The noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance of passenger vehicles strongly depends on the fluid-structure interaction between the air in the vehicle cavity and the sheet metal structure of the vehicle. Most of the noise and vibration problems related to this interaction come from resonance peaks of the sheet metal, which are excited by external forces (road, engine, and wind). A reduction in these resonance peaks can be achieved by applying bitumen damping layers, also called deadeners, in the sheet metal. The problem is where these deadeners shall be fixed, which is usually done in a trial-and-error basis. In this work, one proposes the use of embedded sensitivity to locate the deadeners in the sheet metal of the vehicle, more specifically in the vehicle roof. Experimental frequency response functions (FRFs) of the roof are obtained and the data are processed by adopting the embedded sensitivity method, thus obtaining the sensitivity of the resonance peaks on the local increase in damping due to the deadeners. As a result, by examining the sensitivity functions, one can find the optimum location of the deadeners that maximize their effect in reducing the resonance peaks of interest. After locating the deadeners in the optimum positions, it was possible to verify a strong reduction in resonance peaks of the vehicle roof, thus showing the efficiency of the procedure. The main advantage of this procedure is that it only requires FRF measurements of the vehicle in its original state not needing any previous modification of the vehicle structure to find the sensitivity functions. The nature of the molecular structure of plastics makes the properties of such materials markedly temperature dependent. In addition, the continuous increase in the utilization of polymeric materials in many specific applications has demanded knowledge of their physical properties, both during their processing as raw material, as well as over the working temperature range of the final polymer product. Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat, namely the thermal properties, are the three most important physical properties of a material that are needed for heat transfer calculations. Recently, among several different methods for the determination of the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, transient techniques have become the preferable way for measuring thermal properties of materials. In this work, a very simple and low cost variation of the well known Angstrom method is employed in the experimental determination of the thermal diffusivity of some selected polymers. Cylindrical shaped samples 3 cm diameter and 7 cm high were prepared by cutting from long cylindrical commercial bars. The reproducibility is very good, and the results obtained were checked against results obtained by the hot wire technique, laser flash technique, and when possible, they were also compared with data found in the literature. Thermal conductivity may be then derived from the thermal diffusivity with the knowledge of the bulk density and the specific heat, easily obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. On-line leak detection is a main concern for the safe operation of pipelines. Acoustic and mass balance are the most important and extensively applied technologies in field problems. The objective of this work is to compare these leak detection methods with respect to a given reference situation, i.e., the same pipeline and monitoring signals acquired at the inlet and outlet ends. Experimental tests were conducted in a 749 m long laboratory pipeline transporting water as the working fluid. The instrumentation included pressure transducers and electromagnetic flowmeters. Leaks were simulated by opening solenoid valves placed at known positions and previously calibrated to produce known average leak flow rates. Results have clearly shown the limitations and advantages of each method. It is also quite clear that acoustics and mass balance technologies are, in fact, complementary. In general, an acoustic leak detection system sends out an alarm more rapidly and locates the leak more precisely, provided that the rupture of the pipeline occurs abruptly enough. On the other hand, a mass balance leak detection method is capable of quantifying the leak flow rate very accurately and of detecting progressive leaks.

This paper describes the manufacture of tubular ceramic membranes and the study of their performance in the demulsification of soybean oil/water emulsions. The membranes were made by iso-static pressing method and micro and macro structurally characterized by SEM, porosimetry by mercury intrusion and determination of apparent density and porosity. The microfiltration tests were realized on an experimental workbench, and fluid dynamic parameters, such as transmembrane flux and pressure were used to evaluate the process relative to the oil phase concentration (analysed by TOC measurements) in the permeate. The results showed that the membrane with pores` average diameter of 1.36 mu m achieved higher transmembrane flux than the membrane with pores` average diameter of 0.8 mu m. The volume of open pores (responsible for the permeation) was predominant in the total porosity, which was higher than 50% for all tested membranes. Concerning demulsification, the monolayer membranes were efficacious, as the rejection coefficient was higher than 99%.

