We investigate aragonitic skeletons of the Caribbean sclerosponge Ceratoporella nicholsoni from Jamaica, 20 m below sea level (mbsl), and Pedro Bank, 125 mbsl. We use d18O and Sr/Ca ratios as temperature proxies to reconstruct the Caribbean mixed layer and thermocline temperature history since 1400 A.D. with a decadal time resolution. Our age models are based on U/Th dating and locating of the radiocarbon bomb spike. The modern temperature difference between the two sites is used to tentatively calibrate the C. nicholsoni Sr/Ca thermometer. The resulting calibration points to a temperature sensitivity of Sr/Ca in C. nicholsoni aragonite of about -0.1 mmol/mol/K. Our Sr/Ca records reveal a pronounced warming from the early 19th to the late 20th century, both at 20 and 125 mbsl. Two temperature minima in the shallow water record during the late 17th and early 19th century correspond to the Maunder and Dalton sunspot minima, respectively. Another major cooling occurred in the late 16th century and is not correlatable with a sunspot minimum. The temperature contrast between the two sites decreased from the 14th century to a minimum in the late 17th century and subsequently increased to modern values in the early 19th century. This is interpreted as a long-term deepening and subsequent shoaling of the Caribbean thermocline. The major trends of the Sr/Ca records are reproduced in both specimens but hardly reflected in the d18O records.

Bulk dissolution rates for sediment from ODP Site 984A in the North Atlantic are determined using the 234U/238U activity ratios of pore water, bulk sediment, and leachates. Site 984A is one of only several sites where closely spaced pore water samples were obtained from the upper 60 meters of the core; the sedimentation rate is high (11-15 cm/ka), hence the sediments in the upper 60 meters are less than 500 ka old. The sediment is clayey silt and composed mostly of detritus derived from Iceland with a significant component of biogenic carbonate (up to 30%). The pore water 234U/238U activity ratios are higher than seawater values, in the range of 1.2 to 1.6, while the bulk sediment 234U/238U activity ratios are close to 1.0. The 234U/238U of the pore water reflects a balance between the mineral dissolution rate and the supply rate of excess 234U to the pore fluid by a-recoil injection of 234Th. The fraction of 238U decays that result in a-recoil injection of 234U to pore fluid is estimated to be 0.10 to 0.20 based on the 234U/238U of insoluble residue fractions. The calculated bulk dissolution rates, in units of g/g/yr are in the range of 0.0000004 to 0.000002 1/yr. There is significant down-hole variability in pore water 234U/238U activity ratios (and hence dissolution rates) on a scale of ca. 10 m. The inferred bulk dissolution rate constants are 100 to 1000 times slower than laboratory-determined rates, 100 times faster than rates inferred for older sediments based on Sr isotopes, and similar to weathering rates determined for terrestrial soils of similar age. The results of this study suggest that U isotopes can be used to measure in situ dissolution rates in fine-grained clastic materials. The rate estimates for sediments from ODP Site 984 confirm the strong dependence of reactivity on the age of the solid material: the bulk dissolution rate (R_d) of soils and deep-sea sediments can be approximately described by the expression R_d ~ 0.1 1/age for ages spanning 1000 to 500,000,000 yr. The age of the material, which encompasses the grain size, surface area, and other chemical factors that contribute to the rate of dissolution, appears to be a much stronger determinant of dissolution rate than any single physical or chemical property of the system.

