Knowledge and competence are in important role in today’s demanding business environment where hard competition forces everyone to specialize and concentrate more to core competencies. Companies are outsourcing services, making processes more efficient and utilizing better their staff and available knowledge capital. It requires good strategic planning, process measuring and management and motivated staff, who is willing to continuously learn and absorb new information. This Thesis examines almost total IT service outsourcing to international service provider in situation where company previously had own IT. Work contains problematic situations during the change and suggestions how to improve services and understand the new model in a better way.

The target of this thesis is to evaluate a bid, project and resource management IT tool for service delivery process via proof-of-concept (POC) project to assess, if the tested software is an appropriate tool for the Case Company’s business requirements. Literature suggests that IT projects implementation is still a grey area in scientific research. Also, IT projects have a notably high rate of failure, one significant reason for this being insufficient planning. To tackle this risk, the Case Company decided to perform a POC project, which involved a hands-on testing period of the assessed system. End users from the business side feel that current, highly tailored project management tool is inflexible, difficult to use, and sets unnecessary limitations for the business. Semi-structured interviews and a survey form are used to collect information about current business practices and business requirements related to the IT tool. For the POC project, a project group involving members from each of the Case Company’s four business divisions was established to perform the hands-on testing. Based on data acquired during the interviews and the hands-on testing period, a target state was defined and a gap analysis was carried out by comparing the features provided by the current tool and the tested tool to the target state, which are, together with the current state description, the most important result of the thesis.

Itä-Porin kerrostalolähiöt ovat Porin suurin lähiöalue. Ne syntyivät kasvavan ja teollistuvan kaupungin tarpeisiin ja edustavat aikansa aluerakentamista. Asukkaat ja rakennuskanta ovat vuosien varrella ikääntyneet, mutta alueiden rauhallisuutta ja luontoa arvostetaan. Lähiöiden asukastoiminta on monipuolista, Itä-Porista löytyy myös vireää taidetoimintaa ja arvokasta rakennusperintöä. Turun yliopiston maisemantutkimus on tehnyt Itä-Porin lähiöiden laajan kulttuurikartoituksen, jossa kerättiin tietoa asukasryhmistä, toiminnasta, ympäristöstä ja tarpeista. Tulosten pohjalta tuotettiin yhdessä asukkaiden, taiteilijaryhmä T.E.H.D.A.S. ry:n ja kaupungin edustajien kanssa toimenpidesuunnitelma lähiöiden kehittämiseksi. Itä-Porin tulevaisuudelle on tärkeää, että lähiöitä kehitetään tasapuolisesti muun kaupungin kanssa. Tähän vaaditaan kaikkien osapuolten panostusta ja yhteistyötä.

Over the last 30 years, new technologies and globalization have radically changed the way in which marketing is conducted. However, whereas their effects on business in general have been widely discussed, the focus of the effects on marketing remains without clear recognition. Global research has been made to shed light onto the issue, but it has widely concentrated on the views of executives as well as the consumer markets. In addition, a research gap is existent in applying the concept of marketing change in a specific business-to-business (B2B) industry. Therefore, the main research question this study seeks to answer is: “How is contemporary marketing conducted in the high-technology industry?” In this research, the researcher considers the specific industry of high-technology. However, as the industry is comprised of differing markets, the focus will be given to one of the industry’s prime sectors – the information technology (IT) markets, where companies offer other firms products or services manufactured with advanced technology. The growing IT-market is considered of critical importance in the economies of technologically ready countries such as Finland, where this research is also conducted. Through multiple case studies the researcher aims to describe how the changes in technology, customer engagement and future trends have shaped the way in which successful high-tech marketing is conducted in today’s marketplace. Then, results derived from the empirical research are presented to the reader with links to existing literature. As a conclusion, a generalized framework is constructed to depict and ideal marketer-customer relationship, with emphasis on dynamic, two-way communication and its supporting elements of customer analytics, change adaptation, strategic customer communication and organizational support. From a managerial point of view, the research may provide beneficial information as contemporary marketing can yield profitable outcomes if managed correctly. As a new way to grasp competitive advantage, strategic marketing is much more data-driven and customer-focused than ever before. The study can also prove to be relevant for the academic communities, while its results may act as inspiring for new focus on the education trends of future marketers. This study was limited to the internal activities done at the high-tech industry, leaving out the considerations for co-marketing, marketing via business partners or marketing at other B2B-industries.

