Two models with SU(3)C ⊗ SU(3)L U(1)N gauge symmetry are considered. We show that the masslessness of the photon does not prevent the neutrinos from acquiring Majorana masses. That is, there is no relation between the VEVs of Higgs fields and the electromagnetic gauge invariance contrary to what has been claimed recently. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A self-learning simulated annealing algorithm is developed by combining the characteristics of simulated annealing and domain elimination methods. The algorithm is validated by using a standard mathematical function and by optimizing the end region of a practical power transformer. The numerical results show that the CPU time required by the proposed method is about one third of that using conventional simulated annealing algorithm.

One of the key issues which makes the waveletGalerkin method unsuitable for solving general electromagnetic problems is a lack of exact representations of the connection coefficients. This paper presents the mathematical formulae and computer procedures for computing some common connection coefficients. The characteristic of the present formulae and procedures is that the arbitrary point values of the connection coefficients, rather than the dyadic point values, can be determined. A numerical example is also given to demonstrate the feasibility of using the wavelet-Galerkin method to solve engineering field problems. © 2000 IEEE.

Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of the cavity configuration factor ("C-Factor") and light activation technique on polymerization contraction forces of a Bis-GMA-based composite resin (Charisma, Heraeus Kulzer). Material and Methods: Three different pairs of steel moving bases were connected to a universal testing machine (Emic DL 500): groups A and B - 2x2 mm (CF=0.33), groups C and D - 3x2 mm (CF=0.66), groups E and F - 6x2 mm (CF=1.5). After adjustment of the height between the pair of bases so that the resin had a volume of 12 mm(3) in all groups, the material was inserted and polymerized by two different methods: pulse delay (100 mW/cm(2) for 5 s, 40 s interval, 600 mW/cm(2) for 20 s) and continuous pulse (600 mW/cm(2) for 20 s). Each configuration was light cured with both techniques. Tensions generated during polymerization were recorded by 120 s. The values were expressed in curves (Force(N) x Time(s)) and averages compared by statistical analysis (ANOVA and Tukey's test, p<0.05). Results: For the 2x2 and 3x2 bases, with a reduced C-Factor, significant differences were found between the light curing methods. For 6x2 base, with high C-Factor, the light curing method did not influence the contraction forces of the composite resin. Conclusions: Pulse delay technique can determine less stress on tooth/restoration interface of adhesive restorations only when a reduced C-Factor is present.

Twelve participants ran (9 km . h(-1)) to test two types of running shoes: replica and original shoes. Ground reaction force, plantar pressure and electromyographic activity were recorded. The shoes were tested randomly and on different days. Comparisons between the two experimental conditions were made by analysis of variance (ANOVA) test (P <= 0.05). The time to first peak, loading rate of the first peak and impulse of the first 75 ms of stance were significantly different between the shoes (P <= 0.05), revealing an increase of impact forces for the replica shoes. The peak plantar pressure values were significantly higher (P <= 0.05) when wearing replica shoes. During running, the contact area was significantly smaller (P <= 0.05) for the replica shoe. The electromyographic activity of the analysed muscles did not show changes between the two shoes in running. These findings suggest that the use of replica running shoes can increase the external load applied to the human body, but may not change the muscle activity pattern during locomotion. This new mechanical situation may increase the risk of injuries in these movements.

An exact expression is derived for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within a magneto-dielectric coated sphere, which is irradiated by a plane and time-harmonic electromagnetic wave. Both the spherical shell and core are considered to be dispersive and lossy, with a realistic dispersion relation of an isotropic split-ring resonator metamaterial. We obtain analytical expressions for the stored electromagnetic energies inside the core and the shell separately and calculate their contributions to the total average energy density. The stored electromagnetic energy is calculated for two situations involving a metamaterial coated sphere: a dielectric shell and dispersive metamaterial core, and vice versa. An explicit relation between the stored energy and the optical absorption efficiency is also obtained. We show that the stored electromagnetic energy is an observable sensitive to field interferences responsible for the Fano effect. This result, together with the fact that the Fano effect is more likely to occur in metamaterials with negative refraction, suggest that our findings may be explored in applications.

Unstable shoes have been designed to promote "natural instability" and during walking they should simulate barefoot gait, enhancing muscle activity and, thus, attributing an advantage over regular tennis shoes. Recent studies showed that, after special training on the appropriate walking pattern, the use of the Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT) shoe increases muscle activation during walking. Our study presents a comparison of muscle activity as well as horizontal and vertical forces during gait with the MBT, a standard tennis shoe and barefoot walking of healthy individuals without previous training. These variables were compared in 25 female subjects and gait conditions were compared using ANOVA repeated measures (effect size:0.25). Walking with the MBT shoe in this non-instructed condition produced higher vertical forces (first vertical peak and weight acceptance rate) than walking with a standard shoe or walking barefoot, which suggests an increase in the loads received by the musculoskeletal system, especially at heel strike. Walking with the MBT shoe did not increase muscle activity when compared to walking with the standard shoe. The barefoot condition was more effective than the MBT shoe at enhancing muscle activation. Therefore, in healthy individuals, no advantage was found in using the MBT over a standard tennis shoe without a special training period. Further studies using the MBT without any instruction over a longer period are needed to evaluate if the higher loads observed in the present study would return to their baseline values after a period of adaptation, and if the muscle activity would increase over time. Background: Accelerating bone healing around dental implants can reduce the long-term period between the insertion of implants and functional rehabilitation. Objective: This in vivo study evaluated the effect of a constant electromagnetic field (CEF) on bone healing around dental implants in dogs. Materials and methods: Eight dental implants were placed immediately after extraction of the first premolar and molar teeth on the mandible of two male dogs and divided into experimental (CEF) and control groups. A CEF at magnetic intensity of 0.8 mT with a pulse width of 25 mu s and frequency of 1.5 MHz was applied on the implants for 20 min per day for 2 weeks. Result and conclusion: After qualitative histological analysis, a small quantity of newly formed bone was observed in the gap between the implant surface and alveolar bone in both groups.

