In India, directed research on penaeid prawn nutrition was taken up only recently when the aquaculture of prawns gained momentum. One of the important penaeid prawns sought for culture and has great potential is Penagus indiggs, H.Milne Edwards. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute working on different aspects of culture of this species over the past one and half decades, has developed a hatchery technology for mass production of its seed and has suggested several improvements on its farming in the grow-out systems. One of the areas of active research in this direction has been on the nutrition of the species with a view to develop suitable feed not only for hatchery production of seed, but also in the field culture. As part of this investigation, the present study, on the evaluation of different protein and carbohydrate sources and mineral requirements for the juvenile E, indicus was taken up and the results obtained are embodied in the thesis

Aim: To develop a new medium for enhanced production of biomass of an aquaculture probiotic Pseudomonas MCCB 103 and its antagonistic phenazine compound, pyocyanin. Methods and Results: Carbon and nitrogen sources and growth factors, such as amino acids and vitamins, were screened initially in a mineral medium for the biomass and antagonistic compound of Pseudomonas MCCB 103. The selected ingredients were further optimized using a full-factorial central composite design of the response surface methodology. The medium optimized as per the model for biomass contained mannitol (20 g l)1), glycerol (20 g l)1), sodium chloride (5 g l)1), urea (3Æ3 g l)1) and mineral salts solution (20 ml l)1), and the one optimized for the antagonistic compound contained mannitol (2 g l)1), glycerol (20 g l)1), sodium chloride (5Æ1 g l)1), urea (3Æ6 g l)1) and mineral salts solution (20 ml l)1). Subsequently, the model was validated experimentally with a biomass increase by 19% and fivefold increase of the antagonistic compound. Conclusion: Significant increase in the biomass and antagonistic compound production could be obtained in the new media. Significance and Impact of the Study: Media formulation and optimization are the primary steps involved in bioprocess technology, an attempt not made so far in the production of aquaculture probiotics

The fertility of the coastal and estuarine waters is of great concern because of its influence on the productivity of these waters. Seasonal variations in the distribution of organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in the sediments of Kuttanad Waters, a part of the tropical Cochin Estuary on the south west coast of India, are examined to identify the contribution of sediments to the fertility of the aquatic systems. The adjoining region has considerable agricultural activity. The fresh water zones had higher quantities of silt and clay whereas the estuarine zone was more sandy. Organic carbon, total phosphorus and total nitrogen were higher in the fresh water zones and lower in the estuarine zones. Total phosphorus and organic carbon showed the lowest values during monsoon periods. No significant trends were observed in the seasonal distributions of total nitrogen. Ratios of C/N, C/P and N/P, and the phosphorus and nitrogen content indicate significant modification in the character of the organic matter. Substantial amounts of the organic matter can contribute to reducing conditions and modify diagenetic processes

