We present our theoretical results for the structural, electronic, vibrational and optical properties of MO(2) (M = Sn, Zr, Hf and Ti) obtained by first-principles calculations. Relativistic effects are demonstrated to be important for a realistic description of the detailed structure of the electronic frequency-dependent dielectric function, as well as of the carrier effective masses. Based on our results, we found that the main contribution of the high values calculated for the oxides dielectric constants arises from the vibrational properties of these oxides, and the vibrational static dielectric constant values diminish with increasing pressure. We report vibrational excitation (v(i) = 0 -> v(f) = 1) cross-sections for positron scattering by H(2) and model calculations for the (v(i) = 0 -> v(f) = 1) excitation of the C-C symmetric stretch mode of C(2)H(2). The Feshbach projection operator formalism was employed to vibrationally resolve the fixed-nuclei phase shifts obtained with the Schwinger multichannel method. The near threshold behavior of H(2) and C(2)H(2) significantly differ in the sense that no low lying singularity (either virtual or bound state) was found for the former, while a e(+)-acetylene virtual state was found at the equilibrium geometry (this virtual state becomes a bound state upon stretching the molecule). For C(2)H(2), we also performed model calculations comparing excitation cross-sections arising from virtual (-i kappa(0)) and bound (+i kappa(0)) states symmetrically located around the origin of the complex momentum plane (i.e. having the same kappa(0)). The virtual state is seen to significantly couple to vibrations, and similar cross-sections were obtained for shallow bound and virtual states. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The molecular arrangement in organic thin films is crucial for their increasing technological applications. Here, we use vibrational spectroscopy by sum-frequency generation (SFG) to study the ordering of polyelectrolyte layers adsorbed on silica for all steps of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. In situ measurements during adsorption and rinsing showed that the adsorbed polymer has a disordered conformation and confirmed surface charge overcompensation upon polyelectrolyte adsorption by probing the interfacial electric field. In dry films, the polymer chains acquired a net orientational ordering, which was affected, however, by the adsorption of subsequent layers. Such a detailed characterization may allow the control of LbL film structure and functionality with unprecedented power.

Sum-Frequency Vibrational Spectroscopy (SFVS) has been used to investigate the effect of nitrogen-flow drying on the molecular ordering of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) films of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) alternated with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS). We find that films dried by spontaneous water evaporation are more ordered and homogeneous than films dried by nitrogen flow. The latter are quite inhomogeneous and may have regions with highly disordered polymer conformation. We propose that drying by spontaneous water evaporation reduces the effect of drag by the drying front, while during nitrogen-flow drying the fast evaporation of water ""freezes"" the disordered conformation of adsorbed polyelectrolyte molecules. These findings are important for many applications of LbL films, since device performance usually depends on film morphology and its molecular structure.

Mebendazole hydrochloride [(5-benzoyl-1H-benzimidazole-2-yl)-carbamic acid methyl ester hydrochloride, MBZ.HCl], a new stable salt of mebendazole (MBZ), has been synthesized and characterized. It can easily be obtained from recrystallization of forms A, B, or C of MBZ in diverse solvents with the addition of hydrochloric acid solution. Crystallographic data reveals that the particular conformation adopted by the carbamic group contributes to the stability of the network. The crystal packing is stabilized by the presence of three N-H...Cl intermolecular interactions that form chains along the b axis. The XRD analyses of the three crystalline habits found in the crystallization process (square-based pyramids, pseudohexagonal plates, and prismatic) show equivalent diffraction patterns. The vibrational behavior is consistent with crystal structure. The most important functional groups show shifts to lower or higher frequencies in relation to the MBZ polymorphs. The thermal study on MBZ center dot HCI indicates that the compound is stable up to 160 degrees C approximately. Decomposition occurs in four steps. In the first step the HCl group is eliminated, and after that the remaining MBZ polymorph A decomposes in three steps, as happens with polymorphs B and C. Unveiling the mechanisms of energy relaxation in biomolecules is key to our understanding of protein stability, allostery, intramolecular signaling, and long-lasting quantum coherence phenomena at ambient temperatures. Yet, the relationship between the pathways of energy transfer and the functional role of the residues involved remains largely unknown. Here, we develop a simulation method of mapping out residues that are highly efficient in relaxing an initially localized excess vibrational energy and perform site-directed mutagenesis functional assays to assess the relevance of these residues to protein function. We use the ligand binding domains of thyroid hormone receptor (TR) subtypes as a test case and find that conserved arginines, which are critical to TR transactivation function, are the most effective heat diffusers across the protein structure. These results suggest a hitherto unsuspected connection between a residue`s ability to mediate intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution and its functional relevance.