Results of geological studies at the submarine Vityaz Ridge carried out during cruises 37 and 41 of R/V Akademik Lavrent'ev in 2005 and 2006 are reported. The studied area is located at an near-island trench of the slope in the central part of the Kuril Island arc. Morphologically it consists of two parts: an inner volcanic arc represented by the Great Kuril Range and an outer arc corresponding to the submarine Vityaz Ridge. Diverse rocks composing the basement and the sedimentary cover of the ridge were recovered by dredging. Based on K-Ar dating and geochemistry, volcanics were divided into Paleocene, Eocene, late Oligocene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene complexes. Each of the complexes reflects a tectonomagmatic stage in the ridge evolution. Geochemical and isotope data on the volcanics indicate contribution of ancient crustal material in the magma source and, correspondingly, formation of this structure on the continental basement. Two-stage model ages (TDM2) vary in a wide range from zero values in mafic rocks to 0.77 Ga in felsic varieties, pointing to presence of Precambrian protolith in the source of the felsic rocks of the Vityaz Ridge. The Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanics are classed with tholeiitic, calc-alkaline, and subalkaline series, which differ in alkali contents and REE fractionation. Values of (La/Sm)_n and (La/Yb)_n ratios vary from 0.74 and 0.84 in the tholeiitic varieties to 1.19 and 1.44 in the calc-alkaline and 2.32 and 3.73 in the subalkaline rocks. All three varieties occur within the same volcanic edifices and formed during differentiation of magmatic melts that were channeled along fault zones from the mantle source slightly enriched in crustal component.

We present a record encompassing marine isotope stages 7-1 from a hitherto unexplored and heavily ice-covered area of the Arctic Ocean, the Lomonosov Ridge off the northern Greenland-Canada continental margin, using nannofossil and benthic foraminifera stratigraphy. Planktic foraminifera assemblages are used as a key paleoceanographic proxy, and a surprisingly large variability is found for an interior Arctic Ocean site. Abundant small (63-125 µm) subpolar Turborotalita quinqueloba occur in two sections, possibly representing substages 5e (last interglacial) and 5a (warm interstadial). However, the present-day circulation pattern and the very distant location of high productive regions cannot explain such high abundances of subpolar specimens in the interior, perennially sea ice-covered Arctic Ocean. Hence our proxy record indicates that last interglacial sea ice concentrations were reduced off some areas of northern Greenland-Canada. Whether this was part of a larger regional pattern or it represents the influence of polynya areas with locally increased productivity remains to be solved. With respect to glacial conditions, increased ice-rafted debris (IRD) deposition in the area appears to be associated with glacial stages 6, 4, and late 3. Stage 2 sediments (including the Last Glacial Maximum) are condensed with a sparse IRD content only.

A substantial extinction of megafauna occurred in Australia between 50 and 45 kyr ago, a period that coincides with human colonization of Australia. Large shifts in vegetation also occurred around this time, but it is unclear whether the vegetation changes were driven by the human use of fire-and thus contributed to the extinction event-or were a consequence of the loss of megafaunal grazers. Here we reconstruct past vegetation changes in southeastern Australia using the stable carbon isotopic composition of higher plant wax n-alkanes and levels of biomass burning from the accumulation rates of the biomarker levoglucosan from a well-dated sediment core offshore from the Murray-Darling Basin. We find that from 58 to 44 kyr ago, the abundance of plants with the C-4 carbon fixation pathway was generally high-between 60 and 70%. By 43 kyr ago, the abundance of C-4 plants dropped to 30% and biomass burning increased. This transient shift lasted for about 3,000 years and came after the period of human arrival and directly followed megafauna extinction at 48.9-43.6 kyr ago. We conclude that the vegetation shift was not the cause of the megafaunal extinction in this region. Instead, our data are consistent with the hypothesis that vegetation change was the consequence of the extinction of large browsers and led to the build-up of fire-prone vegetation in the Australian landscape.

The Proterozoic country rock at Ahlmannryggen consists of flat lying basaltic lo andesitic lava flows and sedimentary rocks intruded by dioritic sills (Borgmassivet Intrusives). The suites display a typical platform cover. K-Ar age determinations gave maximum ages of about 1200 Ma on the magmatic rocks. All these suites were intruded bv Proterozoic dikes dated also at about 1200 Ma. Localiy the Proterozoic rocks have a slaty cleavage grading into mylonitic texture which strike parallel to the Jutul Penck graben. Such tectonic structures were dated at 525 Ma using syntectonic white micas. Evidence of the break-up of Gondwana during the Early Jurassic/Triassic is given by dikes at Ahlmannryggen and lava flows, dikes and sills at Vestfjella. At Ahlmannryggen the initial rift phase is documented by the development of the Jutul Penck graben and the intrusion of the 200-250 Ma continental-tholeiitic dikes striking parallel to the graben axis. The lava flows, dikes and sills at Vestfjella represent a later stage of the Gondwana break-up at about 180 Ma that probably reflects the initial stage of the opening of the Weddell Sea.

