The kiwi is a fruit that, has only been in Europe for about 60 years, which signifies a great potential for the development of its consumption and great difficulty in the educational process of the product. Currently there is a growing increase in world production, which to date is above the growth in demand. This means that the kiwi categories are not growing significantly and, on the contrary, the kiwi is at a crossroad that will be resolved in the coming years. The changing global economic scenario affects high-value products such as kiwis, making it hard to predict their commercial results. The worldwide market has clearly indicated through the demand and the prices that it is interested in the sweeter yellow varieties. Asian markets have been and are expected to continue to grow. The increase in world production has also generated overlap in stocks between the hemispheres, which makes it necessary to closely monitor commercial strategies regarding the start and end of the season. In this way, the market entry of the southern hemisphere kiwifruit is conditioned according to the presence of fruit from the Northern Hemisphere. The unique features and uses of the kiwi make it one of the most interesting fruits present in the world. For this reason it is also a fruit with high purchase value. In spite of the described variables and market trends, there is a growing demand for consuming better quality kiwis and willingness to pay a higher price.

-- Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a technique of choice for analyzing spray paint speciments (i.e. traces) and reference samples (i.e. cans seized from suspects) due to its high discriminating power, sensitivity and sampling possibilities. The comparison of the spectra is currently carried out visually, but this procedure has limitations such as the subjectivity in the decision due to its dependency on the experience and training of the expert. This implies that small differences in the relative intensity of two peaks can be perceived differently by experts, even between analysts working in the same laboratory. When it comes to justifying these differences, some will explain them by the analytical technique, while others will estimate that the observed differences are mostly due to an intrinsic variability from the paint sample and/or its acquired characteristics (for example homogeneity, spraying, or degradation). This work proposes to statistically study the different sources of variability observed in infrared spectra, to identify them, understand them and try to minimize them. The second goal is to propose a procedure for spectra comparison that is more transparent, and allows obtaining reproducible answers being independent from the expert. The first part of the manuscript focuses on the optimization of infrared measurement and on the main analytical parameters. The necessary conditions to obtain reproducible spectra with a minimized variation within a sample (intra-variability) are presented. Following that a procedure of spectral correction is then proposed using pretreatments and variable selection methods, in order to minimize systematic and random errors, and increase simultaneously relevant chemical information. The second part presents a market study of 74 spray paints representative of the Swiss market. The discrimination capabilities of FTIR at the brand and model level are evaluated by means of visual and statistical procedures. The inferior limits of discrimination are tested on paints coming from the same brand and model, but from different production batches. The results showed that the pigment composition was particularly discriminatory, because of the corrections and adjustments made to the paint color during its manufacturing process. The features associated with spray paint traces (graffitis, droplets) were also tested. Three elements were identified and their influence on the resulting infrared spectra were tested: 1) the minimum shaking time necessary to obtain a sufficient homogeneity of the paint and subsequently of the painted surface, 2) the degradation initiated by ultraviolet radiation in an exterior environment, and 3) the contamination from the support when paint is recovered. Finally a population study was performed on 35 graffitis coming from the city of Lausanne and surroundings areas, and the results were compared to the previous market study of spray cans. The last part concentrated on the decision process during the pairwise comparison of spectra. First, an understanding of the actual practice among laboratories was initiated by submitting a questionnaire. Then, a proposition for a statistical method of comparison was advanced to improve the objectivity and transparency during the decision process. A method of comparison based on the correlation between spectra is proposed, followed by the integration into a Bayesian framework at both source and activity levels. Finally, some case examples are presented and the recommended methodology is discussed in order to define the role of the expert as well as the contribution of the tested statistical approach within a global analytical sequence for paint examinations.