Hamiltonian formalism for nonlocal Lagrangians

A Hamiltonian formalism is set up for nonlocal Lagrangian systems. The method is based on obtaining an equivalent singular first order Lagrangian, which is processed according to the standard Legendre transformation and then, the resulting Hamiltonian formalism is pulled back onto the phase space defined by the corresponding constraints. Finally, the standard results for local Lagrangians of any order are obtained as a particular case.

El Patrimoni cultural entre els criteris de sostenibilitat turística : col·laboració a la Carta Europea de Turisme Sostenible al Montseny

El present projecte té el seu origen en la proposta facilitada per l’Oficina del Parc Natural del Montseny en relació a les accions a portar a terme dins els compromisos de la Carta Europea de Turisme Sostenible (CETS) al Parc durant els anys 2011 – 2015. La Carta Europea de Turisme Sostenible és una acreditació que atorga la Federació EUROPARC als espais naturals protegits que demostren el seu compromís pràctic amb el turisme sostenible, definint una estratègia i un pla d’acció adaptats a les particularitats del territori. El Parc Natural del Montseny es situa entre les demarcacions de Girona i Barcelona i s’estén per les comarques del Vallès Oriental, la Selva i Osona. El Montseny és un espai singular dotat d’alts valors culturals i naturals reconeguts mitjançant la declaració d’importants figures de protecció (Parc Natural Reserva de la Biosfera per la UNESCO i Espai de la Xarxa Natura 2000). El cas de la Carta Europea de Turisme Sostenible al Parc Natural del Montseny supera els límits del Parc i inclou altres municipis limítrofs que compten amb característiques d’identificació amb els valors del massís

Noves aportacions sobre agricultura i alimentació durant la primera edat del ferro a Catalunya: dades de l'assentament de Sant Jaume/Mas d'en Serrà (Alcanar, Montsià)

Els resultats de l'estudi arqueobotànic realitzat sobre diferents àmbits de l'assentament de Sant Jaume aporta noves dades al coneixement de la gestió dels recursos vegetals de la protohistòria del nordest peninsular. El registre arqueològic constata una certa homogeneïtzació en la funcionalitat dels àmbits, que s'interpreten com a magatzems en el pis superior i espais d'estabulació a l'inferior. L'àmbit millor representat és l'A4, que conserva com a fet singular un elevat nombre de restes de llavors i fruits amb molt bon estat de conservació. Els tàxons conreats més importants són la pisana (Triticum dicoccum) i les guixes i guixols (Lathyrus sativus i Lathyrus cicera), seguits d¿una menor proporció d'ordi vestit (Hordeum vulgare), blat nu (comú/dur) (Triticum aestivum/durum), pèsol (Pisum sativum), llentia (Lens culinaris) i erb (Vicia ervilia). D'altra banda, el registre arqueobotànic del pis inferior de l'àmbit A4 sembla posar en evidència la presència de l¿associació de pisana i guixa, destinada a l'alim.

In Livius 1,5,1 the reading Lupercal hoc ludicrum has been interpreted with the meaning of Lupercal game or festivity; however, this interpretation goes against the use in Latin of the singular form Lupercal, wich is used to refer to the cavern and not to the games, wich are always referred to with theplural form Lupercalia. Lexical reasons suggest that Lupercal should also be interpreted here in its usual local sense.

The burden of hospital malnutrition in Spain: methods and development of the PREDyCES® study

It is well known that hospital malnutrition is a highly prevalent condition associated to increase morbidity and mortality as well as related healthcare costs. Although previous studies have already measured the prevalence and/or costs of hospital nutrition in our country, their local focus (at regional or even hospital level) make that the true prevalence and economic impact of hospital malnutrition for the National Health System remain unknown in Spain. The PREDyCES® (Prevalence of hospital malnutrition and associated costs in Spain) study was aimed to assess the prevalence of hospital malnutrition in Spain and to estimate related costs. Some aspects made this study unique: a) It was the first study in a representative sample of hospitals of Spain; b) different measures to assess hospital malnutrition (NRS2002, MNA as well as anthropometric and biochemical markers) where used both at admission and discharge and, c) the economic consequences of malnutrition where estimated using the perspective of the Spanish National Health System.

