Abstract The role and regulation of the pleiotropic cytokine erythropoietin (EPO) in skeletal muscle are controversial. EPO exerts its effects by binding its specific receptor (EPO-R), which activates intracellular signaling and gene transcription in response to internal and external stress signals. EPO is suggested to play a direct role in myogenesis via the EPO-R, but several studies have questioned the effect of EPO treatment in muscle in vitro and in vivo. The lack of certainty surrounding the use of nonspecific EPO-R antibodies contributes to the ambiguity of the field. Our study demonstrates that the EPO-R gene and protein are expressed at each stage of mouse C2C12 and human skeletal muscle cell proliferation and differentiation and validates a specific antibody for the detection of the EPO-R protein. However, in our experimental conditions, EPO treatment had no effect on mouse C2C12 and human muscle cell proliferation, differentiation, protein synthesis or EPO-R expression. While an increase in Akt and MAPK phosphorylation was observed, we demonstrate that this effect resulted from the stress caused by changing medium and not from EPO treatment. We therefore suggest that skeletal muscle EPO-R might be present in a nonfunctional form, or too lowly expressed to play a role in muscle cell function.

Racism toward Indigenous people remains a social problem in Australian culture, and racial abuse is part of that social problem. In this research, we investigated whether internal and external motivations, being open-minded, and having racist attitudes predicted the intention to engage in bystander action in support of Indigenous Australians in situations deemed low- and high-risk to personal safety. A total of 168 non-Indigenous community participants completed an anonymous online survey in Perth, Western Australia. In the low-risk scenario, low levels of racism, high internal motivation, and openness predicted the intention to engage in bystander action. In the high-risk scenario, participants with lower levels of racism and being female were more likely to engage in bystander action in support of Indigenous Australians. Coupled with previous research in the field, our findings suggest that internalized values relating to antiracist sentiments are significant predictors of antiracist bystander action.

BACKGROUND: Ecological models of health behaviour are an important conceptual framework to address the multiple correlates of obesity. Several single-country studies previously examined the relationship between the built environment and obesity in adults, but results are very diverse. An important reason for these mixed results is the limited variability in built environments in these single-country studies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine associations between perceived neighbourhood built environmental attributes and BMI/weight status in a multi-country study including 12 environmentally and culturally diverse countries. METHODS: A multi-site cross-sectional study was conducted in 17 cities (study sites) across 12 countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the UK and USA). Participants (n = 14222, 18-66 years) self-reported perceived neighbourhood environmental attributes. Height and weight were self-reported in eight countries, and measured in person in four countries. RESULTS: Three environmental attributes were associated with BMI or weight status in pooled data from 12 countries. Safety from traffic was the most robust correlate, suggesting that creating safe routes for walking/cycling by reducing the speed and volume of traffic might have a positive impact upon weight status/BMI across various geographical locations. Close proximity to several local destinations was associated with BMI across all countries, suggesting compact neighbourhoods with more places to walk related to lower BMI. Safety from crime showed a curvilinear relationship with BMI, with especially poor crime safety being related to higher BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Environmental interventions involving these three attributes appear to have international relevance and focusing on these might have implications for tackling overweight/obesity.

Game demands and training practices within team sports such as Australian football (AF) have changed considerably over recent decades, including the requirement of coaching staff to effectively control, manipulate and monitor training and competition loads. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the differences in external and internal physical load measures between game and training in elite junior AF. Twenty five male, adolescent players (mean ±SD: age 17.6 ± 0.5 y) recruited from three elite under 18 AF clubs participated. Global positioning system (GPS), heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) data were obtained from 32 game files during four games, and 84 training files during 19 training sessions. Matched-pairs statistics along with Cohen's d effect size and percent difference were used to compare game and training events. Players were exposed to a higher physical load in the game environment, for both external (GPS) and internal (HR, Session-RPE) load parameters, compared to in-season training. Session time (d = 1.23; percent difference = 31.4% (95% confidence intervals = 17.4 - 45.4)), total distance (3.5; 63.5% (17.4 - 45.4)), distance per minute (1.93; 33.0% (25.8 - 40.1)), high speed distance (2.24; 77.3% (60.3 - 94.2)), number of sprints (0.94; 43.6% (18.9 - 68.6)), mean HR (1.83; 14.3% (10.5 - 18.1)), minutes spent above 80% of predicted HRmax (2.65; 103.7% (89.9 - 117.6)) and Session-RPE (1.22; 48.1% (22.1 - 74.1)) were all higher in competition compared to training. While training should not be expected to fully replicate competition, the observed differences suggest that monitoring of physical load in both environments is warranted to allow comparisons and evaluate whether training objectives are being met. Key pointsPhysical loads, including intensity, are typically lower in training compared to competition in junior elite Australian football.Monitoring of player loads in team sports should include both internal and external measures.Selected training drills should look to replicate game intensities, however training is unlikely to match the overall physical demands of competition.

