Infrared spectroscopy provides a valuable tool to investigate the spin-state transition in Fe(II) complexes of the type Fe(Phen)2(NCS)2. With progressive substitution of Fe by Mn, the first-order transition changes over to a second-order transition, with a high residual population of the high-spin state even at very low temperatures

CaSiO3:Eu3+ (1-5 mol%) red emitting phosphors have been synthesized by a low-temperature solution combustion method. The phosphors have been well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical spectroscopy. PXRD patterns reveal monoclinic CaSiO3 phase can be obtained at 900 degrees C. The SEM micrographs show the crystallites with irregular shape, mostly angular. Upon 254 nm excitation, the phosphor show characteristic fluorescence D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) of the Eu3+ ions. The electronic transition located at 614 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions, which is stronger than the magnetic dipole transition located at 593 nm corresponding to D-5(0) -> F-7(1) of Eu3+ ions. Different pathways involved in emission process have been studied. Concentration quenching has been observed for Eu3+ concentration >4 mol%. UV-visible absorption shows an intense band at 240 nm in undoped and 270 nm in Eu3+ doped CaSiO3 which is attributed to oxygen to silicon (O-Si) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) band in the SiO32- group. The optical energy band gap is widened with increase of Eu3+ ion dopant. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Exposure with above band gap light and thermal annealing at a temperature near to glass transition temperature, of thermally evaporated amorphous (As2S3)(0.87)Sb-0.13 thin films of 1 mu m thickness, were found to be accompanied by structural effects, which in turn, lead to changes in the optical properties. The optical properties of thin films induced by illumination and annealing were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Photo darkening or photo bleaching was observed in the film depending upon the conditions of the light exposure or annealing. These changes of the optical properties are assigned to the change of homopolar bond densities. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide, prepared from pre-exfoliated graphite, in acetamide-urea-ammonium nitrate ternary eutectic melt results in few layer-graphene thin films. Negatively charged exfoliated graphene oxide is attached to positively charged cystamine monolyer self-assembled on a gold surface. Electrochemical reduction of the oriented graphene oxide film is carried out in a room temperature, ternary molten electrolyte. The reduced film is characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), conductive AFM, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Ternary eutectic melt is found to be a suitable medium for the regulated reduction of graphene oxide to reduced graphene oxide-based sheets on conducting surfaces. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The synthesis of ``smart structured'' conducting polymers and the fabrication of devices using them are important areas of research. However, conducting polymeric materials that are used in devices are susceptible to degradation due to oxygen and moisture. Thus, protection of such devices to ensure long-term stability is always desirable. Polymer nanocomposites are promising materials for the encapsulation of such devices. Therefore, it is important to develop suitable polymer nanocomposites as encapsulation materials to protect such devices. This work presents a technique based on grafting between surface-decorated gamma-alumina nanoparticles and polymer to make nanocomposites that can be used for the encapsulation of devices. Alumina was functionalized with allyltrimethoxysilane and used to conjugate polymer molecules (hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) through a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles after surface modification. The grafting density of alkene groups on the surface of the modified nanoparticles was calculated using CHN and thermogravimetric analyses. The thermal stability of the composites was also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. The nanoindentation technique was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The densities of the composites were evaluated using a density gradient column, and the morphology of the composites was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. All of our studies reveal that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility and, thus, can potentially be used for the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices.

Site disorder of Co3+ ions in sputtered films of lithium cobaltite has been examined using infrared spectroscopy. Both transmission and reflectance modes have been used to characterize the nature of IR absorption. It is found that Co3+ in the sputtered films occupy two types of octahedral sites that differ in the nature of second-neighbor environment. Li+ ions exhibit two bands, which may arise from tetrahedral and octahedral site occupancies or from the presence of disordered regions in the films. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

We report high-pressure Raman, infrared (IR), and optical-absorption spectra of alpha-ZrMo2O8 (trigonal) up to 38 GPa at room temperature. The spectroscopic studies are consistent with diffraction results that show that alpha-ZrMo2O8 transforms into delta-ZrMo2O8 (monoclinic) at about 1 GPa and the delta phase converts to the epsilon phase (trielinic) at about 2.0 GPa. Optical-absorption measurements give an estimate of the band gap of about 0.6 eV at the lowest pressure. Band-gap changes with pressure are confirmed with visual observations. ZrMo2O8 changes from transparent at 5 GPa to yellow at 10 GPa, red at 18 GPa, and at about 30 GPa it becomes opaque.

Low-spin (LS) to intermediate-spin (IS) state transitions in crystals of LnCoO3 (Ln=La, Pr and Nd) have been investigated by variable temperature infrared spectroscopy. The spectra reveal the occurrence of the transition around 120, 220 and 275 K, respectively, in LaCoO3,PrCoO3 and NdCoO3, at which temperatures the intensities of the stretching and the bending modes associated with the LS state decrease, accompanied by an increase in the intensities of the bands due to IS state. The characteristic frequencies of both the spin states decrease with increase in temperature, showing anomalies around the transition.

