Accurate knowledge of several Me-B (Me - Metal) phase diagrams are important to evaluate higher order systems such as Me-Si-B ternaries. This work presents results of microstructural characterization of as-cast Cr-B alloys which are significant to assess the liquid compositions associated to most of the invariant reactions of this system. Alloys of different compositions were prepared by arc melting pure Cr and B pressed powder mixtures under argon atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible with non-consumable tungsten electrode and titanium getter. The phases were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), using back-scattered electron (BSE) image mode and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In general, a good agreement was found between our data and those from the currently accepted Cr-B phase diagram. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This work presents results of microstructural characterization of as-cast Cr-Si alloys. The alloys were prepared by arc melting pure Cr (min. 99.996%) and Si (min. 99.998%) powder mixtures under argon atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible with nonconsumable tungsten electrode and titanium getter. The phases were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), using the back-scattered electron (BSE) image mode and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results confirm the currently accepted Cr-Si phase diagram in terms of the invariant reactions and solid phases present in this system. Small corrections are proposed for the compositions of the liquid phase in the following reactions: (i) L double left right arrow Cr-ss+Cr3Si, from 15 to 16 at.% Si; (ii) L+alpha Cr5Si3 double left right arrow CrSi, from 51 at.% Si to slightly above 53 at.% Si; (iii) L double left right arrow CrSi+CrSi2, from 56 to slightly above 57 at.% Si; (iv) L double left right arrow CrSi2+Si, from 82 to slightly above 85 at.% Si. Ti-rich Ti-Si-B alloys can be considered for structural applications at high temperatures (max. 700 degrees C), however, phase equilibria data is reported only for T = 1250 degrees C. Thus, in this work the phase stability of this system has been evaluated at 700 degrees C. In order to attain equilibrium conditions in shorter time, rapid solidified samples have been prepared and carefully characterized. The microstructural characterization of the produced materials were based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-BSE), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), High Temperature X-ray diffraction with Synchrotron radiation (XRDSR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Amorphous and amorphous with embedded nanocrystals have been observed after rapid solidification from specific alloy compositions. The values of the crystallization temperature (Tx) of the alloys were in the 509-647 degrees C temperature range. After Differential Scanning Calorimetry and High Temperature X-ray Diffraction with Synchrotron radiation, the alloys showed crystalline and basically formed by two or three of the following phases: alpha Ti, Ti(6)Si(2)B; Ti(5)Si(3); Ti(3)Si and TiB. It has been shown the stability of the Ti(3)Si and Ti(6)Si(2)B phases at 700 degrees C and the proposition of an isothermal section at this temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CoB, CO(2)B, CoSi, Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases can be formed during heat-treatment of amorphous co-Si-B soft magnetic materials. Thus, it is important to determine their magnetic behavior as a function of applied field and temperature. In this study, polycrystalline single-phase samples of the above phases were produced via arc melting and heat-treatment under argon. The single-phase nature of the samples was confirmed via X-ray diffraction experiments. AC and DC magnetization measurements showed that Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases are paramagnetic. Minor amounts of either Co(2)Si or CoSi(2) in the CoSi-phase sample suggested a paramagnetic behavior of the CoSi-phase, however, it should be diamagnetic as shown in the literature. The diamagnetic behavior of the CoB phase was also confirmed. The paramagnetic behavior of CO(5)Si(2)B is for the first time reported. The magnetization results of the phase CO(2)B have a ferromagnetic signature already verified on previous NMR studies. A detailed set of magnetization measurements of this phase showed a change of the easy magnetization axis starting at 70K, with a temperature interval of about 13K at a very small field of 1 mT. As the strength of the field is increased the temperature interval is enlarged. The strength of field at which the magnetization saturates increases almost linearly as the temperature is increased above 70K. The room temperature total magnetostriction of the CO(2)B phase was determined to be 8 ppm at a field of 1T. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermal expansion anisotropy of the V(5)Si(3) and T(2)-phase of the V-Si-B system were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffraction from 298 to 1273 K. Alloys with nominal compositions V(62.5)Si(37.5) (V5Si3 phase) and V(63)Si(12)B(25) (T(2)-phase) were prepared from high-purity materials through arc-melting followed by heat-treatment at 1873 K by 24 h, under argon atmosphere. The V(5)Si(3) phase exhibits thermal expansion anisotropy equals to 1.3, with thermal expansion coefficients along the a and c-axis equal to 9.