Vertical permeability and sediment consolidation measurements were taken on seven whole-round drill cores from Sites 1253 (three samples), 1254 (one sample), and 1255 (three samples) drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 205 in the Middle America Trench off of Costa Rica's Pacific Coast. Consolidation behavior including slopes of elastic rebound and virgin compression curves (Cc) was measured by constant rate of strain tests. Permeabilities were determined from flow-through experiments during stepped-load tests and by using coefficient of consolidation (Cv) values continuously while loading. Consolidation curves and the Casagrande method were used to determine maximum preconsolidation stress. Elastic slopes of consolidation curves ranged from 0.097 to 0.158 in pelagic sediments and 0.0075 to 0.018 in hemipelagic sediments. Cc values ranged from 1.225 to 1.427 for pelagic carbonates and 0.504 to 0.826 for hemipelagic clay-rich sediments. In samples consolidated to an axial stress of ~20 MPa, permeabilities determined by flow-through experiments ranged from a low value of 7.66 x 10**-20 m**2 in hemipelagic sediments to a maximum value of 1.03 x 10**-16 m**2 in pelagic sediments. Permeabilities calculated from Cv values in the hemipelagic sediments ranged from 4.81 x 10**-16 to 7.66 x 10**-20 m**2 for porosities 49.9%-26.1%.

Oxygen isotope ratios were obtained from authigenic clinoptilolites from Barbados Accretionary Complex, Yamato Basin, and Exmouth Plateau sediments (ODP Sites 672, 797, and 762) in order to investigate the isotopic fractionation between clinoptilolite and pore water at early diagenetic stages and low temperatures. Dehydrated clinoptilolites display isotopic ratios for the zeolite framework (delta 18Of) that extend from +18.7? to +32.8? (vs. SMOW). In combination with associated pore water isotope data, the oxygen isotopic fractionation between clinoptilolite and pore fluids could be assessed in the temperature range from 25ºC to 40ºC. The resulting fractionation factors of 1.032 at 25ºC and 1.027 at 40ºC are in good agreement with the theoretically determined oxygen isotope fractionation between clinoptilolite and water. Calculations of isotopic temperatures illustrate that clinoptilolite formation occurred at relatively low temperatures of 17ºC to 29ºC in Barbados Ridge sediments and at 33ºC to 62ºC in the Yamato Basin. These data support a low-temperature origin of clinoptilolite and contradict the assumption that elevated temperatures are the main controlling factor for authigenic clinoptilolite formation. Increasing clinoptilolite delta18Of values with depth indicate that clinoptilolites which are now in the deeper parts of the zeolite-bearing intervals had either formed at lower temperatures (17-20ºC) or under closed system conditions.

The large-diameter piston core LL44-GPC3 from the central North Pacific Ocean records continuous sedimentation of eolian dust since the Late Cretaceous. Two intervals resolved by Nd and Pb isotopic data relate to dust coming from America (prior to ~40 Ma) and dust coming from Asia (since ~40 Ma). The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) separates these depositional regimes today and may have been at a paleolatitude of ~23°N prior to 40 Ma. Such a northerly location of the ITCZ is consistent with sluggish atmospheric circulation and warm climate for the Northern Hemisphere of the early to middle Eocene. Since ~40 Ma, correlations between Nd (~7.55 > epsilon-Nd(t) > ~10.81) and Pb (18.625 < 206/4Pb < 18.879; 15.624 < 207/4Pb < 15.666; 38.611 < 208/4Pb < 38.960; 0.8294 < 207/6Pb < 0.8389; 2.0539 < 208/6Pb < 2.0743) isotopes reflect the progressive drying of central Asia triggered by the westward retreat of the paleo-Tethys. Comparisons between the changes with time in the isotopically well-defined dust flux and Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of Pacific deep water allow one to draw two major conclusions: (1) dust-bound Nd became a resolvable contribution to Pacific seawater only after the one order of magnitude increase in dust flux starting at ~3.5 Ma. Therefore eolian Nd was unimportant for Pacific seawater Nd prior to 3.5 Ma. (2) The lack of a response of Pacific deep water Pb to this huge flux increase suggests that dust-bound Pb has never been important. Instead, mobile Pb associated with island arc volcanic exhalatives probably consists of a significant contribution to Pacific deep water Pb and possibly to seawater elsewhere far away from landmasses.

