The effect of pore structure on the behavior of lithium intercalation into an electrode containing porous V(2)O(5) film has been investigated and compared with the electrode containing a non-porous V(2)O(5) film. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a lamellar structure for both materials. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms, t-plot method, and Scanning Electronic Microscopy show that the route employed for the preparation of mesoporous V(2)O(5) was successful. The electrochemical performance of these matrices as lithium intercalation cathode materials was evaluated. The porous material reaches stability after several cycles more easily compared with the V(2)O(5) xerogel. Lithium intercalation into the porous V(2)O(5) film electrode is crucially influenced by pore surface and film surface irregularity, in contrast with the non-porous surface of the V(2)O(5) xerogel.

The mineralogy and origin of micas were investigated in incipient soils surrounding a modem alkaline-saline lake of Nhecolandia, a sub-region of Pantanal wetland. Soils were sampled along a toposequence and analyzed by XRD, TEM-EDS, and ICP-MS. The studied micas, mainly concentrated in a green horizon, are dioctahedral, strongly associated with Fe(3+) and Al, and interstratified with smectite layers. Classification of individual crystals shows that glauconite and Fe-illite are the dominant micas, but one crystal of illite was recognized. Si-rich amorphous materials are associated with small crystallites in the mica-enriched horizon. A recent study shows that water samples from the studied lake and the surrounding water table have high pH, negative Eh, temperatures up to 40 C. high concentration of K. and low concentration of Si(OH)(4). Experimental studies of micas synthesis reported in the literature show that similar water conditions allow for dioctahedral mica crystallization from initial precipitation of amorphous hydroxides. Therefore, water characteristics combined with presence of Si-rich amorphous materials in the mica-enriched horizon suggest that the micas of the study area are neoformed. The alternated origin of illite, glauconite, and Fe-illite mixed-layer minerals probably occurs due to seasonal variations of pH. temperature, and chemical composition of waters in microenvironments, since the changes at this scale are possibly faster and more extreme. In sub-humid South India, recent studies have shown that black soil areas (Vertisols and vertic Intergrades), located on flat valley bottoms, have been rejuvenated through the incision of streambeds, inducing changes in the pedoclimate and soil transformation. Joint pedological, geochemical and geophysical investigations were performed in order to better understand the ongoing processes and their contribution to the chemistry of local rivers. The seasonal rainfall causes cycles of oxidation and reduction in a perched watertable at the base of the black soil, while the reduced solutions are exported through a loamy sand network. This framework favours a ferrolysis process, which causes low base saturation and protonation of clay, leading to the weathering of 2:1 then 1:1 clay minerals. Maximum weathering conditions occur at the very end of the wet season, just before disappearance of the perched watertable. Therefore, the by-products of soil transformation are partially drained off and calcareous nodules, then further downslope, amorphous silica precipitate upon soil dehydration. The ferrolysed area is fringing the drainage system indicating that its development has been induced by the streambed incision. The distribution of (14)C ages of CaCO(3) nodules suggests that the ferrolysis process started during the late Holocene, only about 2 kyr B.P. at the studied site and about 5 kyr B.P. at the watershed outlet. The results of this study are applied to an assessment of the physical erosion rate (4.8x10(-3) m/kyr) since the recent reactivation of the erosion process. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Joint pedological, geochemical, hydrological and geophysical investigations were performed to study the coexistence or saline and freshwater lakes in close proximity and similar climatic conditions in the Nhecolandia region, Pantanal wetlands in Brazil. The saline lakes are concentrically surrounded by green sandy loam horizons, which cause differential hydrological regimes. Mg-calcite, K-silicates, and amorphous silica precipitate in the soil cover, whereas Mg-silicates and more soluble Na-carbonates are concentrated in the topsoil along the shore of the saline lake. In saline solutions, some minor elements (As, Se) reach values above the water quality recommendations, whereas others are controlled and incorporated in solid phases (Ba, Sr). Locally, the destruction of the sandy loam horizons generates very acidic soil solution (pH similar to 3.5) through a process not yet understood. The soil distributions indicate that some freshwater lakes are former saline lakes. They are invaded by freshwater after destruction of the sandy loam green horizons, then the freshwater becomes enriched in K(+), SO(4)(2-), Fe, Al, and a stream of minor and trace elements. Stickiness is a major reason that limits the spray drying of various sugar-rich food products. Higher hygroscopicity of amorphous powder, increase in solubility of sugars with temperature, and lower melting point and glass transition temperature, contribute to the stickiness problem. So far, the glass transition temperature has been widely accepted as a best indicator for stickiness. There are various manoeuvres that have been applied to spray dry such products. Some of them are the addition of drying aids, modification of drier design and use of mild drying temperature conditions. This review paper highlights the major research works that deal with the stickiness property of sugar-rich foods.