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 11.7 x 10(-6) K(-1), respectively. Similarly, the thermal expansion anisotropy value of the T(2)-phase is 0.9 with thermal expansion coefficients equal to 8.8 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 8.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) along the, a and c-axis respectively. Compared to other isostructural silicides of the 5:3 type and the Ti(5)Si(3) phase, the V(5)Si(3) phase presents lower thermal expansion anisotropy. The T(2)-phase present in the V-Si-B system exhibits low thermal expansion anisotropy, as the T(2)-phase of the Mo-Si-B, Nb-Si-B and W-Si-B systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The wetting of Ti-Cu alloys on Si3N4 was analyzed by the sessile drop method, using an imaging system with a CCD camera during the heating under argon flow. The contact angle was measured as a function of temperature and time. The samples were cut transversally and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS). Wettability of the Ti-Cu alloy on Si3N4 is influenced by the reaction between the Ti and the ceramic. The TC1 and TC2 alloys presented low final contact angle values around 2 degrees and 26 degrees, respectively, indicating good wetting on Si3N4. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. BACKGROUND: The hydrolysis of hemicellulosic material can provide liquor with high xylose concentration (which can be used as a fermentation medium) and phenolic compounds (Phs), potentially immunostimulating compounds. However, these hydrolysates must be detoxified in order to remove the Phs that can act as inhibitors in bioconversions. RESULTS: Aqueous two-phase systems composed of thermoseparating copolymers were used for rice straw hydrolysate detoxification. The hydrolysis process was able to promote chemical breakdown of 85% of the total hemicellulose content, 14% of the cellulose, and 2% of the lignin. The hydrolysate obtained contained 19.7 g L-1 of xylose and several phenolic compounds, such as vanillin, vanillic acid, ferullic acid, etc. The phenolics extraction was studied as a function of copolymer molar mass (1100 g mol(-1), 2000 g mol(-1) and 2800 g mol(-1)), their percentages (from 5% to 50%) and Phs initial concentration. Phenolic compounds extraction of around 80% was obtained under the following conditions: 20% (w/w) and 35% (w/w) copolymer 1100 g mol-1, 35% (w/w) copolymer 2000 g mol(-1) and 35% (w/w) copolymer 2800 g mol(-1) at 25 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated the viability of this method for the removal of Phs from rice straw hydrolysate, which has potential uses in bioconversion processes. The crystallisation behaviour for alloys in the Al-rich corner in the Al-La-Ni system is reported in this paper Alloys were selected based on the topological instability criterion (lambda criterion) calculated from the alloy composition and metallic radii of the alloying elements and aluminum Amorphous ribbons were produced by melt-spinning and the crystallisation reactions were analysed by X-ray diffraction and calorimetry The results showed that increasing the values of lambda from 0.072 to 0.16 resulted in the following changes in the crystallisation behaviour, as predicted by the lambda criterion (a) nanocrystallisation of alpha-Al for the alloy composition corresponding to lambda = 0 072 and (b) detection of the glass transition temperature, T(g), for the alloys with composition close to lambda approximate to 0.1 line. For compositions corresponding to both ends of the lambda approximate to 0 1 line (near the binaries lines) T(g) could be detected only in the ""intermediary"" central region, and the alloy we produced in this region was considered the best glass former for the Al-rich corner Also, except for the alloys with the highest NI content, crystallisation proceeded by two distinct exothermic peaks which are typical of nanocrystallisation transformation. These behaviours are discussed in terms of compositional (lambda parameter) and topological aspects to account for cluster formation in the amorphous phase. The present study sought to identify the perception of a given group of users of the Brazilian Public Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude) regarding organ donation and to implement an educational policy. Structured interviews were conducted with the aim of describing the profile of donor and nondonor subjects, the importance of organ donation, and the knowledge regarding donation and brain death. One hundred subjects were interviewed: 33% of them considered themselves potential donors; 40% were donors; 13% were nondonors; and 14% were ill-informed potential donors. However, only 40% of users have already officially expressed to their families a willingness to donate. Regarding their knowledge about the propitious moment for organ donation, only 64% of them associated the donation act with brain death. Although the present results revealed that users of the Brazilian Public Health System are prone to organ donation, there actually was a high amount of refusals, which may be due to lack of information and knowledge regarding the donation-transplantation process.

