Optimum growth requirements of nitrifying consortia developed from treated sewage

The optimum growth requirements of two nitrifying consortia developed from treated sewage by enrichment technique were determined by a series of experiments. There was total inhibition of nitrification at above 2.75 g r' NH/- Nand 2.5g r' N02' - N and the ammonia oxidizing consortium preferred a pH at 8.5 and the nitrite oxidizing consortium a pH of 7.5 as the optima for nitrification. Optimum temperatures were between 20° and 30°C for both the groups. As the rate of airnow was increased from I to 7 Ilmin, the build-up of N02- -N increased 10-fold and the consumption of N02- -N increased by a factor of 28.8 implying that the ammonia oxidizing consortium in a bioreactor required three times more aeration than that for nitrite oxidizers for ex pressing their full nitrifying potential. These data directly contribute for developing a fermentati on process for the mass production of nitrifiers as well as for designing bio reactors for nitrifying sewage.

Comparative efficacy of MS-222 and benzocaine as anaesthetics under simulated transport conditions of a tropical ornamental fish Puntius filamentosus(Valenciennes)

There is a growing commercial interest in the ¢sh, Puntius ¢lamentosus, in the ornamental ¢sh trade in India and elsewhere.The trade is, however, hampered by severe mortalities during transport of the ¢sh owing to insu⁄cient data available on the use of anaesthetics. To resolve this problem, we evaluated the e⁄cacy of two anaesthetics, MS-222 and benzocaine, in sedating P. ¢lamentosus in simulated transportation experiments and used stress response parameters such as cortisol and blood glucose levels to perform assessments. We observed that MS-222 at 40 mg L 1 and benzocaine at 20mg L 1 were su⁄- cient to induce sedation for 48 h. Above these concentrations, both the anaesthetics adversely a¡ected the ¢sh and resulted inmortalities. Both anaesthetics signi¢cantly lowered the blood cortisol and glucose levels compared with the unsedated controls. Importantly, the anaesthetics treatment signi¢cantly lowered the post-transport mortality in the ¢sh. The results of the study show that MS-222 and benzocaine could be used as sedatives to alleviate transport- related stress in P. ¢lamentosus to improve their post-transport survival and hence reduce economic loss.

Guía que pretende informar y sensibilizar sobre la importancia de promocionar la salud bucodental desde edades tempranas, dirigida a profesionales, cuidadores y padres. A través de pequeñas informaciones teóricas ilustradas con fotografías se ofrece una relación de las patologías más frecuentes a estas edades y las pautas para la correcta higiene bucodental que las previene, evitando los malos hábitos en alimentación e higiene.

Clima organizacional en Colombia El IMCOC : un método de análisis para su intervención

En este libro el autor compila conceptos sobre clima organizacional formulados por autores reconocidos; los agrupa e identifica coincidencias, diferencias, componentes y variables. Además, hace un análisis comparativo con el IMCOC (Instrumento para Medir Clima en Organizaciones Colombianas), herramienta diseñada por el autor y aplicada con estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado de la Facultad de Administración de la Universidad del Rosario y en trabajos de consultoría. Este estudio muestra los resultados de la aplicación del IMCOC, en el período comprendido entre 1980 y 2005, en 176 empresas de diferentes sectores y tamaños en Colombia. Como resultado de esto, el autor concluye que el clima percibido por los empleados en las empresas colombianas se explica en el contexto de la cultura organizacional, que resulta de la aplicación de un determinado modelo administrativo. Finalmente, propone lineamientos generales que permitan hacer intervenciones al interior de las empresas, orientadas al mejoramiento del clima organizacional que se diagnostica.

Vegetative and reproductive morphology of Kallymenia patens (Kallymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) in the Mediterranean Sea

Reproductive morphology of the Mediterranean red alga Kallymenia patens is described for the first time, confirming its position in the genus. K. patens is characterized by a non-procarpic female reproductive apparatus, carpogonial branch systems consisting of supporting cells bearing both three-celled carpogonial branches and subsidiary cells that lack a hypogynous cell and carpogonium; fusion cells develop numerous connecting filaments, and tetrasporangia are scattered over the thallus and are probably cruciately divided. Old fertile spathulate specimens of K. patens are morphologically similar to K. spathulata, but they can be distinguished by the length of spathulated proliferations (up to 0.6 cm and 6 cm, respectively), the length of inner cortical cells (up to 70 and 30 μm, respectively), and the gonimoblast location (in proliferations from the perennial part of the blade and over all the thallus surface, respectively)