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes represents an increasing health burden worldwide. In 2010, the Public Health Department of the canton of Vaud (Switzerland) launched a regional diabetes programme entitled "Programme cantonal Diabète" (PcD), with the objectives to both decrease the incidence of diabetes and improve care for patients with diabetes. The cohort entitled CoDiab-VD emerged from that programme. It specifically aimed at following quality of diabetes care over time, at evaluating the coverage of the PcD within this canton and at assessing the impact of the PcD on care of patients with diabetes. METHODS/DESIGN: The cohort CoDiab-VD is a prospective population-based cohort study. Patients with diabetes were recruited in two waves (autumn 2011--summer 2012) through community pharmacies. Eligible participants were non-institutionalised adult patients (≥ 18 years) with diabetes diagnosed for at least one year, residing in the canton of Vaud and coming to a participating pharmacy with a diabetes-related prescription. Women with gestational diabetes, people with obvious cognitive impairment or insufficient command of French were not eligible. Self-reported data collected, included the following primary outcomes: processes-of-care indicators (annual checks) and outcomes of care such as HbA1C, (health-related) quality of life measures (Short Form-12 Health Survey--SF-12, Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life 19--ADDQoL) and Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC). Data on diabetes, health status, healthcare utilisation, health behaviour, self-management activities and support, knowledge of, or participation to, campaigns/activities proposed by the PcD, and socio-demographics were also obtained. For consenting participants, physicians provided few additional pieces of information about processes and laboratory results. Participants will be followed once a year, via a mailed self-report questionnaire. The core of the follow-up questionnaires will be similar to the baseline one, with the addition of thematic modules adapting to the development of the PcD. Physicians will be contacted every 2 years. DISCUSSION: CoDiab-VD will allow obtaining a broad picture of the care of patients with diabetes, as well as their needs regarding their chronic condition. The data will be used to evaluate the PcD and help prioritise targeted actions. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT01902043, July 9, 2013.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic cardiovascular disease that involves the thicken¬ing of the artery walls as well as the formation of plaques (lesions) causing the narrowing of the lumens, in vessels such as the aorta, the coronary and the carotid arteries. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising modality for the assessment of atherosclerosis, as it is a non-invasive and patient-friendly procedure that does not use ionizing radiation. MRI offers high soft tissue con¬trast already without the need of intravenous contrast media; while modifica¬tion of the MR pulse sequences allows for further adjustment of the contrast for specific diagnostic needs. As such, MRI can create angiographic images of the vessel lumens to assess stenoses at the late stage of the disease, as well as blood flow-suppressed images for the early investigation of the vessel wall and the characterization of the atherosclerotic plaques. However, despite the great technical progress that occurred over the past two decades, MRI is intrinsically a low sensitive technique and some limitations still exist in terms of accuracy and performance. A major challenge for coronary artery imaging is respiratory motion. State- of-the-art diaphragmatic navigators rely on an indirect measure of motion, per¬form a ID correction, and have long and unpredictable scan time. In response, self-navigation (SM) strategies have recently been introduced that offer 100% scan efficiency and increased ease of use. SN detects respiratory motion di¬rectly from the image data obtained at the level of the heart, and retrospectively corrects the same data before final image reconstruction. Thus, SN holds po-tential for multi-dimensional motion compensation. To this regard, this thesis presents novel SN methods that estimate 2D and 3D motion parameters from aliased sub-images that are obtained from the same raw data composing the final image. Combination of all corrected sub-images produces a final image with reduced motion artifacts for the visualization of the