The modification of ethylene-propylene copolymer (EP) has been accomplished by radical EP-graft-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) has been used to obtain ternary PA/EP/EP-g-AA blends by melt mixing. Different blend morphologies were observed by scanning electron microscopy; the domain size of the EP-dispersed phase in the polyamide 1010 matrix of compatibilized blends decreased compared with that of uncompatibilized blends. It is found that EP-g-AA used as the third component has a profound effect on the mechanical properties of the resulting blends. This behavior has been attributed to serious chemical interactions taking place between the two components. Thermal analysis shows that some thermal properties of PA in compatibilized PA/EP/EP-g-AA changed because of chemical reactions taken place during the blending process. Wide angle x-ray diffraction measurements also confirmed this result. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible LLDPE/PS blends has been studied by means of C-13 CP-MAS NMR and DSC techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/PS blends, and the compatibilizing effect of LLDPE-g-PS on LLDPE/PS blends depends on the PS grafting yield and molecular structure of the compatibilizers and also on the composition of the blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and PS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the noncrystalline region of the LLDPE and PS domain, respectively. Meanwhile, LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, resulting in an obvious change in the crystallization behavior of LLDPE. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of processing conditions on the electrical and dynamic behavior of carbon black (CB) filled ethylene/ethylacrylate copolymer (EEA) composites was investigated. The compounds were prepared by two methods, solution blending and mechanical mixing. Compared with the solution counterpart, the mechanical composites have a strong positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect and a high dynamic elastic modulus, which results from the good dispersion state of carbon black in EEA, i.e. the strong interaction between carbon black and EEA. It can be concluded that the strong interaction between polymer and carbon black is essential for composites to have a high PTC intensity, good electrical reproducibility and high dynamic elastic modulus. With the intention of understanding chemical recycling of waste polymers, various kinds of zeolites were used as catalysts in the pyrolysis of polypropylene (PP). The effects of zeolites on the degradation temperature and pyrolyzed products of PP were studied. It was found that the degradation temperature of PP strongly depended on the type of zeolite used and the amount added. One type of HY zeolite (320HOA) was shown to be a very effective catalyst. Pyrolysis products, which were identified by using a coupled gas-chromatograph-mass-spectrometer, were also affected by the addition of zeolites. Some zeolites did not change the structure of the products but narrowed the product distribution to a smaller molecule region, while the HY zeolite led to hydrocarbons concentrated at those containing 4-9 carbons. Furthermore, some new compounds with cyclic structures were found in the presence of the HY zeolite. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Limited

Epitaxial crystallization behavior of HDPE/iPP double layers under quenching and annealing conditions has been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from bright field TEM observations indicate that in the as-quenched state the HDPE that is in direct contact with the surface of the oriented iPP substrate recrystallizes in the form of oriented crystallites dispersed on the iPP substrate. The electron diffraction results show that besides the two normally observed epitaxial orientations between HDPE and iPP, there is also a special orientation with [001](HDPE)parallel to[001](iPP). The HDPE which is in contact with the clean surface of a glass slide crystallizes in small lamellae with random orientation. In the boundary region, the epitaxially crystallized HDPE small lamellae stop right on the boundary of the oriented iPP film. If the quenched samples are annealed at 128 degrees C (below T-m of HDPE) for 2 h, the small HDPE crystals grow to thick lamellae in both areas. But only the epitaxial orientation of HDPE with [001](HDPE)parallel to[101](iPP) has been observed.

A new amphiphilic polymer i.e., polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted crystalline neoprene, which was used as compatibilizer to improve the compatibility of elastomer and water-absorbent resin, has been investigated. The synthesis was based on the reaction between chlorine in neoprene and sodium salts of PEG. PEGs with molecular weights of 600 and 2000 were used. The grafting percent and the PEG content were calculated through elemental analysis of chlorine in the resulted copolymers. The maximum grafting percent of copolymers was ca. 24.80%. The molecular parameters such as number-average molecular weight and the average number of grafting chains on one CR backbone were also calculated and discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Gel electrolytes were prepared by thermal polymerization of diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DIEGD) or its copolymer with methoxy polyethylene glycol monomethacrylate, molecular weight 400 (PEM(400)), at a molar ratio of 3/1 in the presence of propylene carbonate (PC) and LiClO4. Conductivity was measured by impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the conductivity data follow the Arrhenius equation in the homopolymer gel system, while the VTF equation holds true in the copolymer gel system. An increase in conductivity was observed in the copolymer gel system. However, whether in the homopolymer or in the copolymer gel system, a maximum ambient temperature conductivity was found at a salt concentration near 1.50 mol/l. Further, the activation energy values calculated from Arrhenius plots for the homopolymer gel system tended to reach a minimum value with increasing salt concentration. (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

