An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration influences climate both directly through its radiative effect (i.e., trapping longwave radiation) and indirectly through its physiological effect (i.e., reducing transpiration of land plants). Here we compare the climate response to radiative and physiological effects of increased CO2 using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) coupled Community Land and Community Atmosphere Model. In response to a doubling of CO2, the radiative effect of CO2 causes mean surface air temperature over land to increase by 2.86 ± 0.02 K (± 1 standard error), whereas the physiological effects of CO2 on land plants alone causes air temperature over land to increase by 0.42 ± 0.02 K. Combined, these two effects cause a land surface warming of 3.33 ± 0.03 K. The radiative effect of doubling CO2 increases global runoff by 5.2 ± 0.6%, primarily by increasing precipitation over the continents. The physiological effect increases runoff by 8.4 ± 0.6%, primarily by diminishing evapotranspiration from the continents. Combined, these two effects cause a 14.9 ± 0.7% increase in runoff. Relative humidity remains roughly constant in response to CO2-radiative forcing, whereas relative humidity over land decreases in response to CO2-physiological forcing as a result of reduced plant transpiration. Our study points to an emerging consensus that the physiological effects of increasing atmospheric CO2 on land plants will increase global warming beyond that caused by the radiative effects of CO2.

Seawater aging response was investigated in marine-grade glass/epoxy, glass/vinyl ester, carbon/epoxy and carbon/vinyl ester composites with respect to water uptake, interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, and tensile fracture surface observations. The reduction of mechanical properties was found to be higher in them initial stages which showed saturation in the longer durations of seawater immersion. The flexural strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) dropped by about 35% and 27% for glass/epoxy, 22% and 15% for glass/vinyl ester, 48% and 34% for carbon/epoxy 28%, and 21% carbon/vinyl ester composites respectively. The water uptake behavior of epoxy-based composites was inferior to that of the vinyl system.

Dipole moment measurements have been made in the case of a few aromatic hydrocarbon picrates, the values obtained being 2·18, 2·25, 2·97 (all in Debye units) for picrates of naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene respectively and the results discussed in terms of Mulliken's theory. Measurements have also been extended to include a few salt-like heterocyclic amine picrates.

Carbon disulphide, on treatment with alcoholic potash, can readily be oxidised quantitatively by chloramine-T, converting all the sulphur to sulphuric acid. Fourteen equivalents of the oxidant are consumed for every mole of carbon disulphide. Since excess of chloramine-T may be determined iodimetrically, this reaction may be used for the determination of carbon disulphide. It may also be applied to the determination of xanthates.

The transmission electron microscopy images of in situ prepared multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)and polyaniline (PANI) composites show that nanotubes are well dispersed in aqueous medium, and the nanofibers of PANI facilitate intertube transport. Although low temperature transport indicates variable range hopping (VRH) mechanism, the dc and ac conductivity become temperature independent as the MWNT content increases. The onset frequency for the increase in conductivity is observed to be strongly dependent on the MWNT weight percent, and the ac conductivity can be scaled onto a master curve. The negative magnetoresistance is attributed to the forward interference scattering mechanism in VRH transport. (C) 2010 American.

The mechanism of hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by m-hydroxybenzoate-4-hydroxylase and anthranilate hydroxylase from Aspergillus niger was investigated using superoxide dismutase from ovine erythrocytes. Inclusion of superoxide dismutase in the assay mixtures of the two enzymes resulted in complete inhibition of the hydroxylation reaction, indicating the possible involvement of superoxide anions (O2−) in these reactions.

The green nitrosobenzene monomer is reduced polarographically to phenylhydroxylamine in the pH range 4—9. Though this reduction is known to be a two-electron process, coulometry invariably gives a lower value of n because of the reaction of unreacted nitrosobenzene and the phenylhydroxylamine formed. The green monomer is attacked by mercury in acid medium. In alkaline medium, the green monomer undergoes a change that follows first-order kinetics with respect to nitrosobenzene. The rate of the transformation depends on the solvent. It decreases in the order acetone > ethanol > dioxan.

Durability is central to the commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The incorporation of TiO2 with platinum (Pt) ameliorates both the stability and catalytic activity of cathodes in relation to pristine Pt cathodes currently being used in PEFCs. PEFC cathodes comprising carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) exhibit higher durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance, and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of the Pt-TiO2/C cathodes is 10% after 5000 test cycles as against 28% for Pt/C cathodes. These data are in conformity with the electrochemical surface area and impedance values. Pt-TiO2/C cathodes can withstand even 10,000 test cycles with nominal effect on their performance. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and cross-sectional field-emission-scanning electron microscope studies on the catalytic electrodes reflect that incorporating TiO2 with Pt helps in mitigating the aggregation of Pt particles and protects the Nafion membrane against peroxide radicals formed during the cathodic reduction of oxygen. A polymer containing electron-rich aromatic donors (1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN)) was coerced into a folded state by an external folding agent that contained an electron-deficient aromatic acceptor (pyromellitic diimide (PM)) unit. The donor-containing polymer was designed to carry a tertiary amine moiety in the linking segment, which served as an H-bonding site for reinforcing the interaction with the acceptor containing folding agent that also bore a carboxylic acid group. The H-bonding interaction of the carboxylic acid and the tertiary amine brings the PDI unit between two adjacent DAN units along the polymer backbone to induce charge-transfer (C-T) interactions, and this in turn causes the polymer chain to form a pleated structure. Evidence for the formation of such a pleated structure was obtained from NMR titration studies and also by monitoring the C-T band in their UV-visible spectra. By varying the length of the segment that links the PDI acceptor to the carboxylic acid group, we showed that the most effective folding agent was the one that had a single carbon spacer, as evident from the highest value of the association constant. Control experiments with propionic acid clearly demonstrated the importance of the additional C-T interactions for venerating the folded structures. Further, solution viscosity measurements in the presence of varying amounts of the folding agent revealed a gradual stiffening of the chain in the case of the PDI carrying carboxylic acid, whereas no such affect was seen in the case of simple propionic acid. These observations were supported by D FT calculations of the interactions of a dimeric model of the polymer with the various folding agents; here too the stability of the complex was seen to be highest in the case of the single carbon spacer.

We use atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the diffusion of water molecules confined inside narrow (6,6) carbon nanorings. The water molecules form two oppositely polarized chains. It is shown that the effective interaction between these two chains is repulsive in nature. The computed mean-squared displacement (MSD) clearly shows a scaling with time

Biodiesel was synthesized in supercritical fluids by two routes: non-catalytically in supercritical alcohols and by enzyme catalysis in supercritical carbon dioxide. Two oils, sesame oil and mustard oil, and two alcohols, methanol and ethanol, were used for the synthesis. Complete conversion was observed for synthesis in supercritical alcohols whereas only a maximum of 70% conversion was observed for the enzymatic synthesis in supercritical carbon dioxide. For the synthesis in supercritical alcohols, the activation energies and pseudo-first order rate constants were determined. For the reactions in supercritical carbon dioxide, a mechanism based on ping pong bi-bi was proposed and the kinetic parameters were determined. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Hydroxylation of aromatic compounds was observed in NADH-phenazine methosulfate-O2 model system known to generate superoxide anions (Image ). Addition of superoxide dismutase prepared from ovine erythrocytes to this hydroxylating system resulted in complete inhibition, suggesting an involvement of Image in aromatic hydroxylations.
