Toxoplasmosis is a global zoonosis caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Detection of antibodies to T. gondii in serum samples from hunted animals may represent a key step for public health protection. It is also important to assess the circulation of this parasite in wild boar population. However, in hunted animals, collection of blood is not feasible and meat juice may represent an alternative sample. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate heart meat juice of hunted wild boars as an alternative sample for post-mortem detection of antibodies to T. gondii by modified agglutination test (MAT). The agreement beyond chance between results from meat juice assessed with Cohen’s kappa coefficient revealed that the 1:20 meat juice dilution provided the highest agreement. McNemars’s test further revealed 1:10 as the most suitable meat juice dilution, as the proportion of positive paired samples (serum and meat juice from the same animal) did not differ at this dilution. All together, these results suggest a reasonable accuracy of heart meat juice to detect antibodies to T. gondii by MAT and support it as an alternative sample in post-mortem analysis in hunted wild boars.

Objective: Information on factors associated with suicide among young individuals in Ireland is limited. The aim of this study was to identify socio-demographic characteristics and circumstances of death associated with age among individuals who died by suicide. Methods: The study examined 121 consecutive suicides (2007–2012) occurring in the southern eastern part of Ireland (Cork city and county). Data were obtained from coroners, family informants, and health care professionals. A comparison was made between 15-24-year-old and 25-34-year-old individuals. Socio-demographic characteristics of the deceased, methods of suicide, history of alcohol and drug abuse, and findings from toxicological analysis of blood and urine samples taken at post mortem were included. Pearson’s χ2 tests and binary logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: Alcohol and/or drugs were detected through toxicological analysis for the majority of the total sample (79.5%), which did not differentiate between 15-24-year-old and 25-34-year-old individuals (74.1% and 86.2% respectively). Compared to 25-34-year-old individuals, 15-24-year-old individuals were more likely to engage in suicide by hanging (88.5%). Younger individuals were less likely to die by intentional drug overdose and carbon monoxide poisoning compared to older individuals. Younger individuals who died between Saturday and Monday were more likely to have had alcohol before dying. Substance abuse histories were similar in the two age groups. Conclusion: Based on this research it is recommended that strategies to reduce substance abuse be applied among 25-34-year-old individuals at risk of suicide. The wide use of hanging in young people should be taken into consideration for future means restriction strategies.

Las numerosas biografías que han venido apareciendo en estos últimos años sobre Ignacio de Loyola han abordado en contadas ocasiones el tratamiento post mortem que recibió el cuerpo del santo jesuita. No obstante, aquellas que sí han tratado este capítulo de la vida del Santo, no han tenido presente la riqueza descriptiva e interpretativa que proporciona la Historia de la Medicina. Estos motivos nos han llevado a confeccionar un artículo en el que se pretende reconstruir la manipulación post mortem que recibió su cuerpo. Al mismo tiempo, el presente texto pretende aventurar algunas nociones sobre los profesionales sanitarios que realizaron la autopsia y el posterior embalsamamiento del cadáver, los “signos de santidad” hallados en el organismo y los lugares en los que se conservó el cuerpo del azpeitiarra.

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar la existencia de la relación entre la atrofia cortical difusa objetivada por neuroimagenes cerebrales y desempeños cognitivos determinados mediante la aplicación de pruebas neuropsicológicas que evalúan memoria de trabajo, razonamiento simbólico verbal y memoria anterógrada declarativa. Participaron 114 sujetos reclutados en el Hospital Universitario Mayor Méderi de la ciudad de Bogotá mediante muestreo de conveniencia. Los resultados arrojaron diferencias significativas entre los dos grupos (pacientes con diagnóstico de atrofia cortical difusa y pacientes con neuroimagenes interpretadas como dentro de los límites normales) en todas las pruebas neuropsicológicas aplicadas. Respecto a las variables demográficas se pudo observar que el grado de escolaridad contribuye como factor neuroprotector de un posible deterioro cognitivo. Tales hallazgos son importantes para determinar protocoles tempranos de detección de posible instalación de enfermedades neurodegenerativas primarias.