Phosphorus fractionation was employed to find the bioavailability of phosphorus and its seasonal variations in the Panangad region of Cochin estuary, the largest estuarine system in the southwest coast of India. Sequential extraction of the surficial sediments using chelating agents was taken as a tool for this. Phosphate in the water column showed seasonal variations, with high values during the monsoon months, suggesting external runoff. Sediment texture was found to be the main factor influencing the spatial distribution of the geochemical parameters in the study region. Similarly, total phosphorus also showed granulometric dependence and it ranged between 319.54 and 2,938.83 μg/g. Calcium-bound fraction was the main phosphorus pool in the estuary. Significant spatial variations were observed for all bioavailable fractions; iron-bound inorganic phosphorus (5.04–474.24 μg/g), calcium-bound inorganic phosphorus (11.16–826.09 μg/g), and acidsoluble organic phosphorus (22.22–365.86 μg/g). Among the non-bioavailable phosphorus, alkalisoluble organic fraction was the major one (51.92– 1,002.45 μg/g). Residual organic phosphorus was K. R. Renjith (B) · N. Chandramohanakumar · M. M. The paper investigates the feasibility of implementing an intelligent classifier for noise sources in the ocean, with the help of artificial neural networks, using higher order spectral features. Non-linear interactions between the component frequencies of the noise data can give rise to certain phase relations called Quadratic Phase Coupling (QPC), which cannot be characterized by power spectral analysis. However, bispectral analysis, which is a higher order estimation technique, can reveal the presence of such phase couplings and provide a measure to quantify such couplings. In the present study diversity of E. coli in the water samples of Cochin estuary were studied for a period of 3 years ranging from January 2010- December 2012. The stations were selected based on the closeness to satellite townships and waste input. Two of the stations (Chitoor and Thevara) were fixed upstream, two in the central part of the estuary namely Bolgatty and Off Marine Science Jetty, and one at the Barmouth. Diversity was assessed in terms of serotypes, phylogenetic groups and genotypes. Two groups of seafood samples such as fish and shellfish collected from the Cochin estuary were used for isolation of E. coli. One hundred clinical E. coli isolates were collected from one public health centre, one hospital and five medical labs in and around Cochin City, Kerala. From our results it was clear that pathogen cycling is occurring through food, water and clinical sources. Pathogen cycling through food is very common and fish and shellfish that harbour these strains might pose potential health risk to consumer. Estuarine environment is a melting pot for various kinds of wastes, both organic and inorganic. Mixing up of waste water from various sources such as domestic, industries, hospitals and sewage released into these water bodies resulting in the co-existence of E. coli from various sources thus offering a conducive environment for horizontal gene transfer. Opportunistic pathogens might acquire genes for drug resistance and virulence turning them to potential pathogens. Prevalence of ExPEC in the Cochin estuary, pose threat to people who use this water for fishing and recreation. Food chain also plays an important role in the transit of virulence genes from the environments to the human. Antibiotic resistant E. coli are widespread in estuarine water, seafood and clinical samples, for reasons well known such as indiscriminate use of antibiotics in animal production systems, aquaculture and human medicine. Since the waste water from these sources entering the estuary provides selection pressure to drug resistant mutants in the environment. It is high time that the authorities concerned should put systems in place for monitoring and enforcement to curb such activities. Microbial contamination can limit people’s enjoyment of coastal waters for contact recreation or shellfish-gathering. E. coli can make people sick if they are present in high levels in water used for contact recreation or shellfish gathering. When feeding, shellfish can filter large volumes of seawater, so any microorganisms present in the water become accumulated and concentrated in the shellfish flesh. If E. coli contaminated shellfish are consumed the impact to human health includes gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and bacteraemia. In conclusion, the high prevalence of various pathogenic serotypes and phylogenetic groups, multidrug-resistance, and virulence factor genes detected among E. coli isolates from stations close to Cochin city is a matter of concern, since there is a large reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes and virulence traits within the community, and that the resistance genes and plasmid-encoded genes for virulence were easily transferable to other strains. Given the severity of the clinical manifestations of the disease in humans and the inability and/or the potential risks of antibiotic administration for treatment, it appears that the most direct and effective measure towards prevention of STEC and ExPEC infections in humans and ensuring public health may be considered as a priority.

Wenn man die Existenz von physikalischen Mechanismen ignoriert, die für die Struktur hydrologischer Zeitreihen verantwortlich sind, kann das zu falschen Schlussfolgerungen bzgl. des Vorhandenseins möglicher Gedächtnis (memory) -Effekte, d.h. von Persistenz, führen. Die hier vorgelegte Doktorarbeit spürt der niedrigfrequenten klimatischen Variabilität innerhalb den hydrologischen Zyklus nach und bietet auf dieser "Reise" neue Einsichten in die Transformation der charakteristischen Eigenschaften von Zeitreihen mit einem Langzeitgedächtnis. Diese Studie vereint statistische Methoden der Zeitreihenanalyse mit empirisch-basierten Modelltechniken, um operative Modelle zu entwickeln, die in der Lage sind (1) die Dynamik des Abflusses zu modellieren, (2) sein zukünftiges Verhalten zu prognostizieren und (3) die Abflusszeitreihen an unbeobachteten Stellen abzuschätzen. Als solches präsentiert die hier vorgelegte Dissertation eine ausführliche Untersuchung zu den Ursachen der niedrigfrequenten Variabilität von hydrologischen Zeitreihen im deutschen Teil des Elbe-Einzugsgebietes, den Folgen dieser Variabilität und den physikalisch basierten Reaktionen von Oberflächen- und Grundwassermodellen auf die niedrigfrequenten Niederschlags-Eingangsganglinien. Die Doktorarbeit gliedert sich wie folgt: In Kapitel 1 wird als Hintergrundinformation das Hurst Phänomen beschrieben und ein kurzer Rückblick auf diesbezügliche Studien gegeben. Das Kapitel 2 diskutiert den Einfluss der Präsenz von niedrigfrequenten periodischen Zeitreihen auf die Zuverlässigkeit verschiedener Hurst-Parameter-Schätztechniken. Kapitel 3 korreliert die niedrigfrequente Niederschlagsvariabilität mit dem Index der Nord-Atlantischen Ozillations (NAO). Kapitel 4-6 sind auf den deutschen Teil des Elbe-Einzugsgebietes fokussiert. So werden in Kapitel 4 die niedrigfrequenten Variabilitäten der unterschiedlichen hydro-meteorologischen Parameter untersucht und es werden Modelle beschrieben, die die Dynamik dieser Niedrigfrequenzen und deren zukünftiges Verhalten simulieren. Kapitel 5 diskutiert die mögliche Anwendung der Ergebnisse für die charakteristische Skalen und die Verfahren der Analyse der zeitlichen Variabilität auf praktische Fragestellungen im Wasserbau sowie auf die zeitliche Bestimmung des Gebiets-Abflusses an unbeobachteten Stellen. Kapitel 6 verfolgt die Spur der Niedrigfrequenzzyklen im Niederschlag durch die einzelnen Komponenten des hydrologischen Zyklus, nämlich dem Direktabfluss, dem Basisabfluss, der Grundwasserströmung und dem Gebiets-Abfluss durch empirische Modellierung. Die Schlussfolgerungen werden im Kapitel 7 präsentiert. In einem Anhang werden technische Einzelheiten zu den verwendeten statistischen Methoden und die entwickelten Software-Tools beschrieben.

