals. Two distinct types of "vital effect" mechanisms reflecting photosymbiosis and respiration effects can be recognized by the exceptional delta13C signals of some species. (1) Photosymbiosis is implied by the repetitive pattern of relatively enriched delta13C values of Racemiguembelina (strongest), Planoglobulina, Rosita and Rugoglobigerina species, Pseudoguembelina excolata (weakest). (2) Enriched respiration 12C products are recognized in A. mayaroensis, Gublerina acuta De Klasz, and Heterohelix planata (Cushman). Isotopic trends between samples suggest that photosymbiotic activities varied between localities or during different climate modes, and may have ceased under certain environmental conditions. The appearance of most photosymbiotic species in the late Maastrichtian suggests oligotrophic conditions associated with increased water-mass stratification.

A high-resolution record of foraminiferal fragmentation (a dissolution indicator) for the last 250 k.y. (isotopic Stages 1 to 7) is identified in the upper 61.9 m of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 828A, west Vanuatu. This record is comparable in detail to the atmospheric CO2 record and the d18O stack. Phase shifts between preservation spikes and maximum ice volumes (d18O of Globigerinoides sacculifer) are analogous to those on Ontong Java Plateau. Mass spectrometer (AMS14C) dating of a sample taken at the base of dissolution cycle B1 and the position of the last glacial maximum indicates a lag in time of ~8 k.y. in the Vanuatu region for the last glacial termination. When dissolution spikes are compared with minimum ice volumes there is no phase shift for the last two glacial terminations. The difference between Vanuatu and Ontong Java Plateau may be explained by local CO2 sinks and the interplay between intermediate and deep water masses. Terrigenous input increasingly affected sediment of Hole 828A on the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge (NDR) as it approached Espiritu Santo Island. Mud and silt suspended in mid-water flows become important after 125 ka, while turbidites bypass the New Hebrides Trench only towards the last glacial maximum (LGM). Terrigenous supply seems to affect the lysocline profile that changed from an "open ocean" to a "near continent" type, thus favoring dissolution. Fragmentation of planktonic foraminifers is a more sensitive indicator of lysocline variations than is foraminiferal susceptibility to dissolution, the foraminiferal dissolution index, the abundance of benthic foraminifers, or CaCO3 content. A modern foraminiferal lysocline for the neighboring area (between 10°S and 30°S, and 160°E and 180°E) is found at 3.1 km below sea level, compared to west Vanuatu where it is shallower. The past lysocline level was deeper than 3086 m during intervals of dissolution minima, and ranged from ~2550 to 3000 m during intervals of dissolution maxima. The high sedimentation rates (in the order of 10 to 50 cm/k.y.) found in Hole 828A offer a great potential for future high-resolution studies either in this hole or other western localities along the NDR. Areas of high sedimentation near continental regions have been discarded for paleoceanographic and/or paleoclimatic studies. Nonetheless, conditions analogous to those found in Hole 828A are expected to occur in many trench areas around the world where mid-water flows have preserved as yet undiscovered fine high-resolution sedimentary records.