In the central nervous system, iron in several proteins is involved in many important processes: oxygen transportation, oxidative phosphorylation, mitochondrial respiration, myelin production, the synthesis and metabolism of neurotransmitters. Abnormal iron homoeostasis can induce cellular damage through hydroxyl radical production, which can cause the oxidation, modification of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and DNA, lead to neurotoxicity. Moreover increased levels of iron are harmful and iron accumulations are typical hallmarks of brain ageing and several neurodegenerative disorders particularly PD. Numerous studies on post mortem tissue report on an increased amount of total iron in the substantia nigra in patients with PD also supported by large body of in vivo findings from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies. The importance and approaches for in vivo brain iron assessment using multiparametric MRI is increased over last years. Quantitative MRI may provide useful biomarkers for brain integrity assessment in iron-related neurodegeneration. Particularly, a prominent change in iron- sensitive T2* MRI contrast within the sub areas of the SN overlapping with nigrosome 1 were shown to be a hallmark of Parkinson's Disease with high diagnostic accuracy. Moreover, differential diagnosis between Parkinson's Disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) remains challenging, mainly in the early phases of the disease. Advanced brain MR imaging enables to detect the pathological changes of nigral and extranigral structures at the onset of clinical manifestations and during the course of the disease. The Nigrosome-1 (N1) is a substructure of the healthy Substantia Nigra pars compacta enriched by dopaminergic neurons; their loss in Parkinson’s disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes is related to the iron accumulation. N1 changes are supportive MR biomarkers for diagnosis of these neurodegenerative disorders, but its detection is hard with conventional sequences, also using high field (3T) scanner. La ricerca in campo agroalimentare ha da sempre messo in evidenza l'importanza della conservazione degli alimenti nel tempo. Alcune nuove tecnologie basate sulle alte pressioni, e dunque non termiche, di stabilizzazione ai fini della conservazione, come l’High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) o High Pressure Processing (HPP), possono risultare fondamentali nel preservare aspetti microbiologici, qualitativi e nutrizionali dell'alimento. In questo elaborato verranno osservati alcuni aspetti del metaboloma, l’insieme delle molecole di piccola dimensione con funzioni metaboliche, di campioni di Mugil cephalus trattati con HHP. Tali aspetti permetteranno di ottenere informazioni sul profilo amminoacidico e sulla freschezza del pesce. Lo studio del profilo amminoacidico permette di tracciare la tendenza del sapore dello specifico campione analizzato dal momento che ogni amminoacido contribuisce a definire uno specifico gusto fondamentale. La freschezza del pesce sarà descritta attraverso il K index che, tramite lo studio della degradazione dei nucleotidi nel periodo post-mortem, rappresenta uno strumento utile al fine dello studio dei cambiamenti della freschezza nel tempo e secondo la tecnologia applicata. L’analisi del metaboloma del cefalo è stata eseguita mediante la spettroscopia di risonanza magnetica nucleare al protone (1H-NMR) di cui si descrivono i principi fisici nel primo capitolo. Nel secondo capitolo sono descritti i software utilizzati per indentificare le molecole che compongono il metaboloma dei campioni analizzati. Infine, nel terzo capitolo, si valuta l’effetto del trattamento HHP (a 400, 500 e 600MPa) sul profilo amminoacidico e sul K index durante il periodo di conservazione.

Oxidative stress biomarker responses to an acute session of hypertrophy-resistance traditional interval training and circuit training. J Strength Cond Res 25(3): 798-804, 2011-We have studied circuit resistance schemes with high loads as a time-effective alternative to hypertrophy-traditional resistance training. However, the oxidative stress biomarker responses to high-load circuit training are unknown. The aim of the present study was to compare oxidative stress biomarker response with an acute session of hypertrophy-resistance circuit training and traditional interval training. A week after the 1 repetition maximum (1RM) test, 11 healthy and well-trained male participants completed hypertrophy-resistance acute sessions of traditional interval training (3 x 10 repetitions at 75% of the 1RM, with 90-second passive rest) and circuit training (3 x 10 repetitions at 75% of the 1RM, in alternating performance of 2 exercises with different muscle groups) in a randomized and cross-over design. Venous blood samples were collected before (pre) and 10 minutes after (post) the resistance training sessions for oxidative stress biomarker assays. As expected, the time used to complete the circuit training (20.2 +/- 1.6) was half of that needed to complete the traditional interval training (40.3 +/- 1.8). Significant increases (p < 0.05) in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (40%), creatine kinase (CK) (67%), glutathione (14%), and uric acid (25%) were detected posttraditional interval training session in relation to pre. In relation to circuit training, a significant increase in CK (33%) activity postsession in relation to pre was observed. Statistical analysis did not reveal any other change in the oxidative stress biomarker after circuit training. In conclusion, circuit resistance-hypertrophy training scheme proposed in the current study promoted lower oxidative stress biomarkers and antioxidant modulations compared with resistance traditional interval training.

