Este libro estudia la agenda educativa del liberalismo-radical que gobernó el Ecuador entre 1895 y 1912, luego de la Revolución liberal. Procura responder algunos interrogantes en torno a los temas de educación en la agenda pública de los dirigentes políticos de esa tendencia, al tiempo que busca desvelar lo que lograron ejecutar y aquello que quedó como asignatura pendiente. Su propósito también es revisar si dicha agenda constituyó una ruptura con lo que hasta ese momento se había realizado en cuanto a instrucción pública primaria, en general, y de las mujeres, en particular, o si continuó con la lógica de los gobiernos anteriores respecto al fortalecimiento del Estado y la ampliación de su control hacia periferias que aún se encontraban fuera de su poder en el período analizado. La autora, mediante el análisis de los documentos de la época, demuestra que el proyecto de instrucción pública laica y gratuita del liberalismo-radical tuvo demoras y dificultades para concretarse en el caso de los varones, y no llegó a ejecutarse en lo que se refiere a la formación de las niñas, pese a los esfuerzos que en ello empeñaron.

En este libro se analiza la fiesta del Padre Eterno, manifestación religiosa de gran significación para la comunidad indígena de Gueseche, parroquia de Licto, en la provincia ecuatoriana de Chimborazo. Se concentra en la historia y evolución del rito, y en las consecuencias de su práctica en la familia, en la comunidad y en la vida cotidiana. La pregunta central del estudio es: ¿cómo se expresan las negociaciones culturales, las resignificaciones, la resistencia, la construcción de la identidad y las luchas libertarias a través del rito religioso? El autor reconstruye la fiesta desde la memoria colectiva. Por medio de entrevistas, relatos, antiguos documentos, fotografías y de la convivencia, la observación y la escucha, emergen elementos simbólicos que descubren al lector la compleja riqueza del imaginario de esta co munidad rural. Analiza la mitificación y mercantilización de la fiesta, las cambiantes interpretaciones y resignificaciones que son consecuencia de la realidad globalizante. Describe el simbolismo de los rituales profano-sacrales como intentos de conservación de la identidad y, al mismo tiempo, de resistencia contra la homogeneización de la cultura que pretende la globalización. La investigación concluye que la praxis religiosa tiene que ser intercultural y liberadora, y que debe abrirse más allá de las barreras culturales, sociales y económicas para refundar la esperanza en los cambios que se viven y en los venideros, y para aportar la construcción de una sociedad plural.

Los países en desarrollo tienen una desventaja que desequilibra el régimen internacional de cambio climático y sus negociaciones. Esta desventaja no se debe solamente a que cuentan con una menor representación en comités, paneles o juntas ejecutivas, o a la falta de recursos para asistir a las sesiones; también se relaciona con las capacidades diferenciadas que tienen sus delegaciones, y la preparación con la que estas llegan a las sesiones de negociación, factores que determinan en gran medida el aporte que cada país puede ofrecer al proceso. Lamentablemente, esto se traduce en decenas de países que asisten para «tomar nota» de discusiones que otros lideran, avalando resultados vinculantes que después deberán implementar. En los países de América Latina, este es un problema real y resta potencial al rol que podría tener la región. El libro aborda este problema ofreciendo un recuento del proceso de negociaciones internacionales que se maneja en la Convención Marco de Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático. Provee insumos para las reflexiones críticas que sobre él puedan existir para superar las dificultades de los países en desarrollo. Y plantea algunas perspectivas para el futuro del régimen climático y del acuerdo que se está negociando para concretarse en París a fines de 2015, con la seguridad de que estos elementos son cruciales para garantizar una participación más activa y una formación de negociadores climáticos que la región latinoamericana necesita con urgencia.

Unveiled by the European Commission on July 3rd, the proposed Regulation on key information documents (KID) for packaged retail investment products (PRIPs) represents a step forward in enhancing the protection of retail investors and advancing the single market for financial services. While acknowledging in this Commentary that the KID is a commendable effort, ECMI/CEPS researcher Mirzha de Manuel Aramendía observes that pre-contractual disclosure is just one of the pieces in the jigsaw puzzle of investor protection and regrets that other pieces, such as MiFID and the IMD, are not so ambitiously constructed.