The synthesis of chromium carbides, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2, by mechanically allowing chromium and carbon powders has been investigated. Milling conditions were found to have a strong influence on the evolution of microstructure, with high collision energies being required to form carbide phases. Milling at intermediate energy levels resulted in the formation of an amorphous phase, and with low energy conditions only grain size refinement of Cr occurred with no evidence of any reaction between Cr and C. The amorphous phase was found to be the precursor to carbide formation. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

This paper describes the application of two relatively new diagnostic techniques for the determination of insulation condition in aged transformers. The techniques are (a) measurements of interfacial polarization spectra by a DC method and (b) measurements of molecular weight and its distribution by gel permeation chromatography. Several other electrical properties of the cellulose polymer were also investigated. Samples were obtained from a retired power transformer and they were analysed by the developed techniques. Six distribution transformers were also tested with the interfacial polarization spectra measurement technique, and the molecular weight of paper/pressboard samples from these transformers were also measured by the gel permeation chromatography. The variation of the results through different locations in a power transformer is discussed in this paper. The possible correlation between different measured properties was investigated and discussed in this paper.

OBJECTIVE: We report our results using Onyx HD-500 (Micro Therapeutics, Inc., Irvine, CA) in the endovascular treatment of wide-neck intracranial aneurysms, which have a high rate of incomplete occlusion and recanalization with platinum coils. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with 84 aneurysms were treated. Most of the aneurysms were located in the anterior circulation (80 of 84 aneurysms), were unruptured (74 of 84 aneurysms), and were incidental. Ten presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage, and 15 were symptomatic. All aneurysms had wide necks (neck >4 mm and/or dome-to-neck ratio <1.5). Fifty aneurysms were small (<12 mm), 30 were large (12 to <25 mm) and 4 were giant. Angiographic follow-up was available for 65 of the 84 aneurysms at 6 months, for 31 of the 84 aneurysms at 18 months, and for 5 of the 84 aneurysms at 36 months. RESULTS: Complete aneurysm occlusion was seen in 65.5% of aneurysms on immediate control, in 84.6% at 6 months, and in 90.3% at 18 months. The rates of complete occlusion were 74%, 95.1%, and 95.2% for small aneurysms and 53.3%, 70%, and 80% for large aneurysms at the same follow-up periods. Progression from incomplete to complete occlusion was seen in 68.2% of all aneurysms, with a higher percentage in small aneurysms (90.9%). Aneurysm recanalization was observed in 3 patients (4.6%), with retreatment in 2 patients (3.3%). Procedural mortality was 2.9%. Overall morbidity was 7.2%. CONCLUSION: Onyx embolization of intracranial wide-neck aneurysms is safe and effective. Morbidity and mortality rates are similar to those of other current endovascular techniques. Larger samples and longer follow-up periods are necessary.

