Multiple type I interferons (IFNs) have recently been identified in salmonids, containing two or four conserved cysteines. In this work, a novel two-cysteine containing (2C) IFN gene was identified in rainbow trout. This novel trout IFN gene (termed IFN5) formed a phylogenetic group that is distinct from the other three salmonid IFN groups sequenced to date and had a close evolutionary relationship with IFNs from advanced fish species. Our data demonstrate that two subgroups are apparent within each of the 2C and 4C type I IFNs, an evolutionary outcome possibly due to two rounds of genome duplication events that have occurred within teleosts. We have examined gene expression of the trout 2C type I IFN in cultured cells following stimulation with lipopolysaccharide, phytohaemagglutinin, polyI:C or recombinant IFN, or after transfection with polyI:C. The kinetics of gene expression was also studied after viral infection. Analysis of the regulatory elements in the IFN promoter region predicted several binding sites for key transcription factors that potentially play an important role in mediating IFN5 gene expression.

This paper presents a three-dimensional comprehensive model for the calculation of vibration in a building based on pile-foundation due to moving trains in a nearby underground tunnel. The model calculates the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the building's responses due to trains moving on floating-slab tracks with random roughness. The tunnel and its surrounding soil are modelled as a cylindrical shell embedded in half-space using the well-known PiP model. The building and its piles are modelled as a 2D frame using the dynamic stiffness matrix. Coupling between the foundation and the ground is performed using the theory of joining subsystems in the frequency domain. The latter requires calculations of transfer functions of a half-space model. A convenient choice based on the thin-layer method is selected in this work for the calculations of responses in a half-space due to circular strip loadings. The coupling considers the influence of the building's dynamics on the incident wave field from the tunnel, but ignores any reflections of building's waves from the tunnel. The derivation made in the paper shows that the incident vibration field at the building's foundation gets modified by a term reflecting the coupling and the dynamics of the building and its foundation. The comparisons presented in the paper show that the dynamics of the building and its foundation significantly change the incident vibration field from the tunnel and they can lead to loss of accuracy of predictions if not considered in the calculation.

Crack-free GaN films have been achieved by inserting an Indoped low-temperature (LT) AlGaN interlayer grown on silicon by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The relationship between lattice constants c and a obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis shows that indium doping interlayer can reduce the stress in GaN layers. The stress in GaN decreases with increasing trimethylindium (TMIn) during interlayer growth. Moreover, for a smaller TMIn flow, the stress in GaN decreases dramatically when In acts as a surfactant to improve the crystallinity of the AlGaN interlayer, and for a larger TMIn flow, the stress will increase again. The decreased stress leads to smoother surfaces and fewer cracks for GaN layers by using an In-doped interlayer than by using an undoped interlayer. In doping has been found to enhance the lateral growth and reduce the growth rate of the c face. It can explain the strain relief and cracks reduction in GaN films. This letter reports on the Raman, optical and magnetic properties of FeNi co-doped ZnO nanowires prepared via a soft chemical solution method. The microstructural investigations show that the NiFe co-dopants are substituted into wurtzite ZnO nanostructure without forming any secondary phase. The co-doped nanowires show a remarkable reduction of 34 nm (267.9 meV) in the optical band gap, while suppression in the deep-level defect transition in visible luminescence. Furthermore, these nanowires exhibit ferromagnetism and an interesting low-temperature spin glass behavior, which may arise due to the presence of disorder and strong interactions of frustrated spin moments of Ni and Fe co-dopants on the ZnO lattice sites. Mn ions have been incorporated into MOCVD grown Al1-x In (x) N/GaN thin films by ion implantation to achieve the room temperature ferromagnetism in the samples. Magnetic characterizations revealed the presence of two ferromagnetic transitions one has Curie points at similar to 260 K and the other above room temperature. In-diffusion of indium caused by the Mn implantation leads to the partition of AlInN epilayer into two diluted magnetic semiconductor sub-layers depending on the Mn concentration. The Curie temperature of 260 K is assigned to the layer having lower concentration, whereas T (c) above room temperature is assumed to be associated to the layer having higher Mn concentration.

