Mineralogical and oxygen isotopic analyses of samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 477, 481, and 477 in the Guaymas Basin indicate the existence of two distinct hydrothermal systems. In the first, at Sites 481 and 478, hot dolerite sills intruded into highly porous hemipelagic siliceous mudstones that were moderately rich in organic matter, thermally altered the adjacent sediments, and expelled hydrothermal pore fluids. The second, at Site 477 and active at present, is most probably caused by a recent igneous intrusion forming a magma chamber at shallow depth. In the first hydrothermal system, the main thermal reactions above and below the sills are dissolution of opal-A and formation of quartz, either directly or through opal-CT; formation of smectite; formation of analcime only above the sills; dissolution and recrystallization of calcite and occasional formation of dolomite or protodolomite. The d18O values of the hydrothermally altered sediments range from 9.9 to 12.2 per mil (SMOW). The d18O values of recrystallized calcites above the first sill complex, Site 481, indicate temperatures of 140° to 170°C. No fluid recharge is required in this system. The thickness of the sill complexes and the sequence and depth of intrusion into the sediment column determine the thickness of the alteration zones, which ranges from 2 or 3 to approximately 50 meters. Generally, the hydrothermally altered zone is thicker above than below the sill. In the second type, the sediments are extensively recrystallized. The characteristic greenschist-facies mineral assemblage of quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote predominates. Considerable amounts of pyrite, pyrrhotite, and sphene are also present. The lowest d18O value of the greenschist facies rocks is 6.6 per mil, and the highest d18O value of the associated pore fluids is +1.38 per mil (SMOW). The paragenesis and the oxygen isotopes of individual phases indicate alteration temperatures of 300 ± 50°C. On the basis of the oxygen isotopes of the solids and associated fluids, it is concluded that recharge of fluids is required. The water/rock ratio in wt.% is moderate, approximately 2/1 to 3/1 - higher than the calculated water/rock ratio of the hydrothermal system at the East Pacific Rise, 21 °N.

Major and trace element analyses are presented for 110 samples from the DSDP Leg 60 basement cores drilled along a transect across the Mariana Trough, arc, fore-arc, and Trench at about 18°N. The igneous rocks forming breccias at Site 453 in the west Mariana Trough include plutonic cumulates and basalts with calc-alkaline affinities. Basalts recovered from Sites 454 and 456 in the Mariana Trough include types with compositions similar to normal MORB and types with calc-alkaline affinities within a single hole. At Site 454 the basalts show a complete compositional transition between normal MORB and calc-alkaline basalts. These basalts may be the result of mixing of the two magma types in small sub-crustal magma reservoirs or assimilation of calc-alkaline, arc-derived vitric tuffs by normal MORB magmas during eruption or intrusion. A basaltic andesite clast in the breccia recovered from Site 457 on the active Mariana arc and samples dredged from a seamount in the Mariana arc are calc-alkaline and similar in composition to the basalts recovered from the Mariana Trough and West Mariana Ridge. Primitive island arc tholeiites were recovered from all four sites (Sites 458-461) drilled on the fore-arc and arc-side wall of the trench. These basalts form a coherent compositional group distinct from the Mariana arc, West Mariana arc, and Mariana Trough calc-alkaline lavas, indicating temporal (and perhaps spatial?) chemical variations in the arc magmas erupted along the transect. Much of the 209 meters of basement cored at Site 458 consists of endiopside- and bronzite-bearing, Mg-rich andesites with compositions related to boninites. These andesites have the very low Ti, Zr, Ti/Zr, P, and rare-earthelement contents characteristic of boninites, although they are slightly light-rare-earth-depleted and have lower MgO, Cr, Ni, and higher CaO and Al2O3 contents than those reported for typical boninites. The large variations in chemistry observed in the lavas recovered from this transect suggest that diverse mantle source compositions and complex petrogenetic process are involved in forming crustal rocks at this intra-oceanic active plate margin.

We present new U-Pb zircon (SHRIMP) data on rocks from Mt Newton and Cumpston Massif in the southern Prince Charles Mountains. Our data demonstrate that Mt Newton was affected by a newly proposed Palaeoproterozoic "Newton" Orogeny at c. 2100-2200 Ma. Sedimentation, felsic volcanism (c. 2200 Ma), metamorphism and folding, followed by granite intrusion (c. 2100 Ma), suggest development of a trough or aulacogene in the area during the early Palaeoproterozoic. An orthogneiss from Cumpston Massif yielded an age of c. 3180 Ma for granitic protolith emplacement, which is in good agreement with many U-Pb zircon ages from similar rocks in the southern Mawson Escarpment. A syn- to late-tectonic muscovite-bearing pegmatite from Cumpston Massif yielded a c. 2500 Ma date of emplacement, which indicates early Palaeoproterozoic activity in this block, probably in response to a tectono-magmatic episode in the Lambert Terrane bordering the Ruker Terrane in the northeast. The correlation of tectono-magmatic events in both the Ruker and Lambert terranes of the southern Prince Charles Mountains provides evidence for their common evolution during the Proterozoic.