Objective: To develop a new endoscopic approach to the correction of a myelomeningocele-like defect in fetal sheep. Methods: The fetuses of 9 pregnant ewes, with an average gestational age of 115 days, were subjected to a 3.0 x 2.0 cm removal of the skin over the lumbar spine, performed through hysterotomy. The uterus was closed, and three 5-mm endoscopic cannulas, without valve mechanisms, were inserted. In the pilot phase (2 animals), we initially worked exclusively in the amniotic fluid space. In the study phase, we partially withdrew the fetus from the amniotic fluid to completely expose its back. By simply allowing air to enter the amniotic cavity (without gas injection), a working space was created using a uterine lift device. The skin around the defect was dissected, and a biosynthetic cellulose material was applied to cover the area. A continuous suture of the skin was performed to completely hide the material. Results: The combined air/fluid space allowed the skin to be successfully closed in 6 out of 7 cases in the study phase. All fetuses were alive at the end of the procedures. Time to complete the endoscopic part of the procedure fell from 3 to 1 h by the end of this series. Premature birth occurred in 2 of the 4 cases allowed to continue with the pregnancy. Conclusion: A new gasless fetoscopic surgery technique was developed as an alternative to current techniques used for fetal endoscopic surgery. Copyright (C) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel.

Objective: To assess the ability of a three-layer graft in the closuse of large fetal skin defects. Methods: Ovine fetuses underwent a large (4 x 3 cm) full-thickness skin defect over the lumbar region at 105 days` gestation (term = 140 days). A bilaminar artificial skin was placed over a cellulose interface to cover the defect (3-layer graft). The skin was partially reapproximated with a continuous nylon suture. Pregnancy was allowed to continue and the surgical site was submitted to histopathological analysis at different post-operative intervals. Results: Seven fetuses underwent surgery. One maternal/fetal death occurred, and the remaining 6 fetuses were analyzed. Artificial skin adherence to the wound edges was observed in cases that remained in utero for at least 15 days. Neoskin was present beneath the silicone layer of the bilaminar artificial skin. Conclusions: Our study shows that neoskin can develop in the fetus using a 3-layer graft, including epidermal growth beneath the silicone layer of the bilaminar skin graft. These findings suggest that the fetus is able to reepithelialise even large skin defects. Further experience is necessary to assess the quality of this repair.

