A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) powered using harvested energies is limited in its operation by instantaneous power. Since energy availability can be different across nodes in the network, network setup and collaboration is a non trivial task. At the same time, in the event of excess energy, exciting node collaboration possibilities exist; often not feasible with battery driven sensor networks. Operations such as sensing, computation, storage and communication are required to achieve the common goal for any sensor network. In this paper, we design and implement a smart application that uses a Decision Engine, and morphs itself into an energy matched application. The results are based on measurements using IRIS motes running on solar energy. We have done away with batteries; instead used low leakage super capacitors to store harvested energy. The Decision Engine utilizes two pieces of data to provide its recommendations. Firstly, a history based energy prediction model assists the engine with information about in-coming energy. The second input is the energy cost database for operations. The energy driven Decision Engine calculates the energy budgets and recommends the best possible set of operations. Under excess energy condition, the Decision Engine, promiscuously sniffs the neighborhood looking for all possible data from neighbors. This data includes neighbor's energy level and sensor data. Equipped with this data, nodes establish detailed data correlation and thus enhance collaboration such as filling up data gaps on behalf of nodes hibernating under low energy conditions. The results are encouraging. Node and network life time of the sensor nodes running the smart application is found to be significantly higher compared to the base application.

The present research describes the modeling of the thermodynamic properties of the liquid Al-Ga-In-As alloys at 1073 and 1173 K, and investigates the solid-liquid equilibria in the systems. The isothermal molar excess free energy function for the liquid alloys is represented in terms of 37 parameters pertaining to six of the constituent binaries, four ternaries and the quaternary interactions in the system. The corresponding solid alloys which consist of AlAs, GaAs and InAs are assumed to be quasi-regular ternary solutions. The solidus and liquidus compositions are calculated at 1073 and 1173 K using the derived values of the partial components for the solid and liquid alloys at equilibrium. They are in good agreement with those of the experimentally determined values available in the literature. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A systematic assessment of the submodels of conditional moment closure (CMC) formalism for the autoignition problem is carried out using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data. An initially non-premixed, n-heptane/air system, subjected to a three-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic, and decaying turbulence, is considered. Two kinetic schemes, (1) a one-step and (2) a reduced four-step reaction mechanism, are considered for chemistry An alternative formulation is developed for closure of the mean chemical source term

This paper considers the design and analysis of a filter at the receiver of a source coding system to mitigate the excess distortion caused due to channel errors. The index output by the source encoder is sent over a fading discrete binary symmetric channel and the possibly incorrect received index is mapped to the corresponding codeword by a Vector Quantization (VQ) decoder at the receiver. The output of the VQ decoder is then processed by a receive filter to obtain an estimate of the source instantiation. The distortion performance is analyzed for weighted mean square error (WMSE) and the optimum receive filter that minimizes the expected distortion is derived for two different cases of fading. It is shown that the performance of the system with the receive filter is strictly better than that of a conventional VQ and the difference becomes more significant as the number of bits transmitted increases. Theoretical expressions for an upper and lower bound on the WMSE performance of the system with the receive filter and a Rayleigh flat fading channel are derived. The design of a receive filter in the presence of channel mismatch is also studied and it is shown that a minimax solution is the one obtained by designing the receive filter for the worst possible channel. Simulation results are presented to validate the theoretical expressions and illustrate the benefits of receive filtering.

Strategies for efficient start-up of a continuous process for biooxidation of refractory gold ore and concentrate obtained from Hutti, Gold Mines Limited (HGML), India are discussed in this work. The biooxidation of the concentrate at high pulp density (10%) with wild strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans isolated from HGML mines is characterized by significant lag phase (20 days) and incomplete oxidation (35%) even after prolonged operation (60 days). Two strategies, biooxidation with concentrate adapted cells and a step leaching strategy, in which the pulp density is progressively increased from 2% to 10% were considered and the latter resulted in efficient biooxidation of concentrate. Conversion of such a process from batch to continuous operation is shown to result in complete biooxidation of the concentrate and gold extraction efficiency in excess of 90%. This paper presents computational and experimental results on a new burner configuration with a mild combustion concept with heat release rates up to 10 MW/m(3). The burner configuration is shown to achieve mild combustion by using air at ambient temperature at high recirculation rates (similar to250%-290%) both experimentally and computationally. The principal features of the configuration are: (1) a burner with forward exit for exhaust gases; (2) injection of gaseous fuel and air as multiple, alternate, peripheral highspeed jets at the bottom at ambient temperature, thus creating high enough recirculation rates of the hot combustion products into fresh incoming reactants; and (3) use of a suitable geometric artifice-a frustum of a cone to help recirculation. The computational studies have been used to reveal the details of the flow and to optimize the combustor geometry based on recirculation rates. Measures, involving root mean square temperature fluctuations, distribution of temperature and oxidizer concentration inside the proposed burner, and a classical turbulent diffusion jet flame, are used to distinguish between them quantitatively. The system, operated at heat release rates of 2 to 10 MW/m(3) (compared to 0.02 to 0.32 MW/m(3) in the earlier studies), shows a 10-15 dB reduction in noise in the mild combustion mode compared to a simple open-top burner and exhaust NOx emission below 10 ppm for a 3 kW burner with 10% excess air. The peak temperature is measured around 1750 K, approximately 300 K lower than the peak temperature in a conventional burner.

