Stable isotopes from a U/Th dated aragonite stalagmite from the Central Kumaun Himalaya provide evidence of variation in climatic conditions in the last similar to 1800 years. The delta O-18 and delta C-13 values vary from -4.3 parts per thousand to -7.6 parts per thousand and -3.4 parts per thousand to -9.1 parts per thousand respectively, although the stalagmite was not grown in isotopic equilibrium with cave drip water, a clear palaeoclimatic signal in stalagmite delta O-18 values is evident based on the regional climate data. The stalagmite showed a rapid growth rate during 830-910 AD, most likely the lower part of Medieval Warm Period (MWP), and 1600-1640 AD, the middle part of Little Ice Age (LIA). Two distinct phases of reduced precipitation are marked by a 2 parts per thousand shift in 8180 values towards the end of MWP (similar to 1080-1160 AD) and after its termination from similar to 1210 to 1440 AD. The LIA (similar to 1440-1880 AD) is represented by sub-tropical climate similar to modern conditions, whereas the post-LIA was comparatively drier. The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) was located over the cave location during wetter/warmer conditions. When it shifted southward, precipitation over the study area decreased. A prominent drop in delta O-18 and delta C-13 values during the post-LIA period may also have been additionally influenced by anthropogenic activity in the area. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA. We demonstrate a unique shear-induced crystallization phenomenon above the equilibrium freezing temperature (T-K(o)) in weakly swollen isotropic (L-i) and lamellar (L-alpha) mesophases with bilayers formed in a cationic-anionic mixed surfactant system. Synchrotron rheological X-ray diffraction study reveals the crystallization transition to be reversible under shear (i.e., on stopping the shear, the nonequilibrium crystalline phase L-c melts back to the equilibrium mesophase). This is different from the shear-driven crystallization below T-K(o), which is irreversible. Rheological optical observations show that the growth of the crystalline phase occurs through a preordering of the L-i phase to an L-alpha phase induced by shear flow, before the nucleation of the Lc phase. Shear diagram of the L-i phase constructed in the parameter space of shear rate ((gamma)) over dot vs. temperature exhibits L-i -> L-c and L-i -> L-alpha transitions above the equilibrium crystallization temperature (T-K(o)), in addition to the irreversible shear-driven nucleation of L-c in the L-i phase below T-K(o). In addition to revealing a unique class of nonequilibrium phase transition, the present study urges a unique approach toward understanding shear-induced phenomena in concentrated mesophases of mixed amphiphilic systems.

A layer-wise theory with the analysis of face ply independent of lamination is used in the bending of symmetric laminates with anisotropic plies. More realistic and practical edge conditions as in Kirchhoff's theory are considered. An iterative procedure based on point-wise equilibrium equations is adapted. The necessity of a solution of an auxiliary problem in the interior plies is explained and used in the generation of proper sequence of two dimensional problems. Displacements are expanded in terms of polynomials in thickness coordinate such that continuity of transverse stresses across interfaces is assured. Solution of a fourth order system of a supplementary problem in the face ply is necessary to ensure the continuity of in-plane displacements across interfaces and to rectify inadequacies of these polynomial expansions in the interior distribution of approximate solutions. Vertical deflection does not play any role in obtaining all six stress components and two in-plane displacements. In overcoming lacuna in Kirchhoff's theory, widely used first order shear deformation theory and other sixth and higher order theories based on energy principles at laminate level in smeared laminate theories and at ply level in layer-wise theories are not useful in the generation of a proper sequence of 2-D problems converging to 3-D problems. Relevance of present analysis is demonstrated through solutions in a simple text book problem of simply supported square plate under doubly sinusoidal load.

