Modal cohesion and subordination. The Finnish conditional and jussive moods in comparison to the French subjunctive This study examines verb moods in subordinate clauses in French and Finnish. The first part of the analysis deals with the syntax and semantics of the French subjunctive, mood occurring mostly in subordinate positions. The second part investigates Finnish verb moods. Although subordinate positions in Finnish grammar have no special finite verb form, certain uses of Finnish verb moods have been compared to those of subjunctives and conjunctives in other languages. The present study focuses on the subordinate uses of the Finnish conditional and jussive (i.e. the third person singular and plural of the imperative mood). The third part of the analysis discusses the functions of subordinate moods in contexts beyond complex sentences. The data used for the analysis include 1834 complex sentences gathered from newspapers, online discussion groups and blog texts, as well as audio-recorded interviews and conversations. The data thus consist of both written and oral texts as well as standard and non-standard variants. The analysis shows that the French subjunctive codes theoretical modality. The subjunctive does not determine the temporal and modal meaning of the event, but displays the event as virtual. In a complex sentence, the main clause determines the temporal and modal space within which the event coded by the subjunctive clause is interpreted. The subjunctive explicitly indicates that the space constructed in the main clause extends its scope over the subordinate clause. The subjunctive can therefore serve as a means for creating modal cohesion in the discourse. The Finnish conditional shares the function of making explicit the modal link between the components of a complex construction with the French subjunctive, but the two moods differ in their semantics. The conditional codes future time and can therefore occur only in non-factual or counterfactual contexts, whereas the event expressed by French subjunctive clauses can also be interpreted as realized. Such is the case when, for instance, generic and habitual meaning is involved. The Finnish jussive mood is used in a relatively limited number of subordinate clause types, but in these contexts its modal meaning is strikingly close to that of the French subjunctive. The permissive meaning, typical of the jussive in main clause positions, is modified in complex sentences so that it entails inter-clausal relation, namely concession. Like the French subjunctive, the jussive codes theoretical modal meaning with no implication of the truth value of the proposition. Finally, the analysis shows that verb moods mark modal cohesion, not only on the syntagmatic level (namely in complexe sentences), but also on the paradigmatic axis of discourse in order to create semantic links over entire segments of talk. In this study, the subjunctive thus appears, not as an empty category without function, as it is sometimes described, but as an open form that conveys the temporal and modal meanings emerging from the context.

Some tetra substituted furans and thiophenes were reacted with methyl acrylate under BF3-etherate catalysed Diels-Alder conditions. While the derivatives of furan underwent Diels-Alder reaction in a facile manner, an observation of 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dianisylthiophene undergoing Diels-Alder reaction with methyl acrylate is remarkable. Conductivity measurements as a function of temperature and partial pressures of SOs, SO2, and O2, and transference experiments indicate that the transport number of Na + ions is unity in Na2SO4-I. A concentration cell based on this electrolyte Pt, O2' + SO2' + SOs'/Na2SO4-I/SOa" + SO~" + O~", Pt produces emf's that are in agreement with those calculated from the Nernst equation when equilibrium is assumed between the gas species at the electrodes. The cell can be used for monitoring the SO#SOs pollution in air, and in combination with an oxygen probe can be used for the determination of SO=/SOs concentrations in coal combustion reactors, for the evaluation of the partial pressure of $2 in coal gasification systems, and for emission control in nonferrous smelters using sulfide ores. The probe is similar to that developed recently by Gauthier et aL (4, 5) using K=SO4 as the electrolyte, but can operate at higher pressures of SO3. Because of the greater polarizing power of the Na+ ion compared to the K + ion, Na2S207 is less stable and can be formed only at a considerably higher pressure of S03 than that required for K~20~.

The air we breathe is being polluted by activities such as vehicles; burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels; and manufacturing chemicals. Air pollution can even come from smaller, everyday activities such as cooking, space heating, and degreasing and painting operations. These activities add gases and particles to the air we breathe. When these gases and particles accumulate in the air in high enough concentrations, they can harm us and our environment. The module on Air Pollution deals with the various sources of air pollution and the associated environmental and health impacts. It also discusses the appropriate measures to control/prevent the same.

Carbon monoxide, a major pollutant from the cupola, is poisonous and flammable. It can vary from 12 to 25% in cupola emissions. Carbon monoxide content in cupola emissions can be reduced by the post-combustion air input at the appropriate level into the stack. Scientific support to this has been provided by simulation of the combustion process in the cupola. Location and the extent of input of air for post combustion into the stack have been determined.

In one attempt, the minor regioisomer, 4b, was isolated from the mixture in 6% yield by fractional crystallization. Palladacycles 3a/3b and 4a/4b, upon stirring in CH2Cl2/MeCN (1/1, v/v) mixture at ambient condition for S days, afforded Pd{eta(3)-allyl,(KN)-N-1)-C-5(C(O)OR)(2)Ph3C-(C(O)OR)C6H3Me-3(N=C(NH Ar)(2))(-2)}Br] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; R = Me (5a/5b), Et (6a/6b)) in 94 and 93% yields, respectively. Palladacycles 3a/3b and 4a/4b, upon reaction with AgOTf in CH2CH2/Me2C(O) (1/1, v/v) mixture at ambient temperature for 15 min, afforded Pd{kappa(3)(N,C,O)-O=C(OR)C5Ph3(C(O)OR)C(C(O)OR)C6H3Me-3(N=C(NHAr)(2 ))-2}(OTf)] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; R = Me (7a/7b), Et (8a/8b)) in 79 and 77% yields, respectively. Palladacycles 7a/7b and 8a/ 8b, upon reflux in PhC1 separately for 6 h, or palladacycles 5a/5b and 6a/6b, upon treatment with AgOTf in CH2Cl2/Me2C(O) (7/3, v/v) mixture for 15 min, afforded Pd{(eta(2)-Ph)C5Ph2(C(O)OR)kappa(2)(C,N)-C(C(O)OR)C6H3Me-3(N=C(NHAr) (2))-2}(OTf)] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; R = Me (9a/9h), Et (10a/10b)) in >= 87% yields. Palladacycles 9a/9b, upon stirring in MeCN in the presence of excess NaOAc followed by crystallization of the reaction mixture in the same solvent, afforded Pd{kappa(3)(N,C,C)-(C6H4)C5Ph2(C(O)OMe)(2)C(C(O)OMe)(2)C6H3Me-3(N=C( NHAr)(2))-2}(NCMe)] (Ar = 2-MeC6H4; 11a/11b) in 82% yield. The new palladacycles were characterized by analytical, IR, and NMR (H-1 and C-13) spectroscopic techniques, and the molecular structures of 2, 3a, 4a, 4b, 5a, 6a, 7a, 9a, 10a, and 11a-d(3) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The frameworks in the aforementioned palladacycles, except that present in 2, are unprecedented. Plausible pathways for the formation of new palladacycles and the influence of the guanidine unit in 1, substituents in alkynes, reaction conditions, and electrophilicity of the bromide and the triflate upon the frameworks of the insertion products have been discussed.
