PURPOSE: To implement real-time myocardial strain-encoding (SENC) imaging in combination with tracking the tissue displacement in the through-plane direction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SENC imaging was combined with the slice-following technique by implementing three-dimensional (3D) selective excitation. Certain adjustments were implemented to reduce scan time to one heartbeat. A total of 10 volunteers and five pigs were scanned on a 3T MRI scanner. Spatial modulation of magnetization (SPAMM)-tagged images were acquired on planes orthogonal to the SENC planes for comparison. Myocardial infarction (MI) was induced in two pigs and the resulting SENC images were compared to standard delayed-enhancement (DE) images. RESULTS: The strain values computed from SENC imaging with slice-following showed significant difference from those acquired without slice-following, especially during systole (P < 0.01). The strain curves computed from the SENC images with and without slice-following were similar to those computed from the orthogonal SPAMM images, with and without, respectively, tracking the tag line displacement in the strain direction. The resulting SENC images showed good agreement with the DE images in identifying MI in infarcted pigs. CONCLUSION: Correction of through-plane motion in real-time cardiac functional imaging is feasible using slice-following. The strain measurements are more accurate than conventional SENC measurements in humans and animals, as validated with conventional MRI tagging.

Introduction: THC-COOH has been proposed as a criterion to help to distinguish between occasional from regular cannabis users. However, to date this indicator has not been adequately assessed under experimental and real-life conditions. Methods: We carried out a controlled administration study of smoked cannabis with a placebo. Twenty-three heavy smokers and 25 occasional smokers, between 18 and 30 years of age, participated in this study [Battistella G et al., PloS one. 2013;8(1):e52545]. We collected data from a second real case study performed with 146 traffic offenders' cases in which the whole blood cannabinoid concentrations and the frequency of cannabis use were known. Cannabinoid levels were determined in whole blood using tandem mass spectrometry methods. Results: Significantly high differences in THC-COOH concentrations were found between the two groups when measured during the screening visit, prior to the smoking session, and throughout the day of the experiment. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were determined and two threshold criteria were proposed in order to distinguish between these groups: a free THC-COOH concentration below 3 μg/L suggested an occasional consumption (≤ 1 joint/week) while a concentration higher than 40 μg/L corresponded to a heavy use (≥ 10 joints/month). These thresholds were successfully tested with the second real case study. The two thresholds were not challenged by the presence of ethanol (40% of cases) and of other therapeutic and illegal drugs (24%). These thresholds were also found to be consistent with previously published experimental data. Conclusion: We propose the following procedure that can be very useful in the Swiss context but also in other countries with similar traffic policies: If the whole blood THC-COOH concentration is higher than 40 μg/L, traffic offenders must be directed first and foremost toward medical assessment of their fitness to drive. This evaluation is not recommended if the THC-COOH concentration is lower than 3 μg/L. A THC-COOH level between these two thresholds can't be reliably interpreted. In such a case, further medical assessment and follow up of the fitness to drive are also suggested, but with lower priority.

We present the application of a real-time quantitative PCR assay, previously developed to measure relative telomere length in humans and mice, to two bird species, the zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata and the Alpine swift Apus melba. This technique is based on the PCR amplification of telomeric (TTAGGG)(n) sequences using specific oligonucleotide primers. Relative telomere length is expressed as the ratio (T/S) of telomere repeat copy number (T) to control single gene copy number (S). This method is particularly useful for comparisons of individuals within species, or where the same individuals are followed longitudinally. We used glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) as a single control gene. In both species, we validated our PCR measurements of relative telomere length against absolute measurements of telomere length determined by the conventional method of quantifying telomere terminal restriction fragment (TRF) lengths using both the traditional Southern blot analysis (Alpine swifts) and in gel hybridization (zebra finches). As found in humans and mice, telomere lengths in the same sample measured by TRF and PCR were well correlated in both the Alpine swift and the zebra finch.. Hence, this PCR assay for measurement of bird telomeres, which is fast and requires only small amounts of genomic DNA, should open new avenues in the study of environmental factors influencing variation in telomere length, and how this variation translates into variation in cellular and whole organism senescence.