This chapter reports the results of a survey of Australian businesses currently doing business in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The main purpose of the survey was to gain a better understanding of the challenges which Australian businesses face when engaged in international business activities such as exporting, importing and investing in GCC countries. The research assesses how the removal of internal and external trade barriers would likely benefit businesses. The findings suggest that the main benefits are likely to accrue to export businesses while the effects on import and investment are likely to be minimal. Export revenues are likely to increase by an estimated 20% under the scenario where there is a free trade agreement (FTA) between Australia and GCC.

Burgeoning expectations of the sport industry’s role in managing the environmental impact on its community are increasing. While previous research has focused on factors contributing to environmental involvement, little is known about the organization’s approach in dealing with these responsibilities. An exploratory case evaluation of a Major League Baseball team in evaluating the constraints, demands and opportunities of managing environment issues is undertaken. Specifically, the Natural-Resource-Based View of the firm (NRBV) is used to frame the assessment of the team’s capabilities and strategies with consideration of internal and external dynamics. BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a modifiable behavior related to many preventable non-communicable diseases. There is an age-related decline in physical activity levels in young people, which tracks into adulthood. Common interactive technologies such as smartphones, particularly employing immersive features, may enhance the appeal and delivery of interventions to increase levels of physical activity in young people. The primary aim of the Apps for IMproving FITness (AIMFIT) trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of two popular "off-the-shelf" smartphone apps for improving cardiorespiratory fitness in young people.

METHODS/DESIGN: A three-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial will be conducted in Auckland, New Zealand. Fifty-one eligible young people aged 14-17 years will be randomized to one of three conditions: 1) use of an immersive smartphone app, 2) use of a non-immersive app, or 3) usual behavior (control). Both smartphone apps consist of an eight-week training program designed to improve fitness and ability to run 5 km, however, the immersive app features a game-themed design and adds a narrative. Data are collected at baseline and 8 weeks. The primary outcome is cardiorespiratory fitness, assessed as time to complete the one mile run/walk test at 8 weeks. Secondary outcomes are physical activity levels, self-efficacy, enjoyment, psychological need satisfaction, and acceptability and usability of the apps. Analysis using intention to treat principles will be performed using regression models.

DISCUSSION: Despite the proliferation of commercially available smartphone applications, there is a dearth of empirical evidence to support their effectiveness on the targeted health behavior. This pragmatic study will determine the effectiveness of two popular "off-the-shelf" apps as a stand-alone instrument for improving fitness and physical activity among young people. Adherence to app use will not be closely controlled; however, random allocation of participants, a heterogeneous group, and data analysis using intention to treat principles provide internal and external validity to the study. The primary outcome will be objectively assessed with a valid and reliable field-based test, as well as the secondary outcome of physical activity, via accelerometry. If effective, such applications could be used alongside existing interventions to promote fitness and physical activity in this population. Habitat fragmentation is thought to be an important process structuring landscapes in marine and estuarine environments, but effects on fauna are poorly understood, in part because of a focus on patchiness rather than fragmentation. Furthermore, despite concomitant increases in perimeter:area ratios with fragmentation, we have little understanding of how fauna change from patch edges to interiors during fragmentation. Densities of meiofauna were measured at different distances across the edges of four artificial seagrass treatments [continuous, fragmented, procedural control (to control for disturbance by fragmenting then restoring experimental plots), and patchy] 1 day, 1 week and 1 month after fragmentation. Experimental plots were established 1 week prior to fragmentation/disturbance. Samples were numerically dominated by harpacticoid copepods, densities of which were greater at the edge than 0.5 m into patches for continuous, procedural control and patchy treatments; densities were similar between the edge and 0.5 m in fragmented patches. For taxa that demonstrated edge effects, densities exhibited log-linear declines to 0.5 m into a patch with no differences observed between 0.5 m and 1 m into continuous treatments. In patchy treatments densities were similar at the internal and external edges for many taxa. The strong positive edge effect (higher densities at edge than interior) for taxa such as harpacticoid copepods implies some benefit of patchy landscapes. But the lack of edge effects during patch fragmentation itself demonstrates the importance of the mechanisms by which habitats become patchy.