The objective of this study was to extend the previous work of indirect oral rabies immunization of vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) maintained in captivity, which demonstrated the immunogenicity of the V-RG vaccine (Vaccinia-Rabies Glycoprotein) and indicated that although the results had been encouraging, a new method for concentrating the vaccine should be tested in order to avoid vaccine loss and increase the survival proportion of bats after rabies challenge. In this study, three groups of seven bats each were tested with vaccine concentrated by ultrafiltration through a cellulose membrane. The vaccine was homogenized in Vaseline paste and applied to the back of one vector bat, which was then reintroduced into its group. A dose of 10(5.0) MICLD50 rabies virus was used by intramuscular route to challenge the bats postvaccination. We compared the lignin contents of tropical forages by different analytical methods and evaluated their correlations with parameters related to the degradation of neutral detergent fiber (NDF). The lignin content was evaluated by five methods: cellulose solubilization in sulfuric acid [Lignin (sa)], oxidation with potassium permanganate [Lignin (pm)], the Klason lignin method (KL), solubilization in acetyl bromide from acid detergent fiber (ABLadf) and solubilization in acetyl bromide from the cell wall (ABLcw). Samples from ten grasses and ten legumes were used. The lignin content values obtained by gravimetric methods were also corrected for protein contamination, and the corrected values were referred to as Lignin (sa)p, Lignin (pm)p and KLp. The indigestible fraction of NDF (iNDF), the discrete lag (LAG) and the fractional rate of degradation (kd) of NDF were estimated using an in vitro assay. Correcting for protein resulted in reductions (P < 0.05) in the lignin contents as measured by the Lignin (sa), Lignin (pm) and, especially, the KL methods. There was an interaction (P < 0.05) of analytical method and forage group for lignin content. In general, LKp method provided the higher (P < 0.05) lignin contents. The estimates of lignin content obtained by the Lignin (sa)p, Lignin (pm)p and LKp methods were associated (P > 0.05) with all of the NDF degradation parameters. However, the strongest correlation coefficients for all methods evaluated were obtained with Lignin (pm)p and KLp. The lignin content estimated by the ABLcw method did not correlate (P > 0.05) with any parameters of NDF degradation. There was a correlation (P < 0.05) between the lignin content estimated by the ABLadf method and iNDF content. Nonetheless, this correlation was weaker than those found with gravimetric methods. From these results, we concluded that the gravimetric methods produce residues that are contaminated by nitrogenous compounds. Adjustment for these contaminants is suggested, particularly for the KL method, to express lignin content with greater accuracy. The relationships between lignin content measurements and NDF degradation parameters can be better determined using KLp and Lignin (pm)p methods. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Altered expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) components has been reported in several pathologies; however, few ECM proteins have been evaluated in adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT). The aim of this study was to analyze the expression and distribution of the ECM proteoglycans: biglycan and decorin; and glycoproteins: osteonectin, osteopontin, bone sialoprotein and osteocalcin in the AOT. Three-micrometer sections from paraffin-embedded specimens were evaluated employing a streptavidin-biotin immunohistochemical method with the antibodies against the proteins previously cited. Only the osteonectin was expressed in the epithelial cells. The eosinophilic amorphous material and the connective tissue showed expression of all components studied. The calcification foci expressed only osteopontin. In conclusion, the low expression of the components studied in neoplastic epithelial cells suggests that the epithelial cells act probably as stimulators of the expression by the stroma, which in turn can act as agonist or antagonist of the tumor growth. These results suggest that the components studied probably have a key role in the biological behavior of the AOT.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors reduce dentine erosion. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of the supplementation of soft drinks with green tea extract, a natural inhibitor of MMPs, on their erosive potential against dentine. Methods: For each drink tested (Coca-Cola (TM), Kuat (TM) guarana, Sprite (TM) and light Coca-Cola (TM)), 40 dentine specimens were divided into two subgroups differing with respect to supplementation with green tea extract at 1.2% (OM24 (R), 100% Camellia sinensis leaf extract, containing 30 +/- 3% of catechin; Omnimedica, Switzerland) or not (control). Specimens were subjected to four pH cycles, alternating de-and remineralization in one day. For each cycle, samples were immersed in pure or supplemented drink (10 minutes, 30 mL per block) and in artificial saliva (60 minutes, 30 mL per block) at 37 degrees C, under agitation. Dentine alterations were determined by profilometry (mu m). Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni`s test (p < 0.05). Results: A significant difference was observed among the drinks tested with Sprite (TM) leading to the highest surface loss and light Coca-Cola (TM) to the lowest. Supplementation with green tea extract reduced the surface loss by 15% to 40% but the difference was significant for Coca-Cola (TM) only. Conclusions: Supplementation of soft drinks with green tea extract might be a viable alternative to reduce their erosive potential against dentine.

We report biogenic magnetite whiskers, with axial ratios of 6: 1, elongated in the [1 1 1]. [1 1 2] and [1 0 0] directions, resembling the magnetite whiskers detected in the Martian meteorite ALH84001 by Bradley ct nl., and interpreted by those authors as evidence of vapour-phase (abiogenic) growth. Magnetosomal whiskers with extended defects consistent with screw dislocations and magnetosomes resembling flattened twinned platelets, as well as other twinning phenomena and other structural defects, are also reported here. Magnetosomes with teardrop-shaped. cuboidal. irregular and jagged structures similar to those detected in ALH84001 by McKay et al.. coprecipitation of magnetite possibly with amorphous calcium carbonate, coprecipitation of magnetite possibly with amorphous silica, the incorporation of titanium in volutin inclusions and disoriented arrays of magnetosomes are also described. These observations demonstrate that the structures of the magnetite particles in ALH84001. their spatial arrange ment and coprecipitation with carbonates and proximity to silicates are consistent with being biogenic. Electron-beam-induced flash-melting of magnetosomes produced numerous screw dislocations in the (1 1 1). (1 0 0) and (1 1 0) lattice planes and induced fusion of platelets. From this, the lack of screw dislocations reported in the magnetite particles in ALH84001 (McKay et al.. and Bradley et al.) indicates that they have a low-temperature origin.
