En este documento se evidencia como el desempeño organizacional de una empresa, entendido como el rendimiento superior de la misma, se ve modificado por las prácticas o metodologías utilizadas, aplicadas e integradas a cada uno de los componentes de la Cadena de suministros. Es así que el propósito principal es demostrar cual es la relación entre los componentes de la Cadena de Suministros y su gestión sobre los rendimientos económicos de la empresa. De esa manera se encontraron múltiples actividades que toman lugar en los procesos característicos de cada uno de los componentes de la cadena de suministros y que al final nos presentan una variabilidad sobre los rendimientos de la empresa. Cabe recalcar que la investigación se realizó con respecto a empresas pertenecientes al sector manufacturero y abarca una buena parte de este. La importancia que tiene la investigación, es el haber entregado como resultado, el conocimiento sobre algunas de las practicas más utilizadas en el sector en cada uno de sus componentes, lo cual hace de la Cadena de suministros, un factor por excelencia para ser tratado e implementado con el fin de alcanzar mayores rendimientos económicos a nivel de empresa. En la investigación se utilizaron los casos de empresas reales tanto nacionales como internacionales y se encontraron situaciones claves que evidenciaban la hipótesis de la relación entre la cadena de suministros y el desempeño organizacional. Es por ello, que si bien es ahora cierto, que las actividades desarrolladas en los componentes de la Cadena de Suministros de las empresas influyen en el incremento de los rendimientos, es importante que las empresas conozcan de esta información para tener una idea de cómo desarrollar ventajas competitivas que los posicionen como empresa y les genere entonces mayores rendimientos, o por el contrario, les genere ahorros en costos y por ende altos beneficios y nuevas inversiones en prácticas que a la larga volverá a la empresa en un organismo eficientes y próspero.

Se trata de habilitar las mejores prácticas de enseñanza a través de las tecnologías de la información para posibilitar un aprendizaje más efectivo para los alumnos, así como proporcionar un sencillo y flexible acceso a todas las potencialidades para los profesores, al mismo tiempo que se maximiza la eficiencia y adecuación de su implementación usando las tecnologías de la información. Se define una teoría de modelado del e-learning, que por un lado aporte una visión global de modelado del e-learning; y por otro, modele de forma completa desde diferentes puntos de vista aspectos para los que se detectan carencias Otro objetivo es crear un nuevo sistema de pistas adaptativo en tutoría inteligente utilizando técnicas de Web semántica, donde se apliquen varios de los diferentes aspectos de la teoría. En esta tesis se proporciona una teoría de modelado del e-learning, que incluye una visión global sobre qué modelar y cómo hacerlo, las interrelaciones entre diferentes conceptos y elementos, una visión ideal sobre el e-learning, una propuesta de proceso de desarrollo en ciclo de vida, y un plan general de evaluación de los diferentes aspectos involucrados. Además, como parte de esta teoría, se han analizado las relaciones entre las funcionalidades de sistemas de gestión del aprendizaje y los estándares de e-learning actuales, se ha definido un nuevo modelo que extiende UML y otro basado en la especificación IMS-CP (Content Packaging) para el modelado de cursos completos en sistemas de gestión del aprendizaje, se ha contribuido en varias herramientas de autor que pueden verse como modelados en lenguaje natural de diferentes aspectos del e-learning de forma que sean sencillos de utilizar por profesores sin grandes conocimientos tecnológicos, y se ha creado una nueva teoría de reglas de adaptación personalizadas que son atómicas, reusables, intercambiables, e interoperables. Se ha definido una nueva especificación de pistas para el aprendizaje basado en problemas, que recopila funcionalidades de otros sistemas del estado del arte, pero también incluye nuevas funcionalidades basadas en ideas propias, dando una justificación pedagógica de cada aspecto. Se ha establecido un mapeo a XML, y otra representación a UML. Así mismo, se ha diseñado una herramienta de autor que permite a profesores sin grandes conocimientos tecnológicos crear los ejercicios con pistas de acuerdo con la especificación. Para poner en práctica este modelo de pistas, se ha implementado un módulo reproductor de pistas programado en python como una extesión al tutor inteligente XTutor. Este reproductor permite desplegar ejercicios con pistas que cubren los casos de la nueva especificación definida y que quedan disponibles vía Web para su uso por parte de los alumnos. También se ha diseñado una herramienta de competición innovadora para aprovechar la motivación junto con el aprendizaje basado en problemas.