Este trabalho avalia o grau de contribuição da implementação de um sistema de garantia da qualidade, em conformidade com as normas de garantia da qualidade (ISO 9001, 9002 e 9003), na competitividade das indústrias. Para o desenvolvimento do tema, discute-se inicialmente as normas da série ISO 9000, identificando-se sua origem, os objetivos, a aplicação e os requisitos existentes, bem como a forma e o impacto de sua implementação. Posteriormente, analisa-se a competitividade no sentido amplo, identificando-se os fatores determinantes da competitividade, tanto no nível interno como externo às empresas, definindo-se as estratégias genéricas de competição bem como as principais dimensões selecionadas para a obtenção do sucesso no curto, médio e longo prazos. A partir de então, analisa-se a forma como as normas ISO 9000 influenciam os fatores determinantes da competitividade, para posteriormente avaliar o impacto recaído sobre as principais dimensões de competição. O trabalho se encerra com o relato das conclusões sobre o tema proposto, obtidas a partir do confronto das observações colhidas ao longo do trabalho com os resultados de pesquisas existentes.

O desvelamento das racionalidades imersas nas ações docentes de uma escola de qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem, compõem a área temática deste estudo. No intuito de atingirmos esta dimensão de análise, abordamos as seguintes questões de pesquisa: - Qual o entendimento das docentes sobre o seu trabalho enquanto enfermeiras e professoras?; - Qual o entendimento das docentes sobre o trabalho e a qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem?; - Quais as ações que orientam a prática docente na qualificação profissional, como indicativos da(s) racionalidade(s)?; - Que dimensões estariam presentes na ação docente que possibilitariam uma ação comunicativa?. A teoria de Jürgen Habermas é utilizado como aporte para as idéias trabalhadas neste estudo. A Teoria da Ação Comunicativa, em sua proposta básica, centra-se nas dimensões de desvelamento ideológico de interesses, uso do conhecimento e da racionalidade na busca da emancipação e da autonomia. Esta teoria diferencia três tipos de racionalidades ou ações: instrumental, estratégica e comunicativa. Na coleta de dados é empregada entrevista semi-estruturada, cujas perguntas contemplam as questões acima delineadas, aplicadas à oito professores de uma escola escolhida intencionalmente. A análise de dados utiliza o método de análise de discurso conforme a Pragmática Formal apresentada por Habermas (1987), a qual se preocupa com as dimensões internas e externas dos atos de fala, nem sempre vinculados a questões gramaticais, valendo mais o significado e a consideração de falibilidade da verdade expressa (Habermas, 1987). A dimensão do trabalho das Professoras como categoria teórica, envolve a atividade docente e de enfermeira. No significado que possuem de trabalho, o mesmo é concebido como um agir-racional-com-respeito-a-afins, uma vez que é entendido como uma relação meio-fim. A divisão social e técnica do trabalho, bem como a fragmentação entre a concepção intelectual e manual, são apresentadas em situações distintas ao se referirem ao seu trabalho e ao das auxiliares de enfermagem. Nos seus atos de fala expressam o descontentamento em seguirem normas pré-estabelecidas, com a rotinização dos cuidados e a burocratização dos serviços. No entanto, reproduzem este sistema hierarquizado na relação com as auxiliares de enfermagem, articulando o seu poder como forma de manterem o controle sobre o produto do trabalho. No relacionamento com profissionais de 3º grau surge a hegemonia médica, assumindo as Professoras um posicionamento de submissão, justificado por não considerarem o cuidado de enfermagem como detentor de saber próprio, além do que o trabalho médico teria um conhecimento reconhecido; outras Professoras, em menor expressão, reconhecem a existência de hegemonia, posicionam-se frente a esses profissionais em uma relação de iguais, questionando-os. A qualificação profissional das auxiliares de enfermagem é trazida nos atos de fala em uma racionalidade instrumental, visando a formação técnico-científica. As ações docentes não trazem as bases de uma racionalidade comunicativa. No entanto, é realizado pela pesquisadora, a proposta de desenvolvimento desta realidade na qualificação profissional de auxiliares de enfermagem.