La Corona immarcescible : pintures de l'antiguitat tardana de la necròpolis alta d'Oxirinc (Mínia, Egipte)

La primera publicació de l’Institut enceta la Sèrie Documenta, que respon a la voluntat de promoure i editar estudis que donin a conèixer i emmarquin científicament nous elements de la cultura material de l’antiguitat clàssica.Aquest llibre estudia un conjunt de pintura mural dels segles V o VI que decorava les parets d’una casa funerària, convertida després en oratori, i que fou descoberta a la necròpolis alta de l’antiga ciutat d’Oxirinc (Mínia, Egipte). El cicle pictòric presenta una sobrietat simbolista que evoluciona després en una iconografia rica en figures i colors.Tot això, completat per la gens menyspreable qualitat artística de les representacions pictòriques, fa d’aquest conjunt una peça arqueològica molt singular.L’estudi inclou un primer capítol a càrrec del Dr. Josep Padró, de la Universitat de Barcelona, Maite Mascort i Hassan Ibrahim Amer, on es sintetitzen els treballs arqueològics i històrics realitzats, des de l’any 1992, a l’antiga Oxirin. Tot seguit, la Dra. Eva Subías, investigadora de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili i col·laboradora de l’Institut des del primer moment, ens ofereix l’estudi històricoartístic del cicle mural. Finalment, Concepció Piedrafita ens dóna la lectura i traducció dels textos grecs presents en les pintures.L’obra inclou una presentació a càrrec de Josep Guitart, director de l’Institut Català d’Arqueologia Clàssica i una traducció dels textos al francès.

¿Se puede hablar de una metrología ilercavona? Sobre la posible existencia de una unidad de medida lineal en la Ilercavonia

A partir del análisis metrológico realizado en 4 asentamientos ibéricos del tramo final del Ebro, en la región ilercavona planteamos la utilización de una unidad de medida basada en un pie de 0,32 m. Su primera aplicación probable se identifica en la torre bipartita del Castellot de la Roca Roja de Benifallet (final del siglo v a.C.), pero será entre los siglos iii y ii a.C. cuando tendrá una mayor adaptación, como se puede apreciar en su uso en la trama urbana de El Castellet de Banyoles de Tivissa, el sistema defensivo de Sant Miquel de Vinebre y probablemente en el edificio singular del Perengil de Vinaròs. Su mayor difusión durante el siglo iii a.C. se relaciona con el momento de concentración de poblamiento en el territorio ilercavón en grandes núcleos, como El Castellet de Banyoles, dentro de un fenómeno de jerarquización del territorio que muestra un sistema económico centralizado de tipo protoestatal.

Sus formas de manifestación, comisión y desarrollo directamente relacionadas con el propio desarrollo de la tecnología; Son una fuente lucrativa para los grupos delictivos organizados y un medio fácil y de poco coste para la obtención de importantes beneficios y con menor riesgo de castigo; Especial idiosincrasia de las localidades de esta comunidad autónoma, favorece su proliferación; Genera un fenómeno sociológico singular : empatía o solidaridad que determina un menor reproche social; -Escasa conciencia popular del carácter delictivo de algunas de estas conductas; -Figura delictiva que entraña organización compleja siendo el Top manta nada más que la “punta del iceberg”. Necesidad de una visión jurídica global para analizar este tipo de delitos y abordarlos adecuadamente.

Persistent unequal sex ratio in a population of grayling (salmonidae) and possible role of temperature increase.

In some fishes, water chemistry or temperature affects sex determination or creates sex-specific selection pressures. The resulting population sex ratios are hard to predict from laboratory studies if the environmental triggers interact with other factors, whereas in field studies, singular observations of unusual sex ratios may be particularly prone to selective reporting. Long-term monitoring largely avoids these problems. We studied a population of grayling (Thymallus thymallus) in Lake Thun, Switzerland, that has been monitored since 1948. Samples of spawning fish have been caught about 3 times/week around spawning season, and water temperature at the spawning site has been continuously recorded since 1970. We used scale samples collected in different years to determine the average age of spawners (for life-stage specific analyses) and to identify the cohort born in 2003 (an extraordinarily warm year). Recent tissue samples were genotyped on microsatellite markers to test for genetic bottlenecks in the past and to estimate the genetically effective population size (N(e) ). Operational sex ratios changed from approximately 65% males before 1993 to approximately 85% males from 1993 to 2011. Sex ratios correlated with the water temperatures the fish experienced in their first year of life. Sex ratios were best explained by the average temperature juvenile fish experienced during their first summer. Grayling abundance is declining, but we found no evidence of a strong genetic bottleneck that would explain the apparent lack of evolutionary response to the unequal sex ratio. Results of other studies show no evidence of endocrine disruptors in the study area. Our findings suggest temperature affects population sex ratio and thereby contributes to population decline. On the connectivity of the escaping set for complex exponential Misiurewicz parameters

Let $ E_{\lambda}(z)=\lambda {\rm exp}(z), \lambda\in \mathbb{C}$, be the complex exponential family. For all functions in the family there is a unique asymptotic value at 0 (and no critical values). For a fixed $ \lambda$, the set of points in $ \mathbb{C}$ with orbit tending to infinity is called the escaping set. We prove that the escaping set of $ E_{\lambda}$ with $ \lambda$ Misiurewicz (that is, a parameter for which the orbit of the singular value is strictly preperiodic) is a connected set.