Objective To evaluate the effect of periparturient disease accompanied by vulval discharge, and weaning-to-mating intervals, on sow fertility and litter size. Design Reproductive data were collected and analysed from 19 Hungarian swine herds over a 4 year period. Conception rates, farrowing rates and litter sizes of sows with periparturient disease accompanied by vulval discharge were used to evaluate the relationship between duration of vulval discharge and subsequent fertility and litter size. The possibility of interactions between weaning-to-mating intervals and duration of vulval discharges was investigated to determine if there was any effect on subsequent fertility and litter size. Results and conclusions Both parity 1 and parity 2 to 8 sows having had periparturient disease accompanied by vulval discharge in excess of 6 days duration had significantly (P < 0.001) lower subsequent fertility (conception, farrowing and adjusted farrowing rates) compared with sows of similar parity where the duration of vulval discharge was < 4 or 4 to 6 days. There was no difference in fertility rates between sows, in both parity categories, with vulval discharge for < 4 days compared with 4 to 6 days. A duration of vulval discharge in excess of 6 days in parity 1 sows significantly reduced litter size (total born and live-born) in subsequent farrowings, but not in parity 2 to 8 sows. There was no interaction between the duration of vulval discharge and post-weaning to mating intervals. However sows with weaning to mating intervals between 7 and 10 days had smaller (P < 0.001) subsequent litter sizes compared with 3 to 6 or 11 to 14 day intervals. It was concluded that the duration of vulval discharge in excess of 6 days was an indication of a severe persistent endometritis adversely affecting fertility of sows.

Background: Although exercise training is known to promote post-exercise hypotension, there is currently no consistent argument about the effects of manipulating its various components (intensity, duration, rest periods, types of exercise, training methods) on the magnitude and duration of hypotensive response. Objective: To compare the effect of continuous and interval exercises on hypotensive response magnitude and duration in hypertensive patients by using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Methods: The sample consisted of 20 elderly hypertensives. Each participant underwent three ABPM sessions: one control ABPM, without exercise; one ABPM after continuous exercise; and one ABPM after interval exercise. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and double product (DP) were monitored to check post-exercise hypotension and for comparison between each ABPM. Results: ABPM after continuous exercise and after interval exercise showed post-exercise hypotension and a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in SBP, DBP, MAP and DP for 20 hours as compared with control ABPM. Comparing ABPM after continuous and ABPM after interval exercise, a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in SBP, DBP, MAP and DP was observed in the latter. Conclusion: Continuous and interval exercise trainings promote post-exercise hypotension with reduction in SBP, DBP, MAP and DP in the 20 hours following exercise. Interval exercise training causes greater post-exercise hypotension and lower cardiovascular overload as compared with continuous exercise.

Blowflies use discrete and ephemeral substrates to feed their larvae. After they run out of food, the larvae begin to disperse in order to find adequate places for pupation or additional food sources, a process named post-feeding larval dispersion. Some important aspects of this process were studied in a circular arena allowing the combined radial post-feeding dispersion from the center of the arena of C. albiceps and C. megacephala larvae. To determine the location of each pupa, the arena was divided in 72 identical sections starting from the center. The distance from the center, the depth and weight of each pupa were evaluated. Statistical tests were done to verify the relation between weight, depth and distance for pupation. From the total an average of 976 larvae released (488 for each species) were collected considering both experiments 456 C. megacephala pupae and 488 of C. albiceps. This demonstrates that C. albiceps probably preyed on 32 C. megacephala larvae during post-feeding dispersion. The study of this dispersion process can be used to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) of human cadavers in legal medicine.
