OBJECTIVE: Client change talk has been proposed as a mechanism of change in motivational interviewing (MI) by mediating the link between therapist MI-consistent behaviors (MICO) and client behavioral outcomes. We tested under what circumstances this mechanism was supported in the context of a clinical trial of brief MI for heavy drinking among nontreatment seeking young men. METHOD: We conducted psycholinguistic coding of 174 sessions using the MI Skill Code 2.1 and derived the frequency of MICO and the strength of change talk (CTS) averaged over the session. CTS was examined as a mediator of the relationship between MICO and a drinking composite score measured at 3-month follow-up, controlling for the composite measure at baseline. Finally, we tested therapist gender and MI experience as well as client readiness to change and alcohol problem severity as moderators of this mediation model. RESULTS: CTS significantly predicted outcome (higher strength related to less drinking), but MICO did not predict CTS. However, CTS mediated the relationship between MICO and drinking outcomes when therapists had more experience in MI and when clients had more severe alcohol problems (i.e., significant conditional indirect effects). CONCLUSIONS: The mechanism hypothesized by MI theory was operative in our brief MI with heavy drinking young men, but only under particular conditions. Our results suggest that attention should be paid to therapist selection, training, and/or supervision until they reach a certain level of competence, and that MI might not be appropriate for nontreatment seeking clients drinking at a lower level of risk. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and four dimensional assimilation variational method (4D-VAR) are both advanced data assimilation methods. The EKF is impractical in large scale problems and 4D-VAR needs much effort in building the adjoint model. In this work we have formulated a data assimilation method that will tackle the above difficulties. The method will be later called the Variational Ensemble Kalman Filter (VEnKF). The method has been tested with the Lorenz95 model. Data has been simulated from the solution of the Lorenz95 equation with normally distributed noise. Two experiments have been conducted, first with full observations and the other one with partial observations. In each experiment we assimilate data with three-hour and six-hour time windows. Different ensemble sizes have been tested to examine the method. There is no strong difference between the results shown by the two time windows in either experiment. Experiment I gave similar results for all ensemble sizes tested while in experiment II, higher ensembles produce better results. In experiment I, a small ensemble size was enough to produce nice results while in experiment II the size had to be larger. Computational speed is not as good as we would want. The use of the Limited memory BFGS method instead of the current BFGS method might improve this. The method has proven succesful. Even if, it is unable to match the quality of analyses of EKF, it attains significant skill in forecasts ensuing from the analysis it has produced. It has two advantages over EKF; VEnKF does not require an adjoint model and it can be easily parallelized.

With this paper we build a two-region model where both innovation and imitation are performed. In particular imitation takes the form of technological spillovers that lagging regions may exploit given certain human capital conditions. We show how the high skill content of each region’s workforce (rather than the average human capital stock) is crucial to determine convergence towards the income level of the leader region and to exploit the technological spillovers coming from the frontier. The same applies to bureaucratic/institutional quality which are conductive to higher growth in the long run. We test successfully our theoretical result over Spanish regions for the period between 1960 and 1997. We exploit system GMM estimators which allow us to correctly deal with endogeneity problems and small sample bias.

Henkilökunnan korkea ammattitaito on avainasemassa voimalaitosalalla. Kuten monella muullakin teollisuusalalla, henkilöstön osaamisessa on tärkeä sija niin sanotulla hiljaisella tiedolla, jota kartutetaan työssä oppimalla. Tämän diplomityön ensimmäinen päämäärä oli kehittää menetelmä hiljaisen tiedon keräämiseksi voimalaitoksilla. Toinen päämäärä oli jatkaa Pohjolan Voiman vuosituhannen alussa aloittamaa projektia voimalaitosalan koulutusaineiston tuottamisen ja kehittämisen parissa. Diplomityössä kartoitettiin tilannetta voimalaitoksilla haastatteluin, lisäksi paikan päällä ollessa laadittiin listaa materiaalitarpeista, joita voimalaitoksilla on koulutusaineiston suhteen. Päällimmäisenä tavoitteena oli luoda tulevaisuutta varten mahdollisimman selvät suuntaviivat koulutusaineiston jatkokehitystä sekä hiljaisen tiedon keruuta silmälläpitäen.