Networks such as organizational network of a global company play an important role in a variety of knowledge management and information diffusion tasks. The nodes in these networks correspond to individuals who are self-interested. The topology of these networks often plays a crucial role in deciding the ease and speed with which certain tasks can be accomplished using these networks. Consequently, growing a stable network having a certain topology is of interest. Motivated by this, we study the following important problem: given a certain desired network topology, under what conditions would best response (link addition/deletion) strategies played by self-interested agents lead to formation of a pairwise stable network with only that topology. We study this interesting reverse engineering problem by proposing a natural model of recursive network formation. In this model, nodes enter the network sequentially and the utility of a node captures principal determinants of network formation, namely (1) benefits from immediate neighbors, (2) costs of maintaining links with immediate neighbors, (3) benefits from indirect neighbors, (4) bridging benefits, and (5) network entry fee. Based on this model, we analyze relevant network topologies such as star graph, complete graph, bipartite Turan graph, and multiple stars with interconnected centers, and derive a set of sufficient conditions under which these topologies emerge as pairwise stable networks. We also study the social welfare properties of the above topologies.

A systematic understanding of the noncovalent interactions that influence the structures of the cis conformers and the equilibrium between the cis and the trans conformers, of the X-Pro tertiary amide motifs, is presented based on analyses of H-1-, C-13-NMR and FTIR absorption spectra of two sets of homologous peptides, X-Pro-Aib-OMe and X-Pro-NH-Me (where X is acetyl, propionyl, isobutyryl and pivaloyl), in solvents of varying polarities. First, this work shows that the cis conformers of any X-Pro tertiary amide motif, including Piv-Pro, are accessible in the new motifs X-Pro-Aib-OMe, in solution. These conformers are uniquely observable by FTIR spectroscopy at ambient temperatures and by NMR spectroscopy from temperatures as high as 273 K. This is made possible by the persistent presence of n(i-1i)* interactions at Aib, which also influence the disappearance of steric effects at these cis X-Pro rotamers. Second, contrary to conventional understanding, the energy contribution of steric effects to the cis/trans equilibrium at the X-Pro motifs is found to be nonvariant (0.54 +/- 0.02 kcal/mol) with increase in steric bulk on the X group. Third, the current studies provide direct evidence for the weak intramolecular interactions namely the n(i-1i)*, the N-Pro center dot center dot center dot Hi+1 (C(5)a), and the C-7 hydrogen bond that operate and influence the structures, stabilities, and dynamics between different conformational states of X-Pro tertiary amide motifs. NMR and IR spectral data suggest that the cis conformers of X-Pro motifs are ensembles of short-lived rotamers about the C-X-N-Pro bond. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We undertake a systematic, direct numerical simulation of the twodimensional, Fourier-truncated, Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study the turbulent evolutions of its solutions for a variety of initial conditions and a wide range of parameters. We find that the time evolution of this system can be classified into four regimes with qualitatively different statistical properties. Firstly, there are transients that depend on the initial conditions. In the second regime, powerlaw scaling regions, in the energy and the occupation-number spectra, appear and start to develop; the exponents of these power laws and the extents of the scaling regions change with time and depend on the initial condition. In the third regime, the spectra drop rapidly for modes with wave numbers k > kc and partial thermalization takes place for modes with k < kc; the self-truncation wave number kc(t) depends on the initial conditions and it grows either as a power of t or as log t. Finally, in the fourth regime, complete thermalization is achieved and, if we account for finite-size effects carefully, correlation functions and spectra are consistent with their nontrivial Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless forms. Our work is a natural generalization of recent studies of thermalization in the Euler and other hydrodynamical equations; it combines ideas from fluid dynamics and turbulence, on the one hand, and equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical mechanics on the other.

A Frictionally constrained condition implies dependence of friction force on tangential displacement amplitude. The condition may occur due to chemical, physical, and/or mechanical interaction between the contacting surfaces. The condition, sometimes also referred to as the presliding condition or partial slip condition, is characterized under fretting. Under such conditions, various experimental studies indicate the existence of two distinguishable regions, that is, stick region and slip region. In the present study, frictionally constrained conditions are identified and the evolutions of stick-slip regions are investigated in detail. Investigations have been performed on self-mated stainless steel and chromium carbide coated surfaces mated against stainless steel, under both vacuum and ambient conditions. Contact conditions prevailing at the contact interface were identified based on the mechanical responses and were correlated with the surface damage observed. Surface degradation has been observed in the form of microcracks and material transfer. Detailed numerical analysis has also been performed in order to understand the energy dissipation and the damage mode involved in the surface or subsurface damage. It has been observed that under frictionally constrained conditions, the occurrence of annular slip features are mainly due to the junction growth, resulting from elastic-plastic deformation at the contact interface. Ratcheting has been observed as the governing damage mode under cyclic tangential loading condition.

