The study of random dynamic systems usually requires the definition of an ensemble of structures and the solution of the eigenproblem for each member of the ensemble. If the process is carried out using a conventional numerical approach, the computational cost becomes prohibitive for complex systems. In this work, an alternative numerical method is proposed. The results for the response statistics are compared with values obtained from a detailed stochastic FE analysis of plates. The proposed method seems to capture the statistical behaviour of the response with a reduced computational cost.

This paper presents new experimental measurements of spike-type stall inception. The measurements were carried out in the single stage Deverson compressor at the Whittle Laboratory. The primary objective was to characterize the flow field in the tip clearance gap during stall inception using sufficient instrumentation to give high spatial and temporal resolution. Measurements were recorded using arrays of unsteady pressure transducers over the rotor tips and hot-wires in the tip gap. Pre-stall ensemble averaged velocity and pressure maps were obtained as well as pressure contours of the stall event. In order to study the transient inception process in greater detail, vector maps were built up from hundreds of stalling events using a triggering system based on the stalling event itself. The results show an embryonic disturbance starting within the blade passage and leading to the formation of a clear spike. The origins of the spike and its relation to the tip leakage vortex are discussed. It has also been shown that before stall the flow in the blade passage which is most likely to stall is generally more unsteady, from revolution to revolution, than the other passages in the annulus. This work concerns the prediction of the response of an uncertain structure to a load of short duration. Assuming an ensemble of structures with small random variations about a nominal form, a mean impulse response can be found using only the modal density of the structure. The mean impulse response turns out to be the same as the response of an infinite structure: the response is calculated by taking into account the direct field only, without reflections. Considering the short duration of an impulsive loading, the approach is reasonable before the effect of the reverberant field becomes important. The convolution between the mean impulse response and the shock loading is solved in discrete time to calculate the response at the driving point and at remote points. Experimental and numerical examples are presented to validate the theory presented for simple structures such as beams, plates, and cylinders.

This paper presents a statistical approach to the electromagnetic analysis of a system that lies within a reverberant cavity that has random or uncertain properties. The need to solve Maxwell's equations within the cavity is avoided by employing a relation known as the diffuse field reciprocity principle, which leads directly to the ensemble mean squared response of the system; all that is required is the impedance matrix of the system associated with radiation into infinite space. The general theoretical approach is presented, and the analysis is then applied to a five-cable bundle in a reverberation room © 2013 EMC Europe Foundation.

This paper considers channel coding for the memoryless multiple-access channel with a given (possibly suboptimal) decoding rule. Non-asymptotic bounds on the error probability are given, and a cost-constrained random-coding ensemble is used to obtain an achievable error exponent. The achievable rate region recovered by the error exponent coincides with that of Lapidoth in the discrete memoryless case, and remains valid for more general alphabets. © 2013 IEEE.

An achievable rate is given for discrete memoryless channels with a given (possibly suboptimal) decoding rule. The result is obtained using a refinement of the superposition coding ensemble. The rate is tight with respect to the ensemble average, and can be weakened to the LM rate of Hui and Csiszár-Körner, and to Lapidoth's rate based on parallel codebooks. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the development of efficient algorithms for propagating parametric uncertainty within the context of the hybrid Finite Element/Statistical Energy Analysis (FE/SEA) approach to the analysis of complex vibro-acoustic systems. This approach models the system as a combination of SEA subsystems and FE components; it is assumed that the FE components have fully deterministic properties, while the SEA subsystems have a high degree of randomness. The method has been recently generalised by allowing the FE components to possess parametric uncertainty, leading to two ensembles of uncertainty: a non-parametric one (SEA subsystems) and a parametric one (FE components). The SEA subsystems ensemble is dealt with analytically, while the effect of the additional FE components ensemble can be dealt with by Monte Carlo Simulations. However, this approach can be computationally intensive when applied to complex engineering systems having many uncertain parameters. Two different strategies are proposed: (i) the combination of the hybrid FE/SEA method with the First Order Reliability Method which allows the probability of the non-parametric ensemble average of a response variable exceeding a barrier to be calculated and (ii) the combination of the hybrid FE/SEA method with Laplace's method which allows the evaluation of the probability of a response variable exceeding a limit value. The proposed approaches are illustrated using two built-up plate systems with uncertain properties and the results are validated against direct integration, Monte Carlo simulations of the FE and of the hybrid FE/SEA models. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

