Progesterone-receptor complex from freshly prepared hen oviduct cytosol acquired the ability to bind to isolated nuclei, DNA-cellulose and ATP-Sepharose when incubated with 5-10 mM ATP at 4°C. The extent of this ATP-dependent activation was higher when compared with heat-activation achieved by warming the progesterone- receptor complex at 23 °C. The transformation of progesterone-receptor complex which occurred in a time-dependent manner was only partially dependent on hormone presence. The ATP effect was selective in causing this transformation whereas ADP, AMP and cAMP failed to show any such effect. The non-hydrolizable analogs of ATP, adenosine 5'-[a,/3-methylene]triphosphate and adenosine 5-[/l,y-imido]triphosphate were also found to be ineffective. Presence of 10 mM sodium molybdate blocked both the ATP and the heat-activation of progesterone-receptor complex. Mn" or Mg` had no detectable effect on the receptor activation but the presence of Ca" increased the extent of ATP-activation slightly. EDTA presence (> 5 mM) decreased the extent of receptor activation by about 40 % and was, therefore, not included in the buffers used for activation studies. Divalent cations were also ineffective when tested in the presence of 1- 5 mM EDTA. The properties of progesterone-receptor complex remained intact under the above conditions when analyzed for steroid-binding specificity and Scatchard analysis. However, the ATP-activated progesterone-receptor complex lost the ability to aggregate when tested on low-salt sucrose gradients. ATP was equally effective in activating the rat-uterine estradiol-receptor complex at 4 "C and influenced the transformation of 4-S receptor form into a 5-S form when analyzed on sucrose gradients containing 0.3 M KCI. The presence of ATP also increased the rate of activation of progesterone-receptor complex at 23 °C. These findings suggest a role for ATP in receptor function and offer a convenient method of studying the process of receptor activation at low temperature and mild assay conditions.

The present study addresses to understand the sedimentological properties of the coasts of kodungallur and chellanam, central Kerala to bring out the relationship between the textural, mineralogical and geochemical characters with that of the respective environment. The grain size study of the beach ridge sediments from different pits has been investigated at close intervals, which enables to understand the grain size variations with depth. The sediment samples from various pits of the beach ridges indicate that the sediments range primarily from medium to very fine sand, well to moderately sorted, fine to coarse skewed and leptokurtic to platykurtic. The study area is considered as a prograding coast. Variations in grain size down the pit give three phases of beach building activities i.e.; a coarsening upward sequence in the bottom layers, a fining upward in the middle and coarsening upward in the top. Beach ridges are formed by swash built sediments with cross bedding and setting lag type sediments with seaward dipping/horizontal units. Geochemical signatures in the study area have been brought out through the analysis of major and trace elements. Iron is significantly enriched and its control over many trace elements is evident. Copper, chromium, cobalt, lithium, lead and zinc show decreasing trend with depth, while sodium, potassium, strontium, nickel and organic carbon increases. The association of many trace elements with organic carbon has also been established. Dissolution of trace elements in anoxic environment, at depth and reprecipitation in the oxic layers, at near or subsurface, are the major mechanism that brought out the variation of certain environmentally sensitive elements

In the present study the preparation and characterisation of rubber ferrite composites (RFC) containing barium ferrite (BaF) and strontium ferrite (SrF) have been dealt with. The incorporation of the hard ferrites into natural and nitrile rubber was carried out according to a specific recipe for various loadings of magnetic fillers. For this, the ferrite materials namely barium ferrite and strontium ferrite having the general formula MO6Fe2O3 have been prepared by the conventional ceramic techniques. After characterisation they were incorporated into the natural and nitrile rubber matrix by mechanical method. Carbon black was also incorporated at different loading into the rubber ferrite composites to study its effect on various properties. The cure characteristics, mechanical, dielectric and magnetic properties of these composites were evaluated. The ac electrical conductivity of both the ceramic ferrites and rubber ferrite composites were also calculated using a simple relation. The investigations revealed that the rubber ferrite composites with the required dielectric and magnetic properties can be obtained by the incorporation of ferrite fillers into the rubber matrix, without compromising much on the processability and mechanical properties.

