The paper presents data on authigenic carbonate distribution in Holocene - Upper Pleistocene deposits of the Okhotsk, Japan, East China, Philippine and South China Seas. Description of carbonate samples, their chemical and isotope compositions are given. Chemical analysis of the samples indicates that almost all authigenic carbonates are composed of calcite or magnesian calcite; and only in one case, of siderite. Oxygen isotopic composition (d18O) ranges from +37.7 to +26.1 per mil (SMOW); it is, probably, connected with different temperatures of carbonate formation. A distinct geographic regularity is traced. Decrease in d18O values is observed from the cold Okhotsk Sea to the warm South China Sea. A very wide range of carbon isotopic composition (d13C from -42 to +3.8 per mil) indicates different sources of carbonic acid required for formation of these carbonates. As a basis for carbon isotopic composition we can distinguish three sources of carbonic acid in the studied sediments: microbiological methane oxidation, organic matter destruction during sediment diagenesis, and dissolved organogenic limestone. Thus, formation of authigenic carbonates in sediments from the marginal seas of the Northwest Pacific results from: 1) sediment diagenesis, 2) methane oxidation in zones of gas anomalies, 3) their precipitation from the supersaturated by carbonates sea shoal waters of tropical sea lagoons.

The relationship between the distribution of benthic foraminifera and sediment type and depositional environment in the Arabian Sea is discussed. The benthic foraminiferal fauna were sampled in nineteen Recent surface sediment samples, and geochemical variables of the sediment of the same samples were measured. The water depths for the box core samples varies from 440 to 4040 m. A total of 103 species and six species-complexes were identified. The geochemical properties were found to correspond well to the sediment type and depositional environment and six different sediment/depositional environment types could be distinguished. Analysis of the benthic foraminiferal fauna reveals specific faunal assemblages that are closely related to these sediment/depositional environment types.

Research so far has provided little evidence that benthic biogeochemical cycling is affected by ocean acidification under realistic climate change scenarios. We measured nutrient exchange and sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) rates to estimate nitrification in natural coastal permeable and fine sandy sediments under pre-phytoplankton bloom and bloom conditions. Ocean acidification, as mimicked in the laboratory by a realistic pH decrease of 0.3, significantly reduced SCOC on average by 60% and benthic nitrification rates on average by 94% in both sediment types in February (pre-bloom period), but not in April (bloom period). No changes in macrofauna functional community (density, structural and functional diversity) were observed between ambient and acidified conditions, suggesting that changes in benthic biogeochemical cycling were predominantly mediated by changes in the activity of the microbial community during the short-term incubations (14 days), rather than by changes in engineering effects of bioturbating and bio-irrigating macrofauna. As benthic nitrification makes up the gross of ocean nitrification, a slowdown of this nitrogen cycling pathway in both permeable and fine sediments in winter, could therefore have global impacts on coupled nitrification-denitrification and hence eventually on pelagic nutrient availability.

During Leg 194, a series of eight sites was drilled through Oligocene-Holocene mixed carbonate and siliciclastic sediments on the Marion Plateau, northeast Australia. The major objective was to constrain the magnitude and timing of sea level changes in the Miocene. Site 1193, located on the Marion Plateau in 348 m of water ~80 km from the south central Great Barrier Reef margin, is probably the most important site for constraining the major middle to late Miocene sea level drop and reconstructing the evolution history of the Marion Plateau during the Miocene (Isern, Anselmetti, Blum, et al., 2002, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.194.2002). However, there is no biostratigraphic or other chronological data for the critical interval between 36 and 211 meters below seafloor (mbsf) (virtually the entire late and middle Miocene) due to poor core recovery and a virtual absence of planktonic microfossils in the core catcher samples examined aboard the ship (Isern, Anselmetti, Blum, et al., 2002, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.194.2002). The main purpose of this report is to refine the shipboard nannofossil biostratigraphy through examination of new samples and more detailed examination of those samples reported on board the ship. This results in a refinement for most of the nannofossil datums and provides some useful age information to fill the critical data gap for the middle Miocene. Previous Neogene nannofossil biostratigraphic studies of the Marion Plateau and Queensland Plateau include Gartner et al. (1993, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.133.213.1993) and Wei and Gartner (1993, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.133.216.1993).