The structure of additional electromagnetic fields to the Aharonov-Bohm field, for which the Schrodinger, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations can be solved exactly are described and the corresponding exact solutions are found. It is demonstrated that aside from the known cases (a constant and uniform magnetic field that is parallel to the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid, a static spherically symmetrical electric field, and the field of a magnetic monopole), there are broad classes of additional fields. Among these new additional fields we have physically interesting electric fields acting during a finite time or localized in a restricted region of space. There are additional time-dependent uniform and isotropic electric fields that allow exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation. In the relativistic case there are additional electric fields propagating along the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid with arbitrary electric pulse shape. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. This paper presents a method for electromagnetic torque ripple and copper losses reduction in (non-sinusoidal or trapezoidal) surface-mount permanent magnet synchronous machines (SM-PMSM). The method is based on an extension of classical dq transformation that makes it possible to write a vectorial model for this kind of machine (with a non-sinusoidal back-EMF waveform). This model is obtained by the application of that transformation in the classical machine per-phase model. That transformation can be applied to machines that have any type of back-EMF waveform, and not only trapezoidal or square-wave back-EMF waveforms. Implementation results are shown for an electrical converter, using the proposed vectorial model, feeding a non-sinusoidal synchronous machine (brushless DC motor). They show that the use of this vectorial mode is a way to achieve improvements in the performance of this kind of machine, considering the electromagnetic torque ripple and copper losses, if compared to a drive system that employs a classical six-step mode as a converter. We describe the system of massive Weyl fields propagating in a background matter and interacting with an external electromagnetic field. The interaction with an electromagnetic field is due to the presence of anomalous magnetic moments. To canonically quantize this system first we develop the classical field theory treatment of Weyl spinors in frames of the Hamilton formalism which accounts for the external fields. Then, on the basis of the exact solution of the wave equation for a massive Weyl field in a background matter we obtain the effective Hamiltonian for the description of spin-flavor oscillations of Majorana neutrinos in matter and a magnetic field. Finally, we incorporate in our analysis the neutrino self-interaction which is essential when the neutrino density is sufficiently high. We also discuss the applicability of our results for the studies of collective effects in spin-flavor oscillations of supernova neutrinos in a dense matter and a strong magnetic field. We report on the measurements of both vertical and lateral levitation forces between a permanent magnet NdFeB and a polycrystalline YBa4Cu6O7-delta superconductor. The analysis of the obtained results revealed an interesting correlation between the behavior of the forces in the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled regimes, resembling the structure of the so-called susceptibility spectrum chi ''(chi'). Such force-force diagrams can be useful for identifying flux distribution structure inside a superconducting material. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4743006]

Background: The reduction of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) strength is a major cause of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Objective: To compare active and passive forces, and vaginal cavity aperture in continent and stress urinary incontinent women. Method: The study included a total of thirty-two women, sixteen continent women (group 1 - G1) and sixteen women with SUI (group 2 - G2). To evaluate PFM passive and active forces in anteroposterior (sagittal plane) and left-right directions (frontal plane) a stainless steel specular dynamometer was used. Results: The anteroposterior active strength for the continent women (mean +/- standard deviation) (0.3 +/- 0.2 N) was greater compared to the values found in the evaluation of incontinent women (0.1 +/- 0.1 N). The left-right active strength (G1=0.43 +/- 0.1 N; G2=0.40 +/- 0.1 N), the passive force (G1=1.1 +/- 0.2 N; G2=1.1 +/- 0.3 N) and the vaginal cavity aperture (G1=21 +/- 3 mm; G2=24 +/- 4 mm) did not differ between groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: The function evaluation of PFM showed that women with SUI had a lower anteroposterior active strength compared to continent women.

The first measurement of neutron emission in electromagnetic dissociation of Pb-208 nuclei at the LHC is presented. The measurement is performed using the neutron zero degree calorimeters of the ALICE experiment, which detect neutral particles close to beam rapidity. The measured cross sections of single and mutual electromagnetic dissociation of Pb nuclei at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV with neutron emission are sigma(singleEMD) = 187.4 +/- 0.2(stat)(-11.2)(+13.2) (syst) b and sigma(mutualEMD) = 5. 7 +/- 0.1(stat) +/- 0.4(syst) b, respectively. The experimental results are compared to the predictions from a relativistic electromagnetic dissociation model. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.109.252302