In this work, we present a study on the negative differential resistance (NDR) behavior and the impact of various deformations (like ripple, twist, wrap) and defects like vacancies and edge roughness on the electronic properties of short-channel MoS2 armchair nanoribbon MOSFETs. The effect of deformation (3 degrees-7 degrees twist or wrap and 0.3-0.7 angstrom ripple amplitude) and defects on a 10 nm MoS2 ANR FET is evaluated by the density functional tight binding theory and the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. We study the channel density of states, transmission spectra, and the I-D-V-D characteristics of such devices under the varying conditions, with focus on the NDR behavior. Our results show significant change in the NDR peak to valley ratio and the NDR window with such minor intrinsic deformations, especially with the ripple. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The paper focuses on the use of oxygen and steam as the gasification agents in the thermochemical conversion of biomass to produce hydrogen rich syngas, using a downdraft reactor configuration. Performance of the reactor is evaluated for different equivalence ratios (ER), steam to biomass ratios (SBR) and moisture content in the fuel. The results are compared and evaluated with chemical equilibrium analysis and reaction kinetics along with the results available in the literature. Parametric study suggests that, with increase in SBR, hydrogen fraction in the syngas increases but necessitates an increase in the ER to maintain reactor temperature toward stable operating conditions. SBR is varied from 0.75 to 2.7 and ER from 0.18 to 0.3. The peak hydrogen yield is found to be 104g/kg of biomass at SBR of 2.7. Further, significant enhancement in H-2 yield and H-2 to CO ratio is observed at higher SBR (SBR=1.5-2.7) compared with lower range SBR (SBR=0.75-1.5). Experiments were conducted using wet wood chips to induce moisture into the reacting system and compare the performance with dry wood with steam. The results clearly indicate the both hydrogen generation and the gasification efficiency ((g)) are better in the latter case. With the increase in SBR, gasification efficiency ((g)) and lower heating value (LHV) tend to reduce. Gasification efficiency of 85.8% is reported with LHV of 8.9MJNm(-3) at SBR of 0.75 compared with 69.5% efficiency at SBR of 2.5 and lower LHV of 7.4 at MJNm(-3) at SBR of 2.7. These are argued on the basis of the energy required for steam generation and the extent of steam consumption during the reaction, which translates subsequently in the LHV of syngas. From the analysis of the results, it is evident that reaction kinetics plays a crucial role in the conversion process. The study also presents the importance of reaction kinetics, which controls the overall performance related to efficiency, H-2 yield, H-2 to CO fraction and LHV of syngas, and their dependence on the process parameters SBR and ER. The present paper discusses the effect of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the structural relaxation and the intermolecular cooperativity in dynamically asymmetric blends of PS/PVME (polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)). The temperature regime where chain connectivity effects dominate the thermodynamic concentration fluctuation (T/T-g > 0.75, T-g is the glass transition temperature of the blends) was studied using dielectric spectroscopy (DS). Interestingly, in the blends with MWNTs a bimodal distribution of relaxation was obtained in the loss modulus spectra. This plausibly is due to different environments experienced by the faster component (PVME) in the presence of MWNTs. The segmental dynamics of PVME was observed to be significantly slowed down in the presence of MWNTs and an Arrhenius-type behavior, weakly dependent on temperature, is observed at higher frequencies. This non-equilibrium dynamics of PVME is presumed to be originating from interphase regions near the surface of MWNTs. The length scale of the cooperative rearranging region (xi CRR) at T-g, assessed by calorimetric measurements, was observed to be higher in the case of blends with MWNTs. An enhanced molecular level miscibility driven by MWNTs in the blends corroborates with the larger xi CRR and comparatively more number of segments in CRR (in contrast to neat blends) around T-g. The configurational entropy and length scale of the cooperative volume was mapped as a function of temperature in the temperature regime, Tg < T < T-g + 60 K. The blends phase separated by spinodal decomposition which further led to an interconnected PVME network in PS. This further led to materials with very high electrical conductivity upon demixing.