A core of foraminiferal-coccolithic oozes filling a valley of the transform fault located at 29°40'S on the South Atlantic Ridge contains layers composed of angular fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks. They include many serpentinites deriving from serpentinized ultrabasic rocks, probably exposed on the lower section of the southern slope of the fault valley. A mineral and chemical description of these serpentinites is given.

Das Gollum Channel System mit dem untersuchten Kanal gc1 liegt in der Por- cupine Bucht südwestlich vor Irland. Während der ersten Messung im Jahr 2000 (ANT-XVII/4) fielen vier Kanalabschnitte mit markanten Rückstreuungen ins Au- ge. Diese Bereiche weisen eine abwechselnd starke und schwache Rückstreuinten- sität auf. Da der Schwerpunkt der Expedition ANT-XVII/4 auf der Erforschung der carbonate mounds lag, wurde eine genauere Untersuchung des Kanals während der Expedition ARK-XIX/3 (2003) nachgeholt. Mit dieser zweiten Messung wur- den die vier unterschiedlich rückstreuenden Sektoren bestätigt. Zusätzlich wurden Sedimentproben entnommen und Videos der Meeresbodenoberfläche aufgezeichnet. The (231Pa/230Th)xs,0 records obtained from two cores from the western (MD97-2138; 1°25'S, 146°24'E, 1900 m) and eastern (ODP Leg 138 Site 849, 0°11.59'N, 110°31.18'W, 3851 m) equatorial Pacific display similar variability over the last 85000 years, i.e. from isotopic stages 1 to 5a, with systematically higher values during the Holocene, isotopic stage 3 and isotopic stage 5a, and lower values, approaching the production rate ratio of the two isotopes (0.093), during the colder periods corresponding to isotopic stages 2 and 4. We have also measured the 230Th-normalized biogenic preserved and terrigenous fluxes, as well as major and trace elements concentrations, in both cores. The (231Pa/230Th)xs,0 results combined with the changes in preserved carbonate and opal fluxes at the eastern site indicate lower productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific during glacial periods. The (231Pa/230Th)xs,0 variations in the western equatorial Pacific (WEP) also seem to be controlled by productivity (carbonate and/or opal). The generally high (231Pa/230Th)xs,0 ratios (>0.093) of the profile could be due to opal and/or MnO2 in the sinking particles. The profiles of (231Pa/230Th)xs,0 and 230Th-normalized fluxes indicate a decrease in exported carbonate, and possibly opal, during isotopic stages 2 and 4 in MD97-2138. Using 230Th-normalized flux, we also show that sediments from the two cores were strongly affected by sediment redistribution by bottom currents suggesting a control of mass accumulation rates by sediment focusing variability.

The late Cenozoic deposits recovered at ODP Site 637 from the Iberian Abyssal Plain near the continental margin off northwestern Spain include three main facies groups. Turbidites are the dominant facies association (two-thirds of the total thickness), followed by pelagites (one-fourth), and subordinate amounts of contourites (one-tenth). Slump deposits occur locally in the upper Miocene and middle Pliocene. Turbidity currents and pelagic settling were the significant sediment depositional processes from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene, whereas bottom currents predominated during the late Miocene. Fine-grained, base-cut-out turbidites, normally starting with the Td division, are the most abundant sequence type. The pelagites include both carbonate-rich pelagic and hemipelagic facies. The two types of contourites, sandy and calcareous-rich or fine-grained terrigenous, record two types of bottom-current processes. The Cenozoic deposits at Site 637 show a general upward transition from contourites in the upper Miocene to turbidites in the Pliocene-Quaternary. The entire section is rhythmically bedded and has a poorly developed cyclic pattern defined by variations in the total carbonate content. The low sedimentation rates also show the same cyclicity, with lower values for the late Miocene and late Pliocene. This evolution reflects the predominant depositional processes and the dissolution of carbonates by a lower CCD during the late Miocene.