Paleomagnetic measurements were made on 913 samples from 11 holes (626B, 626C, 627B, 628A, 630A, 631A, 632A, 632B, 633A, 634A, and 635B) drilled in and around the Bahamas carbonate bank during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 101. These samples displayed a wide range of magnetic intensities (from about 1.0 A/m to 1.6 * 10**- 6 A/m) and magnetic behavior. Most samples were weakly magnetized and had low mean destructive fields; however, sediments from sections of several holes were strongly magnetic with stable magnetizations. Magnetic-polarity interpretations were made on a Campanian unit from Hole 627B, a mid-Oligocene unit from Hole 628A, and a Plio-Pleistocene section from Hole 633A. Sediments in the upper parts of Holes 627B, 632A, and 633A have high magnetic intensities that decay 2 to 3 orders of magnitude over depths of 5 to 18 mbsf. The pattern of decline of the magnetism and the change in mean destructive fields and geochemical conditions in these holes are consistent with diagenetic dissolution of the magnetic minerals in a suboxic or anoxic-sulfidic environment. Paleolatitudes were calculated from samples from 16 time units in 7 holes and compared to the apparent polar wander path of the North American plate.

We have determined the helium abundance and isotopic composition of seafloor carbonate sediments from the flanks of the Ontong Java Plateau, western equatorial Pacific Ocean (ODP Site 806). These results provide a two million year record of the burial flux of extraterrestrial 3He, which we believe is a proxy for the terrestrial accretion rate of interplanetary dust particles. The 3He burial flux prior to ~700 ka was relatively low, ~0.5 pcc/cm**2/kyr, but from 700 ka to the present, the burial flux gradually increased to a value of ~1.0 pcc/cm**2/kyr. 100 kyr periodicity in the 3He burial flux is apparent over the last 700 kyr and correlates with the oxygen isotope record of global climate, with high 3He burial fluxes associated with interglacial periods. This periodicity and phase are consistent with previous 3He measurements in North Atlantic sediments. Although 100 kyr periodicity in 3He burial flux is in agreement with recent predictions of the accretion rate of interplanetary dust based on a model of the orbital evolution of asteroidal debris, the measurements and predictions differ by one half cycle in phase. Nevertheless, our observations suggest the terrestrial accretion rate of interplanetary dust is controlled by orbital eccentricity and/or inclination relative to the solar-system invariable plane. Such control is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the hypothesis of that variations in extraterrestrial dust accretion modulates terrestrial climate with a 100 kyr period. We also identify several brief (<25 kyr) intervals of strongly enhanced 3He burial, possibly related to random and transient fluctuations in the accretion rate of asteroidal or cometary dust particles.

