Using the Bridgeman-Stockbarger method, the KMgF3:EU2+ single crystal was grown. The color centers in unirradiated KMgF3:Eu crystal were studied. By thermal annealing, we confirmed the 422-nm emission resulted from color centers and oxygen centers, and we proved the energy transfer from EU2+ to color centers. From spectra, the relative oxygen content in crystal was calculated, and the relationships of oxygen displacing fluorine were studied.

Gas transport of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane in four cardo poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing different alkyl substituents on the phenyl ring has been examined from 30 to 100 degrees C. The permeability, diffusivity, solubility, and their temperature dependency were studied by correlations with gas shape, size, and critical temperature as well as polymeric structural factors including glass transition, secondary transition, cohesive energy density, and free volume. The bulky, stiff cardo and alkyl groups in tetramethyl-substituted TMPEK-C resulted in increased H-2 permeability (by 55%) and H-2/N-2 permselectivity (by 106%) relative to bisphenol A polysulfone (PSF). Moreover, the weak dependence of gas transport on temperature in TMPEK-C made it maintain high permselectivities (alpha(H2/N2) in 68.3 and alpha(O2/N2) in 5.71) up to 100 degrees C, exhibiting potential for high-temperature gas separation applications.

In order to understand the role of active oxygen species in mediating plant injuries induced by far-UV radiation, seedlings of Taxus cuspidata Sieb. et Zucc. were irradiated by far-UV rays in laboratory for 4 weeks. The production of organic free-radicals in detached needles, and the production of O-2(radical anion) and O-1(2) in isolated chloroplasts were detected weekly by electron spin resonance (ESR) to evaluate their relative importance. The results show that the cumulative effect of far-UV irradiation, is best indicated by the production of organic free radicals in the needles, O-2(radical anion) production in chloroplasts is the next. The enhancement of O-1(2) production in chloroplasts by the cumulative far-UV irradiation seems to be not so important as O-2(radical anion) in mediating injuries induced by, far-UV radiation because of its high background value.

Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. Two series of layered mixed oxides La4BaCu5-xMxO13+lambda(M = Mn, Co, x = 0 similar to 5) were prepared and characterized by means of XRD, XPS, O-2-TPD and chemical analysis. The results show that their structures are 5-layered ABO(3) perovskite, and the XPS and O-2-TPD investigation confirms that there exists synergistic effect between Cu ion and M when M ion is doped into the lattice of La4BaCu5O13+lambda,, and the synergistic effect between Mn and Cu is stronger than that of Cu-Co.

Crosslinking modification of polyimide, prepared from 3,3'4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA) and 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-diphenylenediamine (4MPDA), was performed by two methods, putting the polyimide in ambient environment for 4 months, and under UV irradiation for 2 or 8 h. The gas permeation properties of the crosslinked polyimides were investigated. The crosslinked polyimides induced by UV irradiation, in which crosslinking occurs in the surface layer, are of much higher gas permselectivity of hydrogen to nitrogen than that induced by the ambient environment, in which crosslinking takes place in the whole matrix, but their gas permeabilities for hydrogen are similar. A series of copolyimides were prepared from 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines (3MPDA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Modification of the copolyimides by ultraviolet irradiation were carried out. Gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2, and N-2 through the copolyimides and photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees C. The relationships between gas permeabilities and temperature are in agreement with the Arrhenius equation. The structure of photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and gel measurement methods. Linear relationships between both log P and E-p and the volume fraction of PMDA-3MPDA exist. Photochemically crosslinking modification result in a decrease in gas permeability and an increase in E-p and alpha(H-2/N-2) for all the copolyimides. For H-2/N-2 separation, photochemically crosslinked copolyimides are of higher gas permeabilities and permselectivities simultaneously than normal polyimides. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Composite membrane modified electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition of platinum particles in a poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PPD) him coated on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes. The modified electrodes showed high catalytic activity towards the reduction of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. A four-electron transfer process predominated the reduction process. The pH dependence and the stability of the electrodes were also studied.

A series of vinylidene dichloride (VDC) copolymers with methyl acrylate (MA) as comonomer (3-12wt%), was prepared by free-radical suspension copolymerization. The permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured at 1.0 MPa and at 30 degrees C, and those to water vapor were measured at 30 degrees C and 100% relative humidity. All the VDC/MA copolymers studied are semicrystalline. As the MA content increases, the permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor are progressively increased, caused by decrease in crystalline fraction and increase in free volume of VDC/MA copolymers.

A series of acrylonitrile (AN) copolymers with methyl acrylate (MA) or ethyl acrylate (EA) as comonomer (5-23 wt%) was prepared by free-radical copolymerisation. The permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen and carbon dioxide were measured at 1.0 MPa and at 30 degrees C, and those to water vapor also measured at 100% relative humidity and at 30 degrees C. All the AN/acrylic copolymers are semicrystalline. As the acrylate content increase, the permeability coefficients of the copolymers to oxygen and carbon dioxide are increased progressively, but those to water vapor are decreased progressively. The gas permeability coefficients of the polymers were correlated with free-volume fractions or the ratio of free volume to cohesive energy.

It was found that vitamin B-12 could be strongly adsorpted on the anodized glassy carbon electrode to form a vitamin Thy-modified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode is stable in a wide pH range. The electrochemical characteristics of the modified electrode were studied in details. In addition, it was found that the reduction of oxygen could be catalyzed by the modified electrode to form H2O2. An EC mechanism was suggested for the process, and the follow up chemical reaction might he the rate determined step.

The gas transport of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gases in a series of poly(aryl ether ketone)s was examined. These polymer membranes have a wide range of permeability coefficients and permselectivity coefficients, showing excellent gas-transport properties. The enhanced interchain interaction in the polymers due to intermolecular hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds results in a considerable increase in permselectivity but a decrease in permeability. On the contrary, the polymers with bulky arkyl substituents show significantly increased permeability. The causes of this trend are interpreted in terms of the free volume, interchain distance, and glass transition temperature together with the respective contribution of gas solubility and diffusivity to the overall permeability. Of interest is the observation that the ionomer IMPEK-K+, which simultaneously contains bulky isopropyl substituents and pendant carboxylate groups, exhibits over twice higher CO2 permeability and 15% higher CO2/CH4 permselectivity than those of bisphenol-A p'olysulfone (PSF). The possibility of using the new synthesized poly(aryl ether ketone)s in gas separation membrane application is also discussed. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The surface of aromatic polyamide reverse osmosis composite membrane was modified by oxygen and argon plasma. The water permeability of oxygen-plasma-modified membrane increases, and the chlorine resistance of argon-plasma-modified membrane increases. The spectra of the attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the contact angle of the water were analyzed to explain the improvement of the two performances of the composite membrane. The carboxyl groups were introduced when modified by oxygen plasma, and cross-linking occurred when modified by argon plasma. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