On the bed and on the ocean slope of the southern latitudinal part of the Mariana Trench ancient sediments, as well as sedimentary and igneous rocks are exposed. In the lower part of the sampled part of the studied section Late Oligocene to Early Miocene chalk-like limestones and marls occur. Upward marly tuffites and tuffs (apparently alternating with carbonate rocks) occur. These rocks are overlain by Early Miocene tuffaceous clays and siliceous-clayey muds. In the upper part of the section there are Pleistocene pelagic clays and ethmodiscus oozes.

Detailed biostratigraphy in Site 1006 based on planktonic foraminifers and nannofossils shows large-scale sedimentation rate variability in the Florida Strait west of the Great Bahama Bank. A 'floating' cyclostratigraphy based mainly on resistivity logs and magnetic susceptibility data has been fixed to the biostratigraphy in the absence of magnetostratigraphy. The strongest orbital cycle present is the precessional beat, which is present in the borehole logs throughout the record. Counting the cycles resulted in an accurate time scale and thus a sedimentation rate time series. Spectral analysis of the sedimentation rate time series shows that the short-term cycle of eccentricity (~125 k.y.) and the long term cycle of eccentricity (~400 k.y.) are pervasive throughout the Miocene record, together with the long-term ~2-m.y. eccentricity cycle. The Great Bahama Bank produced pulses of shallow carbonate input once every precessional (sea level) cycle during the Miocene and perhaps two pulses per cycle in the early Pliocene. The amount of sediment exported in these pulses appears to be controlled by eccentricity modulation of the precessional amplitude and therefore the amplitude of the sea-level rise. Finally, an increase in sedimentation rate just after the Miocene/Pliocene boundary is attributed to a change in the location and strength of sediment drift currents in the Florida Strait due to reorganization of the currents following the closure of the Panama Isthmus.

A geochemical study of sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Site 983 was conducted to examine low-frequency variations in carbonate content as expressed by blue-band reflectance (450-500 nm) over the last 1.2 Ma. Sedimentary percent organic carbon, percent carbonate, and excess barium (Ba[ex]) were used as the primary tools to evaluate the factors responsible for these long-term changes. We observe positive correlation between the mass-accumulation rate of various biogenic components and the mass-accumulation rate of Ba(ex), especially in sediments younger than ~600 ka. Deeper in the section (~600-1200 ka), the correlation between Ba(ex) and the other biogenic tracers is weak. The lack of correlation between Ba(ex) and biogenic carbonate likely results either from a higher supply of terrigenous material at that time (which confounds Ba[ex] estimation), or remobilization of Ba resulting from low pore-water sulfate ion concentrations, or both. Nonbiogenic sediments at Site 983, represented by Th, K2O, and the molar Ti/Al ratio, exhibit cyclic variations that represent mixing between continental and oceanic (i.e., basaltic) terrigenous sources. The timing of these cycles matches that of the major glacial-interglacial cycles, which suggests that they result from the supply of continental material as ice-rafted debris during glacial periods and fine-grained basaltic material by bottom currents during interglacial periods. Given these observations, the most likely causes for the low-frequency carbonate variations observed in the Site 983 sediments are shifts in surface productivity and, to a lesser extent, dilution by the input of terrigenous material.

Crystalline aggregates composed of calcium carbonate were recovered in the uppermost 50 m of Nankai Trough sediments during DSDP Leg 87A. These aggregates decomposed with time to masses of sandy calcite as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Petrographic and scanning electron microscopy revealed textures suggestive of a precursor phrase prior to calcite, and this precursor has been tentatively identified as the mineral ikaite, CaCO3*6H2O. Stable isotope data suggest a large component of terrigenous organic matter as the carbon source, consistent with the appearance of these aggregates in highly reducing pyritic sediments containing abundant plant remains. We propose that these nodules formed in euxinic basins on the upper part of the Trough slope under normal seafloor conditions of pressure and temperature. Calculated temperatures of formation of this phase are not unusually low. The specimens from Site 583 are the first reported occurrences of ikaite in active margin sediments.