This thesis lays importance in the investigation on the multiferroic and thermooelectric properties of selected representatives of low bandwidth and intermediate band width manganites. The first candidate, Strontium doped Gd manganite, is prepared by wet solid state reaction method and the second candidate, Na doped La manganite, by citrate gel method. In addition to the above mentioned properties, magneto resistance and dielectric properties are investigated. Using dielectric spectroscopic the dispersion parameters are correlated to the relaxation mechanisms and an attempt is made to obtain the grain and grain boundary contribution to the impedance of the sample through impedance spectroscopy studies.

Laser‐induced damage and ablation thresholds of bulk superconducting samples of Bi2(SrCa)xCu3Oy(x=2, 2.2, 2.6, 2.8, 3) and Bi1.6 (Pb)xSr2Ca2Cu3 Oy (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) for irradiation with a 1.06 μm beam from a Nd‐YAG laser have been determined as a function of x by the pulsed photothermal deflection technique. The threshold values of power density for ablation as well as damage are found to increase with increasing values of x in both systems while in the Pb‐doped system the threshold values decrease above a specific value of x, coinciding with the point at which the Tc also begins to fall.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are relatively new computational tools that have found extensive utilization in solving many complex real-world problems. This paper describes how an ANN can be used to identify the spectral lines of elements. The spectral lines of Cadmium (Cd), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Lithium (Li), Mercury (Hg), Potassium (K) and Strontium (Sr) in the visible range are chosen for the investigation. One of the unique features of this technique is that it uses the whole spectrum in the visible range instead of individual spectral lines. The spectrum of a sample taken with a spectrometer contains both original peaks and spurious peaks. It is a tedious task to identify these peaks to determine the elements present in the sample. ANNs capability of retrieving original data from noisy spectrum is also explored in this paper. The importance of the need of sufficient data for training ANNs to get accurate results is also emphasized. Two networks are examined: one trained in all spectral lines and other with the persistent lines only. The network trained in all spectral lines is found to be superior in analyzing the spectrum even in a noisy environment.

Previous anthropological investigations at Trentholme Drive, in Roman York identified an unusual amount of cranial variation amongst the inhabitants, with some individuals suggested as having originated from the Middle East or North Africa. The current study investigates the validity of this assessment using modern anthropological methods to assess cranial variation in two groups: The Railway and Trentholme Drive. Strontium and oxygen isotope evidence derived from the dentition of 43 of these individuals was combined with the craniometric data to provide information on possible levels of migration and the range of homelands that may be represented. The results of the craniometric analysis indicated that the majority of the York population had European origins, but that 11% of the Trentholme Drive and 12% of The Railway study samples were likely of African decent. Oxygen analysis identified four incomers, three from areas warmer than the UK and one from a cooler or more continental climate. Although based on a relatively small sample of the overall population at York, this multidisciplinary approach made it possible to identify incomers, both men and women, from across the Empire. Evidence for possible second generation migrants was also suggested. The results confirm the presence of a heterogeneous population resident in York and highlight the diversity, rather than the uniformity, of the population in Roman Britain. Sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and methanogenic archaea (MA) are important anaerobic terminal oxidisers of organic matter. However, we have little knowledge about the distribution and types of SRB and MA in the environment or the functional role they play in situ. Here we have utilised sediment slurry microcosms amended with ecologically significant substrates, including acetate and hydrogen, and specific functional inhibitors, to identify the important SRB and MA groups in two contrasting sites on a UK estuary. Substrate and inhibitor additions had significant effects on methane production and on acetate and sulphate consumption in the slurries. By using specific 16S-targeted oligonucleotide probes we were able to link specific SRB and MA groups to the use of the added substrates. Acetate consumption in the freshwater-dominated sediments was mediated by Methanosarcinales under low-sulphate conditions and Desulfobacter under the high-sulphate conditions that simulated a tidal incursion. In the marine-dominated sediments, acetate consumption was linked to Desulfobacter. Addition of trimethylamine, a non-competitive substrate for methanogenesis, led to a large increase in Methanosarcinales signal in marine slurries. Desulfobulbus was linked to non-sulphate-dependent H-2 consumption in the freshwater sediments. The addition of sulphate to freshwater sediments inhibited methane production and reduced signal from probes targeted to Methanosarcinales and Methanomicrobiales, while the addition of molybdate to marine sediments inhibited Desulfobulbus and Desulfobacterium. These data complement our understanding of the ecophysiology of the organisms detected and make a firm connection between the capabilities of species, as observed in the laboratory, to their roles in the environment. A synthetic method for chemically tethering organic based surfactant molecules and fluorous surfactant molecules onto a high surface and pore volume silica has been developed. It is shown that heterogenisation of a simple water-soluble ions (i.e. molybdate ion and Co2+) can be accomplished onto these composite materials. They display an excellent activity and selectivity for oxidation of organic molecules in bulk organic solvent or in supercritical CO2. Characterisations indicate that catalysis occurs within the surface supported surfactant assemblies (chemically tethered reversed micelles) in the porous silica structure. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. In order to investigate how the population diversity at major Romano-British urban centres compared to small towns and military outposts, we conducted multi-isotope (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and strontium) analyses of bones (42 individuals) and teeth (26 individuals) of human skeletons from Cataractonium/ Roman Catterick in North Yorkshire (U.K.). The results suggest a markedly less diverse population at Catterick than at the larger towns. Significant differences are observed between burials from the town and fort area and the suburb of Bainesse to the south, and it is suggested that these reflect a shift to more localised recruitment for the Roman army in the Late Roman period. Isotope data for the ‘Bainesse Eunuch’, an unusual 4th century burial that has been interpreted as the remains of a ‘transvestite’ priest of Cybele, are not ultimately conclusive but consistent with origins in Southern Britain or areas with a similar climate abroad. This paper also presents strontium isotope data for modern vegetation samples from 17 sites in the Catterick/northern Vale of York area which contribute to a continuing effort to map the biosphere 87Sr/86Sr variation in Britain.