Structural and conformational properties of 1H-Isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, 2-[(methoxycarbonyl)thio] (S-phthalimido O-methyl thiocarbonate) are analyzed using a combined approach including X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectra and theoretical calculation methods. The vibrational properties have been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopies along with quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP and B3PW91 functional in connection with the 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets). The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group with a = 6.795(1), b = 5.109(1), c = 30.011(3) angstrom, beta = 90.310(3)degrees and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The conformation adopted by the N-S-C=O group is syn (C=O double bond in synperiplanar orientation with respect to the N-S single bond). The experimental molecular structure is well reproduced by the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work deals with the structural and vibrational characterization of PANI nanofibers prepared through interfacial polymerization using different concentrations of HCl aqueous solution. The results were compared to those obtained by PANI prepared through the conventional route. X-ray diffraction and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques showed that high concentrations of HCl solutions used in the preparation of the PANI nanofibers reduce their crystallinity. The increase of regions with granular morphology was also observed in the scanning electron microscopy images. The changes in the resonance Raman spectra from 200 to 500 cm(-1), FTIR spectra, and the EPR data of the PANI nanofibers reveal an increase in the torsion angles of C-ring-N-C-ring segments owing the formation of bipolarons in the PANI backbone higher than the PANI samples prepared by conventional route.

An archeological artifact can be seen as a chronological element, which helps to determine the age of certain society and to understand the thinking, values and the way of life of this society. Thus, the classification of archeological artifacts is one of the approaches used to study the cultural system of antique societies trying to reconstruct their history. The "Centro de Museologia, Antropologia e Argueologia (CEMAARQ)" of the "Unesp Univ Estadual Paulista" in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo state, Brazil, develops projects within this context (identification and preservation). This is the case of the archeological site named "Lagoa São Paulo-02" discovered in 1993 at the margins of the Parana river in the region of Presidente Epitacio city, São Paulo state, Brazil. This site has ceramic fragments of different shapes and sizes that have a strong influence of traces of the Guarani culture, which is one of the Brazilian native populations. These samples were basically characterized via micro-Raman scattering and Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) spectroscopies. The main objective was to identify the pigments used in the manufacture of the ceramic artifacts and to analyze the composition of the ceramic body to understand how the artifacts were made. Three pigments were found: red, black and white. For the red pigment were identified characteristic bands of hematite, an iron oxide found in the red rocks of the river banks that were eroded by water. The black pigment, probably, is due to the use of vegetal charcoal, which is found in nature as the product of burning organic material such as wood. For the white pigment, the FTIR spectra suggested the use of kaolin, either in the ceramic body or in the proper white pigment, due to the presence of the characteristic bands of the kaolinite. Complementary, the additives applied as anti-plastics were identified as charcoal and quartz, being the latter found in the rocks present in the archeological site. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The effect of manganese on the vibrational properties of Ga(1-x)Mn(x)N (0 <= x <= 0.18) films has been investigated by Raman scattering using 488.0 and 632.8 nm photon excitations. The first-order transverse and longitudinal optical GaN vibrational bands were observed in the whole composition range using both excitations, while the corresponding overtones, as well as a prominent peak located in 1238 cm(-1) (153.5 meV) were only observed in the Mn-containing films under 488.0 nm excitation. We propose that the peak observed at 1238 cm(-1) is due to resonant Mn local vibrational modes, the excitation process being related to electronic transitions involving the Mn acceptor band.