An emerging clinical entity that reproduces clinical manifestations similar to those observed in Lyme disease (LD) has been recently under discussion in Brazil. Due to etiological and laboratory particularities it is named LD-like syndrome or LD imitator syndrome. The condition is considered to be a zoonosis transmitted by ticks of the genus Amblyomma, possibly caused by interaction of multiple fastidious microorganisms originating a protean clinical picture, including neurological, osteoarticular and erythema migrans-like lesions. When peripheral blood of patients with LD-like syndrome is viewed under a dark-field microscope, mobile uncultivable spirochete-like bacteria are observed. PCR carried out with specific or conservative primers to recognize Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto or the genus Borrelia has been negative in ticks and in biological samples. Two different procedures, respectively involving hematoxylin and eosin staining of cerebrospinal fluid and electron microscopy analysis of blood, have revealed spirochetes not belonging to the genera Borrelia, Leptospira or Treponema. Surprisingly, co-infection with microorganisms resembling Mycoplasma and Chlamydia was observed on one occasion by electron microscopy analysis. We discuss here the possible existence of a new tick-borne disease in Brazil imitating LD, except for a higher frequency of recurrence episodes observed along prolonged clinical follow-up.

Toisen maailmansodan päättymisen ja Potsdamin sopimuksen seurauksena Saksa jakautui Länsi- ja Itä-Saksaksi. Länsi-Saksan hallinnosta vastasivat Yhdysvallat, Iso- Britannia ja Ranska. Itä-Saksasta puolestaan tuli kokonaisuudessaan Neuvostoliiton hallinnassa ollut alue. Neuvostoliiton ja länsivaltojen näkemykset siitä, miten sodanjälkeistä Saksaa tulisi hallinnoida, erosivat suuresti toisistaan alusta lähtien, ollen yksi merkittävimmistä tekijöistä kylmän sodan syttymisen taustalla. Koko kylmän sodan ajan mahdollisen aseellisen konfliktin nähtiin alkavan Euroopasta, mitä todennäköisimmin Saksasta. Tämän vuoksi länsivallat ja Neuvostoliitto sijoittivat alueelle paljon sotilaallista voimaa. Kyseisen sotilaallisen voiman keskittymän seurauksena syntyi kaksi maailmanhistorian suurinta sotilasliittoutumaa: Nato ja Varsovan liitto. Näistä kahdesta sotilasliitosta ensimmäiseksi luotiin Nato vuonna 1949. Vuonna 1955 Neuvostoliitto vastasi tähän uuteen strategisen tason uhkaan luomalla Varsovan liiton. Varsovan liiton perustamista seurasi Itä-Saksan kansanarmeijan eli NVA:n perustaminen. NVA:n joukot olivat Neuvostoliiton sotilasjohdon alaisuudessa toimineita joukkoja, ja ne varustettiin Neuvostoliiton parhaimmalla kalustolla läpi kylmän sodan. Tästä esimerkkinä NVA:n varustaminen ydinaseilla 1960-luvulla. Itä-Saksan miehitystä kesti vuoteen 1994 asti, jolloin viimeiset Neuvostoliiton aikaiset miehitysjoukot poistuivat sen maaperältä. Neuvostoliiton kaatumiseen asti Itä-Saksan miehitysjoukot olivat ylivoimaisesti suurin Neuvostojoukkojen keskittymä sen omien rajojen ulkopuolella. Aluetta miehitti jatkuvasti noin 16–24 divisioonaa, jotka olivat täysivahvuisia ja hyvin koulutettuja. Näiden joukkojen liikkeellelähtövalmius oli jopa alle 24 tuntia, joka antaa hyvän kuvan siitä, miten kriittinen alue Itä-Saksa Neuvostoliitolle todellisuudessa oli.