La demanda creixent de productes mínimament processats i llestos per al consum planteja un important repte per a la seguretat alimentaria i ha conduit al desenvolupament de tractaments suaus que permetin inhibir el creixement microbià conservant la qualitat dels aliments. Els treballs recollits a la present tesi van plantejar diverses estratègies consistents en la combinació d'obstacles al creixement microbià per a millorar la seguretat de productes carnis llestos per al consum. Amb l'objectiu de millorar la seguretat dels embotits poc àcids, es va valorar l'aplicació del tractament per alta pressió hidrostàtica (APH) i l'addició de cultius iniciadors en embotits poc àcids. Per altra banda, per a reduir el risc de L. monocytogenes durant la conservació del pernil cuit llescat, es va avaluar l'efecte combinat de l'addició d'antimicrobians naturals (lactatat-diacetat i enterocines), afegits directament o a través de l'envasament antimicrobià, i el tractament per alta pressió hidrostàtica.

Se introdujeron varias modificaciones tecnológicas en la elaboración habitual del jamón curado español de cerdo blanco para mejorar su seguridad y calidad, así como para investigar la contribución relativa de los diversos procesos implicados en la calidad sensorial. Las modificaciones introducidas en cada uno de 3 experimentos (a, b, c) fueron: a) inoculación de un cultivo iniciador (CI) en la superficie del producto y el envasado del jamón al vacío durante la etapa de reposo (EV); b) aplicación de una atmósfera modificada con un contenido reducido de oxígeno (AMCRO) (durante la totalidad o la última parte del procesado) en dos procesos que diferían en las humedades relativas aplicadas; c) realización de un estufaje de 4 días a 35ºC y la aplicación repetida de pequeñas cantidades de grasa dorsal líquida sobre la superficie del jamón. En cada experimento, se siguió un diseño experimental de bloques incompletos para bloquear y evaluar el efecto de la materia prima en cada parámetro. La aplicación del CI evitó el crecimiento superficial de hongos, pero modificó el flavor del producto, dando lugar a la aparición de flavores impropios del jamón tradicional, al aumento de la incidencia de la coquera y a la reducción de la intensidad de notas características del mismo como el flavor añejo. Estos efectos fueron debidos a la acción directa del CI pero probablemente también a los cambios que provocó en la superficie del jamón, como la atenuación del "sudado" del jamón. El EV trajo consigo una reducción del crecimiento superficial de mohos; un mayor gradiente de humedad entre el interior y el exterior del jamón; una disminución de la pérdida de peso; un aumento del nitrógeno no proteico y cambios negativos en la textura, aspecto y flavor, como el aumento de la intensidad del velo blanco y del flavor a pienso, el aumento de la incidencia de la coquera y la atenuación del flavor añejo. Estos efectos fueron consecuencia del mayor contenido de humedad a que dio lugar dicha modificación tecnológica, de la potenciación de los efectos negativos del uso del CI, así como a los cambios que provocó en la superficie del jamón. El uso de una ACRO durante todo el proceso provocó un aumento del nitrógeno no proteico, una disminución de la concentración de óxidos de colesterol, un aumento de la intensidad del velo blanco y, en combinación con el uso de humedades relativas bajas, causó una disminución del crecimiento bacteriano y evitó el crecimiento de hongos, levaduras y ácaros en el interior y exterior del jamón y el desarrollo de la coquera. Asímismo, dio lugar a una drástica reducción de la intensidad del flavor del jamón debido a la disminución de la intensidad de la oxidación lipídica. Cuando esta ACRO se aplicó únicamente al final del proceso, se consiguió la eliminación de las formas móviles de los ácaros y la disminución de la intensidad de la coquera y el producto resultante poseía un flavor algo más intenso que aquél sometido a una ACRO durante todo el proceso. El aumento de la temperatura de 25-27 ºC a 35 ºC durante 4 días no tuvo ningún efecto sobre los parámetros estudiados. La aplicación de la grasa líquida en la superficie del jamón evitó el secado excesivo en superficie, previno el desarrollo de la coquera y causó un aumento de la intensidad del flavor añejo y una reducción de la incidencia de notas negativas como el tostado, hechos que indican que la liberación de grasa líquida en el jamón ("sudado") constituye un fenómeno determinante en su calidad sensorial. La materia prima fue el factor que afectó a un mayor número de parámetros.

