Several aspects beyond the restorative phase itself such as orthodontic movement and periodontal treatment must be considered in cases of closure of diastemas. In such cases, a multidisciplinary approach is essential. As patients during orthodontic treatment may show high risk of developing dental caries and periodontal disease, inflammation of the gingival tissue is a common finding. For this reason, a preliminary basic periodontal treatment is critical to the success of restorative procedure. In addition, postoperative care and instruction in phonetics, oral hygiene and periodic control must be considered by professionals and patients. Thus, this paper demonstrates through a case report, pre and postoperative issues that should be considered during the closure of diastemas using a layering technique with resin composites

Efeitos de instrução e de treino parental em cuidadores de crianças com câncer

Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar os efeitos de instrução e de treino parental sobre comportamentos observados em cuidadores e em crianças com diagnóstico de câncer durante procedimento de punção venosa em ambulatório. Participaram nove cuidadores em três condições (Rotina, Manual e Treino). Fez-se análise de características familiares, estilo parental, efeitos de um manual de instruções e de treino parental, com sessões de observação direta do comportamento durante punção venosa. Os resultados apontam efeito positivo do manual para mudança de comportamento em curto prazo. Após treino parental, observou-se aumento nas taxas de monitoria positiva do cuidador, com relatos de generalização desses comportamentos para outros contextos. Discute-se a importância do estilo parental como fator de proteção à criança com câncer.

Continent urinary diversion

During the last decade continent urinary diversion, especially orthotopic bladder substitution has become increasingly popular following radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. In general, if sphincter sparing surgery is possible, orthotopic bladder substitution is performed, if not then continent catheterisable reservoirs are a viable option. Strict patient selection criteria and improved surgical technique have had a positive influence on outcome, not only on survival but also on quality of life issues. It is becoming increasingly obvious, that a nerve sparing surgical technique not only improves sexual function but also continence. In addition, the length of the intestinal segment has an influence on continence and the degree of metabolic consequences, which are discussed in detail. Postoperative surveillance and instruction of patients is of utmost value for good functional results. Overall patient satisfaction and quality of life seem comparable in the various types of continent urinary diversions, and improved when compared to a urinary stoma. Continent urinary diversion offers a good quality of life with few long-term complications and should be considered the treatment of choice in the majority of patients, independent of sex.

An Analysis of the Influence of Students´ Technological Culture on Their Technology

decade has raised the interest among the research community on the acceptance and use of these systems by both teachers and students. At first, the implementation of LMS was based on their technical design and the adaptation of the learning processes to the virtual environment, neglecting students’ characteristics when the systems were deployed, which led to expensive and failing implementations. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) proposes a framework which allows the study of the acceptance and use of technology that takes into consideration the students’ characteristics and how they affect the acceptance and the degree of use of educational technology. This study questions the role of the user’s attitude towards use of LMS and uses the UTAUT to examine the moderating effect of technological culture in the adoption of LMS in Spain. The results from the comparison and analysis of three different models confirm the relevance of attitude towards use as an antecedent of intention to use the system, as well as the important moderating effect of gender and technological culture. The discussion of results suggests the need for a more in-depth analysis and interrelations of cultural dimensions in the adoption of educational technologies and learning management systems

