Tin glycolate particles were prepared by a simple, one-step, polyol-mediated synthesis in air in which tin oxalate precursor was added to ethylene glycol and heated at reflux. Hexagonal-shaped, micron-sized tin glycolate particles were formed when the solution had cooled. A series of tin oxides was produced by calcination of the synthesized tin glycolate at 600-800 degrees C. It was revealed that the micron-sized, hexagonal-shaped tin glycolate now consisted of nanosized tin-based particles (80-120 nm), encapsulated within a tin glycolate shell. XRD, TGA, and FT-IR measurements were conducted to account for the three-dimensional growth of the tin glycolate particles. When applied as an anode material for Li-ion batteries, the synthesized tin glycolate particles showed good electro-chemical reactivity in Li-ion insertion/ deinsertion, retaining a specific capacity of 416mAhg(-1) beyond 50cycles. Ibis performance was significantly better than those of all the other tin oxides nanoparticles (< 160mAhg(-1)) obtained after heat treatment in air. We strongly believe that the buffering of the volume expansion by the glycolate upon Li-Sn alloying is the main factor for the improved cycling of the electrode.

Three D-glucans were isolated from the mycelium of the fungus Botryosphaeria rhodina MAMB-05 by sequential extraction with hot-water and hot aqueous KOH (2% w/v) followed by ethanol precipitation. Following their purification by gel permeation chrornatography on Sepharose CL-4B, the structural characteristics of the D-glucans were determined by FT-IR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and, after methylation, by GC-MS. The hot-water extract produced a fraction designated Q(1A) that was a beta-(1 -> 6)-D-glucan with the following structure:[GRAPHICS]The alkaline extract, when subjected to repeated freeze-thawing, yielded two fractions: KIP (insoluble) that comprised a beta-(1 -> 3)-D-glucan with beta-D-glucose branches at C-6 with the structure:[GRAPHICS]and K1SA (soluble) consisting of a backbone chain of alpha-(1 -> 4)-linked D-glucopyranosyl residues substituted at O-6 with alpha-D-glucopyranosyl residues:[GRAPHICS](c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The structure of the title compound, [RuCl3(NO)(AsPh3)2], has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The ruthenium atom is octahedrally coordinated with the arsine ligands in the trans configuration. The ν(NO) was found at 1869 cm-1 in the IR spectrum, which is consistent with the linearity of the RuNO bond angle. © 1995.

The influence of polymerization on the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors and phase formation was investigated during synthesis of SrTiO3. The precipitation of polymeric precursor in acetone produced a more thermal stable precursor with lower weight loss during decomposition. This more stable precursor retarded the formation of the SrTiO3 phase. From thermal analysis, XRD and FT-IR the presence of an intermediate phase during decomposition of the precursors was observed. This is a mixed (Sr,Ti) carbonate phase with the proposed composition of Sr2Ti2O5.CO3. © 1995.

This work describes a modified sol-gel method for the preparation of V 2O 5/TiO 2 catalysts. The samples have been characterized by N 2 adsorption at 77K, x-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR). The surface area increases with the vanadia loading from 24 m 2 g -1, for pure TiO 2, to 87 m 2 g -1 for 9wt.% of V 2O 5. The rutile form is predominant for pure TiO 2 but became enriched with anatase phase when vanadia loading is increased. No crystalline V 2O 5 phase was observed in the catalysts diffractograms. Two species of surface vanadium observed by FT-IR spectroscopy a monomeric vanadyl and polymeric vanadates, the vanadyl/vanadate ratio remains practically constant.

Tin oxide is the compound more used in the gas sensor production, mainly to reduce gases like CO and H2. Their electrical properties are strongly dependent of its surface. For this is of great importance to synthesize nanoscale tin oxide particles to use they later in the films conformation. The synthesis of SnO2-TiO2 nanoparticles by polymeric precursor method is reported in this work. The particles were characterized by DTA/TG, FT-IR, XRD and SEM. Also, the electrical response of thick films measured under oxygen and carbon monoxide atmospheres is was analyzed.

The cell wall is a rigid structure essential for the survival of fungi. A knowledge of its composition is therefore useful for the development of novel anti-fungal drugs. In this context, polysaccharides as main components of the fungal cell wall have been the subject of intense scientific study over the years. The information gained from the knowledge of the structure of these macrobiomolecules could therefore be valuable in elucidating the mechanisms of their biosynthesis in the cell walls of pathogenic fungi infecting plants and animals alike. Determination of the chemical structures of these polysaccharides (endo) is preceded by their extraction and purification. The extractions, generally lead to neutral and/ or alkaline soluble biopolymers in groups according to their solubilities. Mixtures of polysaccharides in these extracts can then be purified by a combination of chemical and chromatographic methods. Following purification, the polysaccharides, considered homogeneous, can be characterized structurally using conventional techniques of carbohydrate chemistry, such as hydrolysis, methylation analysis, and FT-IR, 13C- and 1H- NMR spectroscopy. This review surveys the main scientific literature that characterizes polysaccharides constituting the fungal cell wall.
