Improving low achievers' academic performance at university by changing the social value of mastery goals

Recent research has shown that, in a University context, mastery goals are highly valued, and that students may endorse these goals either because they believe in their utility (i.e., social utility), in which case mastery goals are positively linked to achievement, or to create a positive image of themselves (i.e., social desirability), in which case mastery goals do not predict academic achievement. The present two experiments induced high vs. neutral levels of mastery goals' social utility and social desirability. Results confirmed that mastery goals predicted performance only when these goals were presented as socially useful but not socially desirable, especially among low achievers, those who need mastery goals the most to succeed.

Rullaavan ennustamisen kehittäminen CASE: ABB Oy Service

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää rullaavan ennustamisen toimintaa, jotta se tuottaisi relevanttia informaatiota tapausyrityksen ohjaukselle. Tutkimuksessa sovellettiin konstruktiivista tutkimusotetta, joka on ratkaisumenetelmä liikkeenjohdollisiin ongelmiin. Tutkimustulos eli ratkaisukonstruktio innovoitiin tutkijan luoman viitekehyksen ja empiirisen tutkimuksen havaintojen avulla. Tutkimustuloksien perusteella analyyttisen rullaavan ennustamisen tarkoituksena on tyydyttää eri ohjaustasojen informaatiotarpeita ja tukea asiakaslähtöisen tapausyrityksen liiketoimintaympäristöön sopeutumista. Tutkimuksen mukaan rullaava ennustaminen on suunnittelua, joka pyrkii organisatoriseen oppimiseen. Kehittämiseen liittyviä näkökulmia, organisatorisia ja järjestelmällisiä tekijöitä löydettiin useita. Nämä eivät rajoittuneet ainoastaan johdon laskentatoimen alueelle.

Strategy Formulation and Implementation Case of High Tech Instruments

The strategy process is a method for strategy formulation and implementation. The strategy process is commonly used especially within bigger companies. It is important to link the strategy formulation and implementation. The objective of this thesis has been to find out improvement areas for the case company’s strategy process. The theoretical framework based on literature emphasizes on strategy process as a method for strategy formulation and implementation. The theoretical framework, several mainly ad hoc interviews and author’s observation were used as tools to analyze the case company’s strategy process. The hierarchy in between the various corporate levels provides the foundation to formulate and implement the strategies. These strategies include the corporate and strategic business area level strategies. The recommendations to improve the case company’s strategy process were formulated at corporate and strategic business area levels. These recommendations were formulated based on research and experience gained throughout the work. The role of strategic projects to implement the strategies more efficiently and organizational control over distribution were found as potential improvement areas. The resource allocation prioritizing towards the most important strategic projects was also an important improvement area.

Les artistes visuels au Yémen, du soutien à la contestation de l'ordre politique

Cette thèse appréhende les rapports au politique des artistes visuels yéménites dans un contexte de domination, recouvrant trois États (les deux républiques qui précédent l'unification du Yémen et la république actuelle créée en 1990, jusqu'en 2015). En étudiant la domination en acte à travers une démarche ethnographique, ce travail interroge les conditions de production et d'action des artistes en soutien ou en contestation au régime, comme au cours du moment révolutionnaire de 2011. On observe ainsi le processus de politisation des mondes de l'art au Yémen contemporain, processus compris en tant qu'acquisition d'une signification politique par la pratique artistique et par les réseaux de relations entretenus par les artistes visuels. Ces requalifications de leur travail ou de leurs actions se font dans un contexte traversé par des luttes concurrentielles pour la répartition du pouvoir, aussi bien internes et propres à leurs mondes d'activité, qu'externes et en relation à l'espace politique institutionnel. La politisation des mondes de l'art apparaît dès lors moins comme un instrument d'accès à cet espace qu'une voie pour accéder à plus de visibilité, à la reconnaissance, et à un meilleur positionnement dans les rapports agonistiques qui configurent ces mondes. -- This thesis focuses on the study of Yemeni visual artists' relation to politics in a context of domination, covering three States (the two republics that precede Yemen's unification and the current republic established in 1990, until 2015). Studying domination in action througli an ethnographic approach, this work questions artists' conditions of production and of action in support to or in contestation of the regime- as in the case of the revolutionary period of 2011. It observes the politicization of art worlds in contemporary Yemen, a process understood as the acquisition of a political significance as observed in the artistic practice and in the dynamic networks that artists maintain. The requalification and reclassification of their work and their actions that results from the politicization of art worlds, takes place in a context of competitive struggles over distribution and access to sites of power. Such conflict over power occurs within their own worlds of activity as well as outside them and in relation to the domain of institutional politics. This thesis contends that the politicization of art worlds is more of a means to access visibility and recognition than a resource to participate in the political field. Through the politicization of art, artists are able to better position themselves within the agonistic relations that exist within art worlds.

La voluntad del retorno: correspondencia desde el exilio catalán

[spa] El presente artículo ofrece una aproximación al complejo fenómeno del exilio provocado por la Guerra Civil española desde un punto de vista poco analizado hasta este momento: el estudio a través de los epistolarios existentes de los sentimientos personales que hizo aflorar este abandono forzado del país (miedos, deseos, esperanzas, incertidumbres, preocupaciones e inquietudes, ánimos, etc.). Para conseguir esta visión más personal hemos basado nuestra investigación en el análisis de unas fuentes que consideramos poco trabajadas hasta el momento como son los epistolarios. El estudio de éstos, ya sean fuentes primarias depositadas en fondos de archivos diversos de Catalunya como los epistolarios editados, nos ha permitido obtener un testimonio personal y de primera mano de un fenómeno, el del exilio, tratado principalmente hasta ahora desde un punto de vista colectivo. El análisis, centrado básicamente en personajes catalanes y en el periodo comprendido entre 1939 y 1946 (cuando se desvanece definitivamente la esperanza que la victoria aliada provoque el fin del régimen) pone de manifiesto una voluntad común: el ansia del retorno.

De la investigación didáctica al libro de texto: el gesto lector de resumir textos narrativos

La comunicación que presentamos nace de una investigación centrada en la descripción del gesto lector del resumen de textos narrativos por parte del alumnado que inicia la educación secundaria obligatoria. Los resultados obtenidos han permitido elaborar una rúbrica descriptiva que nos informa del estado de desarrollo de multitud de procesos relacionados con este gesto lector y, en consecuencia, pueden ser utilizados para centrar la formación del alumnado en las distintas etapas educativas. La comunicación mostrará la posibilidad de incorporar los resultados de la investigación en los libros de texto destinados al alumnado.

The Química Nova Interativa (QNInt) portal was launched in 2009 by the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) to offer free quality content for broad audiences. QNInt provides peer-reviewed articles from SBQ journals on science & society, chemical concepts, classroom activities and educational research. With 3,000,000 visits, QNInt also offers a unique library of interactive molecules. In the International Year of Chemistry QNInt served for distributing pH kits and registering data from IUPAC's Global Water Experiment, yielding Brazil the largest share of the global pH data set. Visualização no ensino de química: apontamentos para a pesquisa e desenvolvimento de recursos educacionais

Visualization is a fast-growing field in science education. This review covers 171 articles published between 2001 and 2010 in 14 science education journals. Major findings include: i - despite the predominance of English speaking countries, interest in the topic has increased in several countries; ii - qualitative research is increasing, but quantitative methodologies prevail; iii - the role of peer interaction in group activities is little investigated; iv - research on the way students and teachers use visualization tools is increasing, but most publications focus on the tools; v - structure of matter remains the most common subject covered.