La miniaturització de la industria microelectrònica és un fet del tot inqüestionables i la tecnologia CMOS no n'és una excepció. En conseqüència la comunitat científica s'ha plantejat dos grans reptes: En primer lloc portar la tecnologia CMOS el més lluny possible ('Beyond CMOS') tot desenvolupant sistemes d'altes prestacions com microprocessadors, micro - nanosistemes o bé sistemes de píxels. I en segon lloc encetar una nova generació electrònica basada en tecnologies totalment diferents dins l'àmbit de les Nanotecnologies. Tots aquests avanços exigeixen una recerca i innovació constant en la resta d'àrees complementaries com són les d'encapsulat. L'encapsulat ha de satisfer bàsicament tres funcions: Interfície elèctrica del sistema amb l'exterior, Proporcionar un suport mecànic al sistema i Proporcionar un camí de dissipació de calor. Per tant, si tenim en compte que la majoria d'aquests dispositius d'altes prestacions demanden un alt nombre d'entrades i sortides, els mòduls multixip (MCMs) i la tecnologia flip chip es presenten com una solució molt interessant per aquests tipus de dispositiu. L'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és la de desenvolupar una tecnologia de mòduls multixip basada en interconnexions flip chip per a la integració de detectors de píxels híbrids, que inclou: 1) El desenvolupament d'una tecnologia de bumping basada en bumps de soldadura Sn/Ag eutèctics dipositats per electrodeposició amb un pitch de 50µm, i 2) El desenvolupament d'una tecnologia de vies d'or en silici que permet interconnectar i apilar xips verticalment (3D packaging) amb un pitch de 100µm. Finalment aquesta alta capacitat d'interconnexió dels encapsulats flip chip ha permès que sistemes de píxels tradicionalment monolítics puguin evolucionar cap a sistemes híbrids més compactes i complexes, i que en aquesta tesi s'ha vist reflectit transferint la tecnologia desenvolupada al camp de la física d'altes energies, en concret implantant el sistema de bump bonding d'un mamògraf digital. Addicionalment s'ha implantat també un dispositiu detector híbrid modular per a la reconstrucció d'imatges 3D en temps real, que ha donat lloc a una patent.

A obesidade infantil apresenta-se como uma epidemia que afeta milhares de crianças em todo o Mundo, e a publicidade tem sido apontada por inúmeros autores como sendo a principal causa por este problema global. Ao longo deste estudo, tivemos como objetivo analisar se existe algum efeito da publicidade na obesidade infantil, tendo em conta o estímulo ao consumo de grande variedade de alimentos com alta intensidade calórica, por via das estratégias de marketing. Para enquadrar este estudo, procuramos identificar o papel da publicidade na vida das crianças, nas atividades desenvolvidas nos tempos livres, a influência do estilo de vida nas atividades físicas, e por fim tentar perceber o papel que a publicidade, os tempos livres e o estilo de vida têm na obesidade infantil. A investigação apresenta-se como um estudo de caso exploratório qualitativo, onde foram utilizadas entrevistas estruturadas e não estruturadas individuais, bem como de grupo utilizando a técnica de Focus Grupo num infantário privado no concelho de Cascais. A amostra analisada contou com 12 crianças com idades compreendidas entre os 2 anos e os 5 anos, 10 encarregados de educação, entre eles 3 homens e 7 mulheres com idades compreendidas entre os 27 anos e os 45 anos. Foram incluídas ainda na amostra uma educadora de infância e a directora do infantário, o que permitiu estabelecer uma relação entre as diversas variáveis em estudo. Desta forma, foi possível chegar a resultados que nos indicaram em primeiro lugar, que as crianças nesta faixa etária estão expostas a um número muito elevado de mensagens publicitárias, e que a publicidade já faz parte integrante da sua vida. Percebemos ainda que alguns pais tentam controlar o número de horas de exposição à publicidade, na televisão, bem como os canais visualizados pelos filhos. No entanto não o conseguem, por eles estarem em contato com a publicidade através dos mais variados meios. Verificou-se deste modo que as crianças já conhecem muitas marcas, embalagens e as respectivas mascotes e que por isso solicitam a sua compra. A embalagem reforçou neste estudo a sua importância, uma vez que se apresenta em alguns casos como a grande atração no ponto de venda independentemente do tipo de produto. Relativamente aos tempos livres, existe um padrão de comportamentos onde as crianças praticam mais actividades no verão e aos fins-de-semana devido à disponibilidade dos pais, sendo que no restante período o sedentarismo é muito grande e que a exposição à televisão é muito acentuada. Os factores económicos, sociais e tecnológicos apresentam-se como os principais influenciadores relativamente ao estilo de vida. Como conclusão, consideramos que a obesidade nas crianças é multifacetada e que a publicidade não é o seu principal influenciador, é apenas mais um factor que poderá agravar a situação de muitas crianças quando não têm o devido acompanhamento familiar.

