Socioeconomic status, structural and functional measures of social support, and mortality: The British Whitehall II Cohort Study, 1985-2009.

The authors examined the associations of social support with socioeconomic status (SES) and with mortality, as well as how SES differences in social support might account for SES differences in mortality. Analyses were based on 9,333 participants from the British Whitehall II Study cohort, a longitudinal cohort established in 1985 among London-based civil servants who were 35-55 years of age at baseline. SES was assessed using participant's employment grades at baseline. Social support was assessed 3 times in the 24.4-year period during which participants were monitored for death. In men, marital status, and to a lesser extent network score (but not low perceived support or high negative aspects of close relationships), predicted both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Measures of social support were not associated with cancer mortality. Men in the lowest SES category had an increased risk of death compared with those in the highest category (for all-cause mortality, hazard ratio = 1.59, 95% confidence interval: 1.21, 2.08; for cardiovascular mortality, hazard ratio = 2.48, 95% confidence interval: 1.55, 3.92). Network score and marital status combined explained 27% (95% confidence interval: 14, 43) and 29% (95% confidence interval: 17, 52) of the associations between SES and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, respectively. In women, there was no consistent association between social support indicators and mortality. The present study suggests that in men, social isolation is not only an important risk factor for mortality but is also likely to contribute to differences in mortality by SES.

The HIA Forum provides an opportunity for those with an interest in HIA to meet, share experiences, hear about new developments and consider how to progress HIA. 2009 HIA Forum events focused on how HIA can and is being used to support healthier communties.

Health Impact Assessment Guidance (2009)

This document describes Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and the steps involved in HIA.  It gives advice based on the experience of HIA practitioners and provides tools to help carry out these steps and adapt HIA to local circumstances. This guidance manual explains what Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is and the stages involved in conducting it. It has been revised and updated based on the experience of HIA practitioners and includes new tools which have been developed to assist each step of the HIA process. It aims to provide a user friendly and practical framework to guide policy-makers and practitioners in undertaking HIA. IPH Manifesto for 2009 European Elections

The 2009 European Elections provide an opportunity to influence health at local and European Government level.  IPH has produced a short manifesto identifying 5 areas of action in public health for MEPs and political parties. The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) aims to improve health on the island of Ireland capitalising on benefits from North South cooperation. Our focus is tackling health inequalities and influencing public policies in favour of health.

Preeclampsia grave en una unidad de alto riesgo obstétrico: estudio retrospectivo en el área materno infantil del Hospital Vall de Hebron durante el año 2009

La preeclàmpsia greu és una malaltia multisistemàtica que es caracteritza per tenir presents alguns dels següents símptomes: PA ≥160 / 110, proteïnúria & 5 g/ 24 h, creatinina plasmàtica elevada, oligúria & 500 cc / 24 h, plaquetes & 100.000 /L, elevació de las transaminases, hemòlisis, dolor epigàstric o hipocondri dret, cefalea, alteracions visuals, mentals, edema agut de pulmó., Sd. Hellp, RCIU o oligoamnis; que apareixen durant l’embaràs. Els factors de risc més comuns entre les pacients estudiades a l’àrea matern infantil de l’ Hospital La Vall d´Hebron de Barcelona són la nuliparidat , l’obesitat i l’ edat &35 anys. Hi ha també uns altres factors menys freqüents com la HTA crònica i la gestació múltiple. En la majoria de les gestants es va seguir el protocol de l’ hipertensió arterial d’aquesta àrea. Totes van ser tractades amb sulfato de magnesi per a prevenir les convulsions i antihipertensiu. Sobre el 70% de les pacients va rebre també un tractament per a l’hipertensió amb labetalol e.v. i hidralacina e.v. Aquests fàrmacs són eficaços per al tractament de l’hipertensió en la preeclàmpsia severa. Es va comprovar que les pacients que van rebre el tractament amb hidralacina van presentar un major nombre de manifestacions clíniques i complicacions. L’anestèsia regional és el tipus d’anestèsia escollida. L’anestèsia intradural produeix el major descens de la TA en les pacients amb preeclàmpsia greu tractades amb anestèsia peridural Per altra banda, la cefalea és més freqüent desprès de l’anestèsia intradural que de l’epidural.

IPH response to Northern Ireland Utility Regulator's Social Action Plan 2009-2014

IPH welcomes the Regulator’s Social Action Plan as one of a range of policy measures needed to tackle escalating fuel poverty in Northern Ireland. The Social Action Plan relates to how energy suppliers and networks respond to the needs of vulnerable customers. The submission discusses the definition of vulnerable customers used by energy suppliers and calls for special consideration of householders with multiple vulnerabilities. IPH also calls for special attention to be paid to the development of appropriate social tarrifs and supports for debt management. Key messages •    The Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH) views this social action plan as a welcome contribution to the range of policy measures needed to tackle escalating fuel poverty in Northern Ireland. •    The activities and ethos of energy suppliers plays a significant role in alleviating fuel poverty and the threats posed to health when living in a cold, damp and energy inefficient home. •    IPH shares the view of the World Health Organisation that more evidence is needed to demonstrate the real impact of corporate social responsibility in the provision of goods and services vital to health and well-being, such as fuel and water.
