Sympathetic hyperactivity (SH) and renin angiotensin system (RAS) activation are commonly associated with heart failure (HF), even though the relative contribution of these factors to the cardiac derangement is less understood. The role of SH on RAS components and its consequences for the HF were investigated in mice lacking alpha(2A) and alpha(2C) adrenoceptor knockout (alpha(2A)/alpha(2C) ARKO) that present SH with evidence of HF by 7 mo of age. Cardiac and systemic RAS components and plasma norepinephrine (PN) levels were evaluated in male adult mice at 3 and 7 mo of age. In addition, cardiac morphometric analysis, collagen content, exercise tolerance, and hemodynamic assessments were made. At 3 mo, alpha(2A)/alpha(2C)ARKO mice showed no signs of HF, while displaying elevated PN, activation of local and systemic RAS components, and increased cardiomyocyte width (16%) compared with wild-type mice (WT). In contrast, at 7 mo, alpha(2A)/alpha(2C)ARKO mice presented clear signs of HF accompanied only by cardiac activation of angiotensinogen and ANG II levels and increased collagen content (twofold). Consistent with this local activation of RAS, 8 wk of ANG II AT(1) receptor blocker treatment restored cardiac structure and function comparable to the WT. Collectively, these data provide direct evidence that cardiac RAS activation plays a major role underlying the structural and functional abnormalities associated with a genetic SH-induced HF in mice.

The technique based on sol-gel approach was used to generate silica matrices derivatives by hydrolysis of silane compounds. The present work evaluates a hybrid matrix obtained with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on the immobilization yield of lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescens. The resulting polysiloxane-polyvinyl alcohol (POS-PVA) matrix combines the property of PVA as a suitable polymer to retain proteins with an excellent optical, thermal and chemical stability of the host silicon oxide matrix. Aiming to render adequate functional groups to the covalent binding with the enzyme the POS-PVA matrix was chemically modified using epichlorohydrin. The results were compared with immobilized derivative on POS-PVA activated with glutaraldehyde. Immobilization yield based on the recovered lipase activity depended on the activating agent and the highest efficiency (32%) was attained when lipase was immobilized on POS-PVA activated with epichlorohydrin, which, probably, provided more linkage points for the covalent bind of the enzyme on the support. This was confirmed by determining the morphological properties using different techniques as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Comparative studies were carried out to attain optimal activities for free lipase and immobilized systems. For this purpose, a central composite experimental design with different combinations of pH and temperature was performed. Enzymatic hydrolysis with the immobilized enzyme in the framework of the Michaelis-Menten mechanism was also reported. Under optimum conditions, the immobilized derivative on POS-PVA activated with epichlorohydrin showed to have more affinity for the substrate in the hydrolysis of olive oil, with a Michaelis-Menten constant value (K-m) of 293 mM, compared to the value of 401 mM obtained for the immobilized lipase on support activated with glutaraldehyde. Data generated by DSC showed that both immobilized derivatives have similar thermal stabilities. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CoB, CO(2)B, CoSi, Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases can be formed during heat-treatment of amorphous co-Si-B soft magnetic materials. Thus, it is important to determine their magnetic behavior as a function of applied field and temperature. In this study, polycrystalline single-phase samples of the above phases were produced via arc melting and heat-treatment under argon. The single-phase nature of the samples was confirmed via X-ray diffraction experiments. AC and DC magnetization measurements showed that Co(2)Si and CO(5)Si(2)B phases are paramagnetic. Minor amounts of either Co(2)Si or CoSi(2) in the CoSi-phase sample suggested a paramagnetic behavior of the CoSi-phase, however, it should be diamagnetic as shown in the literature. The diamagnetic behavior of the CoB phase was also confirmed. The paramagnetic behavior of CO(5)Si(2)B is for the first time reported. The magnetization results of the phase CO(2)B have a ferromagnetic signature already verified on previous NMR studies. A detailed set of magnetization measurements of this phase showed a change of the easy magnetization axis starting at 70K, with a temperature interval of about 13K at a very small field of 1 mT. As the strength of the field is increased the temperature interval is enlarged. The strength of field at which the magnetization saturates increases almost linearly as the temperature is increased above 70K. The room temperature total magnetostriction of the CO(2)B phase was determined to be 8 ppm at a field of 1T. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glycerol-fatty acid esterification has been conducted with lipase from Penicillium camembertii lipase immobilized on epoxy SiO(2)-PVA in solvent-free media, with the major product being 1-monoglyceride, a useful food emulsifier. For a given set of initial conditions, the influence of reaction was measured in terms of product formation and selectivity using different fatty acids as acyl donors. Results were found to be relatively dependent of the chain length of the fatty acids, showing high specificity for both myristic and palmytic acids attaining final mixture that fulfills the requirements established by the World Health Organization to be used as food emulsifiers. The aim of this study was the glycerolysis of babassu oil catalyzed by immobilized lipase from Burkholderia cepacia, in a continuous packed-bed reactor. The best reaction conditions were previously established in batchwise via response surface methodology as a function of glycerol-to-oil molar ratio and reaction temperature. The reactor operated continuously for 22 days at 50 A degrees C, and during the first 6 days, no significant decrease on the initial lipase activity was observed. Monoglycerides concentration was in the range from 25 to 33 wt.%. Subsequently, a progressive decrease in the activity was detected, and an inactivation profile described by Arrhenius model estimated values of 50 days and 1.37 x 10(-2) h(-1), for the half-life and deactivation coefficient, respectively.

