The kidney's major role in filtration depends on its high blood flow, concentrating mechanisms, and biochemical activation. The kidney's greatest strengths also lead to vulnerability for drug-induced nephrotoxicity and other renal injuries. The current standard to diagnose renal injuries is with a percutaneous renal biopsy, which can be biased and insufficient. In one particular case, biopsy of a kidney with renal cell carcinoma can actually initiate metastasis. Tools that are sensitive and specific to detect renal disease early are essential, especially noninvasive diagnostic imaging. While other imaging modalities (ultrasound and x-ray/CT) have their unique advantages and disadvantages, MRI has superb soft tissue contrast without ionizing radiation. More importantly, there is a richness of contrast mechanisms in MRI that has yet to be explored and applied to study renal disease.

The focus of this work is to advance preclinical imaging tools to study the structure and function of the renal system. Studies were conducted in normal and disease models to understand general renal physiology as well as pathophysiology. This dissertation is separated into two parts--the first is the identification of renal architecture with ex vivo MRI; the second is the characterization of renal dynamics and function with in vivo MRI. High resolution ex vivo imaging provided several opportunities including: 1) identification of fine renal structures, 2) implementation of different contrast mechanisms with several pulse sequences and reconstruction methods, 3) development of image-processing tools to extract regions and structures, and 4) understanding of the nephron structures that create MR contrast and that are important for renal physiology. The ex vivo studies allowed for understanding and translation to in vivo studies. While the structure of this dissertation is organized by individual projects, the goal is singular: to develop magnetic resonance imaging biomarkers for renal system.

The work presented here includes three ex vivo studies and two in vivo studies:

1) Magnetic resonance histology of age-related nephropathy in sprague dawley.

2) Quantitative susceptibility mapping of kidney inflammation and fibrosis in type 1 angiotensin receptor-deficient mice.

3) Susceptibility tensor imaging of the kidney and its microstructural underpinnings.

4) 4D MRI of renal function in the developing mouse.

5) 4D MRI of polycystic kidneys in rapamycin treated Glis3-deficient mice.

This thesis examines the discourse(s) of crisis in the Parsi diaspora. Treating crisis as a common variable, rather than a singular and unique event across various Parsi communities, I investigate the dimensions of crisis that bind separated Parsi communities in anxiety through a shared language, cultural experience, and historical memory. Turning first to India and then Hong Kong as my case studies, I analyze “crisis,” that has often been identified in terms of demographic decay or postcolonial decline, in the context of more subtle debates around racial purity and trust funds. Crisis, for the Parsi diaspora, while indicating a critical moment in the present, also serves to reveal the underlying and pre-existing socio-economic and cultural tensions in the communities. Relying largely on life-story interviews, online blogs and articles, and archival work, I portray the crisis not as a unique and sporadic event, but rather as one of continuity and complexity, albeit manifesting each time in different and unique guises, that continues to disrupt as well as unite the Parsi diaspora today.

A singular perturbation method is applied to a non-conservative system of two weakly coupled strongly nonlinear non-identical oscillators. For certain parameters, localized solutions exist for which the amplitude of one oscillator is an order of magnitude smaller than the other. It is shown that these solutions are described by coupled equations for the phase difference and scaled amplitudes. Three types of localized solutions are obtained as solutions to these equations which correspond to phase locking, phase drift, and phase entrainment. Quantitative results for the phases and amplitudes of the oscillators and the stability of these phenomena are expressed in terms of the parameters of the model.

The problem of inverse diffraction from plane to plane is considered in the case where a finite aperture exists in the boundary plane. Singular values and singular functions for the problem are introduced, and the number of degrees of freedom is defined in terms of the distribution of the singular values. Numerical computations are presented for the one-dimensional problem, and it is shown that the effect of evanescent waves disappears at a distance of approximately one wavelength from the boundary plane, even when the dimension of the slit is comparable with the wavelength of the diffracted field. © 1983 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

For pt.I. see ibid. vol.1, p.301 (1985). In the first part of this work a general definition of an inverse problem with discrete data has been given and an analysis in terms of singular systems has been performed. The problem of the numerical stability of the solution, which in that paper was only briefly discussed, is the main topic of this second part. When the condition number of the problem is too large, a small error on the data can produce an extremely large error on the generalised solution, which therefore has no physical meaning. The authors review most of the methods which have been developed for overcoming this difficulty, including numerical filtering, Tikhonov regularisation, iterative methods, the Backus-Gilbert method and so on. Regularisation methods for the stable approximation of generalised solutions obtained through minimisation of suitable seminorms (C-generalised solutions), such as the method of Phillips (1962), are also considered.

For pt.I see ibid. vol.3, p.195 (1987). The authors have shown that the resolution of a confocal scanning microscope can be improved by recording the full image at each scanning point and then inverting the data. These analyses were restricted to the case of coherent illumination. They investigate, along similar lines, the incoherent case, which applies to fluorescence microscopy. They investigate the one-dimensional and two-dimensional square-pupil problems and they prove, by means of numerical computations of the singular value spectrum and of the impulse response function, that for a signal-to-noise ratio of, say 10%, it is possible to obtain an improvement of approximately 60% in resolution with respect to the conventional incoherent light confocal microscope. This represents a working bandwidth of 3.5 times the Rayleigh limit.

This paper will examine the prominence of Alfred Tennyson's work in several textual accounts of youth penned between 1892 and the present day, by writers including T. S. Eliot, Virgina Woolf, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Kingsley Amis, J. M. Coetzee, William Faulkner and Andrew Motion. The young Woolf broke in her new pens by copying out Tennyson's 'Tithonus'; Eliot had a taste for Tennyson's 'martial and sanguinary poetry; as a young man. Kingsley Amis was singular among his contemporaries precisely because he admired the work of a poet considered outdated, and a reference for Modernist verse over that of Tennyson is seen as a sign of sophistication (however ironically presented) in the writings of people as diverse as Auden, Motion and Coetzee. Whereas the acquisition of a first language is successful for normally developing individuals, native-like attainment in a language learnt as adults is not guaranteed. As far as grammar is concerned, the area that typically shows up as more problematic is that of Morphology, and more specifically, that part of Morphology related to the specific ways languages have to indicate notions like temporal location (e.g. English –-ed for past tense She walked) or person agreement (e.g. English –s for the third person singular She sings). Language students and teachers are familiar with exclamations like “Oh, after so many years I still have problems with the past tenses in Spanish!” or “I cannot cope with the masculine/feminine thing in French!” In this talk I will present two different accounts that are currently debated in the field of Second Language Acquisition about why it is not enough to memorize those “blessed endings” for us to master their use in our speech production. I will also introduce the latest study I have conducted in collaboration with colleagues, with the aim of evaluating the explanatory power of the hypotheses debated in current literature.