Das Grünbuch 2006 der Europäischen Kommission "Eine Europäische Strategie für nachhaltige, wettbewerbsfähige und sichere Energie" unterstreicht, dass Europa in ein neues Energie-Zeitalter eingetreten ist. Die vorrangigen Ziele europäischer Energiepolitik müssen Nachhaltigkeit, Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Versorgungssicherheit sein, wobei sie eine zusammenhängende und logische Menge von Taktiken und Maßnahmen benötigt, um diese Ziele zu erreichen. Die Strommärkte und Verbundnetze Europas bilden das Kernstück unseres Energiesystems und müssen sich weiterentwickeln, um den neuen Anforderungen zu entsprechen. Die europäischen Stromnetze haben die lebenswichtigen Verbindungen zwischen Stromproduzenten und Verbrauchern mit großem Erfolg seit vielen Jahrzehnten gesichert. Die grundlegende Struktur dieser Netze ist entwickelt worden, um die Bedürfnisse großer, überwiegend auf Kohle aufgebauten Herstellungstechnologien zu befriedigen, die sich entfernt von den Verbraucherzentren befinden. Die Energieprobleme, denen Europa jetzt gegenübersteht, ändern die Stromerzeugungslandschaft in zwei Gesichtspunkten: die Notwendigkeit für saubere Kraftwerkstechnologien verbunden mit erheblich verbesserten Wirkungsgraden auf der Verbraucherseite wird es Kunden ermöglichen, mit den Netzen viel interaktiver zu arbeiten; andererseits müssen die zukünftigen europaweiten Stromnetze allen Verbrauchern eine höchst zuverlässige, preiswerte Energiezufuhr bereitstellen, wobei sowohl die Nutzung von großen zentralisierten Kraftwerken als auch kleineren lokalen Energiequellen überall in Europa ausgeschöpft werden müssen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird darauf hingewiesen, dass die Informationen, die in dieser Arbeit dargestellt werden, auf aktuellen Fragen mit großem Einfluss auf die gegenwärtigen technischen und wirtschaftspolitischen Diskussionen basieren. Der Autor hat während der letzten Jahre viele der hier vorgestellten Schlussfolgerungen und Empfehlungen mit Vertretern der Kraftwerksindustrie, Betreibern von Stromnetzen und Versorgungsbetrieben, Forschungsgremien und den Regulierungsstellen diskutiert. Die folgenden Absätze fassen die Hauptergebnisse zusammen: Diese Arbeit definiert das neue Konzept, das auf mehr verbraucherorientierten Netzen basiert, und untersucht die Notwendigkeiten sowie die Vorteile und die Hindernisse für den Übergang auf ein mögliches neues Modell für Europa: die intelligenten Stromnetze basierend auf starker Integration erneuerbarer Quellen und lokalen Kleinkraftwerken. Das neue Modell wird als eine grundlegende Änderung dargestellt, die sich deutlich auf Netzentwurf und -steuerung auswirken wird. Sie fordert ein europäisches Stromnetz mit den folgenden Merkmalen: – Flexibel: es erfüllt die Bedürfnisse der Kunden, indem es auf Änderungen und neue Forderungen eingehen kann – Zugänglich: es gestattet den Verbindungszugang aller Netzbenutzer besonders für erneuerbare Energiequellen und lokale Stromerzeugung mit hohem Wirkungsgrad sowie ohne oder mit niedrigen Kohlendioxidemissionen – Zuverlässig: es verbessert und garantiert die Sicherheit und Qualität der Versorgung mit den Forderungen des digitalen Zeitalters mit Reaktionsmöglichkeiten gegen Gefahren und Unsicherheiten – Wirtschaftlich: es garantiert höchste Wirtschaftlichkeit durch Innovation, effizientes Energiemanagement und liefert „gleiche Ausgangsbedingungen“ für Wettbewerb und Regulierung. Es beinhaltet die neuesten Technologien, um Erfolg zu gewährleisten, während es die Flexibilität behält, sich an weitere Entwicklungen anzupassen und fordert daher ein zuversichtliches Programm für Forschung, Entwicklung und Demonstration, das einen Kurs im Hinblick auf ein Stromversorgungsnetz entwirft, welches die Bedürfnisse der Zukunft Europas befriedigt: – Netztechnologien, die die Stromübertragung verbessern und Energieverluste verringern, werden die Effizienz der Versorgung erhöhen, während neue Leistungselektronik die Versorgungsqualität verbessern wird. Es wird ein Werkzeugkasten erprobter technischer Lösungen geschaffen werden, der schnell und wirtschaftlich eingesetzt werden kann, so dass bestehende Netze Stromeinleitungen von allen Energieressourcen aufnehmen können. – Fortschritte bei Simulationsprogrammen wird die Einführung innovativer Technologien in die praktische Anwendung zum Vorteil sowohl der Kunden als auch der Versorger stark unterstützen. Sie werden das erfolgreiche Anpassen neuer und alter Ausführungen der Netzkomponenten gewährleisten, um die Funktion von Automatisierungs- und Regelungsanordnungen zu garantieren. – Harmonisierung der ordnungspolitischen und kommerziellen Rahmen in Europa, um grenzüberschreitenden Handel von sowohl Energie als auch Netzdienstleistungen zu erleichtern; damit muss eine Vielzahl von Einsatzsituationen gewährleistet werden. Gemeinsame technische Normen und Protokolle müssen eingeführt werden, um offenen Zugang zu gewährleisten und den Einsatz der Ausrüstung eines jeden Herstellers zu ermöglichen. – Entwicklungen in Nachrichtentechnik, Mess- und Handelssystemen werden auf allen Ebenen neue Möglichkeiten eröffnen, auf Grund von Signalen des Marktes frühzeitig technische und kommerzielle Wirkungsgrade zu verbessern. Es wird Unternehmen ermöglichen, innovative Dienstvereinbarungen zu benutzen, um ihre Effizienz zu verbessern und ihre Angebote an Kunden zu vergrößern. Schließlich muss betont werden, dass für einen erfolgreichen Übergang zu einem zukünftigen nachhaltigen Energiesystem alle relevanten Beteiligten involviert werden müssen.