Tutkielman tavoitteena oli analysoida pokeritulojen verotusta Suomessa. Analyysi jakautui nykylainsäädännön mukaisen tilanteen käsittelyyn ja toisaalta nykytilanteelle vaihtoehtoisen mallin luomiseen. Tarkastelu keskittyi pääasiassa ammattilaispelaajan tilanteeseen, mutta myös harrastelijoiden näkökulma otettiin huomioon. Tutkimusmenetelmä oli kvalitatiivinen ja tutkielmaa varten haastateltiin sekä ammattilaispelaajia että Verohallinnon edustajaa. Tutkielman mukaan nykytilanne, jossa pokerivoitot katsotaan arpajaisvoitoiksi, sopii hyvin harrastelijoiden tilanteeseen. Ammattilaisille tutkielma kuitenkin päätyy esittämään vaihtoehtoista mallia, jossa pokerivoitot katsottaisiin ainoastaan pelaajan pääomatuloksi, sillä ammattilaisen kohdalla peli ei enää ole arvontaan perustuvaa. Pokeri on heille taitopeli, jossa sattumalla on osuutensa lyhyellä ajanjaksolla ja josta saadut voitot ovat pääomatulon luonteisia.

In this thesis, "Human behavior on the Internet", the human anxiety is conceptualized. The following questions have guided the writing of the thesis: How humans behave with the Internet technology? What goes in their mind? What kinds of behaviors are shown while using the Internet? What is the role of the content on the Internet and especially what are the types of anxiety behavior on the Internet? By conceptualization this thesis aims to provide a model for studying whether humans show signs of less or exacerbated anxiety while using the Internet. The empirical part of this thesis was built on new developed model and user study that utilizes that model. For the user study, the target users were divided into two groups based on their skill level. The user study used both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The qualitative research was conducted using interviews and observational analysis. The quantitative research was conducted in three iterations by using questionnaires and surveys. These results suggest that the significance of human on using technology would be integral part of such a study. The study also suggests that Internet has lulled humans with the sense of dependency to greater extent. In particular, the results identified seven main areas of human anxiety. These forms of anxiety require further studies to encompass human anxiety in more detail.

Fundada a Barcelona el 1892 per un italià que havia après l’ofici a Llatinoamèrica, l’editorial Maucci esdevé ben aviat capdavantera en la difusió del llibre a gran escala i a preus molt econòmics. Un catàleg de 1908 ens permet deduir que publica sobretot literatura, tant d’autors cultes com d’autors de consum, i que difon una gran quantitat de traduccions, sovint primícies en espanyol (llengua que utilitza en exclusiva). Hi predomina de bon tros la literatura francesa, ja sigui d’escriptors de prestigi ja sigui de novel·listes de fulletó. La majoria dels pocs traductors mencionats són poc o no gens coneguts. Testimonis coetanis de l’expansió de l’editorial l’acusen de mutilar els originals i de pagar misèrrimament les traduccions, que solien ser molt deficients.

The first objective of this study is to furnish new evidence concerning the aggregate profitability of the accumulation of human capital. In addition to the traditional measure of the return to human capital, combining the information on its shadow price with the social cost of providing education allows us to confirm the profitability of human capital investments as a tool for promoting economic growth. The possibility of obtaining estimations of these effects for each Spanish region enables us to empirically evaluate the amount of heterogeneity across economies in the effects of human capital. As a second objective, we provide evidence on the indirect effect of human capital in making private capital investment more attractive. Among the main explanations for this process, we observe that higher worker skill levels enable higher returns to be extracted from investment in physical capital.

The direct effect of human capital on economic growth has been widely analysed in the economic literature. This paper, however, focuses on its indirect effect as a stimulus for private investment in physical capital. The methodological framework used is the duality theory, estimating a cost system aggregated with human capital. Empirical evidence is given for Spain for the period 1980-2000. We provide evidence on the indirect effect of human capital in making private capital investment more attractive. Among the main explanations for this process, we observe that higher worker skill levels enable higher returns to be extracted from investment in physical capital.