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral verificar como uma empresa gerencia seus riscos trabalhistas com vistas a preveni-los. É um estudo de caso único, de natureza descritiva e qualitativa. Foi desenvolvido junto ao Grupo Eberle Mundial, através de entrevista do Gerente de Recursos Humanos, questionário auto-aplicado por sete membros do corpo executivo da organização, exame de documentos e análise de artigos de revistas e de jornais. Paralelamente, buscou experiências e opiniões de quatro especialistas da área trabalhista, também mediante questionário auto-aplicado. Em face dos resultados obtidos, o trabalho descreve a forma de gerenciamento de riscos trabalhistas adotada pelo Grupo Eberle Mundial e atende os objetivos específicos nos termos adiante sintetizados. Demonstra que o Grupo mantém rotinas para identificação de riscos trabalhistas, porém, não pratica a definição prévia do que sejam riscos relevantes e não relevantes. Identifica uma diversidade de riscos trabalhistas percebidos pelo Grupo e verifica que esses não abrangem riscos operacionais. Mostra que o Grupo criou métodos e instrumentos de trabalho próprios para o gerenciamento de seus riscos trabalhistas, atua de forma permanente na prevenção desses e faz a revisão anual de seus processos, buscando chegar à incorporação dessa filosofia à cultura da empresa, contudo, não mantém um sistema que integre seus procedimentos, na forma proposta pela literatura. Confirma que, através do projeto implantado pela nova administração, o Grupo que, em 1998, estava com sua sobrevivência comprometida, até 2003 já reduziu em mais de 50% as perdas financeiras que vinha sofrendo e restabeleceu sua credibilidade e imagem internas e externas. Constata que existe comprometimento da alta direção do Grupo com o gerenciamento de riscos trabalhistas, todavia, esse comprometimento não é do conhecimento de todos membros do corpo executivo da organização. Aponta que o Grupo não mantém área específica para gerenciamento de seus riscos trabalhistas, nem tem claro quem são os profissionais responsáveis por esses procedimentos.

O presente trabalho constitui o Relatório Final de um projeto de pesquisa financiado pelo Núcleo de Pesquisas e Publicações da FGV-EAESP. Analisam-se nele os Planos de Gestão de Resíduos de Serviços de Saúde PGRSS de uma amostra de 70 hospitais nacionais, elaborados em 2003, como resultado de um curso de educação a distância, ministrado por um consórcio formado entre a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina e a Fundação Getulio Vargas. O curso foi sugerido pela UNESCO e financiado por bancos internacionais, com intermediação do REFORSUS. Para cada Plano, foram tabulados, em planilha EXCEL, 164 itens, sendo 12 informações gerais sobre o hospital, 141 relativas à infra-estrutura e aos procedimentos atualmente usados e 11 referentes ao plano futuro de gestão de resíduos. Diagnosticou-se a situação desses hospitais no tocante ao manejo dos resíduos, classificados como infectantes, químicos, radioativos, comuns e perfurocortantes, desde a coleta, o armazenamento e o tratamento interno até a remoção, o tratamento externo e a disposição final. A água, desde a fonte de suprimento até seu consumo, os efluentes líquidos e as emissões gasosas também foram objeto de investigação. Foram avaliados ainda, sob os aspectos técnico e econômico, os planos elaborados pelos hospitais para a gestão futura dos seus resíduos. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam que os hospitais estudados se encontram em sua maioria numa fase incipiente em matéria de gestão dos seus resíduos, carecendo de infra-estrutura, recursos financeiros e humanos e gerenciamento, existindo considerável distância entre a gestão atual dos resíduos e as exigências legais que os hospitais devem cumprir nas áreas sanitária e ambiental.