coronaries. The first study (section 2.2, 2D Self-Navigation with Compressed Sensing) consists of a method for 2D translational motion compensation. Here, the use of com- pressed sensing (CS) reconstruction is proposed and investigated to support motion detection by reducing aliasing artifacts. In healthy human subjects, CS demonstrated an improvement in motion detection accuracy with simula¬tions on in vivo data, while improved coronary artery visualization was demon¬strated on in vivo free-breathing acquisitions. However, the motion of the heart induced by respiration has been shown to occur in three dimensions and to be more complex than a simple translation. Therefore, the second study (section 2.3,3D Self-Navigation) consists of a method for 3D affine motion correction rather than 2D only. Here, different techniques were adopted to reduce background signal contribution in respiratory motion tracking, as this can be adversely affected by the static tissue that surrounds the heart. The proposed method demonstrated to improve conspicuity and vi¬sualization of coronary arteries in healthy and cardiovascular disease patient cohorts in comparison to a conventional ID SN method. In the third study (section 2.4, 3D Self-Navigation with Compressed Sensing), the same tracking methods were used to obtain sub-images sorted according to the respiratory position. Then, instead of motion correction, a compressed sensing reconstruction was performed on all sorted sub-image data. This process ex¬ploits the consistency of the sorted data to reduce aliasing artifacts such that the sub-image corresponding to the end-expiratory phase can directly be used to visualize the coronaries. In a healthy volunteer cohort, this strategy improved conspicuity and visualization of the coronary arteries when compared to a con¬ventional ID SN method. For the visualization of the vessel wall and atherosclerotic plaques, the state- of-the-art dual inversion recovery (DIR) technique is able to suppress the signal coming from flowing blood and provide positive wall-lumen contrast. How¬ever, optimal contrast may be difficult to obtain and is subject to RR variability. Furthermore, DIR imaging is time-inefficient and multislice acquisitions may lead to prolonged scanning times. In response and as a fourth study of this thesis (chapter 3, Vessel Wall MRI of the Carotid Arteries), a phase-sensitive DIR method has been implemented and tested in the carotid arteries of a healthy volunteer cohort. By exploiting the phase information of images acquired after DIR, the proposed phase-sensitive method enhances wall-lumen contrast while widens the window of opportunity for image acquisition. As a result, a 3-fold increase in volumetric coverage is obtained at no extra cost in scanning time, while image quality is improved. In conclusion, this thesis presented novel methods to address some of the main challenges for MRI of atherosclerosis: the suppression of motion and flow artifacts for improved visualization of vessel lumens, walls and plaques. Such methods showed to significantly improve image quality in human healthy sub¬jects, as well as scan efficiency and ease-of-use of MRI. Extensive validation is now warranted in patient populations to ascertain their diagnostic perfor¬mance. Eventually, these methods may bring the use of atherosclerosis MRI closer to the clinical practice.

Diplomityön tarkoituksena on selvittää tämänhetkiset Fortum Oil and Gas Oy:n Porvoon öljynjalostamolla suoritettavat ympäristömittaukset ja –määritykset. Samalla arvioidaan täyttävätkö ympäristömittaukset ja –määritykset niille ympäristölainsäädännössä jo asetetut ja lähiaikoina voimaan tulevat vaatimukset. Työssä esitetyissä jalostamoa koskevissa uusissa lainsäädännön velvoitteisssa päästötiedontuotannon laadun varmennuksella on suuri rooli. Työn ensimmäisessä osassa selvitetään ympäristömittausten nykykäytäntö Porvoon jalostamolla. Nykykäytännön selvitys perustuu jalostamon olemassa oleviin toimintajärjestelmän ohjeisiin ja henkilöhaastatteluihin. Samalla tarkastellaan jalostamon toimintaa koskevia uusia lainsäädännön tuomia velvoitteita päästöjen tarkkailulle ja raportoinnille. Työn toisessa osiossa esitetään käytetyt laadunvarmennusmenetelmät mittausten ja määritysten eri tiedontuotantoketjujen vaiheissa. Samalla verrataan toteutettuja päästö- ja ympäristömittauksia uusiin lainsäädännön tuomiin vaatimuksiin, toimintajärjestelmän ohjeistukseen, standardeihin ja tarkkailun parhaan käyttökelpoisen tekniikan vertailuasiakirjaan (Monitoring-BREF). Selvityksen tuloksia voidaan käyttää jalostamon päästötietojen keräysmenetelmien ja tiedontuotantoketjujen laadun varmentamisen saattamiseksi vastaamaan niille asetettuja vaatimuksia. Selvityksen perusteella lupaehdoissa Porvoon jalostamolle asetetut nykyiset vaatimukset päästöjen ja ympäristövaikutusten seurannalle täyttyvät. Jalostamolla