This research focuses on life trajectories and desistance from crime processes in a case-study qualitative sample of six offenders from 18 to 21 years old sentenced to penal custody in Barcelona, Spain.The theoretical framework comprises systemism (Mario Bunge, 2000, 2006), the life-course perspective (Elder, 1994, 2007), transition to adulthood (Casal et al., 2006) and desistance from crime as a process (Maruna, 2001; Sampson and Laub, 2003; Bottoms and Shapland, 2010; Cid and Martí, 2011).Information was collected through in-depth personal interviews and analysed through content analysis. Results show the importance of attachment to family and school institutions, as well as an effective professional training skill programme at the correctional facility to achieve a law-abiding lifestyle at adulthood.

Given the structural and acoustical similarities between speech and music, and possible overlapping cerebral structures in speech and music processing, a possible relationship between musical aptitude and linguistic abilities, especially in terms of second language pronunciation skills, was investigated. Moreover, the laterality effect of the mother tongue was examined with both adults and children by means of dichotic listening scores. Finally, two event-related potential studies sought to reveal whether children with advanced second language pronunciation skills and higher general musical aptitude differed from children with less-advanced pronunciation skills and less musical aptitude in accuracy when preattentively processing mistuned triads and music / speech sound durations. The results showed a significant relationship between musical aptitude, English language pronunciation skills, chord discrimination ability, and sound-change-evoked brain activation in response to musical stimuli (durational differences and triad contrasts). Regular music practice may also have a modulatory effect on the brain’s linguistic organization and cause altered hemispheric functioning in those who have regularly practised music for years. Based on the present results, it is proposed that language skills, both in production and discrimination, are interconnected with perceptual musical skills.

The Ageing in Working Life. Do Adolescence and Schooling Beat Adulthood and Experience? This study examines the changes in the work and the work organisations of employees in the fields of health care and retail trade who have turned 45 and their experience of change. In addition, the question of how ageing employees experience their status in post-modern working life is explored. Attention is also focused on the choices and decisions connected with staying at work and retiring. These views are examined in relation to professions and professional cultures. Thematic interviews (N=98) were used to gather the material. The effects of the market liberalistic turn in welfare policy are clearly seen in the everyday work of the health care professions. These changes were examined from the point of view of managing by outcomes and quality assurance, multi-professional cooperation, flexibility in the division of labour, and the spread of market-like procedures. The discourse of those in involved retail trade was dominated by extremely tight global market competition and control of outcomes, and by the structural changes taking place in the retail trade sector. This change discourse was to a large extent a reaction to those changes in the functional environment which were experienced as negative and to the conflict between their own professional identity and professional ethics on the one hand, and their functional environment on the other. There were also obstacles connected with professional culture: defending one's own station and power, guarding the 'frontier', showed up in attitudes towards new management and organisation models or towards structural and functional reforms. The deep structures of professional culture and the mindset of the actors change much more slowly than the functional practices of organisations. For those in a supervisory position, the loss of power due to becoming part of a chain or because of the introduction of a team organisation model was not an easy thing to accept. The nurses and others in related fields felt that they were forced to do work that was below their level of training and professional skill. For sales personnel and those who did assisting work in health care, power and the possibility of having an influence were not so important, as long as they were able to do their work in their own way and were trusted. This view is often completely forgotten, for example, in various organisation models in which power and the possibility of having an influence entwined with power are taken for granted as being clearly positive and desired aspects of job satisfaction. Up to date professional skills were experienced as being important from the point of view of professional identity and self-worth. Thus, training can be understood as a moral obligation, which in turn is intertwined with professional ideology. In the rhetoric of adult education, an adult is expected to be an active player who will seek training again and again if working life so requires. The dark side of this ideology, which leads to feelings of guilt, was apparent in the thoughts of the respondents. Am I never good enough at my job; why must I continually strive for better, additional qualifications? The majority of the respondents evaluated their expertise as being at quite a high level. This self-confidence did not extend to applying for a job. Job recruitment was seen as a situation in which age discrimination reached its peak. The interviewees were unanimous about the idea that society favours the young. Especially among those in the retail trade sector, there was a feeling that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find a new job of the same level or a permanent post if they were made redundant. Age discrimination was also apparent in the retail trade field in the form of older employees being retired against their will or transferred to other tasks. It was felt that ruthless forced retirement of older workers was part of the personnel policy of some organisations. The importance of one's outward appearance was connected with the theme of discrimination. This phenomenon is described using the concept of the double standard of ageing in feminist research. An ageing woman is relegated to an inferior position due to both her age and her sex. A culture that would both make possible and allow various types of choices regardless of age, which is described as being characteristic of the post-modern era, does not seem to be very topical in the practice of working life. It is important for employees that the management and the personnel policy that is being implemented makes them feel like both their contribution and they as individuals are appreciated, that their opinions are listened to and that they are noticed as persons. The interviewees hoped for gratitude and a concern for the well-being of employees that shows in everyday life. They valued training and activities aimed at maintaining their work ability, but thought that better coping at work and a pleasant working environment cannot be achieved through such measures as along as the foundation is 'in a mess'. Development of the quality of working life is the only thing that can improve job satisfaction and get people to remain in the work force longer than at present. There should be a sufficient number of properly trained employees at the work place. It was important to the respondents that they be able to stay on their job to the end with honour, since compromising with their own quality standards or acting contrary to their ideal self-image in terms of professional ethics would strike a blow to their professional self-esteem. They called for the development of various types of workplace flexibility, and felt that they have the right to a lightened workload and to early retirement. Early retirement was even seen as an altruistic deed: it would free up a place for younger workers. Thoughts of retirements were explained by familiar factors such as health and finances, life situation, the enticement of free-time, as well as by various factors related to work. It is very important to ageing employees that their work has meaningful content. The values related to self-fulfilment are felt to be of great importance, and if they cannot be realised at work, the respondents wanted more free time, either through retirement or in the form of flexibility in working life.