Lead calcium titanate (Pb1-xCaxTiO3 or PCT) thin films have been thermally treated under different oxygen pressures, 10, 40 and 80 bar, by using the so-called chemical solution deposition method. The structural, morphological, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were characterized by x-ray diffraction, FT-infrared and Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and polarization-electric-field hysteresis loop measurements. By annealing at a controlled pressure of around 10 and 40 bar, well-crystallized PCT thin films were successfully prepared. For the sample submitted to 80 bar, the x-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed-infrared and Raman data indicated deviation from the tetragonal symmetry. The most interesting feature in the Raman spectra is the occurrence of intense vibrational modes at frequencies of around 747 and 820 cm(-1), whose presence depends strongly on the amount of the pyrochlore phase. In addition, the Raman spectrum indicates the presence of symmetry-breaking disorder, which would be expected for an amorphous (disorder) and mixed pyrochlore-perovskite phase. During the high-pressure annealing process, the crystallinity and the grain size of the annealed film decreased. This process effectively suppressed both the dielectric and ferroelectric behaviour. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements performed on these PCT films exhibited a clear decrease in the remanent polarization with increasing oxygen pressure.

This paper presents a new static model for tubular fluorescent lamps (T12 bulb) operated at high frequencies. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the effects of ambient temperature and nominal switching frequency of operation in the static characteristics of tubular fluorescent lamps. The methodology for obtaining the model is based on several two-dimensional mathematical regressions, used to provide the behavior of the fluorescent lamp according to different independent variables, namely: power processed through the lamp and ambient temperature. In addition, the proposed model can be easily converted to a lamp equivalent resistance model, which can be useful for ballast designers. Finally, the curves obtained using the new model are compared to the correspondent experimental data, in order to verify the accuracy of the proposed methodology.

The present work has as main objective to contribute to the coordination chemistry of the ligand kojic acid, with the synthesis and characterization of the homoleptic compounds [Al(kj)3], [Fe(kj)3], [Fe(kj)2], [Cu(kj)2] e [Ru(kj)3], and the new heteroleptic complexes, trans- K2[Fe(kj)2(CN)2] and trans-Na2[Ru(kj)2(CN)2]. The obtained compounds were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy in the infrared region (IV) and Electronic spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and visible region (Uv-Vis). The infrared results indicated the coordination of the bidentate ligand kojic acid, due to reductions in the values of the stretching frequencies of the carbonyl and double bonds, compared to the free ligand for all complexes obtained. The presence of new vibrational modes indicated the change of symmetry of the molecules in the new compounds synthesized. Additionally, the presence of vibrational modes assigned to metal-oxygen also contributed to confirm the ligand coordinating to the metal ions. Through this technique, was also possible to perform correlations of the numbers of vibrational modes, in the region 1400-900 cm-1 and the compounds geometry. The heteroleptic compounds exhibited υC≡N in 2065 and 2053 cm-1, respectively, for the trans-K2[Fe(kj)2(CN)2] and trans-Na2[Ru(kj)2(CN)2], indicating coordination of the cyano ligand to metal ions FeII e RuII. Comparing the obtained values with literature data was possible to identify the complex isomerism as trans. In relation to the results of electronic spectroscopy, studies of pH variation of kojic acid provided information on the distribution of electron density in the molecule, showing characteristic spectral profile of kojic ion and its protonated form (Hkj, kojic acid), with two bands at 215 and 269 nm, or deprotonated (kj-), with bands at 226 and 315 nm. The electronic spectra obtained for all complexes in aqueous medium, in the ultraviolet region, exhibited variations of the energies assigned to kojic acid intraligand transitions while in the visible region, only transitions assigned to charge transfer of iron and ruthenium complex have been identified

Studies have suggested that hepatitis C virus (HCV) may infect not only hepatocytes but may also be carried by platelets. Platelets express more than 20 polymorphic antigenic determinants on their surface, which are called human platelet antigens (HPA), To determine the allele frequency of the HPA-1 to -5 in patients infected with HCV, blood samples were collected from 257 blood donors for the control group and from 191 patients infected with HCV. DNA was isolated and amplified for genes HPA-1 to -4 using PCR Sequence Specific Primers (PCR-SSP) and HPA-5 using PCR-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). The allelic and genotypic frequency of HPA-5a in patients infected with HCV was found to be significantly lower(P < 0.05) than in the controls, and HPA-5b from patients infected with HCV was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in controls. The increase in HPA5b allelic frequency in HCV infection may indicate a possible association between HCV infection and HPAs. J. Med. Virol. 81:757-759, 2009. (C) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