En este trabajo se evalúan algoritmos heurísticos de exploración de entornos(AED, ANED, SA, TS, GA y GRASP) en la programación de pedidos en unamáquina de la vida real, con el objetivo de minimizar la suma de retrasos . Elcaso estudiado se diferencia de los problemas convencionales en que lostiempos de preparación de las operaciones están separados de los tiempos deprocesamiento y son dependientes de la secuencia. Los resultadoscomputacionales revelan que la Búsqueda Tabú funciona mejor que los otrosalgoritmos aplicados.

In this work annealing and growth of CuInS2 thin films is investigated with quasireal-time in situ Raman spectroscopy. During the annealing a shift of the Raman A1 mode towards lower wave numbers with increasing temperature is observed. A linear temperature dependence of the phonon branch of ¿2 cm¿1/100 K is evaluated. The investigation of the growth process (sulfurization of metallic precursors) with high surface sensitivity reveals the occurrence of phases which are not detected with bulk sensitive methods. This allows a detailed insight in the formation of the CuInS2 phases. Independent from stoichiometry and doping of the starting precursors the CuAu ordering of CuInS2 initially forms as the dominating ordering. The transformation of the CuAu ordering into the chalcopyrite one is, in contrast, strongly dependent on the precursor composition and requires high temperatures.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um método para identificação e monitoramento, em tempo quase real, de áreas agrícolas cultivadas com lavouras temporárias de verão, com uso de imagens orbitais Modis, no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. A metodologia foi denominada detecção de áreas agrícolas em tempo quase real (DATQuaR) e utiliza imagens do sensor Modis referentes aos índices de vegetação (IVs) EVI e NDVI, disponibilizadas em composições de 16 dias. Foram utilizadas quatro métricas para agregar os valores de IVs por pixel, dentro dos períodos bimensais avaliados: média, máximo, mínimo e mediana. Para gerar as imagens (ImDATQuaR), a imagem agregada para o período imediatamente anterior foi subtraída da imagem agregada para o período em monitoramento. Essas imagens foram classificadas por meio de fatiamento e comparadas às classes de referência obtidas pela interpretação visual de pixels aleatorizados em imagens Landsat. Cada ImDATQuaR gerou dois mapas DATQuaR: um com filtragem de moda com janela 3x3 pixels e outro sem filtragem. O melhor mapa DATQuaR é produzido com uso de imagens EVI e filtragem - ao se subtrair a imagem de mínimo valor para o período anterior da imagem de máximo valor para o período monitorado - e atinge concordâncias com a referência superiores a 81%.

Given the low sensitivity of amoebal coculture, we developed a specific real-time PCR for the detection of Parachlamydia. The analytical sensitivity was high, and the inter- and intrarun variabilities were low. When the PCR was applied to nasopharyngeal aspirates, it was positive for six patients with bronchiolitis. Future studies should assess the role of Parachlamydia in bronchiolitis.

Laajojen pintojen kuvaaminen rajoitetussa työskentelytilassa riittävällä kuvatarkkuudella voi olla vaikeaa. Kuvaaminen on suoritettava osissa ja osat koottava saumattomaksi kokonaisnäkymäksi eli mosaiikkikuvaksi. Kuvauslaitetta käsin siirtelevän käyttäjän on saatava välitöntä palautetta, jotta mosaiikkiin ei jäisi aukkoja ja työ olisi nopeaa. Työn tarkoituksena oli rakentaa pieni, kannettava ja tarkka kuvauslaite paperi- ja painoteollisuuden tarpeisiin sekä kehittää palautteen antamiseen menetelmä, joka koostaaja esittää karkeaa mosaiikkikuvaa tosiajassa. Työssä rakennettiin kaksi kuvauslaitetta: ensimmäinen kuluttajille ja toinen teollisuuteen tarkoitetuista osista. Kuvamateriaali käsiteltiin tavallisella pöytätietokoneella. Videokuvien välinen liike laskettiin yksinkertaisella seurantamenetelmällä ja mosaiikkikuvaa koottiin kameroiden kuvanopeudella. Laskennallista valaistuksenkorjausta tutkittiin ja kehitetty menetelmä otettiin käyttöön. Ensimmäisessä kuvauslaitteessa on ongelmia valaistuksen ja linssivääristymien kanssa tuottaen huonolaatuisia mosaiikkikuvia. Toisessa kuvauslaitteessa nämä ongelmat on korjattu. Seurantamenetelmä toimii hyvin ottaen huomioon sen yksinkertaisuuden ja siihen ehdotetaan monia parannuksia. Työn tulokset osoittavat, että tosiaikainen mosaiikkikuvan koostaminen megapikselin kuvamateriaalista on mahdollista kuluttajille tarkoitetulla tietokonelaitteistolla.