on tehtävä parannuksia päästöjentarkkailu ja –raportointimenetelmiin, jotta tulevat lainsäädännön vaatimukset tulevat täytetyksi. Työssä on tehty kineettinen simulointimalli sinkkirikasteen liuotusprosessista. Prosessi on pieni osa Kokkolan sinkinvalmistusprosessia, jonka muita osia ovat: pasutus, neutraaliliuotus, konversio, liuospuhdistus ja elektrolyysi. Rikasteen liuotukseen tulee konversioprosessin liuos ja liuotuksesta lähtevä neste menee takaisin neutraaliliuotukseen. Saostunut jarosiitti läjitetään. Kokkolan liuotusprosessi koostuu liettoreaktorista ja kahdesta neljän liuotusreaktorin sarjasta. Liuotukseen syötetään paluuhappoa liettoreaktoriin ja liuotuspiirien ensimmäisiin liuotusreaktoreihin. Happea syötetään kaikkiin liuotusreaktoreihin. Prosessin mallintamiseen käytettiin Aspen Plus-simulointiohjelmaa, johon pystyttiin syöttämään kineettisiä yhtälöitä. Reaktionopeusyhtälöitä käytettiin raudan hapetuksen, sulfidien liuotuksen ja jarosiitiin saostumisen mallintamiseen, eli kaikkiin liuotusreaktoreissa tapahtuviin reaktioihin. Kineettiset yhtälöt etsittiin kirjallisuudesta. Liettoreaktori puolestaan mallinnettiin syöttämällä ohjelmaan reaktioyhtälöt ja antamalla niille etenemisasteet. Jarosiitin liukenemisesta työssä on tehty laboratoriokokeita, koska aiheesta ei kirjallisuudesta löytynyt kineettistä tietoa. Liuotuskokeissa käytetyn kiintoaineen kuitenkin todettiin sisältävän liikaa götiittiä, että tuloksista olisi voitu laskea kinetiikkaa jarosiitin liukenemiselle. Simulointimallilla laskettiin yksi tapaus vertailukohdaksi, johon malliin tehtyjä muutoksia verrattiin. Mallilla tutkittiin konversiosta tulevan jarosiitin määrän vaikutusta, reaktorikoon merkitystä ja rikasteen liuotuksen sekä jarosiitin saostuksen reaktionopeuksien muutoksen vaikutuksia. Käytetyillä kineettisillä yhtälöillä reaktioiden todettiin tarvitsevan vain ¾ käytetystä reaktiotilavuudesta, rikasteen liuotusnopeuden kohtalaisen pienellä hidastamisen todettiin vähentävän sinkin saantoa ja jarosiitin saostuksen reaktionopeuden kasvulla todettiin myös olevan negatiivinen vaikutus sinkin saantoon. Simulointimallissa käytettyjen reaktionopeusyhtälöiden varmentaminen kokeilla todettiin tarpeelliseksi, sillä jo kohtalaisen pienillä muutoksilla havaittiin olevan merkitystä prosessin toimivuuteen. Lisäksi todettiin jarosiitin liukenemisen huomioimisen olevan tarpeen.

In recent years, massive protostars have turned out to be a possible population of high-energy emitters. Among the best candidates is IRAS 16547-4247, a protostar that presents a powerful outflow with clear signatures of interaction with its environment. This source has been revealed to be a potential high-energy source because it displays non-thermal radio emission of synchrotron origin, which is evidence of relativistic particles. To improve our understanding of IRAS 16547-4247 as a high-energy source, we analyzed XMM-Newton archival data and found that IRAS 16547-4247 is a hard X-ray source. We discuss these results in the context of a refined one-zone model and previous radio observations. From our study we find that it may be difficult to explain the X-ray emission as non-thermal radiation coming from the interaction region, but it might be produced by thermal Bremsstrahlung (plus photo-electric absorption) by a fast shock at the jet end. In the high-energy range, the source might be detectable by the present generation of Cherenkov telescopes, and may eventually be detected by Fermi in the GeV range.

Among unidentified gamma-ray sources in the galactic plane, there are some that present significant variability and have been proposed to be high-mass microquasars. To deepen the study of the possible association between variable low galactic latitude gamma-ray sources and microquasars, we have applied a leptonic jet model based on the microquasar scenario that reproduces the gamma-ray spectrum of three unidentified gamma-ray sources, 3EG J1735-1500, 3EG J1828+0142 and GRO J1411-64, and is consistent with the observational constraints at lower energies. We conclude that if these sources were generated by microquasars, the particle acceleration processes could not be as efficient as in other objects of this type that present harder gamma-ray spectra. Moreover, the dominant mechanism of high-energy emission should be synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scattering, and the radio jets may only be observed at low frequencies. For each particular case, further predictions of jet physical conditions and variability generation mechanisms have been made in the context of the model. Although there might be other candidates able to explain the emission coming from these sources, microquasars cannot be excluded as counterparts. Observations performed by the next generation of gamma-ray instruments, like GLAST, are required to test the proposed model.