A method for the preparation of acicular hydrogoethite (alpha -FeOOH.xH(2)O, 0.1 < x < 0.22) particles of 0.3-1 mm length has been optimized by air oxidation of Fe( II) hydroxide gel precipitated from aqueous (NH4)(2)Fe(SO4)(2) solutions containing 0.005-0.02 atom% of cationic Pt, Pd or Rh additives as morphology controlling agents. Hydrogoethite particles are evolved from the amorphous ferrous hydroxide gel by heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Preferential adsorption of additives on certain crystallographic planes thereby retarding the growth in the perpendicular direction, allows the particles to acquire acicular shapes with high aspect ratios of 8-15. Synthetic hydrogoethite showed a mass loss of about 14% at similar to 280 degreesC, revealing the presence of strongly coordinated water of hydration in the interior of the goethite crystallites. As evident from IR spectra, excess H2O molecules (0.1- 0.22 per formula unit) are located in the strands of channels formed in between the double ribbons of FeO6 octahedra running parallel to the c- axis. Hydrogoethite particles constituted of multicrystallites are formed with Pt as additive, whereas single crystallite particles are obtained with Pd (or Rh). For both dehydroxylation as well as H-2 reduction, a lower reaction temperature (similar to 220 degreesC) was observed for the former (Pt treated) compared to the latter (Pd or Rh) (similar to 260 degreesC). Acicular magnetite (Fe3O4) was prepared either by reducing hydrogoethite (magnetite route) or dehydroxylating hydrogoethite to hematite and then reducing it to magnetite (hematite- magnetite route). According to TEM studies, preferential dehydroxylation of hydrogoethite along < 010 > leads to microporous hematite. Maghemite (gamma -Fe2O3 (-) (delta), 0 <

The design and synthesis of agents that can abstract zinc from their [CCXX] (C=cysteine; X=cysteine/histidine) boxes by thioldisulfide exchange-having as control, the redox parities of the core sulfur ligands of the reagent and the enzyme, has been illustrated, and their efficiency demonstrated by monitoring the inhibition of the transcription of calf thymus DNA by E. coli RNA polymerase, which harbors two zinc atoms in their [CCXX] boxes of which one is exchangeable. Maximum inhibition possible with removal of the exchangeable zinc was seen with redox-sulfanilamide-glutamate composite. In sharp contrast, normal chelating agents (EDTA, phenanthroline) even in a thousand fold excess showed only marginal inhibition, thus supporting an exchange mechanism for the metal removal. An improved Monte Carlo technique is presented in this work to simulate nanoparticle formation through a micellar route. The technique builds on the simulation technique proposed by Bandyopadhyaya et al. (Langmuir 2000, 16, 7139) which is general and rigorous but at the same time very computation intensive, so much so that nanoparticle formation in low occupancy systems cannot be simulated in reasonable time. In view of this, several strategies, rationalized by simple mathematical analyses, are proposed to accelerate Monte Carlo simulations. These are elimination of infructuous events, removal of excess reactant postreaction, and use of smaller micelle population a large number of times. Infructuous events include collision of an empty micelle with another empty one or with another one containing only one molecule or only a solid particle. These strategies are incorporated in a new simulation technique which divides the entire micelle population in four classes and shifts micelles from one class to other as the simulation proceeds. The simulation results, throughly tested using chi-square and other tests, show that the predictions of the improved technique remain unchanged, but with more than an order of magnitude decrease in computational effort for some of the simulations reported in the literature. A post priori validation scheme for the correctness of the simulation results has been utilized to propose a new simulation strategy to arrive at converged simulation results with near minimum computational effort.

The occurrence of segregation and its influence on microstructural and phase evolution have been studied in MgO–MgAl2O4 powders synthesized by thermal decomposition of aqueous nitrate precursors. When the nitrate solutions of Mg and Al were spray-pyrolyzed on a substrate held at 673 or 573 K, homogeneous mixed oxides were produced. Spraying and drying the nitrate solutions at 473 K resulted in the formation of compositionally inhomogeneous, segregated oxide mixtures. It is suggested that segregation in the dried powders was caused by the difference in solubility of the individual nitrate salts in water which caused Mg-rich and Al-rich salts to precipitate during dehydration of the solutions. The occurrence of segregation in the powders sprayed at 473 K and not 573 or 673 K is ascribed to the sluggish rate at which the early stages of decomposition occurred during which the cations segregated. The phase evolution in segregated and segregation-free MgO–MgAl2O4 powders has been compared. The distinguishing feature of the segregated powders was the appearance of stoichiometric periclase grain dimensions in excess of 0.3 μm at temperatures as low as 973 K. By comparison, the segregation-free powders displayed broad diffraction peaks corresponding to fine-grained and nonstoichiometric periclase. The grain size was in the range 5–30 nm at temperatures up to 1173 K. The key to obtaining fine-grained periclase was the ability to synthesize (Mg Al)O solid solutions with the rock salt structure. In the temperature range 973–1173 K, spinel grain size varied from 5 to 40 nm irrespective of its composition and did not appear to be influenced by segregation.