Methane and ethane are the simplest hydrocarbon molecules that can form clathrate hydrates. Previous studies have reported methods for calculating the three-phase equilibrium using Monte Carlo simulation methods in systems with a single component in the gas phase. Here we extend those methods to a binary gas mixture of methane and ethane. Methane-ethane system is an interesting one in that the pure components form sII clathrate hydrate whereas a binary mixture of the two can form the sII clathrate. The phase equilibria computed from Monte Carlo simulations show a good agreement with experimental data and are also able to predict the sI-sII structural transition in the clathrate hydrate. This is attributed to the quality of the TIP4P/Ice and TRaPPE models used in the simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The performance of a building integrated photovoltaic system (BIPV) has to be commendable, not only on the electrical front but also on the thermal comfort front, thereby fulfilling the true responsibility of an energy providing shelter. Given the low thermal mass of BIPV systems, unintended and undesired outcomes of harnessing solar energy - such as heat gain into the building, especially in tropical regions - have to be adequately addressed. Cell (module) temperature is one critical factor that affects both the electrical and the thermal performance of such installations. The current paper discusses the impact of cell (module) temperature on both the electrical efficiency and thermal comfort by investigating the holistic performance of one such system (5.25 kW(p)) installed at the Centre for Sustainable Technologies in the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Some recommendations (passive techniques) for improving the performance and making BIPV structures thermally comfortable have been listed out. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The(1-x) BiFeO3-(x) PbTiO3 solid solution exhibiting a Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB) has attracted considerable attention recently because of its unique features such as multiferroic, high Curie point (T-C similar to 700 degrees C) and giant tetragonality (c/a -1 similar to 0.19). Different research groups have reported different composition range of MPB for this system. In this work we have conclusively proved that the wide composition range of MPB reported in the literature is due to kinetic arrest of the metastable rhombohedral phase and that if sufficient temperature and time is allowed the metastable phase disappears. The genuine MPB was found to be x=0.27 for which the tetragonal and the rhombohedral phases are in thermodynamic equilibrium. In-situ high temperature structural study of x=0.27 revealed the sluggish kinetics associated with the temperature induced structural transformation. Neutron powder diffraction study revealed that themagnetic ordering at room temperature occurs in the rhombohedral phase. The magnetic structure was found to be commensurate G-type antiferromagnetic with magnetic moments parallel to the c-direction (of the hexagonal cell). The present study suggests that the equilibrium properties in this solid solution series should be sought for x=0.27.

Strong atmospheric turbulence is a major hindrance in wireless optical communication systems. In this paper, the performance of a wireless optical communication system is analyzed using different modulation formats such as, binary phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (BPSK-SIM), differential phase shift keying (DPSK), differential phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (DPSK-SIM), Mary pulse position modulation (M-PPM) and polarization shift keying (PoISK). The atmospheric channel is modeled for strong atmospheric turbulences with combined effect of turbulence and pointing errors. Novel closed-form analytical expressions for average bit error rate (BER), channel capacity and outage probability for the various modulation techniques, viz. BPSK-SIM, DPSK, DPSK-SIM, PoISK and M-PPM are derived. The simulated results for BER, channel capacity and outage probability of various modulation techniques are plotted and analyzed. A new C-0 composite plate finite element based on Reddy's third order theory is used for large deformation dynamic analysis of delaminated composite plates. The inter-laminar contact is modeled with an augmented Lagrangian approach. Numerical results show that the widely used ``unconditionally stable'' beta-Newmark method presents instability problems in the transient simulation of delaminated composite plate structures with large deformation. To overcome this instability issue, an energy and momentum conserving composite implicit time integration scheme presented by Bathe and Baig is used. It is found that a proper selection of the penalty parameter is very crucial in the contact simulation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
