The treatment of sodium bicarbonate at the dosage of 100 to 1000 mg/litre has been tested experimentally on the hatching and postembryonic growth of Brachydanio rerio, Cyprinus carpio, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Catla catla. Lower dosages of 100 to 200 mg have been found to reduce the hatching period, yolk absorption period and improve the survival and growth of the post embryonic larvae. The higher dosages of 500 to 1000 mg has been found to reduce the hatching percentage and post embryonic growth of the larvae. The findings indicate that application of sodium bicarbonate in the hatchery and nursery management of carps in the lower dosages of 100 to 200 mg/L to improve hatching and postembryonic growth.

The study deals with the effect of mesh size on the fishing power of gill nets. The authors have shown that there can be substantial difference in the out puts of sardine gill nets, of identical design and rigging, but of different mesh sizes, operated under the same conditions.

The communication deals with the results of comparative tests conducted from Cochin base to study the effect of a tickler chain on the catches landed by a 55' shrimp otter trawl. The net was operated with and without chain and 82 hauls of 61 hours and 28 minutes total duration were made. The following are the conclusions: (a) the catch of shrimp per hour of trawling is increased by about 71% due to attachment of the chain to the ground rope; (b) the attachment of the tickler chain also increased the catch of fish by 25%. The increase in the catch of shrimps and fish is probably due to the disturbance caused by moving chain attached to the foot-rope.

The Indian standards Institution have recently laid down specifications for the grading of frozen shrimp of which the bacterial examination of the product forms a significant part. Work carried out in this regard in our laboratories have shown that various improvements could be made in the composition of the medium to obtain a more true picture of the total bacterial count. Changes in the medium for total bacterial count have, therefore, been suggested and the reasons for the same discussed.

The paper "The effect of mesh size on the fishing efficiency of sardine gill nets" [K.M. Joseph and A.V. Sebastian, Fish. Tech; 1(2), 180-182 (1964)] marks an important step in the progress of fisheries technology and biology in India.

Even though smoke curing is a very elegant method of preserving fish, the resultant products have only a very restricted shelf-life, unless stored under refrigerated conditions. The main source of spoilage is the early setting in of a vigorous growth of moulds. This problem is of a serious nature even in temperate climatic conditions. In full and universal recognition of the gravity of the problem, the FAO conference on herring technology held in September 1950 at Bergen in Norway has recommended the problem of "means of prevention of mould growth in smoked products" for future research study. This note records an interesting observation made at this Laboratory on the inhibitory action of sodium chloride on the development of mould in smoked fishery products.

Threshold current densities required for narcosis of fish in captivity differed in different species. Increased temperature of the water had greater effect on the fishes while changes of pH had no appreciable effect on narcosis in the fishes. Impulse currents of 50 V were found to have better effect on the fishes than continuous current of 180-220 V.