The stability of a Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 bulk metallic glass (BMG) against structural relaxation is investigated by isothermal and isochronal annealing heat treatments below and above its glass transition temperature, Tg, for varying periods. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the annealed samples shows an excess endotherm at Tg, irrespective of the annealing temperature. This recovery peak evolves exponentially with annealing time and is due to the destruction of anneal-induced compositional short range ordering. The alloy exhibits a high resistance to crystallization on annealing below Tg and complex Pd- and Ni-phosphides evolve on annealing above Tg.

We study odd-membered chains of spin-1/2 impurities, with each end connected to its own metallic lead. For antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, universal two-channel Kondo (2CK) physics is shown to arise at low energies. Two overscreening mechanisms are found to occur depending on coupling strength, with distinct signatures in physical properties. For strong interimpurity coupling, a residual chain spin-1/2 moment experiences a renormalized effective coupling to the leads, while in the weak-coupling regime, Kondo coupling is mediated via incipient single-channel Kondo singlet formation. We also investigate models in which the leads are tunnel-coupled to the impurity chain, permitting variable dot filling under applied gate voltages. Effective low-energy models for each regime of filling are derived, and for even fillings where the chain ground state is a spin singlet, an orbital 2CK effect is found to be operative. Provided mirror symmetry is preserved, 2CK physics is shown to be wholly robust to variable dot filling; in particular, the single-particle spectrum at the Fermi level, and hence the low-temperature zero-bias conductance, is always pinned to half-unitarity. We derive a Friedel-Luttinger sum rule and from it show that, in contrast to a Fermi liquid, the Luttinger integral is nonzero and determined solely by the ``excess'' dot charge as controlled by gate voltage. The relevance of the work to real quantum dot devices, where interlead charge-transfer processes fatal to 2CK physics are present, is also discussed. Physical arguments and numerical renormalization-group techniques are used to obtain a detailed understanding of these problems.

SrTiO3:Pr3+,Al3+ phosphor samples with varying ratios of Sr/Ti/Al were prepared by the gel-carbonate method and the mechanism of enhancement of the red photoluminescence intensity therein was investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of SrTiO3:Pr3+ show both D-1(2) --> H-3(4) and P-3(0) --> H-3(4) emission in the red and blue spectral regions, respectively, with comparable intensity. The emission intensity of D-1(2) --> H-3(4) is drastically enhanced by the incorporation of Al3+ and excess Ti4+ in the compositional range Sr(Ti,Al-y)(O3+3y/2):Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.4) and SrTi1+xAlyO3+z:Pr3+ (0.2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5; 0.05 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 0.1; z = 2x + 3y/2) with the complete disappearance of the blue band. This cannot be explained by the simple point defect model as the EPR studies do not show any evidence for the presence of electron or hole centers. TEM investigations show the presence of exsolved nanophases of SrAl12O19 and/or TiO2 in the grain boundary region as well as grain interiors as lamellae which, in turn, form the solid-state defects, namely, dislocation networks, stacking faults and crystallographic shear planes whereby the framework of corner shared TiO6 octehedra changes over to edge-sharing TiO5-AlO5 strands as indicated from the Al-27 MAS NMR studies. The presence of transitional nanophases and the associated defects modify the excitation-emission processes by way of formation of electronic sub-levels at 3.40 and 4.43 eV, leading to magnetic-dipole related red emission with enhanced intensity. This is evidenced by the fact that SrAl12O19:Pr3+,Ti4+ shows bright red emission whereas SrAl12O19:Pr3+ does not show red photoluminescence.

Plant organs are initiated as primordial outgrowths, and require controlled cell division and differentiation to achieve their final size and shape. Superimposed on this is another developmental program that orchestrates the switch from vegetative to reproductive to senescence stages in the life cycle. These require sequential function of heterochronic regulators. Little is known regarding the coordination between organ and organismal growth in plants. The TCP gene family encodes transcription factors that control diverse developmental traits, and a subgroup of class II TCP genes regulate leaf morphogenesis. Absence of these genes results in large, crinkly leaves due to excess division, mainly at margins. It has been suggested that these class II TCPs modulate the spatio-temporal control of differentiation in a growing leaf, rather than regulating cell proliferation per se. However, the link between class II TCP action and cell growth has not been established. As loss-of-function mutants of individual TCP genes in Arabidopsis are not very informative due to gene redundancy, we generated a transgenic line that expressed a hyper-activated form of TCP4 in its endogenous expression domain. This resulted in premature onset of maturation and decreased cell proliferation, leading to much smaller leaves, with cup-shaped lamina in extreme cases. Further, the transgenic line initiated leaves faster than wild-type and underwent precocious reproductive maturation due to a shortened adult vegetative phase. Early senescence and severe fertility defects were also observed. Thus, hyper-activation of TCP4 revealed its role in determining the timing of crucial developmental events, both at the organ and organism level.