The R/V METEOR cruise M60/3 took place from January 13 through February 14, 2004. Target area was the Logatchev hydrothermal field situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) with main spots around 14°45'N and 44°59'W and 14°55'N and 44°55'W. The active Logatchev hydrothermal field lies on a small plateau on the eastern flank of the inner rift valley in 2900 m to 3060 m water depth. It is characterized by sites of active, high-T fluid emanation and sulfide precipitation as well as by inactive sites. CTD data for 17 stations located in the vicinity of the Logatchev hydrothermal field were recorded using a SEABIRD CTD Type 911, mostly for the entire water column. CTD sensors had been calibrated by SEABIRD directly before the cruise; additional calibrations of the data obtained, e.g. by salinometer measurements of selected samples were not accomplished. For most stations, no indication of hydrothermal plumes could be identified within the CTD-profiles. An exception is station M60/3-37-CTD-R for which the S/T plot evidences the intrusion of a component relatively depleted in salinity for the depth area from 2600m to 2700m water depth.

This paper presents sulfide mineral occurrence, abundance, and composition in samples from hydrothermally altered peridotite and gabbro recovered during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 209 from south of the 15°20'N Fracture Zone on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at Site 1268. Most of the sulfide minerals occur in veins and halos around veins in serpentinized peridotite. The only sulfide phases reported that occur in proximity to gabbro are those associated with a mafic intrusion into serpentinized peridotite. Sulfide mineral species change predictably downsection but are perturbed coincident with a breccia interpreted to be generated by intrusion of a gabbroic magma. The general downhole trend suggests sulfide mineral precipitation in conditions with decreasing sulfur and oxygen fugacity. Sulfide minerals that indicate precipitation at relatively higher sulfur and oxygen fugacity occur in the central core of the intrusion breccia. Sphalerite makes a fleeting appearance in the sulfide mineral assemblage in samples from the lower part of the intrusion breccia. Strongly contrasting pyrite compositions suggest at least two episodes of pyrite precipitation, but there is no clear morphological distinction between phases. Heazelwoodite, tentatively identified in shipboard examinations, could not be confirmed in this study.

At Site 493, DSDP Leg 66, dioritic basement was reached below lower Miocene (NN1 Zone, 22-24 Ma) terrigenous sediments. Petrographical, mineralogical (including microprobe analyses), and chemical features of the dioritic rocks reveal their magmatic affinity with the calc-alkaline series. Furthermore, their radiometric age (35.3 m.y.) links the basement to the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico and to mid-Tertiary volcanic arcs in Central America. The presence of Oligocene diorite 50 km from the trench axis confirms the truncation of the south Mexico margin, which we explain as the result of a 650 to 800 km left-lateral displacement of Central America relative to North America. Truncation must have occurred in the late Miocene, after the diorite intrusion and prior to the present subduction.

The Proterozoic country rock at Ahlmannryggen consists of flat lying basaltic lo andesitic lava flows and sedimentary rocks intruded by dioritic sills (Borgmassivet Intrusives). The suites display a typical platform cover. K-Ar age determinations gave maximum ages of about 1200 Ma on the magmatic rocks. All these suites were intruded bv Proterozoic dikes dated also at about 1200 Ma. Localiy the Proterozoic rocks have a slaty cleavage grading into mylonitic texture which strike parallel to the Jutul Penck graben. Such tectonic structures were dated at 525 Ma using syntectonic white micas. Evidence of the break-up of Gondwana during the Early Jurassic/Triassic is given by dikes at Ahlmannryggen and lava flows, dikes and sills at Vestfjella. At Ahlmannryggen the initial rift phase is documented by the development of the Jutul Penck graben and the intrusion of the 200-250 Ma continental-tholeiitic dikes striking parallel to the graben axis. The lava flows, dikes and sills at Vestfjella represent a later stage of the Gondwana break-up at about 180 Ma that probably reflects the initial stage of the opening of the Weddell Sea.

Dinoflagellate cysts were studied in 42 samples from surface sediments of the White Sea. Total concentration of dinocysts varies from single cysts to 25000 cyst/g of dry sediments, which reflects biological productivity in White Sea waters and regional particular features of sedimentation processes. The highest concentrations are observed in silts; they are related to the regions of propagation of highly productive Barents Sea waters in the White Sea. Generally, spatial distribution of dinocyst species in the surface sediments corresponds to distribution of the major types of water masses in the White Sea. Cysts of relatively warm-water species (Operculodinium centrocarpum, Spiniferites sp.) of North Atlantic origin that dominate in the sediments indicate an intensive intrusion of Barents Sea water masses to the White Sea along with hydrological dwelling conditions in the White Sea favorable for development of these species during their vegetation period. The cold-water dinocyst assemblage (Islandinium minutum, Polykrikos sp.) is rather strictly confined to inner parts of shallow-water bays, firstly, those adjacent to the Onega and Severnaya Dvina river mouths.

