A growing American-born Muslim population warrants the attention of educators in schools across the U.S. Educating teachers about Islam will prepare them to address the needs of Muslim students. This paper discusses the rationale for improving awareness of Islam and provides basic concepts necessary for education of the Islamic culture.

The Food Service Industry: Beliefs Held by Academics

In his study - The Food Service Industry: Beliefs Held by Academics - by Jack Ninemeier, Associate Professor, School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management at Michigan State University, Associate Professor Ninemeier initially describes his study this way: “Those in the academic sector exert a great deal of influence on those they are training to enter the food service industry. One author surveyed educational institutions across the country to ascertain attitudes of teachers toward various segments of the industry.” Those essential segments of the industry serve as the underpinnings of this discussion and are four-fold. They are lodging, institutional, multi-unit, and single-unit properties. For each segment the analysis addressed factors relating to Marketing, management and operating concerns: Marketing, operations, fiscal management, innovation, future of the segment Employee-related concerns: quality of work life, training/education opportunities, career opportunities The study uses a survey of academicians as a guide; they point to segments of the food service industry students might be inclined to enter, or even ignore. The survey was done via a questionnaire sent from the campus of the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management at Michigan State University to 1850 full-time faculty members in two and four-year hospitality programs in the United States. Through the survey, Ninemeier wishes to reasonably address specific problems now confronting the food service industry. Those problems include but are not limited to: reducing employee turnover, retaining staff, increasing productivity and revenue, and attracting new staff. “Teachers in these programs are, therefore, an important plank in industry's platform designed to recruit students with appropriate background knowledge and interest in their operations,” Ninemeier says. Your author actually illustrates the survey results, in table form. The importance to an employee, of tangibles and intangibles such as morale, ego/esteem, wages, and benefits are each explored through the survey. According to the study, an interesting dichotomy exists in the institutional property element. Although, beliefs the academics hold about the institutional element suggest that it offers low job stress, attractive working conditions, and non-demanding competitive pressures, the survey and Ninemeier also observe: “Academics do not believe that many of their graduates will enter the institutional segment.” “If academic beliefs are incorrect, an educational program to educate academics about management and employee opportunities in the segment may be in order,” Ninemeier waxes philosophically.

Hydrogel formulation for enhanced regeneration in cell transplantation

Myocardial cell transplantation can compensate for the loss of necrotic cardiomyocytes. The objective of this research study was to reformulate the hydrogel with concentrations of growth factors, such as Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF), Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), and Interleukin-6 (IL-6). A controlled delivery system of PEO-PPO-PEO was formulated for release of a single growth factor and of multiple growth factors. Cytotoxicity and proliferation assay for single growth factors starting with 4000 skeletal myoblasts yielded their highest proliferation at 4 days with HGF (25,500 cells) and LIF (42,000 cells), while IL-6 (115,000 cells) generated its highest proliferation at 5 days. Combination of LIF and IL-6 resulted in highest proliferation at day 2 (220,000 cells), HGF and LIF (108,000 cells), and HGF and IL-6 (80,000 cells) both at 5 days. Viability at 37°C was maintained during the five days at 98-99%. The formulation was successful in myotube formation while maintaining a high purity of myoblasts in culture. The new formulation induced controlled release of growth factors and skeletal myoblasts delivery under favorable conditions while increasing the proliferation of myoblasts.

Investigation of molecular mechanisms of lkb1 function in dictyostelium development and stress responses and the function of superoxide dismutase c (sodc) in chemotaxis

The serine/threonine kinase LKB1 is a regulator of critical events including development and stress responses in metazoans. The current study was undertaken to determine the function of LKB1 in Dictyostelium. During multicellular development and in response to stress insult, an apparent increase in the DdLKB1 kinase activity was observed. Depletion of DdLKB1 with a knockdown construct led to aberrant development; a severe reduction in prespore cell differentiation and a precocious induction of prestalk cells, which were reminiscent of cells lacking GSK3, a well known cell-fate switch. Furthermore, DdLKB1 depleted cells displayed lower GSK3 activity than wild type cells in response to cAMP stimulation during development and failed to activate AMPK, a well known LKB1 target in mammals, in response to cAMP and stress insults. These results suggest that DdLKB1 positively regulates both GSK3 and AMPK during Dictyostelium development, and DdLKB1 is necessary for AMPK activation during stress response regulation. No apparent GSK3 activation was observed in response to stress insults. Spatial and temporal regulation of phosphatidylinositol-(3,4,5)-triphosphate (PIP3) along the membrane of polarized cells is important for efficient chemotaxis. A REMI screen for PIP3 suppressors in the absence of stimulation led to the identification of SodC as PIP3 regulator. Consistent with their higher PIP3 levels, sodC- cells showed defects in chemotaxis and exhibited higher intra-cellular superoxide levels. Protein localization studies along with observations from GPI specific PI-PLC treatment of wild-type cells suggested that SodC is a GPI anchored outer-membrane protein. SodC showed superoxide dismutase activity in vitro, and motility defects of sodC- cells can be rescued by expressing the intact SodC but not by the mutant SodC, which has point mutations that affect its dismutase function. Treatment of sodC- cells with LY294002, a pharmacological inhibitor of PI3K, partially rescued the polarization and chemoattractant sensing defects but not motility defects. Consistent with increased intracellular superoxide levels, sodC- cells also exhibited higher basal Ras activity, an upstream regulator of PI3K, which can be suppressed by a cell permeable superoxide scavenger, XTT, indicating that SodC is important in regulation of intracellular superoxide levels thereby regulating the Ras activity and PIP3 levels at the membrane.

Systematic Molecular Phenotyping: A Path Toward Precision Emergency Medicine?

Precision medicine is an emerging approach to disease treatment and prevention that considers variability in patient genes, environment, and lifestyle. However, little has been written about how such research impacts emergency care. Recent advances in analytical techniques have made it possible to characterize patients in a more comprehensive and sophisticated fashion at the molecular level, promising highly individualized diagnosis and treatment. Among these techniques are various systematic molecular phenotyping analyses (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics). Although a number of emergency physicians use such techniques in their research, widespread discussion of these approaches has been lacking in the emergency care literature and many emergency physicians may be unfamiliar with them. In this article, we briefly review the underpinnings of such studies, note how they already impact acute care, discuss areas in which they might soon be applied, and identify challenges in translation to the emergency department (ED). While such techniques hold much promise, it is unclear whether the obstacles to translating their findings to the ED will be overcome in the near future. Such obstacles include validation, cost, turnaround time, user interface, decision support, standardization, and adoption by end-users.

Palliser Rockslide cosmogenic 36Cl exposure ages (raw data) and erosion effect on the cosmogenic

This paper presents the results of a combined study, using cosmogenic 36Cl exposure dating and terrestrial digital photogrammetry, of the Palliser Rockslide located in the southeastern Canadian Rocky Mountains. This site is particularly well-suited to demonstrate how this multi-disciplinary approach can be used to differentiate distinct rocksliding events, estimate their volume, and establish their chronology and recurrence interval. Observations suggest that rocksliding has been ongoing since the late Pleistocene deglaciation. Two major rockslide events have been dated at 10.0 ± 1.2 kyr and 7.7 ± 0.8 kyr before present, with failure volumes of 40 Mm3 and 8 Mm3, respectively. The results have important implications concerning our understanding of the temporal distribution of paraglacial rockslides and rock avalanches; they provide a better understanding of the volumes and failure mechanisms of recurrent failure events; and they represent the first absolute ages of a prehistoric high magnitude event in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