BALAÃO – O QUE OUVE AS PALAVRAS DE EL, TEM O CONHECIMENTO DE ELYON E VÊ A VISÃO DE SHADDAI: UM ESTUDO DE NÚMEROS 22-24

A presente pesquisa busca avaliar exegeticamente o texto que se encontra na Bíblia, especificamente no livro de Números capítulos 22-24 que relata sobre um personagem conhecido como Balaão. A pesquisa tem também como objeto o estudo sobre o panteão de divindades relatado no mesmo texto, assim como também o estudo dos textos descobertos em Deir Alla, na Jordânia, que apresentam um personagem designado como Balaão, possivelmente o mesmo personagem de Nm 22-24. A motivação que levou ao desenvolvimento dessa pesquisa foi o fato de se ter deparado com os conceitos dos diversos nomes divinos exibidos no texto, além da questão do profetismo fora de Israel, assim como as possibilidades hermenêuticas que se abrem para a leitura desse texto bíblico. O conceito geral sempre foi o de que Israel era a única nação onde existiam “verdadeiros” profetas e uma adoração a um único Deus, o “monoteísmo”. O que despertou interesse foi perceber, especialmente por meio da leitura dos livros bíblicos, que o profetismo não se restringiu somente a Israel. Ele antecede à formação do antigo Israel e já existia no âmbito das terras do antigo Oriente Médio, e que Israel ainda demorou muito tempo para ser monoteísta. Quem é esse Balaão, filho de Beor? Estudaremos sobre sua pessoa e sua missão. Examinaremos os textos de Deir Alla sobre Balaão e sua natureza de personagem mediador entre o divino e o humano. Esse personagem é apresentado como um grande profeta e que era famoso como intérprete de presságios divinos. Analisaremos a importante questão sobre o panteão de deuses que são apresentados na narrativa de Balaão nomeados como: El, Elyon Elohim e Shaddai, além de Yahweh. Entendemos, a princípio, que o texto possui uma conexão com a sociedade na qual foi criado e usando da metodologia exegética, faremos uma análise da narrativa em questão, buscando compreender o sentido do texto, dentro de seu cenário histórico e social. Cenário este, que nos apresentou esse profeta, não israelita, que profere bênçãos dos deuses sobre Israel e que, além disso, pronuncia maldições sobre os inimigos desse mesmo Israel. Percebemos que, parte do texto pesquisado é apresentado sob a ótica de Israel sobre as outras nações. A pesquisa defende, portanto, que o texto de Nm 22-24, além de nos apresentar um profeta fora de Israel igual aos profetas da Bíblia, defende que, o panteão de divindades também era adorado por Israel e que tais nomes são epítetos de uma mesma divindade, no caso YHWH. Defende, também, um delineamento de um projeto de domínio político e militar de Israel sobre as nações circunvizinhas.

Sobre os cumes dos montes sacrificam Um estudo em Oseias 4,4-19

A tese divide-se em três capítulos: no primeiro, estudam-se a forma e o lugar de Oseias 4,4-19; no segundo, os conteúdos da passagem bíblica em foco; e, no terceiro capítulo, abordam-se outros textos do livro de Oseias que corroborem com a tese apresentada a partir da análise de Oseias 4,4-19, feita nos capítulos anteriores. Estudar Oseias é abrir possibilidade de dar voz, novamente, ao antigo profeta e ouvir-lhe falar para a sua situação de israelita e representar seus irmãos na dura realidade da vida em Israel no século 8º a. C. O trecho selecionado para estudo apresenta muitos aspectos dessa vida, caracterizada por declarações, expressões e imagens vívidas, como a montar um quadro do seu cotidiano. E aqui reside o ponto nevrálgico das reflexões sobre a passagem bíblica: um cotidiano condenado pelo profeta, em nome de Javé, por encobrir, por meio de suas aparências e justificativas, o abuso de pessoas, até mediante a religião. O profeta não condena os israelitas, tampouco as mulheres (4,13-14), mas os senhores do poder , dentre os quais estão os sacerdotes, por deixarem suas responsabilidades em favor do povo de Javé para seguirem seus próprios interesses, a custa desse mesmo povo. Para reforçar suas acusações (e lamentações, vv.6 e 11), Oseias se utiliza, metaforicamente, de termos como a raiz hebraica hnz znh e palavras derivadas, a qual é entendida nesta tese como ser ou tornar-se independente , pois aqueles que mandam no país, têm procedido de maneira autônoma, longe das tradições javistas pautadas no verdadeiro conhecimento (tu^D^ da at) e na instrução (hr*oT torah) de deus, que podem ser percebidos na prática do direito (fP*v=m! mispat) e da solidariedade (ds#j# hesed). Oseias não pretende desmascarar cultos idolátricos pela simples preocupação de preservar ideias religiosas, e nem se preocupa com práticas, mesmo as de prostituição, por questões moralistas. Ele protesta contra a realidade de uma vida condenada ao esmagamento por grupos que, mostrando-se tão religiosos, tornaram-se, de fato, independentes do Javé do êxodo, do Javé dos pobres.