Little is known about the residual effects of crop residue (CR) and phosphorus (P) application on the fallow vegetation following repeated cultivation of pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] in the Sahel. The objective of this study, therefore, was (i) to measure residual effects of CR, mulched at annual rates of 0, 500, 1000 and 2000 kg CR ha^-1, broadcast P at 0 and 13 kg P ha^-1 and P placement at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 kg P ha^-1 on the herbaceous dry matter (HDM) 2 years after the end of the experiment and (ii) to test a remote sensing method for the quantitative estimation of HDM. Compared with unmulched plots, a doubling of HDM was measured in plots that had received at least 500 kg CR ha^-1. Previous broadcast P application led to HDM increases of 14% compared with unfertilised control plots, whereas no residual effects of P placement were detected. Crop residue and P treatments caused significant shifts in flora composition. Digital analysis of colour photographs taken of the fallow vegetation and the bare soil revealed that the number of normalised green band pixels averaged per plot was highly correlated with HDM (r=0.86) and that red band pixels were related to differences in soil surface crusting. Given the traditional use of fallow vegetation as fodder, the results strongly suggest that for the integrated farming systems of the West African Sahel, residual effects of soil amendments on the fallow vegetation should be included in any comprehensive analysis of treatment effects on the agro-pastoral system.
Efficient phosphorus application strategies for increased crop production in sub-Saharan West Africa