This work presents an automated system for the measurement of form errors of mechanical components using an industrial robot. A three-probe error separation technique was employed to allow decoupling between the measured form error and errors introduced by the robotic system. A mathematical model of the measuring system was developed to provide inspection results by means of the solution of a system of linear equations. A new self-calibration procedure, which employs redundant data from several runs, minimizes the influence of probes zero-adjustment on the final result. Experimental tests applied to the measurement of straightness errors of mechanical components were accomplished and demonstrated the effectiveness of the employed methodology. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A finite element homogenization method for a shear actuated d(15) macro-fibre composite (MFC) made of seven layers (Kapton, acrylic, electrode, piezoceramic fibre and epoxy composite, electrode, acrylic, Kapton) is proposed and used for the characterization of its effective material properties. The methodology is first validated for the MFC active layer only, made of piezoceramic fibre and epoxy, through comparison with previously published analytical results. Then, the methodology is applied to the seven-layer MFC. It is shown that the packaging reduces significantly the shear stiffness of the piezoceramic material and, thus, leads to significantly smaller effective electromechanical coupling coefficient k(15) and piezoelectric stress constant e(15) when compared to the piezoceramic fibre properties. However, it is found that the piezoelectric charge constant d(15) is less affected by the softer layers required by the MFC packaging.

Embedded sensitivity analysis has proven to be a useful tool in finding optimum positions of structure reinforcements. However, it was not clear how sensitivities obtained from the embedded sensitivity method were related to the normal mode, or operational mode, associated to the frequency of interest. In this work, this relationship is studied based on a finite element of a slender sheet metal piece, with preponderant bending modes. It is shown that higher sensitivities always occur at nodes or antinodes of the vibrating system. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4002127]

The machining of hardened steels has always been a great challenge in metal cutting, particularly for drilling operations. Generally, drilling is the machining process that is most difficult to cool due to the tool`s geometry. The aim of this work is to determine the heat flux and the coefficient of convection in drilling using the inverse heat conduction method. Temperature was assessed during the drilling of hardened AISI H13 steel using the embedded thermocouple technique. Dry machining and two cooling/lubrication systems were used, and thermocouples were fixed at distances very close to the hole`s wall. Tests were replicated for each condition, and were carried out with new and worn drills. An analytical heat conduction model was used to calculate the temperature at tool-workpiece interface and to define the heat flux and the coefficient of convection. In all tests using new and worn out drills, the lowest temperatures and decrease of heat flux were observed using the flooded system, followed by the MQL, considering the dry condition as reference. The decrease of temperature was directly proportional to the amount of lubricant applied and was significant in the MQL system when compared to dry cutting. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. There are several tools in the literature that support innovation in organizations. Some of the most cited are the so-called technology roadmapping methods, also known as TRM. However, these methods are designed primarily for organizations that adopt the market pull strategy of technology-product integration. Organizations that adopt the technology push integration strategy are neglected in the literature. Furthermore, with the advent of open innovation, it is possible to note the need to consider the adoption of partnerships in the innovation process. Thus, this study proposes a method of technology roadmapping, identified as method for technology push (MTP), applicable to organizations that adopt the technology push integration strategy, such as SMEs and independent research centers in an open-innovation environment. The method was developed through action-research and was assessed from two analytical standpoints: externally, via a specific literature review on its theoretical contributions, and internally, through the analysis of potential users` perceptions on the feasibility of applying MTP. The results indicate both the unique character of the method and its perceived implementation feasibility. Future research is suggested in order to validate the method in different types of organizations (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article presents an extensive investigation carried out in two technology-based companies of the So Carlos technological pole in Brazil. Based on this multiple case study and literature review, a method, entitled hereafter IVPM2, applying agile project management (APM) principles was developed. After the method implementation, a qualitative evaluation was carried out by a document analysis and questionnaire application. This article shows that the application of this method at the companies under investigation evidenced the benefits of using simple, iterative, visual, and agile techniques to plan and control innovative product projects combined with traditional project management best practices, such as standardization.