Ferromagnetic properties of Mn-implanted wurtzite AlxIn1-xN/GaN thin films grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were observed using a quantum design superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Hysteresis behavior with a reasonably high saturation magnetic moment at room temperature for all the samples was noted, Two optical thresholds were observed at 1.58 and 2.64 eV, which are attributed to internal transition (E-5 -> T-5(2)) of Mn3+ (d(4)) and hole emission from the neutral Mn acceptor level to the valence band respectively. Bound magnetic polaron formation is considered to be the origin of ferromagnetism in our samples. (c) 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

A phosphor-conversion white light using an InGaN laser diode that emits 405 nm near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light and phosphors that emit in the red/green/blue region when excited by the n-UV light was fabricated. The relationship of the luminous flux and the luminous efficacy of the white light with injection current were discussed. Based on the evaluation method for luminous efficacy of light sources established by the Commission International de I'Eclairage (CIE) and the phosphor used in this experiment, a theoretical analysis of the experiment results and the maximum luminous efficacy of this white light fabrication method were also presented.

The effect of beta particles interaction on the optical properties of MOCVD grown GaN is reported. A significant change in luminescence properties of GaN is observed after exposing the material with 0.6 MeV beta particles with low dose of 10(12) cm(-2). The results obtained from photoluminescence measurements of irradiated GaN samples in low dose are found contradictory to those reported in literature for samples irradiated with heavy dose (> 10(15) cm(-2)) of electron. An increase in intensity of yellow luminescence has been observed with increasing dose of beta particles which is in disagreement to the already reported results in literature for heavily irradiated samples. A model has been proposed to sort out this inconsistency. The increase in YL intensity at low dose is attributed to the increase in concentration of VGaON complex whereas production of non-radiative VGaON clusters is assumed to justify the decrease in YL intensity at high dose.

We investigated AlGaN layers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on high temperature (HT-)GaN and AlGaN buffer layers. On GaN buffer layer, there are a lot of surface cracking because of tensile strain in subsequent AlGaN epilayers. On HT-AlGaN buffer layer, not only cracks but also high densities rounded pits present, which is related to the high density of coalescence boundaries in HT-AlGaN growth process. The insertion of interlayer (IL) between AlGaN and the GaN pseudosubstrate can not only avoid cracking by modifying the strain status of the epilayer structure, but also improved Al incorporation efficiency and lead to phase-separation. And we also found the growth temperature of IL is a critical parameter for crystalline quality of subsequent AlGaN epilayer. Low temperature (LT-) A1N IL lead to a inferior quality in subsequent AlGaN epilayers.

We demonstrate a novel oxide confined GaAs-based photonic crystal vertical cavity surface emitting laser (PC-VCSEL) operating at a wavelength of 850 nm based on coherent coupling. A ring-shaped light-emitting aperture is added to the conventional PC-VCSEL, and coherent coupling is achieved between the central defect aperture and the ring-shaped light-emitting aperture. Measurements show that under the continuous-wave (CW) injected current of 20 mA, a high power of 2 mW is obtained, and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is larger than 20 dB. The average divergence angle is 4.2 degrees at the current level of 20 mA. Compared with the results ever reported, the divergence angle is reduced.

We have experimentally demonstrated pulses 0.4 mJ in duration smaller than 12 fs with an excellent spatial beam profile by self-guided propagation in argon. The original 52 fs pulses from the chirped pulsed amplification laser system are first precompressed to 32 fs by inserting an acoustic optical programmable dispersive filter instrument into the laser system for spectrum reshaping and dispersion compensation, and the pulse spectrum is subsequently broadened by filamentation in an argon cell. By using chirped mirrors for post-dispersion compensation, the pulses are successfully compressed to smaller than 12 fs.

Fourier modal method incorporating staircase approximation is used to study tapered crossed subwavelength gratings in this paper. Three intuitive formulations of eigenvalue functions originating from the prototype are presented, and their convergences are compared through numerical calculation. One of them is found to be suitable in modeling the diffraction efficiency of the circular tapered crossed subwavelength gratings without high absorption, and staircase approximation is further proven valid for non-highly-absorption tapered gratings. This approach is used to simulate the "moth-eye" antireflection surface on silicon, and the numerical result agrees well with the experimental one.

Theories of wetting of liquids on solid surfaces under the condition that van der Waals force is dominant are briefly reviewed. We show theoretically that Zisman's empirical equation for wetting of liquids on solid surfaces is a linear approximation of the Young-van der Waals equation in the wetting region, and we express the two parameters in Zisman's empirical equation in terms of the dielectric polarizabilities of the solid and liquids. The materials contained in this paper are suitable for physics teaching of wetting phenomena for undergraduate, graduate, general physicist, etc.