Comparable data are lacking from the range of environments found in sub-Saharan West Africa to draw more general conclusions about the relative merits of locally available rockphosphate (RockP) in alleviating phosphorus (P) constraints to crop growth. To fill this gap, a multi-factorial field experiment was conducted over 4 years at eight locations in Niger, Burkina Faso and Togo. These ranged in annual rainfall from 510 to 1300 mm. Crops grown were pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and maize (Zea mays L.) either continuously or in rotation with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata Walp.) and groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Crops were subjected to six P fertiliser treatments comprising RockP and soluble P at different rates and combined with 0 and 60 kg N ha^-1. For legumes, time trend analyses showed P-induced total dry matter (TDM) increases between 28 and 72% only with groundnut. Similarly, rotation-induced raises in cereal TDM compared to cereal monoculture were only observed with groundnut. For cereals, at the same rate of application, RockP was comparable to single superphosphate (SSP) only at two millet sites with topsoil pH-KCl <4.2 and annual average rainfall >600 mm. Across the eight sites NPK placement at 0.4 g P per hill raised average cereal yields between 26 and 220%. This was confirmed in 119 on-farm trials revealing P placement as a promising strategy to overcome P deficiency as the regionally most growth limiting nutrient constraint to cereals.

Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major constraint to pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) growth on acid sandy soils of the West African Sahel. To develop cost-effective fertilization strategies for cash poor farmers, experiments with pearl millet were conducted in southwestern Niger. Treatments comprised single superphosphate hill-placed at rates of 1, 3, 5 or 7 kg P ha^−1 factorially combined with broadcast P at a rate of 13 kg ha^−1. Nitrogen was applied as calcium ammonium nitrate at rates of 30 and 45 kg ha^−1. At low soil moisture, placement of single superphosphate in immediate proximity to the seed reduced seedling emergence. Despite these negative effects on germination, P placement resulted in much faster growth of millet seedlings than did broadcast P. With P application, potassium nutrition of millet was improved and seedling nitrogen uptake increased two- to three-fold, indicating that nitrogen was not limiting early millet growth. Averaged over the 1995 and 1996 cropping seasons, placed applications of 3, 5 and 7 kg P ha^−1 led to 72%, 81% and 88% respectively, of the grain yield produced by broadcasting 13 kg P ha^−1. Nitrogen application did not show major effects on grain yield unless P requirements were met. A simple economic analysis revealed that the profitability of P application, defined as additional income per unit of fertilizer, was highest for P placement at 3 and 5 kg ha^−1.

This work is concerned with finite volume methods for flows at low mach numbers which are under buoyancy and heat sources. As a particular application, fires in car tunnels will be considered. To extend the scheme for compressible flow into the low Mach number regime, a preconditioning technique is used and a stability result on this is proven. The source terms for gravity and heat are incorporated using operator splitting and the resulting method is analyzed.

In the tropics, a large number of smallholder farms contribute significantly to food security by raising pigs and poultry for domestic consumption and for sale on local markets. The high cost and, sometimes, the lack of availability of commercial protein supplements is one of the main limitations to efficient animal production by smallholders. Locally-grown forages and grain legumes offer ecological benefits such as nitrogen fixation, soil improvement, and erosion control which contribute to improve cropping efficiency. Besides these agronomical assets, they can be used as animal feeds in mixed farming systems. In this paper we review options to include locally-grown forages and grain legumes as alternative protein sources in the diets of pigs and poultry in order to reduce farmers’ dependence on externally-purchased protein concentrates. The potential nutritive value of a wide range of forages and grain legumes is presented and discussed. The influence of dietary fibre and plant secondary metabolites contents and their antinutritive consequences on feed intake, digestive processes and animal performances are considered according to the varying composition in those compounds of the different plant species and cultivars covered in this review. Finally, methods to overcome the antinutritive attributes of the plant secondary metabolites using heat, chemical or biological treatment are reviewed regarding their efficiency and their suitability in low input farming systems.