Changes in the Southeast Asia monsoon winds and surface circulation patterns since the last glaciation are inferred using multiple paleoceanographic indicators including planktic foraminifer faunal abundances, fauna and alkenones sea-surface temperature (SST) estimates, oxygen and carbon isotopes of planktic and benthic foraminifers, and sedimentary fluxes of carbonates and organic carbon obtained from deep-sea core SCS90-36 from the South China Sea (SCS) (17°59.70'N, 111°29.64'E at water depth 2050 m). All these paleoceanographic evidences indicate marked changes in the SCS ocean system over the last glacial toward the Holocene. Planktic foraminiferal faunal SST estimates show stable warm-season SST of 28.6°C, close to the modern value, throughout the glacial-interglacial cycle. In contrast, cold-season SST increases gradually from 23.6°C in the last glacial to a mean value of 26.4°C in the Holocene with a fluctuation of about 3°C during 13-16 ka. SST estimates by UK'37 method reveal less variability and are in average 1-3°C lower than the fauna-derived winter-season SST. These patterns reveal that the seasonality of the SST is not only higher by about 3-4°C in the glacial, but also a function of the winter season SST. Sedimentation rates decrease from the last glacial-deglacial stage to the Holocene due to a reduction in supply of terrigenous components, which led to an increase of carbonate contents. Total organic carbon (TOC) contents of primarily marine sources decrease from the last glacial-deglacial to the Holocene. The last deglaciation is also characterized by high surface productivity as indicated by increased ketones abundances and high mass accumulation rates (MAR) of the TOC and carbonates. The gradient of planktic foraminifer ocygen and carbon isotopes of between surface dwellers and deep dwellers increases significantly toward Termination I and Holocene, and is indiscernibly small in the carbon isotope gradient of between 14 and 24 ka, revealing a deep-mixing condition in surface layers prior to 10 ka. The glacial-interglacial fluctuation of the carbon isotope value of a benthic foraminifer is 0.61%. which is significantly larger than a global mean value. The large carbon isotope fluctuation indicates an amplification of marginal-sea effects which is most likely resulted from an increase in surface productivity in the northern SCS during the last glacial-deglacial stage. The multiple proxies consistently indicate that the last glacial-deglacial stage winter monsoon in the Southeast Asia was probably strengthened in the northern SCS, leading to a development of deep-mixing surface layer conditions and a more efficient nutrient cycling which supports more marine organic carbon production.

In a study of ODP Hole 689B no iridium (Ir) anomaly was found in Sections 1 through 6 of Core 25X or in Core 26X from the top down to section 2, 3-12 cm. The background Ir abundance averaged 11 parts per trillion (ppt) and a clay-enriched region had nearly the same average, 26 ± 12 ppt. If the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) contact is in the region studied, then sedimentation was not continuous, and the K-T boundary was probably either not deposited or it was eroded away. In a study of Cores 15X and 16X of ODP Hole 690C, an iridium peak with a maximum abundance of 1566 ± 222 ppt was found in Section 4 of Core 15X at 39-40 cm with a half-width of 6.6 cm. Background abundances were ~15 ppt and distinctly higher Ir abundances were observed from 119 cm below to 72 cm above the main peak. The Ir distribution below the main peak is attributed to bioturbation by organisms with burrows extending at least 0.4 m. The Ir distribution above the main peak may be due to the same cause but other explanations may be significant. There are variable enrichments of clay in the mainly CaCO3 sediment of Core 15X, and the stratigraphically lowest part of the most abundant clay deposits is found (within 2 cm) in the same position as the main Ir peak. The clay deposit, which is estimated to be about 50% of the sediment, extends upward ~19 cm and then slowly decreases to a background level of 10% over 1 m. The degree of homogeneity of the clay-rich interval suggests it was not due to episodic volcanism but may have been due to a decrease of the CaCO3 deposition rate which was possibly triggered by the impact of a large asteroid or comet on the Earth.

Proxy records of hydrologic variability in the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) have revealed wide-scale changes in past convective activity in response to orbital and sub-orbital climate forcings. However, attributing proxy responses to regional changes in WPWP hydrology versus local variations in precipitation requires independent records linking the terrestrial and marine realms. We present high-resolution stable isotope, UK'37 sea-surface temperature, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning and coccolithophore-derived paleoproductivity records covering the past 120 ka from International Marine Global Change (IMAGES) Program Core MD06-3075 (6°29' N, 125°50' E, water depth 1878 m), situated in the Davao Gulf on the southern side of Mindanao. XRF-derived log(Fe/Ca) records provide a robust proxy for runoff-driven sedimentary discharge from Mindanao, whilst past changes in local productivity are associated with variable freshwater runoff and stratification of the surface layer. Significant precessional-scale variability in sedimentary discharge occurred during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5, with peaks in discharge contemporaneous with Northern Hemisphere summer insolation minima. We attribute these changes to the latitudinal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over the WPWP together with variability in the strength of the Walker circulation acting on precessional timescales. Between 60 and 15 ka sedimentary discharge at Mindanao was muted, displaying little orbital- or millennial-scale variability, likely in response to weakened precessional insolation forcing and lower sea level driving increased subsidence of air masses over the exposed Sunda Shelf. These results highlight the high degree of local variability in the precipitation response to past climate changes in the WPWP.
