Objective and design: To determine the expression pattern and distribution of the glucocorticoid-inducible protein annexin 1 (ANXA1) in a murine model of chronic granulomatous inflammation.Materials or subjects: TO Mouse.Treatment: Chronic granulomatous inflammation was induced by injecting into dorsal sub-cutaneous air-pouches in mice, a mixture of croton oil and Freund's complete adjuvant (CO/FCA).Methods: Western and northern analysis, corticosterone assay, and immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA followed by Tukey's pair-wise comparisons or Dunnett's multiple comparisons. Results: ANXA1 protein levels changed significantly throughout the 4-week time course, with an initial peak at day 7 and a later elevation at 28 days. ANXA1 mRNA levels peaked at days 1 and 3, with a significant decline at day 7 followed by an upward trend to day 28. Plasma corticosterone measurements taken throughout the time course revealed an increase from 14 days onward, suggesting that corticosterone does not influence ANXA1 expression during the initial stages of the model. Immunogold staining revealed that ANXA1 expression in the inflamed tissue was mainly in extravasated neutrophils, with intact protein (37 kDa) being predominantly observed on the cell membrane. Conclusions: the pattern of ANXA1 expression indicates that infiltrated neutrophils are responsible for the majority of ANXA1 present both at early and later stages of this model of granulomatous inflammation.

This paper presents a study about the role of grammar in on-line interactions conducted in Portuguese and in English, between Brazilian and English-speaking interactants, with the aim of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language (PFL). The interactions occurred by means of chat and the MSN Messenger, and generated audio and video data for language analysis. Grammar is dealt with from two perspectives, an inductive and a deductive approach, so as to investigate the relevance of systematization of grammar rules in the process of learning PFL in teletandem interactions.

Experiments were performed to determine the mechanism by which recombinant bovine interferon-alpha(I)1 (rbIFN-alpha) causes an acute reduction in plasma concentrations of progesterone. In experiment 1, administration of a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor blocked rbIFN-alpha-induced hyperthermia but did not prevent the decline in plasma concentrations of progesterone. The decline in progesterone concentrations caused by rbIFN-alpha was, therefore, not a direct consequence of the associated hyperthermia or of pathways mediated through prostaglandin synthesis. It is also unlikely that rbIFN-alpha acts to increase the clearance of progesterone since injection of rbIFN-alpha did not decrease plasma concentrations of progesterone in ovariectomized cows given an intravaginal implant of progesterone (experiment 2). In experiment 3, rbIFN-alpha did not affect basal and LH-induced release of progesterone from cultured luteal slices, indicating that rbIFN-alpha is unlikely to affect luteal function directly. Injection of rbIFN-alpha did, however, cause a decrease in plasma concentrations of LH in ovariectomized cows (experiment 4) that coincided temporally with the decrease in progesterone concentrations seen in cows having a functional corpus luteum. The present results strongly suggest that rbIFN-alpha acts to reduce secretion of progesterone by interfering with pituitary support for luteal synthesis of progesterone. The finding that rbIFN-alpha can inhibit LH secretion implies that interferon-alpha molecules should be considered among the cytokines that can regulate hypothalamic or pituitary function.

The placental vasculature of five hystricomorph rodents was examined by latex injection of the blood vessels, immunohistochemistry and scanning electron microscopy of vessel casts. The pattern of branching of the vessels is described at the level of fine structure. The placenta is divided into lobes separated by interlobular trophoblast. Fetal arteries course through the interlobular areas and give rise to capillaries from which blood drains into veins at the centre of the lobes. Maternal blood reaches the placenta through spiral arteries that pass around the perimeter of the subplacenta. They supply large maternal blood sinuses, lined by trophoblast, which run through the interlobular areas and into the centre of the lobes. Here they supply fine channels that run parallel to the fetal capillaries, so that maternal blood flows from the centre of the lobe to the periphery. This arrangement provides the morphological basis for countercurrent exchange. The maternal channels of the labyrinth drain into spaces formed by the latticework of the interlobular trophoblast and thence through venous lacunae to a basal venous lacunar ring. The subplacenta is supplied by a single fetal artery. The vessels within the subplacenta pursue a tortuous course with dilatations and constrictions as in an endocrine gland. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. A review of the literature showed that the Bálint's syndrome is due to bilateral parieto-occipital lesions. In the present report, the authors describe a case of Bálint's syndrome which appeared after several simple partial epileptic seizures related to a right parietal localization. The benign course with full recovery is an example of the fact that the Bálint's syndrome may be related to reversible functional alterations of the cerebral cortex.

Purpose: To describe alterations observed in patients with congenital clinical anophthalmia and the occurrence of association with other ocular and extra ocular abnormalities. Methods: An observational retrospective study was conducted evaluating 12 patients with congenital clinical anophthalmia at Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu-UNESP, between 1992 and 2005. In those patients it was observed the ocular abnormalities, severity, laterality, follow-up and to systemic abnormalities associated. The congenital clinical anophthalmia have been associated to major severity abnormalities extra-oculars, mainly when the anophthalmia was bilateral, such agenesis of corpus callosum, others craniofacial anomalies and cardiac defects. In the cases unilateral, the alteration associated more frequently was the facial asymmetry, showing the direct correlation between anophthalmos and development of orbit and face. Conclusion: There was relation between congenital clinical anophthalmia and ocular abnormally and extra-ocular abnormally. Patients with bilateral anophthalmos disease have more severe alterations. anophthalmia congenital attends a course with abnormalities of development of the face.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, a dimorphic fungus, prevalent in tropical and subtropical America. It is rare in the United States of America, Canada, Asia and Europe and in these countries it is related to immigrants from endemic areas. Paracoccidioidomycosis associated with immunosuppression runs a course with rapid progression and dissemination of the disease, with many cutaneous lesions. The mortality rate is up to 35% when associated with HIV infection or AIDS. The diagnosis depends on visualization of the agent through direct examination, histopathology, or culture. First choice treatment is done with Amphotericin B deoxycholate. Itraconazole is an option for long term treatment. Sporotrichosis is caused by Sporothrix schenckii, the species of reference. Other species have been considered such as: Sporothrix brasiliensis, S.globosa and S.mexicana and the S.schenckii var. lurei. It is a ubiquitous disease although more prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas. Currently, it has been reported as a zoonotic disease of cats and dogs, with transmission to their owners in the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Sporotrichosis associated to immunosuppression is uncommon or underreported. There were 34 cases in association with HIV infection or AIDS reported so far. Presenting with disseminated disease and non cutaneous lesions including joints, lungs and central nervous system. Amphotericin B deoxycholate is the first choice for treatment and itraconazol considered an alternative.