The synthesis and properties of simultaneously interpenetrating networks (SINs) based on poly(polyethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDA) and epoxy (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) were studied. The effect of compositional variation on the morphology and properties of products was investigated. The swelling coefficient, densities, glass transition behavior, and thermal stability of these interpenetrating networks (IPNs) are discussed. Microphase separation morphological structures were found in all PEGDA/DGEBA IPNs. Decreased swelling ratios compared to the calculated swelling coefficients based on the weight additivity of the components were obtained after the formation of IPNs. Increased density and thermal stability were also obtained in these IPNs, implying the existence of interpenetration (topological entanglements) among the component networks.

Irradiated polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and PA1010 containing 0.5% (wt) heterogeneous nuclei were studied by ESR, WAXD, DSC and the determination of gel fractions. The fold surface of the lamellae plays an important role in the effects of radiation on crystalline PA1010. The results show that the direct radiation effects on both samples vary, while after being heated to 220 degrees C, the final radiation effects are identical, regardless of the difference in the amount of the fold surface of the lamellae. The post-radiation effects result predominantly from the fold surface.

The chemiluminescence (CL) emission from three kinds of polyethylene, HDPE, LLDPE and LDPE, which had been exposed to 80 kGy dose from Co-60 in both air and nitrogen, has been examined. CL measurement was done under both nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere. The results show that the CL emission from irradiated samples does not result from irradiation itself, but from the oxidation reactions occurring during and after irradiation. Addition of 1 phr of an antioxidant, Irganox 1010, can effectively inhibit the radiation induced oxidation in LLDPE and LDPE. In the case of HDPE, however, it was found that pure HDPE has the best resistance to radiation-induced oxidation of the polymers examined in this work. However, incorporation of Irganox 1010 was found to have not only a stabilizing effect against radiation induced oxidation, but also to promote the oxidation in some cases.

The effect of physical aging at 210 degrees C on the mechanical properties of phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PES-C) and a PES-C/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) blend, with 5% content of PPS, were studied using DMA, tensile experiments, an instrumented impact tester, and SEM observations. The blend shows good mechanical properties in comparison with the corresponding PES-C. The mechanical properties of both materials exhibit characteristics of physical aging, with only the aging rate of the blend relatively slower, which should be attributed to the constraint effect of PPS particles and the good interfacial adhesion. The morphology of the PPS phase in the blend did not change with aging time. The principal role of PPS particles is to induce crazes, which dissipate energy, under applied loading; thus, the blend shows good toughness. On the other hand, the multiple crazing mechanism depends on the molecular mobility or structural state of the matrix. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The conductivity mechanism for a carbon black (CB) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) compound was investigated in this work. From the experimental results obtained, it can be seen that the relation between electrical current density (J) and applied voltage across the sample (V) coincides with Simmons's equation (i.e., the electrical resistivity of the compound decreases with the applied voltage, especially at the critical voltage). The minimum electrical resistivity occurs near the glass transition temperature (T-g) of HDPE (198 K). It can be concluded that electron tunneling is an important mechanism and a dominant transport process in the HDPE/CB composite. A new model of carbon black dispersion in the matrix was established, and the resistivity was calculated by using percolation and quantum mechanical theories. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The epitaxial crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene on the boundary of highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates has been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from AFM and TEM indicate that the epitaxial nucleation of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs earlier than that in the pure HDPE phase, i.e., homogeneous nucleation. Therefore the epitaxially grown HDPE lamellae can grow across the boundary of the iPP substrate into the HDPE spherulitic phase with the epitaxial orientation relationship remaining.

The morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/high-density polyethylene (PP/HDPE) blends in a wide range of compositions modified by a sequential Ziegler-Natta polymerization product (PP-PE) have been investigated. PP-PE contains multiple components such as PP, ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPC), and high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE). The effects of PP-PE on the mechanical properties and morphology of the PP/HDPE blends are the aggregative results of all its individual components. Addition of PP-PE to the blends not only improved the tensile strength of the blends, but the elongation at break increased linearly while the moduli were nearly unchanged. Morphological studies show that the adhesion between the two phases in all the blends of different compositions is enhanced and the dispersed domain sizes of the blends are reduced monotonously with the increment of the content of PP-PE. PP-PE has been demonstrated to be a more effective compatibilizer than EPC. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the tensile strength of the blends depends most on the adhesion between the two phases and the elongation at break depends most on the domain size of the dispersed component.