“L’altre Segon Quintet. Anàlisi formal i rítmic de l’evolució de la interpretació del repertori en els concerts en directe del Segon Quintet de Miles Davis” és un estudi històric i analític de la música de Miles Davis i el seu famós “Segon Quintet”. A diferència de la majoria de publicacions sobre aquesta banda, es centra únicament en els concerts en directe i el repertori que hi tocaven. Per treure a la llum la “màgia” que hi havia, he fet unes transcripcions amb un mètode propi de diverses versions de les mateixes peces al llarg dels anys i he anotat tots els fets rellevants en aspectes d’arranjaments, plantejaments estètics i interacció entre solistes i secció rítmica. Finalment he comprovat que aquesta “màgia” és fruit d’unes fórmules pautades i no és tan espontània com sembla en una primera escolta. Per altra banda, tots els músics de la banda contribueixen al so del grup, demostrant així la seva condició d’indispensables per la banda.

With this article we want to present a state of affairs of the didactics of art in our context, and at the same time we want todiscuss on its pluri- and interdisciplinary construction. We check the different disciplines that configure it and we analysethe paradigm of artistic education as a discipline (DBAE) and its passage to post-modernity. This example focuses thediscussion about the opportunity of adapting holistic educative models and the transition of the current educativeinnovation towards skill models

Mental models play an important role in the evolution of an individual's so-called knowledge. Using such representations, students can explain, foresee, and attribute causality to observed phenomena. In the case of Chemistry, the ability to work mentally with models assumes great importance, due to the microscopic component that is characteristic of this science. With the objective of exploring students' ability to work with models, 27 students of the Chemistry Institute of UNESP were asked to describe the mechanisms of dissolution, in water, of NaCl, HCl and HCN, as well as the partial dissolution of I2. Due to difficulties of access to complex descriptors of these processes, each student was asked to explain the phenomena using words and drawings. The results of these investigations were analyzed, and enabled construction of a framework representing the Chemistry students' theoretical training, especially with respect to their most important transferred skill: an ability to model the physical world.