The aims were to examine ovarian expression of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) ligands/receptor mRNAs in the chicken and to test the hypothesis that theca-derived BMP(s) modulates granulosa cell function in a paracrine manner. RT-PCR revealed expression of multiple BMPs in granulosa and theca cells from prehierarchical and preovulatory follicles with greater expression in theca cells; both cell types expressed BMP receptors-1A, -1B and -II consistent with tissue responsiveness. Preovulatory granulosa cells F1, F2 and F3/4) were cultured with BMP-6 (expressed by theca but not granulosa) in the presence/absence of LH, FSH or 8-Br-cAMP. RMP-6 increased 'basal' and gonadotrophin-induced inhibin-A and progesterone secretion by each cell type but did not enhance the effect of 8-Br-cAMP. This indicates that the observed synergism between BMP-6 and gonadotrophin might involve BMP-induced up-regulation of gonadotrophin receptors. In support of this, BMP-6 alone increased LH-receptor (LHR) mRNA in F1 cells and FSH-receptor (FSHR) mRNA in F1, F2 and F3/4 cells. RMP-6 also enhanced LH/FSH-induced LHR transcript amount in each cell type but did not raise FSHR transcript amounts above those induced by BMP-6 alone. To further explore BMP6 action on inhibin-A secretion, we quantified inhibin/activin subunits (alpha, beta(A), beta(B)) mRNAs. Consistent with its effect on inhibin-A secretion, BMP-6 enhanced 'basal' expression of alpha- and beta(A)-Subunit mRNA in F1, F2 and F3/4 cells, and beta(B)-subunit mRNA in F3/4 cells. BMP-6 markedly enhanced FSH/LH-induced expression of alpha-subunit in all follicles and FSH-induced beta(A)-subunit in F2 and F3/4 follicles but not in F1 follicles. Neither BMP-6 alone, nor FSH/LH alone, affected 'basal' OB mRNA abundance. However, co-treatment with gonadotrophin and BMP-6 greatly increased beta(B)-subunit expression, the response being lowest in F1 follicles and greatest in F3/4 follicles. Collectively, these results support the hypothesis that intra-ovarian OMPs of thecal origin have a paracrine role in modulating granulosa cell function in the chicken in a preovulatory stage-dependent manner.

Natural killer (NK) cell recognition of influenza virus-infected cells involves hemagglutinin (HA) binding to sialic acid (SA) on activating NK receptors. SA also acts as a receptor for the binding of influenza virus to its target host cells. The SA binding properties of H3N2 influenza viruses have been observed to change during circulation in humans: recent isolates are unable to agglutinate chicken red blood cells and show reduced affinity for synthetic glycopolymers representing SA-alpha-2,3-lactose (3'SL-PAA) and SA-alpha-2,6-N-acetyl lactosamine (6'SLN-PAA) carbohydrates. Here, NK lysis of cells infected with human H3N2 influenza viruses isolated between 1969 and 2003 was analyzed. Cells infected with recent isolates (1999 to 2003) were found to be lysed less effectively than cells infected with older isolates (1969 to 1996). This change occurred concurrently with the acquisition of two new potential glycosylation site motifs in RA. Deletion of the potential glycosylation site motif at 133 to 135 in HA1 from a recent isolate partially restored the agglutination phenotype to a recombinant virus, indicating that the HA-SA interaction is inhibited by the glycosylation modification. Deletion of either of the recently acquired potential glycosylation sites from HA led to increased NK lysis of cells infected with recombinant viruses carrying modified HA. These results indicate that alterations in RA glycosylation may affect NK cell recognition of influenza virus-infected cells in addition to virus binding to host cells.

The synthesis and extraction of americium(III) and europium(III) from aqueous nitric acid solutions by the new BTBP ligands 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7- tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrofuro[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP), and 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrothieno[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)- 2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP) is described. The affinity for Am(III) and the selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) of Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP were generally higher than for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP. For both ligands, the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) from 3 M HNO3 into 3 mM organic solutions varied with the diluent used. The highest distribution ratios and separation factors observed were in cyclohexanone and 2-methylcyclohexanone, respectively. For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, there is a strong correlation between the distribution ratio for Am(III) and the permittivity of the diluent used. With 1-octanol as the diluent, low distribution ratios (D(Am) < 1) were observed for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP although this ligand extracts Am(III) selectively (SFAm/Eu = 16-46 from 1-4 M HNO3). For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, Am(III) is extracted as the disolvate. The distribution ratios for Am(III), and the separation factors for Am(III) over Eu(III) are both significantly higher for CyMe4-BTBP than they are for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP and Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP in cyclohexanone. Changing the diluent from cyclohexanone to 2-methylcyclohexanone leads to a decrease in D(Am) but an increase in SFAm/Eu for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP.

A cross-sectional analysis of ethnic differences in dietary intake, insulin sensitivity and beta-cell function, using the intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), was conducted on 497 healthy adult participants of the ‘Reading, Imperial, Surrey, Cambridge, and Kings’ (RISCK) study. Insulin sensitivity (Si) was significantly lower in African-Caribbean (AC) and South Asian (SA) participants [IVGTT-Si; AC: 2.13 vs SA: 2.25 vs white-European (WE): 2.84 (×10−4 mL µU min)2, p < 0.001]. AC participants had a higher prevalence of anti-hypertensive therapy (AC: 19.7% vs SA: 7.5%), the most cardioprotective lipid profile [total:high-density lipoprotein (HDL); AC: 3.52 vs SA: 4.08 vs WE: 3.83, p = 0.03] and more pronounced hyperinsulinaemia [IVGTT–acute insulin response (AIR)] [AC: 575 vs SA: 428 vs WE: 344 mL/µU/min)2, p = 0.002], specifically in female participants. Intake of saturated fat and carbohydrate was lower and higher in AC (10.9% and 50.4%) and SA (11.1% and 52.3%), respectively, compared to WE (13.6% and 43.8%, p < 0.001). Insulin resistance in ACs is characterised by ‘normal’ lipid profiles but high rates of hypertension and pronounced hyperinsulinaemia.

