Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller), popularly known in Brazil as babosa, has a long history of use as medicinal plant for different therapeutic purposes. The components of the plant extract are present in various products of human use, mainly for nutritional and cosmetics purposes. However, some studies suggest that this extract might also have carcinogenic activity. The aloe vera extract is a complex mixture of bioactive compounds. The study of isolated compounds may contribute to elucidate contradictory results about the effects related to the consumption of the plant, as well as their mechanisms of action. One of the most important compound from Aloe vera is aloe-emodin, which is a secondary metabolite generated in the intestinal tract. Putative antimicrobial and antitumor effects were previously attributed to aloe-emodin. Although the exposure of urothelial cells to aloe-emodin was already reported in the literature, only one study showed its effects on urothelial cells, suggesting that aloe-emodin inhibits the viability of T24 cancer cells due to apoptosis induction. Since there is no sufficient information about the effects of aloe-emodin on urothelial cells, and low efficiency in the treatment of bladder cancer currently, the present study aims to evaluate the hypothesis that the treatment with aloe-emodin could impact the behavior of other urothelial cell lines in vitro. Therefore, the in vitro IC50 exposure of aloe-emodin to human immortalized neoplastic urothelial cells will be determinated in order to verify possible differences in the behavior of urothelial cells in vitro treated with aloe-emodin in comparison with untreated cells. Furthermore, differences between cell lines will be also evaluated

Water scarcity is becoming an increasing problem and more evident worldwide, rainwater utilization is characterized for being one of the simplest and cheapest solutions to preserve drinking water and is a known alternative technology and used to promote sustainability in buildings and reducing pressure on surface waters, it would also reduce runoff and can minimize flooding. The rainwater, while not potable may be used in potable water usage activities, and may thus saving 30 to 40% of potable water. In this work one can see the importance of the capture and use of rainwater (CAAC), bringing economy, to reduce consumption of potable water, reducing the problem of water shortage, and which methods and materials needed to cause its implementation. The work also promoted the characterization of rainwater in the city of Guaratinguetá (SP) and studied its potential use in public housing, calculating the volume needed for implementation of the tank and the cost to implement all rainwater utilization system, but because it is a region with a median rainfall index and the popular houses present an area of small water capitation, the result was not satisfactory. The cost for implementation was high and the financial return was well above average. The government should encourage and support more CAAC, as not thinking about the financial side is advisable to be widespread throughout the country, the benefits it can bring

The concept of vulnerability permits the comprehension of the exposition to the infection of the HIV virus without reducing it to the focus in the individual behaviors of non-adoption of the preventive practices, but considering the cultural factors that participate of the context in which these behaviors occur. Among these factors, it is important to consider the gender issues. This qualitative- descriptive study had as an aim to identify the presence of normative patterns of sexuality and gender in articles and sections about sex and sexuality in 18 editions of the Capricho magazine and 10 edition of the Playboy magazine published in 2010, through the content analysis, discussing the relation between the patterns identified and the way how the information about prevention are transmitted by the magazines’ discourses. It was discussed how the lack of information and the way how these patterns are crystallized can contribute to reinforce the vulnerability.

The rehabilitation of edentulous areas with osseointegrated dental implants is a well-documented, predictable procedure in the literature, with high success rates. However, the lack of bone at the recipient bed or proximity to anatomic structures limits the rehabilitation procedure especially at the posterior mandible. Thus, short implants are an alternative treatment for such cases of severe bone resorption. The purpose of this study was to review the success rate of short implants, especially those based in the posterior mandible and to show a clinical case. A literature review was made on electronic databases PubMed and Bireme with articles published between the years 2005 to 2012, using the keywords "short dental implants". It was concluded that the success rates of short implants are similar to those presented by conventional implants but still related to their geometry and surface treatment. Also, short implants can be considered as a viable alternative for the rehabilitation of severely resorbed jaws. However, many authors consider that more research is necessary when a short implant is compared to a long dental implant.

The scarcity of resources which frequently confronts the State, coupled with demands to provide assistance to a needy population, requires that public administrators formulate efficient and effective policies to pursue its goals. It is fundamental that such policies are based on solid information of existing conditions. As such, the availability of reliable and updated socio-economic indicators is an important tool on which to fundament public policies. The present paper aims to present a Municipal Development Index – Municipal Management Development Index (IDGM) – calculated for the city of Itabaiana/SE, and is divided in two sections. The first discusses the concept of economic development and the evolution of measurement frameworks, with emphasis on the IHD and some of its limitations. The second section describes an estimated IDGM for the city of Itabaiana, as well as its methodology, results, and a brief comparative analysis with four municipalities from the state of São Paulo. Itabaiana’s IDGM reached 849 points (the maximum is 1.000), which infers a good developmental condition.

With the increase in world population and scarcity of natural resources, efficient use of fertilizers becomes necessary for intensive agriculture. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, UNESP in Botucatu-SP. The treatments were derived from the combination of the soil salinity (E.C: 1.0, 3.0, 6.0, 9.0 and 12.0 dS m-1), Fertigation management (M1 =traditional and M2 = with control of the ionic concentration of the soil solution) and beet cultivars (C1= Early Wonder and C2 = Itapuã) in a 5x2x2 factorial design with four replications in a randomized block design. Throughout the cultivation, the following variables were evaluated: height, stem diameter, length and diameter of plant roots. The height of the plant presented differently according to the Fertigation management and sensitive to levels of electrical conductivity in the soil. The diameter of the roots showed reductions of 3.55 and 2.48 mm for C1 and C2, respectively, every unit increase in electrical conductivity (EC) to M1. Based on the functional relationship of the best adjustment between the diameter of the roots and electrical conductivity in M2 gave an estimated maximum diameter of 90.78 mm to 94.67 mm for C1 and C2.
