A monomer, 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxy triphenylene (HPT) possesses a triphenylene core as a discotic mesogen. Polymers containing this discotic mesogen have been studied using wide-angle X-ray and electron diffraction. HPT is known to show a discotic liquid crystal phase, noted as D-ho (h for hexagonal bidimensional lattice, o for ordered molecular spacing in each column). In this paper, however, HPT Liquid crystalline phases, heated up from the crystalline state and cooled down from the isotropic state, were characterized in the diameter dimensions. In addition. the diameters of the columns are close to a parameter of two separate crystals. A core orientation was, therefore, proposed in the mesophase obtained by heating the crystalline. In order to distinguish these differences, the D-ho phase was divided to include the D-hcd and D-hco phases. Molecular modeling was performed to help our understanding of the orientation. The D-hcd and D-hco phases were used to characterize the phases of the discotic polymeric analogs by comparing their column diameters to those of the monomers. A nanocomposite of nanometer-sized magnetic granular epsilon-FeXN embedded in a nonmagnetic amorphous boron nitride matrix was prepared by ball milling mixture of alpha-Fe and hexagonal boron nitride in argon atmosphere. The grain size of the epsilon-FeXN alloy was about 10-20 nm. The nitrogen concentration in the epsilon-FeXN alloy increases with extending milling time. Both thermodynamic calculation and the present experiment show that iron and nitrogen atoms have higher alloying driving force than iron and boron atoms. Analyses of thermodynamics and kinetics about formation of the epsilon-FeXN alloy suggested that the formation of the epsilon-FeXN alloy is related to amorphization of the hexagonal boron nitride and refinement of the alpha-Fe. II was found from the present experiment that a critical grain size of the alpha-Fe reacting with nitrogen in the amorphous boron nitride is about 8 nm.

The crystal structure of H3PMo6W6O40 3C2H6O was determined by X-ray crystallography and refined to R = 0.0698 based on 2279 observed reflections to give unit cell parameters a = 16.48(2)Angstrom, c = 25.205(5)Angstrom , gamma = 120 degrees, hexagonal, space group R (3) over bar. The organic solvent molecules were characterized also by IR, H NMR spectra. Weak interaction existed between the organic solvent and the heteropoly acid in the secondary structure. The novel compound showed different behaviours in solubility, oxidizability and photosensitivity in comparison with classical dodeca heteropolyacid of molybdenum and tungsten. By solid state reaction, LiMgAlF6 and LiMgAlF6:Ln(3+) are synthetized with the ratio 120/100/110 of LiF/MgF2/AlF3, at 1008 K, in high-purity Ar stream. Their crystal structure which belongs to hexagonal system are determined by X-Ray-Diffraction (XRD). Luminescence characteristics of Ce3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and sensitization of Ce3+ to Tb3+ in LiMgAlF6 are studied. It is shown that the sensitization of Ce3+ to Tb3+ is efficient and a bright green emission is observed.

Supported catalysts, consisting of SiW12 immobilized on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) and its aluminum-substituted derivative (MCM-41) with different loadings and calcination temperatures, have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. It is shown that SiW12 retains the Keggin structure on the mesoporous molecular sieves and no HPA crystal phase is developed, even at SiW12 loadings as high as 50 wt%. In the esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol, supported catalysts exhibit a higher catalytic activity and stability and held some promise of practical application. In addition, experimental results indicate that the loaded amount of SiW12 and the calcination temperatures have a significant influence on the catalytic activity, and the existence of aluminum has also an effect on the properties of supported catalysts.

[La(NO3)(3)(OH2)(2)(phen)]. 15-crown-5 is hexagonal, P6(5), with a = 10.955(2), c = 43.769(9) Angstrom, and D-calc = 1.668 g cm(-3) for Z = 6. In the complex, two nitrogen atoms (from phen) and eight oxygen atoms (six from three bidentate nitrate anions and two from water molecules) are coordinated to the central La(III) ion, forming a coordination polyhedron which is approximately a bicapped square antiprism. The coordinated water molecules donate hydrogen bonds to the oxygen atoms of the crown ether, forming polymeric hydrogen bonded chains which wrap helically along the unit cell direction c.

The influence of lanthanum ions on the polymorphic phase of egg phosphatidylethanolamine and dielaidoylphosphatidylethanolamine (PE and DEPE) has been investigated by means of P-31-nuclear magnetic resonance (P-31-NMR) and high sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. P-31-NMR experiments show that lanthanum ions promote the formation of the hexagonal II phase at temperatures lower than those of the pure egg PE, DSC results also show that lanthanum ions induce the formation of hexagonal II phase in DEPE liposomes even al very low ion concentration, The effect of lanthanum ions on the polymorphism of PE liposomes is much greater than that of calcium.

The variation in molecule adsorption mode on pretreated highly oriented pyrolytic graphite electrodes, modified with the title complex K10H3[Dy(SiMo11O39)(2)] by cyclic voltammetry in the title complex solution, was observed in situ by electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (ECSTM) with molecular resolution in sodium sulphate solution. According to the ECSTM images and the known molecular structure we conclude that the adsorption mode of the title complex modified electrode changed during potential cycling from ''vertical'' to ''inclined'' and then ''horizontal'' or ''flat'' mode, i.e. the title complex adsorbed on the surface of electrode by one ligand of the complex at first, then began to incline and was finally adsorbed by two ligands of the complex. This result indicates that the adsorption mode on the modified electrode surface changed during potential cycling in the sulphate solution and a much more stable molecular layer was formed. The change in adlattice of adsorbates on the modified electrode surface from hexagonal to rectangular was also observed by ECSTM. A plausible model was given to explain this process.

