Several freshwater phytoplanktonic species (eukaryotic and prokaryotic) were grown in batch cultures up to stationary phase and quantified by chlorophyll a analysis. The complexation properties (conditional stability constant and total ligand concentration) of their exudates were investigated by complexometric titrations of the culture media using either copper or lead ion-selective electrodes. For most algae, Scatchard plot analysis of the titration data revealed two classes of copper-complexing ligands, one weaker and the other stronger. Strong copper-complexing agents were produced by Cyanophyta mainly in stationary growth phase. During exponential phase, ligand concentrations and the affinity for copper were similar for both Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta. Complexation parameters for Chlorophyta exudates were similar for both growth phases: exponential and stationary. In contrast, ligand concentrations were similar for Cyanophyta, but the conditional stability constants (the strength of association between ligand and metal) were different. Weak lead-complexing ligands were produced exclusively by two Chlorophyta.

A new strategy for minimization of Cu2+ and Pb2+ interferences on the spectrophotometric determination of Cd2+ by the Malachite green (MG)-iodide reaction using electrolytic deposition of interfering species and solid phase extraction of Cd2+ in flow system is proposed. The electrolytic cell comprises two coiled Pt electrodes concentrically assembled. When the sample solution is electrolyzed in a mixed solution containing 5% (v/v) HNO3, 0.1% (v/v) H2SO4 and 0.5 M NaCl, Cu2+ is deposited as Cu on the cathode, Pb2+ is deposited as PbO2 on the anode while Cd2+ is kept in solution. After electrolysis, the remaining solution passes through an AG1-X8 resin (chloride form) packed minicolumn in which Cd2+ is extracted as CdCl4/2-. Electrolyte compositions, flow rates, timing, applied current, and electrolysis time was investigated. With 60 s electrolysis time, 0.25 A applied current, Pb2+ and Cu2+ levels up to 50 and 250 mg 1-1, respectively, can be tolerated without interference. For 90 s resin loading time, a linear relationship between absorbance and analyte concentration in the 5.00-50.0 μg Cd 1-1 range (r2 = 0.9996) is obtained. A throughput of 20 samples per h is achieved, corresponding to about 0.7 mg MG and 500 mg KI and 5 ml sample consumed per determination. The detection limit is 0.23 μg Cd 1-1. The accuracy was checked for cadmium determination in standard reference materials, vegetables and tap water. Results were in agreement with certified values of standard reference materials and with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry at 95% confidence level. The R.S.D. for plant digests and water containing 13.0 μg Cd 1-1 was 3.85% (n = 12). The recoveries of analyte spikes added to the water and vegetable samples ranged from 94 to 104%. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of copper vapor laser radiation on the radicular wall of human teeth. Materials and Methods: Immediately after the crowns of 10 human uniradicular teeth were cut along the cement-enamel junction, a chemical-surgical preparation of the radicular canals was completed. Then the roots were longitudinally sectioned to allow for irradiation of the surfaces of the dentin walls of the root canals. The hemi-roots were separated into two groups: one (control) with five hemi-roots that were not irradiated, and another (experimental) with 15 hemi-roots divided into three subgroups that were submitted to the following exposure times: 0.02,0.05, and 0.1 s. A copper vapor laser (510.6 nm) with a total average power of 6.5 W in green emission, frequency of 16.000 Hz, and pulse duration of 30 ns was used. Results: The results obtained by scanning electron microscope analysis showed the appearance of a cavity in the region of laser beam impact, with melting, recrystallization, and cracking on the edges of the dentin of the cavity due to heat diffusion. Conclusions: We determined that the copper vapor laser produces significant morphologic changes in the radicular wall of human teeth when using the parameters in this study. However, further research should be done to establish parameters that are compatible with dental structure in order to eliminate thermal damages. © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Background. Obesity has been associated with a variety of disease such as type II diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and atherosclerosis. Evidences have shown that exercise training promotes beneficial effects on these disorders, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether physical preconditioning prevents the deleterious effect of high caloric diet in vascular reactivity of rat aortic and mesenteric rings. Methods. Male Wistar rats were divided into sedentary (SD); trained (TR); sedentary diet (SDD) and trained diet (TRD) groups. Run training (RT) was performed in sessions of 60 min, 5 days/week for 12 weeks (70-80% VO2max). Triglycerides, glucose, insulin and nitrite/nitrate concentrations (NOx -) were measured. Concentration- response curves to acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) were obtained. Expression of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) was assessed by Western blotting. Results. High caloric diet increased triglycerides concentration (SDD: 216 ± 25 mg/dl) and exercise training restored to the baseline value (TRD: 89 ± 9 mg/dl). Physical preconditioning significantly reduced insulin levels in both groups (TR: 0.54 ± 0.1 and TRD: 1.24 ± 0.3 ng/ml) as compared to sedentary animals (SD: 0.87 ± 0.1 and SDD: 2.57 ± 0.3 ng/ml). On the other hand, glucose concentration was slightly increased by high caloric diet, and RT did not modify this parameter (SD: 126 ± 6; TR: 140 ± 8; SDD: 156 ± 8 and TRD 153 ± 9 mg/dl). Neither high caloric diet nor RT modified NO x - levels (SD: 27 ± 4; TR: 28 ± 6; SDD: 27 ± 3 and TRD: 30 ± 2 μM). Functional assays showed that high caloric diet impaired the relaxing response to ACh in mesenteric (about 13%), but not in aortic rings. RT improved the relaxing responses to ACh either in aortic (28%, for TR and 16%, to TRD groups) or mesenteric rings (10%, for TR and 17%, to TRD groups) that was accompanied by up-regulation of SOD-1 expression and reduction in triglycerides levels. Conclusion. The improvement in endothelial function by physical preconditioning in mesenteric and aortic arteries from high caloric fed-rats was directly related to an increase in NO bioavailability to the smooth muscle mostly due to SOD-1 up regulation. © 2008 de Moraes et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