The simulated annealing approach to structure solution from powder diffraction data, as implemented in the DASH program, is easily amenable to parallelization at the individual run level. Very large scale increases in speed of execution can therefore be achieved by distributing individual DASH runs over a network of computers. The GDASH program achieves this by packaging DASH in a form that enables it to run under the Univa UD Grid MP system, which harnesses networks of existing computing resources to perform calculations.

Study objectives: There is a possibility that lower air, moisture and light protection could impact on physico-chemical stability of medicines inside multi-compartment compliance aids (MCCAs), although this has not yet been proved. The objectives of the study were to examine the physico-chemical stability of atenolol tablets stored in a compliance aid at room temperature, and at elevated temperature and humidity to simulate practice conditions. Methods: Atenolol 100 mg tablets in 28-chamber, plastic compliance aids with transparent lids were stored for four weeks at room temperature and at 40°C with 75% relative humidity. Tablets were also stored at room temperature in original packaging and Petri dishes. Physical tests were conducted to standards as laid down in the British Pharmacopoeia 2005, and dissolution to those of the United States Pharmacopoeia volume 24. Chemical stability was assessed by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Results: Tablets at room temperature in original packaging, in compliance aids and Petri dishes remained the same in appearance and passed physico-chemical tests. Tablets exposed to 40°C with 75% relative humidity in compliance aids passed tests for uniformity of weight, friability and chemical stability but became pale and moist, softer (82 newtons ± 4; p< 0.0001) than tablets in the original packaging (118 newtons ± 6), more friable (0.14% loss of mass) compared with other tablets (0.005%), and failed the tests for disintegration (>15 minutes) and dissolution (only 15% atenolol released at 30 minutes). Conclusion: Although chemical stability was unaffected, storage in compliance aids at 40°C with 75% relative humidity softened atenolol tablets, prolonged disintegration time and hindered dissolution which could significantly reduce bioavailability. This formulation could be suitable for storage in compliance aids at 25°C, but not in hotter, humid weather.

Consumers increasingly demand convenience foods of the highest quality in terms of natural flavor and taste, and which are freedom additives and preservatives. This demand has triggered the need for the development of a number of nonthermal approaches to food processing, of which high-pressure technology has proven to be very valuable. A number of recent publications have demonstrated novel and diverse uses of this technology. Its novel features, which include destruction of microorganisms at room temperature or lower, have made the technology commerically attractive. Enzymes forming bacteria can be by the application of pressure-thermal combinations. This review aims to identify the opportunities and challenges associated with this technology. In addition to discussing the effects of high pressure on food components, this review covers the combined effects of high pressure processing with: gamma irradiation, alternating current, ultrasound, and carbon dioxide or anti-microbial treatment. Further, the applications of this technology in various sectors-fruits and vegetables, dairy and meat processing-have been dealt with extensively. The integration of high-pressure with other matured processing operations such as blanching, dehydration, osmotic dehydration, rehyrdration, frying, freezing/thawing and solid-liquid extraction has been shown to open up new processing options. The key challenges identified include: heat transfer problems and resulting non-uniformity in processing, obtaining reliable and reproducible data, for process validation, lack of detailed knowledge about the interaction between high pressure, and a number of food constituents, packaging and statutory issues.