The effects of lanthanide ions and their complexes of citrate and DTPA ligands on the fluidity of dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE) bilayers have been studied by FT-Raman spectroscopy. the results show that lanthanide ions of lower concentrationn decrease the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers and change the conformation of C C-C backbone from gauche to the trans lanthanide ions of higher concentration, however, increase the fluidity of acyl chains and increase the gauche population of C-C-C backbone. Lanthanide complex of citrate have no effect on the fluidity of acyl chains of DPPE bilayers in the region of experimental concentration, but La-DTPA complex increase slightly the fluidity of acyl chains. the results also indicated that lanthanide ion of lower concentration changed the lattice packing of hydrocarbon chains from hexagonal form to orthorhombic form, but it is still in hexagonal or distorted hexagonal lattice cell in the gel state in the presence of metal ions and lanthanide complexes of higher concentration

The infrared spectra of the bilayer system dodecylammonium chloride has been studied as a function of temperature. Unusual splitting of some vibrational modes helps us to characterize the structure of different solid states. This study provided the evidence for the occurrence of an order-disorder phase transition whose onset occurs at 327 K and its completion ends at 339 K. In the low temperature phase below 327 K, the virgin crystals form a well-ordered phase with all-transhydrocarbon chains. In the intermediate state between 327 and 339 K, the data demonstrate the introduction of intramolecular as well as intermolecular disorder. The coexistence of solid and liquid-crystal-like states is shown by the persistence of factor group splittings together with the existence of defect bands in the wide intermediate temperature range. In the high temperature phase over 339 K the crystals convert to a liquid-crystal-like system with extensive motional and conformational disorder, but still show characteristics in their infrared spectra which indicate the presence of ordered segments in the hexagonal solid phase.

Epitaxial crystallization of trans-1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) on highly oriented isotactic poly(propylene) (iPP) has been investigated at different crystallization temperatures and rates. From electron microscopy and electron diffraction, it is confirmed that epitactic growth of the low-temperature modification (monoclinic) with microcrystals of PBD on the iPP films takes place with their chain directions about +/- 50-degrees apart. No epitaxial relationship occurs between the high-temperature modification (hexagonal) of PBD and the iPP substrate. Thermal analyses of PBD-PP layered films indicate that the epitaxy has an important effect on the formation of the high-temperature modification of PBD.

The complexes named in the title (eta-5-C9H7)3Ln.OC4H8 (Ln = Nd, Gd, Er) were synthesized by the reaction of anhydrous lanthanide trichlorides with indenyl potassium and cyclooctadienyl potassium (1:2:1 molar ratio) in THF. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and H-1-NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, the crystal structures of (eta-5-C9H7)3Nd.OC4H8 (1) and (eta-5-C9H7)3Gd.OC4H8 (2) were determined by an X-ray diffraction study. Complexes 1 and 2 belong to hexagonal space group P6(3) with unit cell parameters a = b = 11.843(3), c = 10.304(4) angstrom, V = 1251.7(9) angstrom-3, D(c) = 1.49 g.cm-3, Z = 2 for 1, and a = b = 11.805(2), c = 10.236(2) angstrom, V = 1235.4(6) angstrom-3 D(c) = 1.54 g.cm-3, Z = 2 for 2. The structures were solved by Patterson and Fourier techniques and refined by least-squares to final discrepancy indices of R = 0.049, R(w) = 0.053 using 925 independent reflections with I greater-than-or-equal-to 3-sigma(I) for 1, and R = 0.023, R(w) = 0.025 using 1327 independent reflections with I greater-than-or-equal-to 3-sigma(I) for 2. Coordination numbers for Nd3+ and Gd3+ are 10; the average bond lengths Nd-O and Gd-O are 2.557(21) and 2.459(13) angstrom, respectively. The structural studies showed the complexes to have 3-fold symmetry, but the THF molecule has no such symmetry; consequently the arrangement of carbon atoms in the THF molecule are disordered.

There is a need for methodology to warm open-field plots in order to study the likely effects of global warming on ecosystems in the future. Herein, we describe the development of arrays of more powerful and efficient infrared heaters with ceramic heating elements. By tilting the heaters at 45 degrees from horizontal and combining six of them in a hexagonal array, good uniformity of warming was achieved across 3-m-diameter plots. Moreover, there do not appear to be obstacles (other than financial) to scaling to larger plots. The efficiency [eta(h) (%); thermal radiation out per electrical energy in] of these heaters was higher than that of the heaters used in most previous infrared heater experiments and can be described by: eta(h) = 10 + 25exp(-0.17 u), where u is wind speed at 2 m height (m s(-1)). Graphs are presented to estimate operating costs from degrees of warming, two types of plant canopy, and site windiness. Four such arrays were deployed over plots of grass at Haibei, Qinghai, China and another at Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA, along with corresponding reference plots with dummy heaters. Proportional integral derivative systems with infrared thermometers to sense canopy temperatures of the heated and reference plots were used to control the heater outputs. Over month-long periods at both sites, about 75% of canopy temperature observations were within 0.5 degrees C of the set-point temperature differences between heated and reference plots. Electrical power consumption per 3-m-diameter plot averaged 58 and 80 kW h day(-1) for Haibei and Cheyenne, respectively. However, the desired temperature differences were set lower at Haibei (1.2 degrees C daytime, 1.7 degrees C night) than Cheyenne (1.5 degrees C daytime, 3.0 degrees C night), and Cheyenne is a windier site. Thus, we conclude that these hexagonal arrays of ceramic infrared heaters can be a successful temperature free-air-controlled enhancement (T-FACE) system for warming ecosystem field plots.