The present work develops and optimizes a method to determine copper in samples of feces and fish feed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) through the direct introduction of slurries of the samples into the spectrometer's graphite tube coated internally with metallic rhodium and tungsten carbide that acts as chemical modifiers. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) calculated for 20 readings of the blank of the standard slurries (0.50% m/v of feces or feed devoid of copper) were 0.24 and 0.79 μg L -1 for the standard feces slurries and 0.26 and 0.87 μg L -1 for the standard feed slurries. The proposed method was applied in studies of absorption of copper in different fish feeds and their results proved compatible with that obtained from samples mineralized by acid digestion using microwave oven. © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2008.

This work reports on the synthesis of a copper(II) coordination compound with 4,4-oxibis(benzoate) (obb) and trans-1,2- bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (bpe) ligands. The complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed a 3D polymeric structure. Each copper center is surrounded by four oxygen atoms at the basal plane and one nitrogen atom and one copper atom at the axial positions, revealing a distorted octahedral geometry. Four carboxylic groups bridge two copper atoms, forming a cage-like structure, with the distance between the metallic centers being 2.656(1)Å. 2008 © The Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry.

This work describes a method to determine Cu at wide range concentrations in a single run without need of further dilutions employing high-resolution continuum source flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Different atomic lines for Cu at 324. 754 nm, 327. 396 nm, 222. 570 nm, 249. 215 nm and 224. 426 nm were evaluated and main figures of merit established. Absorbance measurements at 324. 754 nm, 249. 215 nm and 224. 426 nm allows the determination of Cu in the 0. 07-5. 0 mg L -1, 5. 0-100 mg L -1 and 100-800 mg L -1 concentration intervals respectively with linear correlation coefficients better than 0. 998. Limits of detection were 21 μg L -1, 310 μg L -1 and 1400 μg L -1 for 324. 754 nm, 249. 215 nm and 224. 426 nm, respectively and relative standard deviations (n = 12) were ≤ 2. 7%. The proposed method was applied to water samples spiked with Cu and the results were in agreement at a 95% of confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained by line-source flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

This work studied the influence of the rare earth (Ce3+ and Ce4+) elements concentration in polysiloxane flints deposited on copper by dip-coating process, and evaluated their resistance in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl medium. Classical electrochemistry techniques were used as open circuit potential, polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that by adding low concentration of Ce4+ ions, the coating prevents the electrolyte uptake any longer retarding the substrate degradation consequently. ©The Electrochemical Society.

Copper Pentacyanonitrosylferrate (NCuNP) nanoparticles were prepared in formamide solvent. The material was characterized by Infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) Spectroscopy. The Cyclic Voltammogram (CV) the modified graphite paste electrode with NCuNP exhibits two redox couples with (Eθ,)1 = 0.29 and (E θ,)2 = 0.86 V attribute at Cu(I)/Cu (II) and Fe(II)(CN)5NO/Fe(III)(CN) 5NO processes, respectively (KCl = 1.0 mol L-1; v = 20 mV s-1). The redox couple with (Eθ,)2 presents an electrocatalytic response for sulfite. The modified graphite paste electrode gives a linear response of 7.0 × 10-4 to 3.0 × 10-2 mol L-1 (r = 0.998), for sulfite determination with Detection Limit (DL) of 1.76 × 10-3 mol L-1 and an amperometric sensitivity of 3.38 mA/mol L-1 and relative standard desviations ± 3% (n=3). ©The Electrochemical Society.

We have prepared heavy metal oxide glasses containing metallic copper nanoparticles with promising nonlinear optical properties which were determined by Z-scan and pump-probe measurements using femtosecond laser pulses. For the wavelengths within the plasmon band, we have observed saturable absorption and response times of 2.3 ps. For the other regions of the spectrum, reverse saturable absorption and lifetimes shorter than 200 fs were verified. The nonlinear refractive index is about 2.0 × 10-19 m2/W from visible to telecom region, thus presenting an enhancement effect at wavelengths near the plasmon and Cu+2 d-d band. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The chloropropyl silica gel was modified with octa(3-aminopropyl) octasilsesquioxane and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), spectroscopies, and surface and area porosity. The specific sorption capacity of metallic ions (Cu2+ and Ni2+) increases in the following solvent order: water < ethanol 42% < ethanol < ketone. The high values of the constant (K) in the order of 103 L mol-1 suggested the high adsorbent capacity of the modified silica (SGAPC) for Cu2+ and Ni2+. SGAPC was applied to a separation column and shows recoveries of around 100% of copper in samples of sugar cane spirit, vodka, ginger brandy, and ethanol fuel. © 2013 Devaney Ribeiro Do Carmo et al.
