This portfolio aims to review aspects of the sentencing of violent offenders under Victoria's criminal justice system. Focuses on a critique of current legislation, the way the rights of special needs offenders are acknowledged and enshrined in law, how these provisions are expressed in practice, and the clinical factors that contribute to, and influence, the dispositions individuals receive.

This study has revealed important ecological attributes of the southern saltmarsh mosquito in Victoria, resulting in an increased understanding of population peaks and their relation to Ross River virus disease and meteorological factors. Together with new information on its larval development, these results have further increased options for its control by local governments and public health authorities.

Investigates the extent of structural unemployment in country Victorian regions through analysing labour force statistics by region, industry, age, gender and occupation. It was found that female workers in country Victoria and the young are the most likely to be structurally unemployed. There are indications that the structural unemployment problem is getting worse despite the continued fall in the unemployment rate.

This thesis investigates the model of practice invoked by the Victorian financial counselling sector. It analyses why community development is inconsistent with the sector's casework approaches to practice, identifies the emergence of a different model of practice and explains financial counselling within the current theoretical context of risk society.

In 1852 thirty-seven Households from working class Catholic backgrounds emigrated from Moidart, Scotland, to the Colony of Port Phillip in Australia. This study personalises and contextualises the experiences of three generations in Scotland, on board ship and in Victoria concluding that upward mobility and economic security were achievable.

This thesis explored the factors relevant to decision-making when the defence of mental impairment is raised in Victoria. Findings indicate that disorder type, crime outcome, and the relationship between victim and offender were significantly associated with verdict decisions, while offender gender did not play a significant role in responsibility decisions. The portfolio discusses the role of co-morbid psychopathology in the assessment and treatment of veterans with chronic PTSD by presenting four case histories.

The thesis analyses judgments from the higher criminal courts in Victoria involving problem gamblers charged with serious crimes, investigates actions brought by gamblers against gaming establishments in the civil courts and examines the legislation governing gambling in Victoria and the effectiveness of recently introduced harm minimisation measures.

Results of fauna and vegetation surveys conducted around Portland Aluminium smelter between 1979 and 2004 found small mammal abundance and diversity had declined and changes in vegetation communities were related to changes in fire patterns, vegetation fragmentation and weed invasion. Small mammal numbers were greater in nearby National Parks.

This case study provided policy direction for post-compulsory education. It highlighted the need for a mandated responsibility for the provision of on-going transition advice and re-engagement programs for young people who have left school. It confirmed the complexity of the work of networks formed in order to improve educational pathways.