Little is known about why people differ in their levels of academic motivation. This study explored the etiology of individual differences in enjoyment and self-perceived ability for several school subjects in nearly 13,000 twins aged 9 to 16 from 6 countries. The results showed a striking consistency across ages, school subjects, and cultures. Contrary to common belief, enjoyment of learning and children’s perceptions of their competence were no less heritable than cognitive ability. Genetic factors explained approximately 40% of the variance and all of the observed twins’ similarity in academic motivation. Shared environmental factors, such as home or classroom, did not contribute to the twin’s similarity in academic motivation. Environmental influences stemmed entirely from individual specific experiences.

Copolycondensation of N,N’-bis(4-hydroxybutyl)-biphenyl-3,4,3',4'-tetracarboxylic diimide at 20 and 25 mol% with bis(4-hydroxybutyl)-2,6-naphthalate produces PBN-based copoly(ester-imide)s that not only crystallise but also form a (smectic) mesophase upon cooling from the melt. Incorporation of 25 mol% imide in PBN causes the glass transition temperature (measured by DSC) to rise from 51 to 74 °C, a significant increase relative to PBN. Furthermore, increased storage- (G'), loss- (G'') and elastic (E) moduli are observed for both copoly(ester-imide)s when compared to PBN itself. Structural analysis of the 20 mol% copolymer by X-ray powder and fibre diffraction, interfaced to computational modelling, suggests a crystal structure related to that of α-PBN, in space group P-1, with cell dimensions a = 4.74, b = 6.38, c = 14.45 Å, α = 106.1, β = 122.1, γ = 97.3°, ρ = 1.37 g cm-3.

Solvent-free desymmetrisation of meso-dialdehyde 1 with chiral 1-phenylethan-1-ol, led to preparation of 4-silyloxy-6-alkyloxytetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (+)-3a with a 96:4 d.r. Deprotected lactone (+)-19a and the related racemic lactones 16a-18a present a lactone moiety resembling the natural substrate of HMG-CoA reductase and their antifungal properties have been evaluated against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. These compounds were selectively active against B. cinerea, while inactive against C. gloeosporioides.

Intensities and self-broadening coefficients are presented for about 460 of the strongest water vapour lines in the spectral regions 1400–1840 cm−1 and 3440–3970 cm−1 at room temperature, obtained from rather unique measurements using a 5-mm-path-length cell. The retrieved spectral line parameters are compared with those in the HITRAN database ver. 2008 and 2012 and with recent ab-initio calculations. Both the retrieved intensities and half-widths are on average in reasonable agreement with those in HITRAN-2012. Maximum systematic differences do not exceed 4% for intensities (1600 cm−1 band) and 7% for self-broadening coefficients (3600 cm−1 band). For many lines however significant disagreements were detected with the HITRAN-2012 data, exceeding the average uncertainty of the retrieval. In addition, water vapour line parameters for 5300 cm−1 (1.9 μm) band reported by us in 2005 were also compared with HITRAN-2012, and show average differences of 4–5% for both intensities and half-widths.

Calcium (Ca) is essential for crustaceans, due to calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) deposition in the new exoskeleton to harden it. The purpose of this work was to study short term Ca balance in terms of dietary Ca ingestion in two phylogenetically related crabs (Superfamily Grapsoidea) showing different degrees of terrestrial adaptations: Sesarma rectum Randall, 1840 and Neohelice granulata (Dana, 1851). Dietary Ca ingestion was studied using purified diets with different Ca concentrations (0, 2.2 and 6.66% Ca), together with measurements of Ca excretion and Ca hemolymph levels. The results showed that both crabs had the same response to foods containing different levels of Ca, with both species eating more of the high Ca diet. However, S. rectum consumed more per mg body mass at all Ca concentrations (6 mg.g(-1) for S. rectum against 3 mg.g(-1) for N. granulata). Both species excreted/egested Ca differently: S. rectum excreted Ca proportionally to ingestion, whereas N. granulata maintained constant faecal Ca output at all dietary Ca levels. Moreover, Ca hemolymph levels for crabs fed the different diets were independent of dietary Ca. In conclusion, both S. rectum and N. granulata seem to regulate the consumption of diets containing more Ca, which suggests a fine balance for Ca intake.
