Proline residues in helices play an important role in the structure of proteins. The proline residue introduces a kink in the helix which varies from about 5-degrees to 50-degrees. The presence of other residues such as threonine or valine near the proline region can influence the flexibility exhibited by the kinked helix, which can have an important biological role. In the present paper, the constraint introduced by threonine and valine on a proline helix is investigated by molecular dynamics studies. The systems considered am (1) a poly-alanine helix with threonine-proline residues (TP) and (2) a poly-alanine helix with valine-threonine-proline residues (VTP), in the middle. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out on these two systems for 500 ps. The results are analyzed in terms of structural transitions, bend-related parameters and sidechain orientations.

Microstructural and superconducting properties of YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films grown in situ on bare sapphire by pulsed laser deposition using YBa2Cu3O7-x targets doped with 7 and 10 wt% Ag have been studied. Ag-doped films grown at 730 degrees C on sapphire have shown very significant improvement over the undoped YBa2Cu3O7-x films grown under identical condition. A zero resistance temperature of 90 K and a critical current density of 1.2 x 10(6) A/cm(2) at 77 K have been achieved on bare sapphire for the first time. Improved connectivity among grains and reduced reaction rate between the substrate and the film caused due to Ag in the film are suggested to be responsible for this greatly improved transport properties.

he effect of pressure on the conductivity of AgI-Ag2 O-MoO3 glasses has been reexamined. A conductivity maximum is observed around 0.7 GPa. No variation of the sample temperature is noted under pressure. The results are found to agree well with the cluster-tissue model.

: Within two months of the first report on quasicrystals in PRL in November 1984, Indian research which had a 'premature discovery' in 1978 in this area got under way, In the past nine years these efforts have led to original discoveries relating to new types of quasicrystalline phases as well as extensive investigations involving tiling theory, hyperspace, positron annihilation and electrical properties, These researches have been multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary. Enlightened and generous funding was extended by DST from 1986 by recognizing it as a thrust area in basic research via SERC and US-India Funds. International recognition, subjective though it is, in the form of citation of Indian papers, invited lectures and reviews, books as well as the membership of International Advisory Committee has followed and is among the highest in the fields of condensed matter science covered at the Bangalore meeting, Future directions pertaining to the exploration of mechanical and electronic properties as well as structures beyond the quasicrystalline order will be pointed out.

Plant seeds usually have high concentrations of proteinase and amylase inhibitors. These inhibitors exhibit a wide range of specificity, stability and oligomeric structure. In this communication, we report analysis of sequences that show statistically significant similarity to the double-headed alpha-amylase/trypsin inhibitor of ragi (Eleusine coracana). Our aim is to understand their evolutionary and structural features. The 14 sequences of this family that are available in the SWISSPROT database form three evolutionarily distinct branches. The branches relate to enzyme specificities and also probably to the oligomeric state of the proteins and not to the botanical class of the plant from which the enzymes are derived. This suggests that the enzyme specificities of the inhibitors evolved before the divergence of commercially cultivated cereals. The inhibitor sequences have three regions that display periodicity in hydrophobicity. It is likely that this feature reflects extended secondary structure in these segments. One of the most variable regions of the polypeptide corresponds to a loop, which is most probably exposed in the native structure of the inhibitors and is responsible for the inhibitory property.

The three dimensional structure of a 32 residue three disulfide scorpion toxin, BTK-2, from the Indian red scorpion Mesobuthus tamulus has been determined using isotope edited solution NMR methods. Samples for structural and electrophysiological studies were prepared using recombinant DNA methods. Electrophysiological studies show that the peptide is active against hK(v)1.1 channels. The structure of BTK-2 was determined using 373 distance restraints from NOE data, 66 dihedral angle restraints from NOE, chemical shift and scalar coupling data, 6 constraints based on disulfide linkages and 8 constraints based on hydrogen bonds. The root mean square deviation (r.m.s.d) about the averaged co-ordinates of the backbone (N, C-alpha, C') and all heavy atoms are 0.81 +/- 0.23 angstrom and 1.51 +/- 0.29 angstrom respectively. The backbone dihedral angles (phi and psi) for all residues occupy the favorable and allowed regions of the Ramachandran map. The three dimensional structure of BTK-2 is composed of three well defined secondary structural regions that constitute the alpha-beta-beta, structural motif. Comparisons between the structure of BTK-2 and other closely related scorpion toxins pointed towards distinct differences in surface properties that provide insights into the structure-function relationships among this important class of voltage-gated potassium channel inhibiting peptides. In this investigation, the influence of microstructure on the high temperature creep behaviour of Ti-24Al-11Nb alloy has been studied. Different microstructures are produced by devising suitable heat treatments from the beta phase field. Creep tests are conducted in the temperature range of 923-1113 K, over a wide stress range at each temperature, employing the impression creep technique. The creep behaviour is found tb be sensitive to the crystallographic texture as well as to the details of microstructure. Best creep resistance is shown when the microstructure contains smaller alpha(2) plates and a lower beta volume fraction. This can be understood in terms of the dislocation barriers offered by alpha(2) beta boundaries and the case of plastic flow in the beta phase at high temperatures.

EHT calculations on heterotrinuclear cobalt(III) complexes of the type [Cu{(OH)(2)Co(L(4))}(2)](4+) where L(4) denotes (en)(2) or (NH3)(4), en = ethylenediamine and their component species have been carried out. The results regarding bonding and structure for the trinuclear complexes are compared with those for the monomer components such as [Co(en)(2)(OH)(2)](+), [Co(NH3)(4)(OH)(2)](+) and [Cu(OH)(4)](2-) are discussed.

In this paper, we examine the major predictions made so far regarding the nature of climate change and its impacts on our region in the light of the known errors of the set of models and the observations over this century. The major predictions of the climate models about the impact of increased concentration of greenhouse gases ave at variance with the observations over the Indian region during the last century characterized by such increases and global warming. It is important to note that as far as the Indian region is concerned, the impact of year-to-year variation of the monsoon will continue to be dominant over longer period changes even in the presence of global warming. Recent studies have also brought out the uncertainties in the yields simulated by crop models. It is suggested that a deeper understanding of the links between climate and agricultural productivity is essential for generating reliable predictions of impact of climate change. Such an insight is also required for identifying cropping patterns and management practices which are tailored for sustained maximum yield in the face of the vagaries of the monsoon.