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) typically generates the illusion in participants that they are in the displayed virtual scene where they can experience and interact in events as if they were really happening. Teleoperator (TO) systems place people at a remote physical destination embodied as a robotic device, and where typically participants have the sensation of being at the destination, with the ability to interact with entities there. In this paper, we show how to combine IVR and TO to allow a new class of application. The participant in the IVR is represented in the destination by a physical robot (TO) and simultaneously the remote place and entities within it are represented to the participant in the IVR. Hence, the IVR participant has a normal virtual reality experience, but where his or her actions and behaviour control the remote robot and can therefore have physical consequences. Here, we show how such a system can be deployed to allow a human and a rat to operate together, but the human interacting with the rat on a human scale, and the rat interacting with the human on the rat scale. The human is represented in a rat arena by a small robot that is slaved to the human"s movements, whereas the tracked rat is represented to the human in the virtual reality by a humanoid avatar. We describe the system and also a study that was designed to test whether humans can successfully play a game with the rat. The results show that the system functioned well and that the humans were able to interact with the rat to fulfil the tasks of the game. This system opens up the possibility of new applications in the life sciences involving participant observation of and interaction with animals but at human scale.

Työn tavoitteena oli laatia reaaliaikaiset vesi- ja energiatasenäytöt Stora Enso PublicationPaper Veitsiluodon tehtaalle, paperikone 5:lle. Tavoitteena oli myös simuloida kyseisen paperikonelinjan vesitase. Aluksi työssä piirrettiin lohkokaaviot taseita varten paperikoneen kaikista vettä tai energiaa sisältävistä jakeista. Näitä yksinkertaistettuja lohkokaavioita hyväksi käyttäen laadittiin taseidenlaskentakaavat, jotka testattiin tarkastuslaskelmien avulla. Vesi- ja energiataseista tehtiin myös suunnitelmat prosessinohjausjärjestelmän tasenäytöiksi. FlowMac-simulointiohjelmalla rakennetun paperikone 5 vesitaseen simulointimallin tulosten oikeellisuutta arvioitiin herkkyysanalyysin avulla. Tehdyn herkkyysanalyysin tuloksien perusteella voidaan olettaa, että simulointimalli toimii luotettavasti. Tämän vesitaseen simulointimallin avulla tarkasteltiin kiekkosuotimien uudistamisen vaikutuksia paperikonelinjan vesitaseeseen. Tarkastelussa huomattiin, että vaihtamalla kiekkosuotimien syöttöventtiilit kolmea jaetta tuottaviksi, voitaisiin flotaatioallas ja suihkuveden kaarisihti poistaa käytöstä. Tulevaisuudessa simulointimallia voidaan käyttää myös monilla muilla eri tavoin hyödyksi kyseisellä paperikoneella. Työssä laaditut vesi- ja energiataseet saatiin niin tarkoiksi kuin se nykyisiä mittauksia hyödyntäen on mahdollista. Jostaseita haluttaisiin tarkentaa, olisi paperikonelinjalle syytä lisätä joitakin mittauksia. Myös työssä tehty vesitaseen simulointi FlowMac:lla onnistui hyvin mutta kyseisessä ohjelmassa havaittiin silti joitakin kehittämistarpeita. Työn tuloksien perusteella vettä ja energiaa voitaisiin mahdollisesti säästää paperikone 5:llä esimerkiksi laimennussäätöisen perälaatikon avulla, kiekkosuotimien uusimisella sekä kenkäpuristimen käyttöönotolla. Jatkotutkimuskohteita voisivat olla esimerkiksi paperikone 5:n lämpötase, kemiallisesti puhdistetun veden tulolämpötilan nostaminen, hiomon suodosveden ylimääräisen lämmön hyödyntäminen paperikone 5 kirkassuodoksen lämmittämisen jälkeen, lämmön talteenotossa lämmitysvesikennon ja prosessivesikennon järjestyksen vaihtaminen sekä vastaavien vesi- ja energiataseiden laatiminen paperikone 1:lle ja hiomolle.