May the contact lens force be with you

FULL TEXT: Like many people one of my favourite pastimes over the holiday season is to watch the great movies that are offered on the television channels and new releases in the movie theatres or catching up on those DVDs that you have been wanting to watch all year. Recently we had the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, ‘The Force Awakens’, which is reckoned to become the highest grossing movie of all time, and the latest offering from James Bond, ‘Spectre’ (which included, for the car aficionados amongst you, the gorgeous new Aston Martin DB10). It is always amusing to see how vision correction or eye injury is dealt with by movie makers. Spy movies and science fiction movies have a freehand to design aliens with multiples eyes on stalks or retina scanning door locks or goggles that can see through walls. Eye surgery is usually shown in some kind of day case simplified laser treatment that gives instant results, apart from the great scene in the original ‘Terminator’ movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger's android character encounters an injury to one eye and then proceeds to remove the humanoid covering to this mechanical eye over a bathroom sink. I suppose it is much more difficult to try and include contact lenses in such movies. Although you may recall the film ‘Charlie's Angels’, which did have a scene where one of the Angels wore a contact lens that had a retinal image imprinted on it so she could by-pass a retinal scan door lock and an Eddy Murphy spy movie ‘I-Spy’, where he wore contact lenses that had electronic gadgetry that allowed whatever he was looking at to be beamed back to someone else, a kind of remote video camera device. Maybe we aren’t quite there in terms of devices available but these things are probably not the behest of science fiction anymore as the technology does exist to put these things together. The technology to incorporate electronics into contact lenses is being developed and I am sure we will be reporting on it in the near future. In the meantime we can continue to enjoy the unrealistic scenes of eye swapping as in the film ‘Minority Report’ (with Tom Cruise). Much more closely to home, than in a galaxy far far away, in this issue you can find articles on topics much nearer to the closer future. More and more optometrists in the UK are becoming registered for therapeutic work as independent prescribers and the number is likely to rise in the near future. These practitioners will be interested in the review paper by Michael Doughty, who is a member of the CLAE editorial panel (soon to be renamed the Jedi Council!), on prescribing drugs as part of the management of chronic meibomian gland dysfunction. Contact lenses play an active role in myopia control and orthokeratology has been used not only to help provide refractive correction but also in the retardation of myopia. In this issue there are three articles related to this topic. Firstly, an excellent paper looking at the link between higher spherical equivalent refractive errors and the association with slower axial elongation. Secondly, a paper that discusses the effectiveness and safety of overnight orthokeratology with high-permeability lens material. Finally, a paper that looks at the stabilisation of early adult-onset myopia. Whilst we are always eager for new and exciting developments in contact lenses and related instrumentation in this issue of CLAE there is a demonstration of a novel and practical use of a smartphone to assisted anterior segment imaging and suggestions of this may be used in telemedicine. It is not hard to imagine someone taking an image remotely and transmitting that back to a central diagnostic centre with the relevant expertise housed in one place where the information can be interpreted and instruction given back to the remote site. Back to ‘Star Wars’ and you will recall in the film ‘The Phantom Menace’ when Qui-Gon Jinn first meets Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine he takes a sample of his blood and sends a scan of it back to Obi-Wan Kenobi to send for analysis and they find that the boy has the highest midichlorian count ever seen. What can practitioner perceptions tell us about our subject?

Part of the challenge of fostering learning is to open up learner minds to new possibilities or ways of thinking but is what we are encouraging learners to think really that different from the current practitioner conceptions? Having been uncomfortable with the focus of textbooks for the teaching of the core concept, the nature of a program, in the teaching of object-­oriented programming, we sought to discover how practitioner’s conceived the concept. Our findings provide a framework for understanding the different ways of conceiving the concept and the features that distinguish these conceptions. How could these conceptions and their critical features influence the focus in teaching especially in relation to computational thinking?