Abundant iron-titanium (Fe-Ti) oxide gabbro, olivine gabbro, and troctolite were drilled at Hole 735B adjacent to the Atlantis II Fracture Zone of the Southwest Indian Ridge during Leg 118. The Fe-Ti oxide gabbro occurs as intrusive bodies into olivine gabbro with very sharp intrusive contacts. The size of the intrusive bodies varies from a millimeter to a few tens of meters. Mineralogical parameters, such as anorthite content of plagioclase and Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratios of mafic minerals exhibit bimodal distributions corresponding to olivine and Fe-Ti oxide gabbros, respectively. When the two major gabbro types are looked at separately, several downhole mineralogical cycles are recognized. The Fe-Ti oxide gabbros exhibit two such cycles with plagioclase becoming more sodic and mafic minerals becoming more iron-rich downward in the drill core. The olivine gabbros and troctolites, however, exhibit two cycles showing an upward increase in sodium in plagioclase and iron in mafic minerals. The mineralogical variations of these gabbros and the intrusive contact relationships probably resulted from downward intrusion of evolved magma into underlying solid or almost solidified olivine gabbros and troctolite. The dense evolved melt at the top of the cumulus pile probably formed from the crystallization of olivine gabbro cumulates followed by extreme fractional crystallization of residual melt in an isolated, ephemeral magma chamber. The interlayered occurrence of evolved and primitive gabbros from Hole 735B represents a typical section of lower ocean crust formed at a very slow spreading ridge.

We conducted an integrated paleomagnetic and rock magnetic study on cores recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1276 and 1277 of the Newfoundland Basin. Stable components of magnetization are determined from Cretaceous-aged sedimentary and basement cores after detailed thermal and alternating-field demagnetization. Results from a series of rock magnetic measurements corroborate the demagnetization behavior and show that titanomagnetites are the main magnetic carrier. In view of the normal polarity of magnetization and radiometric dates for the sills at Site 1276 (~98 and ~105 Ma, both within the Cretaceous Normal Superchron) and for a gabbro intrusion in peridotite at Site 1277 (~126 Ma, Chron M1), our results suggest that the primary magnetization of the Cretaceous rocks is likely retained in these rocks. The overall magnetic inclination of lithologic Unit 2 in Hole 1277A between 143 and 180 meters below seafloor is 38°, implying significant (~35° counterclockwise, viewed to the north) rotation of the basement around a horizontal axis parallel to the rift axis (010°). The paleomagnetic rotational estimates should help refine models for the tectonic evolution of the basement. The mean inclinations for Sites 1276 and 1277 rocks imply paleolatitudes of 30.3° ± 5.1° and 22.9° ± 12.0°, respectively, with the latter presumably influenced by tectonic rotation. These values are consistent with those inferred from the mid-Cretaceous reference poles for North America, suggesting that the inclination determinations are reliable and consistent with a drill site on a location in the North America plate since at least the mid-Cretaceous. The combined paleolatitude results from Leg 210 sites indicate that the Newfoundland Basin was some 1800 km south of its current position in the mid-Cretaceous. Assuming a constant rate of motion, the paleolatitude data would suggest a rate of 12.1 mm/yr for the interval from ~130 Ma (Site 1276 age) to present, and 19.6 mm/yr for the interval from 126 Ma (Site 1277 age) to recent. The paleolatitude and rotational data from this study are consistent with the possibility that Site 1276 may have passed over the Canary and Madeira hotspots that formed the Newfoundland Seamounts in the mid-Cretaceous.

The response of phytoplankton assemblages to hydrographical forcing across the southern Brazilian shelf was studied based on data collected during wintertime (June/2012), complemented with MODIS-Aqua satellite imagery. The in situ data set was comprised by water column structure properties (derived from CTD casts), dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) and phytoplankton biomass [chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration] and composition. Phytoplankton assemblages were assessed by both microscopy and HPLC-CHEMTAX approaches. A canonical correspondence analysis associating physical, chemical and phytoplankton composition data at surface evinced a tight coupling between the phytoplankton community and hydrographic conditions, with remarkable environmental gradients across three different domains: the pelagic, outer shelf Tropical Water (TW); the mid shelf domain under influence of Subtropical Shelf Water (STSW); and the inner shelf domain mainly under influence of riverine outflow of the Plata River Plume Water (PPW). Results showed that intrusion of low salinity and nutrient-rich PPW stimulated the phytoplankton growth and diversity within the inner shelf region, with enhanced Chl a levels (>1.3 mg/m**3) and a great abundance of diatoms, ciliates, dinoflagellates, raphidophyceans and cryptophytes. Conversely, other diatoms (e.g. Rhizosolenia clevei), tiny species of prochlorophytes and cyanobacteria and a noticeable contribution of dinoflagellates and other flagellates associated with lower Chl a levels (<0.93 mg/m**3), characterized the TW domain, where low nutrient concentrations and deep upper mixed layer were found. The transitional mid shelf domain showed intermediate levels of both nutrients and Chl a (ranging 1.06-1.59 mg/m**3), and phytoplankton was mainly composed by dinoflagellates, such as Dinophysis spp., and gymnodinioids. Results have shown considerable phytoplankton diversity in winter at that section of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.