General Introduction These three chapters, while fairly independent from each other, study economic situations in incomplete contract settings. They are the product of both the academic freedom my advisors granted me, and in this sense reflect my personal interests, and of their interested feedback. The content of each chapter can be summarized as follows: Chapter 1: Inefficient durable-goods monopolies In this chapter we study the efficiency of an infinite-horizon durable-goods monopoly model with a fmite number of buyers. We find that, while all pure-strategy Markov Perfect Equilibria (MPE) are efficient, there also exist previously unstudied inefficient MPE where high valuation buyers randomize their purchase decision while trying to benefit from low prices which are offered once a critical mass has purchased. Real time delay, an unusual monopoly distortion, is the result of this attrition behavior. We conclude that neither technological constraints nor concern for reputation are necessary to explain inefficiency in monopolized durable-goods markets. Chapter 2: Downstream mergers and producer's capacity choice: why bake a larger pie when getting a smaller slice? In this chapter we study the effect of downstream horizontal mergers on the upstream producer's capacity choice. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we find anon-monotonic relationship: horizontal mergers induce a higher upstream capacity if the cost of capacity is low, and a lower upstream capacity if this cost is high. We explain this result by decomposing the total effect into two competing effects: a change in hold-up and a change in bargaining erosion. Chapter 3: Contract bargaining with multiple agents In this chapter we study a bargaining game between a principal and N agents when the utility of each agent depends on all agents' trades with the principal. We show, using the Potential, that equilibria payoffs coincide with the Shapley value of the underlying coalitional game with an appropriately defined characteristic function, which under common assumptions coincides with the principal's equilibrium profit in the offer game. Since the problem accounts for differences in information and agents' conjectures, the outcome can be either efficient (e.g. public contracting) or inefficient (e.g. passive beliefs).

Tämä tutkimus käsittelee teollisuusyrityksen hankintaprosessien parantamista. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisilla toimenpiteillä raakaaineiden ja MRO (maintenance, repair and operating)-tuotteiden hankintaprosesseista saadaan toimivia ja tehokkaita. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan hankintaprosessiin vaikuttavia asioita, erityisesti keskittämistä sekä informaatioteknologiaa, ja tuodaan esille erilaisia hankintaprosessin parantamiseen tähtääviä lähestymistapoja. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tapaustutkimuksena. Empiirinen aineisto kerättiin kohdeyritys M-realilla tehtyjen haastattelujen sekä havainnoinnin avulla. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että raaka-aineiden hankintaprosessia voidaan tehostaa lisäämällä automatiikkaa sekä parantamalla yhteistyötä hankintaprosessiin osallistuvien tahojen kesken. MRO-tuotteiden hankintaa voidaan tehostaa monilla operationaalisilla toimenpiteillä, kuten yksinkertaistamalla hankintaehdotuksen tekemistä. Yhtenä keskeisimpänä tutkimustuloksena on se, että toiminnanohjausjärjestelmä on merkittävimpiä hankintaprosessin parantamista rajoittavia tekijöitä. Merkittävänä tutkimustuloksena voidaan pitää myös sitä, että hankintaprosessin osien keskittämisen myötä kosketus paikallisiin asioihin vähenee, mutta tämä ei ole kuitenkaan ylivoimainen este hankintaprosessin tehokkaalle hoitamiselle. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että informaatioteknologian kehittymisen myötä hankintaprosessi on nopeutunut.
