Coherent ecological networks (EN) composed of core areas linked by ecological corridors are being developed worldwide with the goal of promoting landscape connectivity and biodiversity conservation. However, empirical assessment of the performance of EN designs is critical to evaluate the utility of these networks to mitigate effects of habitat loss and fragmentation. Landscape genetics provides a particularly valuable framework to address the question of functional connectivity by providing a direct means to investigate the effects of landscape structure on gene flow. The goals of this study are (1) to evaluate the landscape features that drive gene flow of an EN target species (European pine marten), and (2) evaluate the optimality of a regional EN design in providing connectivity for this species within the Basque Country (North Spain). Using partial Mantel tests in a reciprocal causal modeling framework we competed 59 alternative models, including isolation by distance and the regional EN. Our analysis indicated that the regional EN was among the most supported resistance models for the pine marten, but was not the best supported model. Gene flow of pine marten in northern Spain is facilitated by natural vegetation, and is resisted by anthropogenic landcover types and roads. Our results suggest that the regional EN design being implemented in the Basque Country will effectively facilitate gene flow of forest dwelling species at regional scale.

In 1979 at the request of the Comision Permanente del Pacifico Sur, staff members of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission prepared synopses of eight species of scombrid fishes. These are to be published in Spanish in Revista de la Comision Permanente del Pacifico Sur, number 11, in 1980. This volume contains English versions of those synopses. The Spanish and English versions are not identical, however, the latter having been updated and somewhat modified after the Spanish versions were submitted for publication. These synopses follow closely the format prepared by Rosa (1965) for the synopses to be published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and cooperating organizations. However, instead of preparing detailed taxonomic reviews of the individual species, the taxonomic information for all of the scombrids and billfishes has been put into a separate chapter.

Este estudo tem por objetivo ampliar o conhecimento sobre a flora da Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, RJ, através da avaliação florística e fitossociológica da comunidade arbustivoarbórea, com Circunferência à Altura do Peito ≥ 15,7 cm (CAP ≥ 5,0 cm) em trechos de Floresta Atlântica montana. Foram alocadas 34 parcelas retangulares e permanentes de 10x30 m, totalizando uma área amostral de 1,02 ha. Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos arbustivoarbóreos vivos, que tiveram aferidas a circunferência do caule, estimada a altura total, altura do fuste e realizada a coleta de material botânico. A identificação dos espécimes foi realizada através da análise das estruturas vegetativas e reprodutivas, comparação em herbários, consultas a literatura especializada e, quando possível, com auxílio de especialistas. O material botânico coletado está sendo incorporado à coleção do Herbário da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (HRJ). Procedeu-se a avaliação do status de conservação das espécies determinadas para identificar o grau de ameaça. A estrutura da comunidade inventaria foi analisada através do pacote estatístico FITOPAC 2.1. Inventariou-se 1.847 indivíduos arbustivo-arbóreos vivos, subordinados a 225 espécies ou morfo-espécies de 27 gêneros e 53 famílias botânicas. Este estudo constatou que a Ilha Grande é uma nova área de ocorrência para 53 espécies fanerogâmicas. As famílias mais abundantes foram: Myrtaceae (391 indivíduos), Rubiaceae (337), Euphorbiaceae (100), Fabaceae (84) e Sapotaceae (72). Myrtaceae (69 spp.), Rubiaceae (14), Fabaceae (13), Lauraceae e Sapotaceae (11) foram as famílias que apresentaram as maiores riquezas. O índice de diversidade de Shannon & Weaver (H) obtido foi de 4,609 nats/indvs. e o de equabilidade (J) de 0,851. Os parâmetros fitossociológicos calculados indicaram que Amaioua intermedia Mart. (5,17%), Eriotheca pentaphylla (Vell.) A. Robyns (4,84%), Qualea glaziovii Warm. (2,74%), Vochysia bifalcata Warm. (2,69%), Xylopia brasiliensis Spreng. (2,48%), Heisteria silvianii Schwacke (2,43%), Coussarea nodosa (Benth.) Müll. Arg. (2,38%), Guapira opposita (Vell.) Reitz (2,37%), Manilkara subsericea (Mart.) Dubard (2,02%) e Inga lanceifolia Benth. (1,86%) são as espécies com maiores Valores de Importância (VI). Entre as táxons inventariados foi possível identificar 69 espécies raras, representadas na comunidade por um único indivíduo, e nove espécies com problemas de conservação, dais quais Chrysophyllum flexuosum Mart., Micropholis crassipedicellata (Mart. & Eichler ex Miq.) Pierre e Manilkara subsericea (Mart.) Dubard estão categorizadas como dependentes de conservação; Eugenia prasina O. Berg como vulnerável; Myrceugenia myrcioides (Cambess.) O.Berg como futuramente ameaçada de extinção; Ocotea odorifera Rohwer como ameaçada de extinção e/ou vulnerável a extinção; Pradosia kuhlmannii Toledo como ameaçada de extinção; Solanum carautae Carvalho como espécie rara e Urbanodendron bahiense (Meisn.) Rohwer em perigo de extinção. A distribuição dos indivíduos em classes diamétricas apresentou uma tendência exponencial negativa, sugerindo que a comunidade possui capacidade de autoregeneração. Os resultados da composição florística e da estrutura da vegetação montana do PEIG evidenciaram expressiva riqueza e diversidade de espécies arbóreas, cuja preservação é fundamental para o funcionamento e o equilíbrio desta formação. Clarias species purchased from fish mongers from Ado – Ekiti, Ikun Ekiti, Itapaji – Ekiti Nigeria were examined for possible deformities in any part of their body. A total number of 360, 140, and 40 fish samples were from Ado – Ekiti, Ikun – Ekiti, and Itapaji – Ekiti respectively. Deformities of various types were observed only from Ado – Ekiti collection. The deformities observed are malformed mouth, big head, stumpy body, and multiple vertebral deformities. The possible cause (s) of the deformities may be as a result of stress, pollution from human activities or other factors such as poor nutrition, hereditary, diseases, etc. but these causes has not been properly determined

Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers and cytochrome b (Cyt-b) gene sequences were utilized to fingerprint and construct phylogenetic relationships among four species of mackerel commonly found in the Straits of Malacca namely Rastrelliger kanagurta, R. brachysoma, Decapterus maruadsi and D. russelli. The UPGMA dendogram and genetic distance clearly showed that the individuals clustered into their own genus and species except for the Decapterus. These results were also supported by partial mtDNA cytochrome b gene sequences (279 bp) which found monotypic sequence for all Decapterus studied. Cytochrome b sequence phylogeny generated through Neighbor Joining (NJ) method was congruent with RAPD data. Results showed clear discrimination between both genera with average nucleotide divergence about 25.43%. This marker also demonstrated R. brachysoma and R. kanagurta as distinct species separated with average nucleotide divergence about 2.76%. However, based on BLAST analysis, this study indicated that the fish initially identified as D. maruadsi was actually D. russelli. The results highlighted the importance of genetic analysis for taxonomic validation, in addition to morphological traits.

This work refers to the same biological aspects of Chrysoblephus puniceus (marreco), Polysteganus coeruleopunctatus (cachucho) and Cheimerus nufar (robalo). It shows the progress in the biological study of the three species, pointing out at the same time the few discrepancies, which still need to be resolved.

The daily consumption rates and preference of juvenile Tilapia rendalli for some macrophytes, Ceratophyllum demersum, Lagarosiphon major, Najas pectinatas and Valisneria aethiopica were determined. Fish were offered single macrophyte diets to determine daily consumption and a mixture of the 4 macrophytes in equal quantities to determine selection. Consumption rates were 821.50 mg, 829.05 mg, 940.00 mg and 2293.53 mg per fish per day, respectively. The differences in consumption rates were significant. Preference was shown for V.aethiopica, whilst C.demersum was least selected. Fish fed on single species lost weight whereas those fed on a variety of macrophytes gained in weight.

Three new species of Lumbriculidae were collected from floodplain seeps and small streams in southeastern North America. Some of these habitats are naturally acidic. Sylphella puccoon gen. n., sp. n. has prosoporous male ducts in X-XI, and spermathecae in XII-XIII. Muscular, spherical atrial ampullae and acuminate penial sheaths distinguish this monotypic new genus from other lumbriculid genera having similar arrangements of reproductive organs. Cookidrilus pocosinus sp. n. resembles its two subterranean, Palearctic congeners in the arrangement of reproductive organs, but is easily distinguished by the position of the spermathecal pores in front of the chaetae in X-XIII. Stylodrilus coreyi sp. n. differs from congeners having simple-pointed chaetae and elongate atria primarily by the structure of the male duct and the large clusters of prostate cells. Streams and wetlands of Southeastern USA have a remarkably high diversity of endemic lumbriculids, and these poorly-known invertebrates should be considered in conservation efforts.
