Despite the importance of coral reefs to humanity, these environments have been threatened throughout the world. Several factors contribute to the degradation of these ecosystems. The Maracajaú Reef Complex, in Rio Grande do Norte state is part of the Coral Reefs Environment Preservation Area in northeastern Brazil. This area has been receiving an increasing influx of tourism and the integrity of the local reefs is a matter of concern. In this study, the reef macroalgae communities were studied and compared within two areas distinguished by the presence or absence of tourism activities. Two sample sites were chosen: the first one, where diving activities are intense; and the other, where these practices do not occur. Samples were collected at both sites within a quadrate of 625 cm2 of area randomly thrown 5 times along a 10 meters transect line. Richness, Shannon-Hill diversity and Simpson dominance indices were determined based on biomass data. Similarity between sites was analyzed with Bray-Curtis similarity and distance index. Fifty-eight macroalgae species were observed, including 7 Chlorophyta, 13 Phaeophyta and 38 Rhodophyta. In the non-disturbed site, 49 species were found, while at the disturbed site, there were 42 species. Dictyotaceae and Corallinaceae were the most representative families at the non-disturbed site, and Rhodomelaceae and Dictyotaceae at the disturbed site. The non-disturbed site presented a higher biomass and the greatest richness and diversity indices. In the disturbed site the dominance index was greater and Caulerpa racemosa was the dominant species. The dendogram based on similarity index showed two major clusters, and an isolated element at the center that corresponds to a sample from the disturbed site. In the first cluster, samples from the non-impacted site were predominant and fleshy brown algae were more conspicuous. The second cluster was composed primarily of samples from the impacted site, where C. racemosa and red filamentous and erect calcareous algae associations (turf forming) were observed covering large extensions. These associations are represented by groups of algae adapted to environments where disturbances are frequent. They can grow rapidly on substrate where benthic community was removed and do not allow the establishment of other species. The results of the present study show that tourism activity is an impacting factor that has been causing shifts in macroalgae communities in the Maracajaú Reef Complex

The marine turtles biological characteristics and the impact they have been suffering in consequence of human activities have caused in the last decades the decrease of populations to unsustainable levels. All four of the species described in this paper are registered as endangered in a list by IUCN: Caretta caretta, Lepidochelys olivacea, Chelonia mydas, Dermochelys coriacea. The main causes of such impact include several fishing activities, mostly the surface longline. This paper discusses the monitoring of two foreigner longline fleet along the North East Brazilian coast between October of 2004 and September of 2005. Both operated in the West South Atlantic, one using the Chinese technique and the other the American. The American method s target species is the swordfish (Xiphias gladius), and it is characterized by using squid as bait, J 9/0 offset 5º hook, light sticks and night soaking. It also operates in shallower waters than the Chinese method. The source of information about the efforts and the catches came from onboard observers and were used to calculate the catching rate of turtles over 1000 hooks (CPUE). The American equipment caught more turtles (CPUE = 0,059; N= 103), mainly D. coriacea, while the Chinese longline caught mainly the L. olivacea and presented a CPUE= 0,018 (N= 89). The hooks were most frequently found attached to the mouth of C. caretta, C. mydas, and L. olivacea. The D. coriacea were most frequently caught by hooks externally attached to different parts of their body. There was no significant difference between the hook type catching and most turtles were still alive when released. The results suggest a greater potential of turtle catching by the American method. Besides the statistic tests have showed less interaction between the Chinese equipment and marine turtles, the catches of this fishing technique could have been underestimated due to miscommunication between the onboard observer and the vessel s crew plus the retrieve of the longline during night time

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a frequent and complex neurodevelopmental disorder, characterized by impairments in social communication and repetitive behaviors and with a high male to female ratio: ~4:1. Genetic factors, including rare Copy Number Variants (CNVs), have a substantial impact in ASD risk1, and are associated with specific phenotypic manifestations2. Recent studies reported that rare inherited CNVs are enriched in mothers of ASD children compared with mothers of controls and are preferentially transmitted from mothers to ASD children suggesting a sex bias in CNV transmission; further, the imbalanced transmission of small pathogenic CNVs from unaffected mothers to their sons with ASD has been described3,4. An increased prevalence of autism-like personality traits is found in unaffected relatives of ASD children, suggesting a genetic liability of a broader autism phenotype (BAP)5. The BAP in parents of autistic children can be assessed by the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS)6 and Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire (BAPQ)7 reports. The SRS is 65-item questionnaire to identify sub-clinical social impairments and interpersonal behaviour in individuals. The BAPQ is a 36-item questionnaire measures social aloofness, rigid personality, and pragmatic language deficits in both parents and children.

Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder with na estimated global prevalence rate of 17:10000, and a male to female ratio of 4:1. Patients with ASD presente language and communication difficulties and stereotyped behaviours. Comorbidity with other disorders, such as Intelectual Disability, Fragile-X syndrome (FXS) epilepsy and tuberous sclerosis frequently occurs. ASD presents amultifactorial etiopathology, and genetic factos alone are not suficiente to explain how the syndrome arises, with recente studies establishing ASD heritability at approximately 50%. Pre-, peri- and post-natal exposure to toxic environmental factos has been implicated in the development of ASD. Involvement of epigenetic regulatory mechanisms has been suggested, supported by the occurrence of autistic symptoms in patients with disorders aris ing from epigenetic mutations, such as FXS. A polygenic and epistatic model is a strong hypothesis to explain ASD. The main goal of this project is to identify specific exposure patterns to environmental toxicants in children diagnosed with ASD and integrate the results with genetic and epigenetic data.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication/interaction and by unusual repetitive and restricted behaviors and interests. ASD often co-occurs in the same families with other neuropsychiatric diseases (NPD), such as intellectual disability, schizophrenia, epilepsy, depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Genetic factors have an important role in ASD etiology. Multiple copy number variants (CNVs) and single nucleotide variants (SNVs) in candidate genes have been associated with an increased risk to develop ASD. Nevertheless, recent heritability estimates and the high genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity characteristic of ASD indicate a role of environmental and epigenetic factors, such as long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and microRNA (miRNA), as modulators of genetic expression and further clinical presentation. Both miRNA and lncRNA are functional RNA molecules that are transcribed from DNA but not translated into proteins, instead they act as powerful regulators of gene expression. While miRNA are small noncoding RNAs with 22-25 nucleotides in length that act at the post-transcriptional level of gene expression, the lncRNA are bigger molecules (>200 nucleotides in length) that are capped, spliced, and polyadenylated, similar to messenger RNA. Although few lncRNA were well characterized until date, there is a great evidence that they are implicated in several levels of gene expression (transcription/post-transcription/post-translation, organization of protein complexes, cell– cell signaling as well as recombination) as shown in figure 1.

The faunal inventory of the macroinvertebrate community is important to the environmental assessment, since this biota is sensitive to human disturbance. The reservoir of Rio Verde, located on the first plateau of Paraná, is inserted into an agricultural region with several forest fragments Araucaria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental integrity of the reservoir through ecological indexes of macroinvertebrate community benthic and associated with macrophytes. Five sampling points were defined in the study area, which comprise distinct microhabitats in the basin. There were four sampling campaigns, each by weather station: Spring (2014); Summer (2015); Autumn (2015) and Winter (2015). In each sample were measured abiotic various parameters in the field and be collected water samples for nutrient analysis in the laboratory. The macroinvertebrates were collected in triplicate at adapted Macan method using mesh sieve 1 mm and CPUE (catch per unit effort) for 20 minutes. In order to pellet sample was used a dredger model Petersen 2L. Still in the field, by season, samples were collected from macrophytes Myriophyllum aquaticum (Vell) Verdc. and Potamogeton montevidensis A. Benn. in triplicates in the fluvial region of the reservoir, to analyze the associated fractal dimension and macrofauna. For this we used a PVC sampler specific volume 0.025 m3. the following ecological descriptors were calculated in each case: abundance, wealth tax, wealth Margalef, Shannon-Wiener diversity, evenness evenness through the Past software. The index Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) for monitoring sampling points was also calculated. Regarding the statistical analysis, we used the analysis of PERMANOVA to compare points and seasons and canonical correspondence analysis (CCoA) for variables. Regarding M. aquaticum and P. montevidensis it was not verified difference to the average associated macroinvertebrates. However there was a difference for abundance of organisms in the fractal dimension and biomass of specimens. M. aquaticum is more complex and took more macrofauna in relation to P. montevidensis. Regarding the monitoring of the reservoir, it showed up mesotrophic with moderate nutrient concentrations and within the regulatory limits. Benthic macrofauna showed statistical differences in relation to the reservoir region, sample point and temporal variation. The BMWP index showed that the river region has the highest biotic integrity (in all samples above 70 points), and the ecological descriptors of wealth and Margalef diversity of Shannon- Wiener higher. In point 4 (dam downstream) were recorded evidence of possible impacts due to lower wealth and BMWP index which resulted in a questionable quality water. New approaches are needed to focus on the aquatic community in the best understanding of this ecosystem and also with a view to environmental preservation of the Green River Basin.