Metallized plastics have recently received significant interest for their useful applications in electronic devices such as for integrated circuits, packaging, printed circuits and sensor applications. In this work the metallized films were developed by electroless copper plating of polyethylene films grafted with vinyl ether of monoethanoleamine. There are several techniques for metal deposition on surface of polymers such as evaporation, sputtering, electroless plating and electrolysis. In this work the metallized films were developed by electroless copper plating of polyethylene films grafted with vinyl ether of monoethanoleamine. Polyethylene films were subjected to gamma-radiation induced surface graft copolymerization with vinyl ether of monoethanolamine. Electroless copper plating was carried out effectively on the modified films. The catalytic processes for the electroless copper plating in the presence and the absence of SnCl2 sensitization were studied and the optimum activation conditions that give the highest plating rate were determined. The effect of grafting degree on the plating rate is studied. Electroless plating conditions (bath additives, pH and temperature) were optimized. Plating rate was determined gravimetrically and spectrophotometrically at different grafting degrees. The results reveal that plating rate is a function of degree of grafting and increases with increasing grafted vinyl ether of monoethanolamine onto polyethylene. It was found that pH 13 of electroless bath and plating temperature 40°C are the optimal conditions for the plating process. The increasing of grafting degree results in faster plating rate at the same pH and temperature. The surface morphology of the metallized films was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adhesion strength between the metallized layer and grafted polymer was studied using tensile machine. SEM photos and adhesion measurements clarified that uniform and adhered deposits were obtained under optimum conditions.

This work compares classification results of lactose, mandelic acid and dl-mandelic acid, obtained on the basis of their respective THz transients. The performance of three different pre-processing algorithms applied to the time-domain signatures obtained using a THz-transient spectrometer are contrasted by evaluating the classifier performance. A range of amplitudes of zero-mean white Gaussian noise are used to artificially degrade the signal-to-noise ratio of the time-domain signatures to generate the data sets that are presented to the classifier for both learning and validation purposes. This gradual degradation of interferograms by increasing the noise level is equivalent to performing measurements assuming a reduced integration time. Three signal processing algorithms were adopted for the evaluation of the complex insertion loss function of the samples under study; a) standard evaluation by ratioing the sample with the background spectra, b) a subspace identification algorithm and c) a novel wavelet-packet identification procedure. Within class and between class dispersion metrics are adopted for the three data sets. A discrimination metric evaluates how well the three classes can be distinguished within the frequency range 0. 1 - 1.0 THz using the above algorithms.