Internal vibration modes of bis-(alkylammonium) tetrachlorometallates(II) and the corresponding alkylammonium chlorides have been studied through their phase transitions using infrared spectroscopy. The studies show that the vibrational states of alkylammonium ions change markedly through the phase transitions. Spectra of the analogous tetrabromometallates and alkylammonium bromides also confirm this behaviour. There is appreciable motion of the alkylammonium ions in the high-temperature phases; thus, CH3NH+3 ions are essentially undistorted in these phases. The low-temperature, ordered phases show evidence of stronger hydrogen bonding of the cations and for the presence of C—N torsional modes.

Tetragonal ZrO(2), synthesized by solution combustion technique, was found to be photocatalytically active for the degradation of anionic dyes. The compound was characterized by FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, BET surface area analysis, and zero point charge pH measurement. A high concentration of surface hydroxyl groups was observed over the catalyst, as confirmed by XPS and FUR. The photocatalytic degradation of orange G, amido black, remazol brilliant blue R, and alizarin cyanine green (ACG) was carried out with this material. The effect of pH, inorganic. salts, and H(2)O(2) on the activity of the catalyst was also studied, and it was found that the catalyst maintained its activity at a wide range of pH and in the presence of inorganic salts. Having established that ZrO(2) was photocatalytically active, mixed oxide catalysts of TiO(2)-ZrO(2) were also tested for the photocatalytic degradation of ACG, and the 50% ZrO(2)-TiO(2) mixed oxides showed activity that was comparable to the activity of TiO(2).

We have investigated the self-assembly of didecyldiselenide on gold containing mercury using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and infrared spectroscopy. The analysis of intensity and chemical shift of selected Se, Hg, and Au photoelectron lines on samples with increasing Hg content, show that didecyldiselenide adsorption strongly contributed to segregation of bulk Hg to the surface. The voltammetry results support this conclusion and suggest the formation of Hg-Au surface amalgam. The Hg surface segregation effect must be related to the restructuring of the surface following initial adsorption, and to the strong selenophilicity of Hg. The reflectance absorbance infrared spectroscopy studies show that the molecular layer on Hg-Au substrates lacks good order.

Thin films of ZrO2 have been deposited by ALD on Si(100) and SIMOX using two different metalorganic complexes of Zr as precursors. These films are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, infrared spectroscopy, and electrical measurements. These show that amorphous ZrO2 films of high dielectric quality may be grown on Si(100) starting about 400degreesC. As the growth temperature is raised, the films become crystalline, the phase formed and the microstructure depending on precursor molecular structure. The phase of ZrO2 formed depends also on the relative duration of the precursor and oxygen pulses. XPS and IR spectroscopy show that films grown at low temperatures contain chemically unbound carbon, its extent depending on the precursor. C-V measurements show that films grown on Si(100) have low interface state density, low leakage current, a hysteresis width of only 10-250 mV and a dielectric constant of similar to16-25.

The chemistry underlying the aqueous dispersibility of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) is a key consideration in the design of solution processing techniques for the preparation of processable graphene sheets. Here, we use zeta potential measurements, pH titrations, and infrared spectroscopy to establish the chemistry underlying the aqueous dispersibility of GO and r-GO sheets at different values of pH. We show that r-GO sheets have ionizable groups with a single pK value (8.0) while GO sheets have groups that are more acidic (pK = 4.3), in addition to groups with pK values of 6.6 and 9.0. Infrared spectroscopy has been used to follow the sequence of ionization events. In both GO and r-GO sheets, it is ionization of the carboxylic groups that is primarily responsible for the build up of charge, but on GO sheets, the presence of phenolic and hydroxyl groups in close proximity to the carboxylic groups lowers the pK(a) value by stabilizing the carboxylate anion, resulting in superior water dispersibility.

Copper dodecanoate films prepared by emulsion method exhibit superhydrophobic property with water contact angle of 155 degrees and sliding angle of <2 degrees. The films have been characterised by using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Surface microstructure of copper dodecanoate consists of numerous microscale papillas of about 6-12 mu m in length with a diameter in the range of 360-700 nm. The superhydrophobicity of the films is due to their dual micronano surface morphology. The wetting behaviour of the film surface was studied by a simple water immersion test. The results show that copper dodecanoate film retained superhydrophobic property even after immersing in water for about 140 h. The optical absorption spectrum exhibits two broadbands centred at 388 and 630 nm that have been assigned to B-2(1g) -> E-2(g) and B-2(1g) -> B-2(2g) transitions of Cu2+ ions, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum exhibits two resonance signals with effective g values at g(parallel to)approximate to 2.308 and g(perpendicular to) approximate to 2.071, which suggests that the unpaired electron occupies d(x2-y2) orbital in the ground state.