O objetivo global dessa pesquisa foi contribuir com subsídios para o estudo sobre a qualidade de vida do jornalista diante das novas práticas político-econômicas e culturais, focalizando as problemáticas e sintomatologias de ordem psicológica na nova dinâmica da reestruturação produtiva. Nesse sentido, a investigação não considerou somente a incidência de problemáticas psíquicas; mas também relevou a realidade social, isto é, seus fatores internos e externos. Portanto, noções pertinentes às disciplinas da Psicologia que se interseccionam com a sociologia do trabalho fundamentaram a postura teórico-metodológica da pesquisa. O presente estudo teve como finalidade contribuir para a elucidação dessas relações, propiciando um aprofundamento na reflexão sobre a qualidade de vida desses profissionais que nos ajudam a formar, diariamente, a nossa opinião.

This study investigates in the National Commission of Nuclear Energy the Institute of Radiation Protection and Dosimetry in terms of perceptions, actions, and posture of the administrative agents which could facilitate the engagement of the employees of that public organization in the TQM implantation, based on NBR ISO 9000. The central question of this research is: which characteristics of the administrative actions and sense of the managerial posture manifested in the implantation, implementation and maintenance for the achievement of objectives and goals of the Quality System-ISO 9000, could contribute to engage the IRD professionals in the process? The research finds prevalence of the Quality technical knowledge over the attention on professionals' managerial posture, identifies a lack in that Norm about how to deal with its administrative requirements in practical terms, driving the researcher to look for support especially in Deming to face the critical reading of that organizational context. The field research was conceived under the paradigm of constructivism, facilitating the description of beliefs, perceptions, feelings and values manifested in the employees discourses, actions and re-actions to establish relations between Quality theory and that concrete reality. A phenomenologic approach, only as a complementary level, was sufficient to favor the researcher insertion in that institution where he is still working, but in the new and contingent role of researcher. To apprehend the organization managerial stile, to comprehend beyond its characteristics and to grasp the orientation of the managerial posture in terms of possibilities for Quality implementation were the core of this study. The TQM theory was interpreted as a living philosophy, an administrative posture the meaning of which is a permanent Quality improvement in the CNEN/IRD management processes in its internal and external organizational relations. The procedural nature of the CNEN/IRD public service legal regime, political implications and performance evaluation which reveals only partially the organizational reality should not obstruct the Institute drive to assume the spirit of serving the public as a Quality management philosophic commitment. Conclusions show some progress reorienting initiatives in organizational management taking place in three different levels: operational, toward the employees' expectations of values and organizational processes integration; HR administration, in search of better communication; strategic, through expectations on a possible visionary leadership". Finally, at the academic level, the perception that future studies in search of the establishment of relationships between TQM and the organization culture can favor new progress."

The purpose of this work, is to analyze the principles underlying the pulp and paper industry, here portrayed by Aracruz Celulose S A, in the marketing standpoint, as far as it concerns being in harmony with nature and adapting its relations with the stakeholders, notably regarding the community of the State of Espírito Santo. As they form, indeed, part of the same discussion, the goal is to proceed with a detailed examination of the major aspects and conditions involved, based in its corporate communications, leading to the construction of a positive corporate brand. The results found throughout this study show that despite Aracruz and the communities¿ different goals, they converge regarding their interests towards the best practices in social and environmental practices, and a more objective communication. Industry and community can work together for a same benefit: the best relations of man towards Nature, and of man towards man. The examples here stated will endorse our perception as well as serve to evaluate the results of the measures adopted in this relationship. It could be verified how internal and external aspects of the organization influence the company¿s reputation, leading to important changes in attitude and in the production process. Pressures from stakeholders have contributed largely in helping Aracruz become more conscious of the important role it plays in the social-environmental universe of the State of Espírito Santo. The assessment of leading the process of communications within in-depth transparency have signaled that, despite a closer approach with its stakeholders, Aracruz still needs to fulfill an existing gap: an excellent rapport between the company and the communities where it influences still needs to be pursued, especially regarding communicating its activities.