[Et3NH]4[Mo8O26] (1) was prepared by reacting triethylamine with either molybdenum trioxide dihydrate or with a solution of ammonium molybdate in aqueous HCl. An aqueous solution of complex 1 reacted with an excess of sodium chloride to give a mixture of [Et3NH]3[NaMo8O26] (2) and [Et3NH]2[Mo6O19] (3). Complex 2 was also formed on reacting sodium molybdate with triethylamine in aqueous HCl. In the reaction of 1 with potassium chloride the nature of the product obtained was critically dependent upon reaction time. After a 5.5 h reflux period a mixture of [Et3NH]3[KMo8O26] (4) and 3 was obtained, whereas upon prolonged reflux (24 h) only K4Mo8O26 · H2O (5) was precipitated. The X-ray crystal structure of 2 shows it to be polymeric, with each Na+ ion sandwiched between two β[Mo8O26]4− ions. Four oxygen atoms on one face of each β[Mo8O26]4− ion are coordinated to a Na+ ion, and four oxygens from the opposite face are bonded to the next Na+ ion in the polymer chain. This produces a zig-zag arrangement of Na+ ions throughout the molecular structure. Spectral, conductivity and voltammetry data are given.

Future high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) may increase biomass production of terrestrial plants and hence plant requirements for soil mineral nutrients to sustain a greater biomass production. Phosphorus (P), an element essential for plant growth, is found in soils both in inorganic and in organic forms. In this work, three genotypes of Populus were grown under ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations (FACE) for 5 years. An N fertilisation treatment was added in years 4 and 5 after planting. Using a fractionation scheme, total P was sequentially extracted using H2O, NaOH, HCl and HNO3, and P determined as both molybdate (Mo) reactive and total P. Molybdate-reactive P is defined as mainly inorganic but also some labile organic P which is determined by Vanado-molybdophosphoric acid colorimetric methods. Organic P was also measured to assess all plant available and weatherable P pools. We tested the hypotheses that higher P demand due to increased growth is met by a depletion of easily weatherable soil P pools, and that increased biomass inputs increases the amount of organic P in the soil. The concentration of organic P increased under FACE, but was associated with a decrease in total soil organic matter. The greatest increase in the soil P due to elevated CO2 was found in the HCl-extractable P fraction in the non-fertilised treatment. In the NaOH-extractable fraction the Mo-reactive P increased under FACE, but total P did not differ between ambient and FACE. The increase in both the NaOH- and HCl-extractable fractions was smaller after N addition. The results showed that elevated atmospheric CO2 has a positive effect on soil P availability rather than leading to depletion. We suggest that the increase in the NaOH- and HCl-extractable fractions is biologically driven by organic matter mineralization, weathering and mycorrhizal hyphal turnover.