Two screenings of commercial lipases were performed to find a lipase with superior performance for the integrated production of biodiesel and monoglycerides. The first screening was carried out under alcoholysis conditions using ethanol as acyl acceptor to convert triglycerides to their corresponding ethyl esters (biodiesel). The second screening was performed under glycerolysis conditions to yield monoglycerides (MG). All lipases were immobilized on silica-PVA composite by covalent immobilization. The assays were performed using babassu oil and alcohols (ethanol or glycerol) in solvent free systems. For both substrates, lipase from Burkholderia cepacia (lipase PS) was found to be the most suitable enzyme to attain satisfactory yields. To further improve the process, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optima operating conditions for each biotransformation. For biodiesel production, the highest transesterification yield (>98%) was achieved within 48 h reaction at 39 degrees C using an oil-to-ethanol molar ratio of 1:7. For MG production, optima conditions corresponded to oil-to-glycerol molar ratio of 1: 15 at 55 degrees C, yielding 25 wt.% MG in 6 h reaction. These results show the potential of B. cepacia lipase to catalyze both reactions and the feasibility to consider an integrated approach for biodiesel and MG production. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The thermal expansion anisotropy of the V(5)Si(3) and T(2)-phase of the V-Si-B system were determined by high-temperature X-ray diffraction from 298 to 1273 K. Alloys with nominal compositions V(62.5)Si(37.5) (V5Si3 phase) and V(63)Si(12)B(25) (T(2)-phase) were prepared from high-purity materials through arc-melting followed by heat-treatment at 1873 K by 24 h, under argon atmosphere. The V(5)Si(3) phase exhibits thermal expansion anisotropy equals to 1.3, with thermal expansion coefficients along the a and c-axis equal to 9.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 11.7 x 10(-6) K(-1), respectively. Similarly, the thermal expansion anisotropy value of the T(2)-phase is 0.9 with thermal expansion coefficients equal to 8.8 x 10(-6) K(-1) and 8.3 x 10(-6) K(-1) along the, a and c-axis respectively. Compared to other isostructural silicides of the 5:3 type and the Ti(5)Si(3) phase, the V(5)Si(3) phase presents lower thermal expansion anisotropy. The T(2)-phase present in the V-Si-B system exhibits low thermal expansion anisotropy, as the T(2)-phase of the Mo-Si-B, Nb-Si-B and W-Si-B systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A combination of an extension of the topological instability ""lambda criterion"" and a thermodynamic criterion were applied to the Al-La system, indicating the best range of compositions for glass formation. Alloy compositions in this range were prepared by melt-spinning and casting in an arc-melting furnace with a wedge-section copper mold. The GFA of these samples was evaluated by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the gamma* parameter of compositions with high GFA is higher, corresponding to a range in which the lambda parameter is greater than 0.1, which are compositions far from Al solid solution. A new alloy was identified with the best GFA reported so far for this system, showing a maximum thickness of 286 mu m in a wedge-section copper mold. BACKGROUND: The hydrolysis of hemicellulosic material can provide liquor with high xylose concentration (which can be used as a fermentation medium) and phenolic compounds (Phs), potentially immunostimulating compounds. However, these hydrolysates must be detoxified in order to remove the Phs that can act as inhibitors in bioconversions. RESULTS: Aqueous two-phase systems composed of thermoseparating copolymers were used for rice straw hydrolysate detoxification. The hydrolysis process was able to promote chemical breakdown of 85% of the total hemicellulose content, 14% of the cellulose, and 2% of the lignin. The hydrolysate obtained contained 19.7 g L-1 of xylose and several phenolic compounds, such as vanillin, vanillic acid, ferullic acid, etc. The phenolics extraction was studied as a function of copolymer molar mass (1100 g mol(-1), 2000 g mol(-1) and 2800 g mol(-1)), their percentages (from 5% to 50%) and Phs initial concentration. Phenolic compounds extraction of around 80% was obtained under the following conditions: 20% (w/w) and 35% (w/w) copolymer 1100 g mol-1, 35% (w/w) copolymer 2000 g mol(-1) and 35% (w/w) copolymer 2800 g mol(-1) at 25 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated the viability of this method for the removal of Phs from rice straw hydrolysate, which has potential uses in bioconversion processes. The crystallisation behaviour for alloys in the Al-rich corner in the Al-La-Ni system is reported in this paper Alloys were selected based on the topological instability criterion (lambda criterion) calculated from the alloy composition and metallic radii of the alloying elements and aluminum Amorphous ribbons were produced by melt-spinning and the crystallisation reactions were analysed by X-ray diffraction and calorimetry The results showed that increasing the values of lambda from 0.072 to 0.16 resulted in the following changes in the crystallisation behaviour, as predicted by the lambda criterion (a) nanocrystallisation of alpha-Al for the alloy composition corresponding to lambda = 0 072 and (b) detection of the glass transition temperature, T(g), for the alloys with composition close to lambda approximate to 0.1 line. For