This study consisted of sampling benthic algae at 32 sites in the Gangqu River, an important upstream tributary of the Yangtze River. Our aims were to characterize the benthic algae communities and relationships with environmental variables. Among the 162 taxa observed, Achnanthes linearis and Achnanthes lanceolata var. elliptica were the dominant species (17.10% and 14.30% of the total relative abundance, respectively). Major gradients and principal patterns of variation within the environmental variables were detected by principal component analysis (PCA). Then non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS) divided all the sites into three groups, which were validated by multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP). Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that three environmental variables (TN, TDS, and TP) significantly affected the distribution of benthic algae. Weighted averaging regression and cross-calibration produced strong models for predicting TN and TDS concentration, which enabled selection of algae taxa as potentially sensitive indicators of certain TN and TDS levels: for TN, Achnanthes lanceolata, Achnanthes lanceolata var. elliptica, and Cymbella ventricosa var. semicircularis; for TDS, Cocconeis placentula, Cymbella alpina var. minuta, and Fragilaria virescens. The present study represents an early step in establishing baseline conditions. Further monitoring is suggested to gain a better understanding of this region.

This paper presents an achievable second-order rate region for the discrete memoryless multiple-access channel. The result is obtained using a random-coding ensemble in which each user's codebook contains codewords of a fixed composition. It is shown that this ensemble performs at least as well as i.i.d. random coding in terms of second-order asymptotics, and an example is given where a strict improvement is observed. © 2013 IEEE.

We report a quantum dot (QD) ensemble structure in which the in-plane arrangements of the dots are in a hexagonal way while the dots are also vertically aligned. Such a distinct lateral ordering of QDs is achieved on a planar GaAs(l 0 0) rather than on a prepatterned substrate by strain-mediated multilayer vertical stacking of the QDs. The analysis indicates that the strain energy of the lateral island-island interaction is minimum for arrangement of the hexagonal ordering. The ordered dots demonstrate strong photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature (RT) and the full width at half maximum of PL peak at RT is only 50 meV. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. A hierarchical equations of motion formalism for a quantum dissipation system in a grand canonical bath ensemble surrounding is constructed on the basis of the calculus-on-path-integral algorithm, together with the parametrization of arbitrary non-Markovian bath that satisfies fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The influence functionals for both the fermion or boson bath interaction are found to be of the same path integral expression as the canonical bath, assuming they all satisfy the Gaussian statistics. However, the equation of motion formalism is different due to the fluctuation-dissipation theories that are distinct and used explicitly. The implications of the present work to quantum transport through molecular wires and electron transfer in complex molecular systems are discussed. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We have developed a new self-assembled quantum dot system where InGaAs dots are formed on an InAlAs wetting layer and embedded in the GaAs matrix. The structure is realized by special sample designation and demonstrated by low-temperature photoluminescence measurements. In contrast to the traditional InAs/GaAs quantum dots dominated by the ensemble effect, the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence of such a quantum dot structure behaves as decoupled quantum dots. This can be attributed to the enhanced potential confinement for the dots provided by a higher-energy barrier in the wetting layer.

We study the photoluminescence (PL) properties of InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) by varying excitation power and temperature. Excitation power-dependent PL shows that there exists bimodal size distribution in the QD ensemble. Thermal carrier redistribution between the two branches of dots is observed and investigated in terms of the temperature dependence of their relative PL intensity. Based on a model in which carrier transfer between dots is facilitated by the wetting layer, the experimental results are well explained. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties of InAs/GaAs self-organized quantum dots (QDs) have been investigated at high excitation power. The fast redshift of the ground-state and the first excited-state PL energy with increasing temperature was observed. The temperature-dependent linewidth of the QD ground state with high carrier density is different from that with low carrier density. Furthermore, we observed an increasing PL intensity of the first excited state of QDs with respect to that of the ground state and demonstrate a local equilibrium distribution of carriers between the ground state and the first excited state for the QD ensemble at high temperature (T > 80 K). These results provide evidence for the slowdown of carrier relaxation from the first excited state to the ground state in InAs/GaAs quantum dots.