The addition of small quantities of nanoparticles to conventional and sustainable thermoplastics leads to property enhancements with considerable potential in many areas of applications including food packaging 1, lightweight composites and high performance materials 2. In the case of sustainable polymers 3, the addition of nanoparticles may well sufficiently enhance properties such that the portfolio of possible applications is greatly increased. Most engineered nanoparticles are highly stable and these exist as nanoparticles prior to compounding with the polymer resin. They remain as nanoparticles during the active use of the packaging material as well as in the subsequent waste and recycling streams. It is also possible to construct the nanoparticles within the polymer films during processing from organic compounds selected to present minimal or no potential health hazards 4. In both cases the characterisation of the resultant nanostructured polymers presents a number of challenges. Foremost amongst these are the coupled challenges of the nanoscale of the particles and the low fraction present in the polymer matrix. Very low fractions of nanoparticles are only effective if the dispersion of the particles is good. This continues to be an issue in the process engineering but of course bad dispersion is much easier to see than good dispersion. In this presentation we show the merits of a combined scattering (neutron and x-ray) and microscopy (SEM, TEM, AFM) approach. We explore this methodology using rod like, plate like and spheroidal particles including metallic particles, plate-like and rod-like clay dispersions and nanoscale particles based on carbon such as nanotubes and graphene flakes. We will draw on a range of material systems, many explored in partnership with other members of Napolynet. The value of adding nanoscale particles is that the scale matches the scale of the structure in the polymer matrix. Although this can lead to difficulties in separating the effects in scattering experiments, the result in morphological studies means that both the nanoparticles and the polymer morphology are revealed.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a severe X-linked inherited muscle wasting disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors have been extensively used to deliver genes efficiently for dystrophin expression in skeletal muscles. To overcome limited packaging capacity of AAV vectors (<5 kb), truncated recombinant microdystrophin genes with deletions of most of rod and carboxyl-terminal (CT) domains of dystrophin have been developed. We have previously shown the efficiency of mRNA sequence–optimized microdystrophin (ΔR4-23/ΔCT, called MD1) with deletion of spectrin-like repeat domain 4 to 23 and CT domain in ameliorating the pathology of dystrophic mdx mice. However, the CT domain of dystrophin is thought to recruit part of the dystrophin-associated protein complex, which acts as a mediator of signalling between extracellular matrix and cytoskeleton in muscle fibers. In this study, we extended the ΔR4-23/ΔCT microdystrophin by incorporating helix 1 of the coiled-coil motif in the CT domain of dystrophin (MD2), which contains the α1-syntrophin and α-dystrobrevin binding sites. Intramuscular injection of AAV2/9 expressing CT domain–extended microdystrophin showed efficient dystrophin expression in tibialis anterior muscles of mdx mice. The presence of the CT domain of dystrophin in MD2 increased the recruitment of α1-syntrophin and α-dystrobrevin at the sarcolemma and significantly improved the muscle resistance to lengthening contraction–induced muscle damage in the mdx mice compared with MD1. These results suggest that the incorporation of helix 1 of the coiled-coil motif in the CT domain of dystrophin to the microdystrophins will substantially improve their efficiency in restoring muscle function in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Particulate antigen assemblies in the nanometer range and DNA plasmids are particularly interesting for designing vaccines. We hypothesised that a combination of these approaches could result in a new delivery method of gp160 envelope HIV-1 vaccine which could combine the potency of virus-like particles (VLPs) and the simplicity of use of DNA vaccines. Characterisation of lentivirus-like particles (lentiVLPs) by western blot, dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy revealed that their protein pattern, size and structure make them promising candidates for HIV-1 vaccines. Although all particles were similar with regard to size and distribution, they clearly differed in p24 capsid protein content suggesting that Rev may be required for particle maturation and Gag processing. In vivo, lentiVLP pseudotyping with the gp160 envelope or with a combination of gp160 and VSV-G envelopes did not influence the magnitude of the immune response but the combination of lentiVLPs with Alum adjuvant resulted in a more potent response. Interestingly, the strongest immune response was obtained when plasmids encoding lentiVLPs were co-delivered to mice muscles by electrotransfer, suggesting that lentiVLPs were efficiently produced in vivo or the packaging genes mediate an adjuvant effect. DNA electrotransfer of plasmids encoding lentivirus-like particles offers many advantages and appears therefore as a promising delivery method of HIV-1 vaccines. The rise of food security up international political, societal and academic agendas has led to increasing interest in novel means of improving primary food production and reducing waste. There are however, also many ‘post-farm gate’ activities that are critical to food security, including processing, packaging, distributing, retailing, cooking and consuming. These activities all affect a range of important food security elements, notably availability, affordability and other aspects of access, nutrition and safety. Addressing the challenge of universal food security, in the context of a number of other policy goals (e.g. social, economic and environmental sustainability), is of keen interest to a range of UK stakeholders but requires an up-to-date evidence base and continuous innovation. An exercise was therefore conducted, under the auspices of the UK Global Food Security Programme, to identify priority research questions with a focus on the UK food system (though the outcomes may be broadly applicable to other developed nations). Emphasis was placed on incorporating a wide range of perspectives (‘world views’) from different stakeholder groups: policy, private sector, non-governmental organisations, advocacy groups and academia. A total of 456 individuals submitted 820 questions from which 100 were selected by a process of online voting and a three-stage workshop voting exercise. These 100 final questions were sorted into 10 themes and the ‘top’ question for each theme identified by a further voting exercise. This step also allowed four different stakeholder groups to select the top 7–8 questions from their perspectives. Results of these voting exercises are presented. It is clear from the wide range of questions prioritised in this exercise that the different stakeholder groups identified specific research needs on a range of post-farm gate activities and food security outcomes. Evidence needs related to food affordability, nutrition and food safety (all key elements of food security) featured highly in the exercise. While there were some questions relating to climate impacts on production, other important topics for food security (e.g. trade, transport, preference and cultural needs) were not viewed as strongly by the participants.