compositions corresponding to both ends of the lambda approximate to 0 1 line (near the binaries lines) T(g) could be detected only in the ""intermediary"" central region, and the alloy we produced in this region was considered the best glass former for the Al-rich corner Also, except for the alloys with the highest NI content, crystallisation proceeded by two distinct exothermic peaks which are typical of nanocrystallisation transformation. These behaviours are discussed in terms of compositional (lambda parameter) and topological aspects to account for cluster formation in the amorphous phase. The present study sought to identify the perception of a given group of users of the Brazilian Public Health System (Sistema Unico de Saude) regarding organ donation and to implement an educational policy. Structured interviews were conducted with the aim of describing the profile of donor and nondonor subjects, the importance of organ donation, and the knowledge regarding donation and brain death. One hundred subjects were interviewed: 33% of them considered themselves potential donors; 40% were donors; 13% were nondonors; and 14% were ill-informed potential donors. However, only 40% of users have already officially expressed to their families a willingness to donate. Regarding their knowledge about the propitious moment for organ donation, only 64% of them associated the donation act with brain death. Although the present results revealed that users of the Brazilian Public Health System are prone to organ donation, there actually was a high amount of refusals, which may be due to lack of information and knowledge regarding the donation-transplantation process.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a key role in body temperature (Tb) regulation of mammals, acting on the brain to stimulate heat loss. Regarding birds, the putative participation of NO in the maintenance of Tb in thermoneutrality or during heat stress and the site of its action (periphery or brain) is unknown. Thus, we tested if NO participates in the maintenance of chicks` Tb in those conditions. We investigated the effect of intramuscular (im; 25, 50, 100 mg/kg) or intracerebroventricular (icv; 22.5, 45, 90, 180 mu g/animal) injections of the non selective NO synthase inhibitor L-NAME on Tb of 5-day-old chicks at thermoneutral zone (TNZ; 31-32 degrees C) and under heat stress (37 degrees C for 5-6 h). We also verified plasma and diencephalic nitrite/nitrate levels in non-injected chicks under both conditions. At TNZ, 100 mg/kg (im) or 45,90,180 mu g (icv) of L-NAME decreased Tb. A significant correlation between Tb and diencephalic, but not plasma, nitrite/nitrate levels was observed. Heat stress-induced hyperthermia was inhibited by all tested doses of L-NAME (im and icv). Tb was correlated neither with plasma nor with diencephalic nitrite/nitrate levels during heat stress. These results indicate the involvement of brain NO in the maintenance of Tb of chicks, an opposite action of that observed in mammals, and may modulate hyperthermia. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Optical monitoring systems are necessary to manufacture multilayer thin-film optical filters with low tolerance on spectrum specification. Furthermore, to have better accuracy on the measurement of film thickness, direct monitoring is a must. Direct monitoring implies acquiring spectrum data from the optical component undergoing the film deposition itself, in real time. In making film depositions on surfaces of optical components, the high vacuum evaporator chamber is the most popular equipment. Inside the evaporator, at the top of the chamber, there is a metallic support with several holes where the optical components are assembled. This metallic support has rotary motion to promote film homogenization. To acquire a measurement of the spectrum of the film in deposition, it is necessary to pass a light beam through a glass witness undergoing the film deposition process, and collect a sample of the light beam using a spectrometer. As both the light beam and the light collector are stationary, a synchronization system is required to identify the moment at which the optical component passes through the light beam.

This paper presents a compact embedded fuzzy system for three-phase induction-motor scalar speed control. The control strategy consists in keeping constant the voltage-frequency ratio of the induction-motor supply source. A fuzzy-control system is built on a digital signal processor, which uses speed error and speed-error variation to change both the fundamental voltage amplitude and frequency of a sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation inverter. An alternative optimized method for embedded fuzzy-system design is also proposed. The controller performance, in relation to reference and load-torque variations, is evaluated by experimental results. A comparative analysis with conventional proportional-integral controller is also achieved.

A heuristic algorithm that employs fuzzy logic is proposed to the power system transmission expansion planning problem. The algorithm is based on the divide to conquer strategy, which is controlled by the fuzzy system. The algorithm provides high quality solutions with the use of fuzzy decision making, which is based on nondeterministic criteria to guide the search. The fuzzy system provides a self-adjusting mechanism that eliminates the manual adjustment of parameters to each system being solved. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