On an asymptotic formula for the maximum voltage drop in a on-chip power distribution network

We present a new asymptotic formula for the maximum static voltage in a simplified model for on-chip power distribution networks of array bonded integrated circuits. In this model the voltage is the solution of a Poisson equation in an infinite planar domain whose boundary is an array of circular pads of radius ", and we deal with the singular limit Ɛ → 0 case. In comparison with approximations that appear in the electronic engineering literature, our formula is more complete since we have obtained terms up to order Ɛ15. A procedure will be presented to compute all the successive terms, which can be interpreted as using multipole solutions of equations involving spatial derivatives of functions. To deduce the formula we use the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Our results are completely analytical and we make an extensive use of special functions and of the Gauss constant G

Robust power allocation algorithms for MIMO OFDM systems with imperfect CSI

This paper presents a Bayesian approach to the design of transmit prefiltering matrices in closed-loop schemes robust to channel estimation errors. The algorithms are derived for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. Two different optimizationcriteria are analyzed: the minimization of the mean square error and the minimization of the bit error rate. In both cases, the transmitter design is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the conditional mean of the channel response, given the channel estimate. The performance of the proposed algorithms is analyzed,and their relationship with existing algorithms is indicated. As withother previously proposed solutions, the minimum bit error rate algorithmconverges to the open-loop transmission scheme for very poor CSI estimates.

Intrinsic subspace convergence in TDD MIMO communication

In numerical linear algebra, students encounter earlythe iterative power method, which finds eigenvectors of a matrixfrom an arbitrary starting point through repeated normalizationand multiplications by the matrix itself. In practice, more sophisticatedmethods are used nowadays, threatening to make the powermethod a historical and pedagogic footnote. However, in the contextof communication over a time-division duplex (TDD) multipleinputmultiple-output (MIMO) channel, the power method takes aspecial position. It can be viewed as an intrinsic part of the uplinkand downlink communication switching, enabling estimationof the eigenmodes of the channel without extra overhead. Generalizingthe method to vector subspaces, communication in thesubspaces with the best receive and transmit signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is made possible. In exploring this intrinsic subspace convergence(ISC), we show that several published and new schemes canbe cast into a common framework where all members benefit fromthe ISC.

Una pintura d'Antoni Viladomat i Manalt (1678-1755) a Manresa : l'Assumpta de Santa Maria de l'Alba

This painting with an exceptional iconography of the Assumption of the Virgin with All the Saints, was saved from a altarpiece in the church of Santa Maria de l'Alba in Manresa, which was burnt during the Spanish Civil War. The article attributes this painting to Antoni Viladomat i Manalt (1678-1755), one of the most relevant figures in the Catalan artistic scene in the 18th century, and it dates it to the latter years of his extensive artistic career. An analysis of the work shows that the Catalan painter incorporated some figurative elements that he borrowed from an engraving of the Swiss engraver, Jakob Frey (1681-1752), interpreted from a canvas of the Italian painter Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764). This helps to relate the canvas of the Barcelona painter-based on his previous figurative work with high Roman baroque- to the new proposals of the so-called Roman barrochetto. In addition the study hopes to offer the reader an artistically cultural view of Antoni Viladomat, openly concerned by the novelties that constantly reached Catalonia by means of the engravings

La Costa Brava ante los nuevos retos del turismo

The first section of this paper summarises the most relevant charateristics of the contemporary tourist model, also called postfordist or postmodernist. In the second part the traditional tourist model developed in the Costa Brava in the past decades, is reviewed. Emphasising the saturation of tourist facilities on the coast line, expansive urban growth, thanks to a tolerant administration, poor complementary supply and concentrated demand in few markets and the proximity of Barcelona conurbation, stressed by second homes. In the third section, some strategies developed in recent years to readapt the Costa Brava to the new tendencies in tourism, are presented. Incorporation of the inland to the tourist product, new planning policics, lessening urban densities and height, and a change in mind in favour of protected natural areas, diversification of demand with new markets, specially form Eastern Europe (although this might be considered as a continuation ofthe traditional tourist model) and the emergence of local strategies oriented towards the creation of new tourist products based upon natural and cultural resources