Optical monitoring systems are necessary to manufacture multilayer thin-film optical filters with low tolerance on spectrum specification. Furthermore, to have better accuracy on the measurement of film thickness, direct monitoring is a must. Direct monitoring implies acquiring spectrum data from the optical component undergoing the film deposition itself, in real time. In making film depositions on surfaces of optical components, the high vacuum evaporator chamber is the most popular equipment. Inside the evaporator, at the top of the chamber, there is a metallic support with several holes where the optical components are assembled. This metallic support has rotary motion to promote film homogenization. To acquire a measurement of the spectrum of the film in deposition, it is necessary to pass a light beam through a glass witness undergoing the film deposition process, and collect a sample of the light beam using a spectrometer. As both the light beam and the light collector are stationary, a synchronization system is required to identify the moment at which the optical component passes through the light beam.

This paper presents a compact embedded fuzzy system for three-phase induction-motor scalar speed control. The control strategy consists in keeping constant the voltage-frequency ratio of the induction-motor supply source. A fuzzy-control system is built on a digital signal processor, which uses speed error and speed-error variation to change both the fundamental voltage amplitude and frequency of a sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation inverter. An alternative optimized method for embedded fuzzy-system design is also proposed. The controller performance, in relation to reference and load-torque variations, is evaluated by experimental results. A comparative analysis with conventional proportional-integral controller is also achieved.

A heuristic algorithm that employs fuzzy logic is proposed to the power system transmission expansion planning problem. The algorithm is based on the divide to conquer strategy, which is controlled by the fuzzy system. The algorithm provides high quality solutions with the use of fuzzy decision making, which is based on nondeterministic criteria to guide the search. The fuzzy system provides a self-adjusting mechanism that eliminates the manual adjustment of parameters to each system being solved. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Recent advances in energy technology generation and new directions in electricity regulation have made distributed generation (DG) more widespread, with consequent significant impacts on the operational characteristics of distribution networks. For this reason, new methods for identifying such impacts are needed, together with research and development of new tools and resources to maintain and facilitate continued expansion towards DG. This paper presents a study aimed at determining appropriate DG sites for distribution systems. The main considerations which determine DG sites are also presented, together with an account of the advantages gained from correct DG placement. The paper intends to define some quantitative and qualitative parameters evaluated by Digsilent (R), GARP3 (R) and DSA-GD software. A multi-objective approach based on the Bellman-Zadeh algorithm and fuzzy logic is used to determine appropriate DG sites. The study also aims to find acceptable DG locations both for distribution system feeders, as well as for nodes inside a given feeder. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The power loss reduction in distribution systems (DSs) is a nonlinear and multiobjective problem. Service restoration in DSs is even computationally hard since it additionally requires a solution in real-time. Both DS problems are computationally complex. For large-scale networks, the usual problem formulation has thousands of constraint equations. The node-depth encoding (NDE) enables a modeling of DSs problems that eliminates several constraint equations from the usual formulation, making the problem solution simpler. On the other hand, a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (EA) based on subpopulation tables adequately models several objectives and constraints, enabling a better exploration of the search space. The combination of the multiobjective EA with NDE (MEAN) results in the proposed approach for solving DSs problems for large-scale networks. Simulation results have shown the MEAN is able to find adequate restoration plans for a real DS with 3860 buses and 632 switches in a running time of 0.68 s. Moreover, the MEAN has shown a sublinear running time in function of the system size. Tests with networks ranging from 632 to 5166 switches indicate that the MEAN can find network configurations corresponding to a power loss reduction of 27.64% for very large networks requiring relatively low running time.

Two different fuzzy approaches to voltage control in electric power distribution systems are introduced in this paper. The real-time controller in each case would act on power transformers equipped with under-load tap changers. Learning systems are employed to turn the voltage-control relays into adaptive devices. The scope of this study has been limited to the power distribution substation, and the voltage measurements and control actions are carried out on the secondary bus. The capacity of fuzzy systems to handle approximate data, together with their unique ability to interpret qualitative information, make it possible to design voltage-control strategies that satisfy the requirements of the Brazilian regulatory bodies and the real concerns of the electric power distribution companies. Fuzzy control systems based on these two strategies have been implemented and the test results were highly satisfactory.