An accurate estimate of machining time is very important for predicting delivery time, manufacturing costs, and also to help production process planning. Most commercial CAM software systems estimate the machining time in milling operations simply by dividing the entire tool path length by the programmed feed rate. This time estimate differs drastically from the real process time because the feed rate is not always constant due to machine and computer numerical controlled (CNC) limitations. This study presents a practical mechanistic method for milling time estimation when machining free-form geometries. The method considers a variable called machine response time (MRT) which characterizes the real CNC machine`s capacity to move in high feed rates in free-form geometries. MRT is a global performance feature which can be obtained for any type of CNC machine configuration by carrying out a simple test. For validating the methodology, a workpiece was used to generate NC programs for five different types of CNC machines. A practical industrial case study was also carried out to validate the method. The results indicated that MRT, and consequently, the real machining time, depends on the CNC machine`s potential: furthermore, the greater MRT, the larger the difference between predicted milling time and real milling time. The proposed method achieved an error range from 0.3% to 12% of the real machining time, whereas the CAM estimation achieved from 211% to 1244% error. The MRT-based process is also suggested as an instrument for helping in machine tool benchmarking.

This work presents a non-linear boundary element formulation applied to analysis of contact problems. The boundary element method (BEM) is known as a robust and accurate numerical technique to handle this type of problem, because the contact among the solids occurs along their boundaries. The proposed non-linear formulation is based on the use of singular or hyper-singular integral equations by BEM, for multi-region contact. When the contact occurs between crack surfaces, the formulation adopted is the dual version of BEM, in which singular and hyper-singular integral equations are defined along the opposite sides of the contact boundaries. The structural non-linear behaviour on the contact is considered using Coulomb`s friction law. The non-linear formulation is based on the tangent operator in which one uses the derivate of the set of algebraic equations to construct the corrections for the non-linear process. This implicit formulation has shown accurate as the classical approach, however, it is faster to compute the solution. Examples of simple and multi-region contact problems are shown to illustrate the applicability of the proposed scheme. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper deals with analysis of multiple random crack propagation in two-dimensional domains using the boundary element method (BEM). BEM is known to be a robust and accurate numerical technique for analysing this type of problem. The formulation adopted in this work is based on the dual BEM, for which singular and hyper-singular integral equations are used. We propose an iterative scheme to predict the crack growth path and the crack length increment at each time step. The proposed scheme able us to simulate localisation and coalescence phenomena, which is the main contribution of this paper. Considering the fracture mechanics analysis, the displacement correlation technique is applied to evaluate the stress intensity factors. The propagation angle and the equivalent stress intensity factor are calculated using the theory of maximum circumferential stress. Examples of simple and multi-fractured domains, loaded up to the rupture, are considered to illustrate the applicability of the proposed scheme. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an accurate and efficient solution for the random transverse and angular displacement fields of uncertain Timoshenko beams. Approximate, numerical solutions are obtained using the Galerkin method and chaos polynomials. The Chaos-Galerkin scheme is constructed by respecting the theoretical conditions for existence and uniqueness of the solution. Numerical results show fast convergence to the exact solution, at excellent accuracies. The developed Chaos-Galerkin scheme accurately approximates the complete cumulative distribution function of the displacement responses. The Chaos-Galerkin scheme developed herein is a theoretically sound and efficient method for the solution of stochastic problems in engineering. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fatigue and crack propagation are phenomena affected by high uncertainties, where deterministic methods fail to predict accurately the structural life. The present work aims at coupling reliability analysis with boundary element method. The latter has been recognized as an accurate and efficient numerical technique to deal with mixed mode propagation, which is very interesting for reliability analysis. The coupled procedure allows us to consider uncertainties during the crack growth process. In addition, it computes the probability of fatigue failure for complex structural geometry and loading. Two coupling procedures are considered: direct coupling of reliability and mechanical solvers and indirect coupling by the response surface method. Numerical applications show the performance of the proposed models in lifetime assessment under uncertainties, where the direct method has shown faster convergence than response surface method.