The goal of this research – which is to critically analyze current theories and methods of intangible assets evaluation and potentially develop and test new methodology based on the practical example(s) in the IT industry. Having this goal in mind the main research questions in this paper will be: What are advantages and disadvantages of the current practices of measurement intellectual capital or valuation of intangible assets? How to properly measure intellectual capital in IT? Resulting method exhibits a new unique approach to the IC measurement and potentially even larger field of application. Despite the fact that in this particular research, I focused my attention on IT (Software and Internet services cluster – to be exact), the logic behind the method is applicable within any industry since the method is designed to be fully compliant with measurement theory and thus can be properly scaled for any application. Building a new method is a difficult and iterative process: in the current iteration the method stands out as rather a theoretical concept rather than a business tool, however even current concept totally fulfills its purpose as a benchmarking tool for measuring intellectual capital in IT industry.

Asthma is characterized by reversible airway obstruction, airway hyperresponsiveness, and airway inflammation. Although our understanding of its pathophysiological mechanisms continues to evolve, the relative contributions of airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation are still debated. The first mechanism identified as important for asthma was bronchial hyperresponsiveness. In a second step, asthma was recognized also as an inflammatory disease, with chronic inflammation inducing structural changes or remodeling. However, persistence of airway dysfunction despite inflammatory control is observed in chronic severe asthma of both adults and children. More recently, a potential role for epithelial-mesenchymal communication or transition is emerging, with epithelial injury often resulting in a self-sustaining phenotype of wound repair modulation by activation/reactivation of the epithelial-mesenchymal trophic unit, suggesting that chronic asthma can be more than an inflammatory disease. It is noteworthy that the gene-environmental interactions critical for the development of a full asthma phenotype involve processes similar to those occurring in branching morphogenesis. In addition, a central role for airway smooth muscle in the pathogenesis of the disease has been explored, highlighting its secretory function as well as different intrinsic properties compared to normal subjects. These new concepts can potentially shed light on the mechanisms underlying some asthma phenotypes and improve our understanding of the disease in terms of the therapeutic strategies to be applied. How we understand asthma and its mechanisms along time will be the focus of this overview.

Aineeton pääoma nähdään organisaation keskeisenä kilpailutekijänä ja voimavarana. Se voi kuitenkin joissain tilanteissa olla organisaatiolle myös rasite tai jopa menestymistä heikentävä tekijä. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli laatia biopankin riskienhallinnalle malli, joka huomioi toimintaan vaikuttavat aineettomat riskitekijät ja toimii strategisena johtamisen ja toiminnan kehittämisen työvälineenä. Tutkimus toteutettiin tapaustutkimuksena, jossa käytettiin konstruktiivista tutkimusotetta. Biopankille luotiin konstruktio, riskienhallintamalli, jolla pyrittiin ratkaisemaan reaalimaailman ongelma ja samalla luomaan kontribuutiota tieteenalalle. Biopankki on uudentyyppinen organisaatio, joka kerää, hallinnoi ja säilyttää biologisia ihmisperäisiä näytteitä ja niihin liittyviä tietoja tulevaa tutkimusta varten. Toiminnan riskien taustasyyt ovat usein aineettomia, kuten toimintakulttuuri, asenne, osaaminen tai motivaatio. Tutkimuksessa löydettiin uusia biopankin toimintaan kytkeytyviä aineettomia riskejä koko aineettoman pääoman alueelta ja määriteltiin riskitasoihin perustuva lähestymistapa riskien hallintaan. Konstruktio aineettomien riskien hallintamalliksi sai selkeää vahvistusta tutkimuksen aineistosta, ja se voi toimia organisaation kehittämisen pohjana. Riskikartan luominen ja riskien arviointi ovat tekohetken poikkileikkauksia tilanteesta. Organisaation toiminta ja siihen kohdistuvat riskit ja mahdollisuudet muuttuvat ja kehittyvät. Riskien tunnistaminen lisää tietoa organisaatiosta ja sen toimintaympäristöstä, mikä luo puitteet myös uusien mahdollisuuksien tunnistamiselle. Sopivan riskienhallintamallin avulla voidaan löytää kilpailuetua suhteessa muihin organisaatioihin. Kilpailuetuna voi toimia myös muita parempi riskinkantokyky esimerkiksi toiminnan joustavuuden kautta.