Objective of this work was to clarify the competitive situation of Russian mobile telecommunications market: who are the main players, are there many regional operators, what is the possibility of new entrants and how intensive is the competition. In the beginning the history of Russian mobile telecommunications sector is described. In the next chapter environmental factors of the market are examined with the help of PESTEL analysis. After that, players of the market are introduced to ease the following of next chapters. The main theory for this work was industry analysis of five competitive forces by Michael Porter, which is presented before the theory related industry analysis of Russian mobile telecommunications industry. Research for the industry analysis is mainly based on up-to-date articles describing Russian market. As a result of the industry analysis, competitive situation of Russian mobile telecommunications industry and the future prospects are described with the help of factors coming from the PESTEL-analysis. Finally development and future prospects for Russian 3G are reported. As a result of this work, it can be said that Russian mobile telecommunications market is not likely to maintain the growth of previous years, because the market is near saturation. According to passive SIM-cards it has already received saturated. The saturation will also make the market share game between operators more volatile. The market is dominated by three national operators that covered 88% of the income in the first half of 2007. In addition to these three, there are also several regional operators. Structure of the market is likely to consolidate.

The thesis is made of three independent chapters interested in the impact of globalization on workers in industrialized countries. The dissertation is especially focused on identifying the causal impact of international trade on workers' mobility, wages, and employment with both a short- and medium-term perspective. The first paper explores the relation between intra-industry trade (IIT) expansion and associated worker flows, taking the latter as an indicator of labor-market adjustment costs. Being the first study to combine theoretical simulations and a novel identification strategy, we find that both theoretical and empirical analyses are consistent with the "smooth adjustment hypothesis", according to which IIT expansion is less disruptive than inter-industry trade expansion. The study therefore lends support to the use of IIT indices as first-pass proxies for the adjustment effects of trade expansion. The second chapter contrasts the impact of increased import competition coming from China and the European Union (EU) on workers in the United Kingdom over a 15-year period. The most salient findings show that increased imports from China had significantly negative effects on workers' earnings, wages and employment. In contrast, larger imports from the EU are associated with positive worker-level outcomes, which is largely explained by the fact that increased imports from the EU were mostly offset by increased same-industry exports to the EU. Besides, we find that increased imports from China exert additional pressure on workers through spillovers to employment and wages in downstream industries. Finally, the last chapter is focused on the impact of exposure to trade and real exchange rate shocks on wages for Swiss manufacturing workers. A particular attention is made to consistently estimate the causal effect in using a two-step gravity-type identification strategy. The study shows that the impact of trade and exchange rate movements is concentrated among high-skilled workers almost exclusively.

Methods: We performed a focused ethnographic study. Twenty patients were interviewed. Data were analyzed using content analysis and constant comparison following the method proposed by Miles and Huberman. Results: A functioning SPK Tx allowed renal replacement therapy and insulin to be discontinued. To describe their new situation, patients used words and phrases such as"miracle","being reborn" or"coming back to life". Although the complications of T1DM, its surgery and treatment, and associated psychological problems did not disappear after SPK Tx, these were minimized when compared with the pretransplantation situation. Conclusion: For patients, SPK Tx represents a recovery of their health and autonomy despite remaining problems associated with the complications of T1DM and SPK Tx. The understanding of patients" existential framework and their experience of disease are key factors for planning new intervention and improvement strategies.

Background: Few qualitative studies of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK Tx) have been published. The aims of this study were to explore from the perspective of patients, the experience of living with diabetes mellitus type 1 (T1DM), suffering from complications, and undergoing SPK Tx with good outcome; and to determine the impact of SPK Tx on patients and their social and cultural environment. Methods: We performed a focused ethnographic study. Twenty patients were interviewed. Data were analyzed using content analysis and constant comparison following the method proposed by Miles and Huberman. Results: A functioning SPK Tx allowed renal replacement therapy and insulin to be discontinued.
