Whether an abstract jurisprudence of law can be developed such that law is neutral with respect topositive choices, or whether law is necessarily informed by social facts, values and assumptions, with reference to the work of Jurgden Habermas, countering that author's claim of neutrality.

This paper reports on a study of the review process of the first iteration of a recentlyimplemented higher education program. Specifically, the paper discusses the inaugural review of a two-year graduate level pre-service teaching program at an urban Australian university. The aims of the study into this Master of Teaching program were twofold. First, it sought to gain an understanding of the strengths and limitations of the program from the perspectives of the staff members involved and to explore avenues for positive growth. Second, it examined the extent to which the application of Cooperrider, Whitney, Stavros and Fry’s (2008) Appreciative Inquiry (AI) framework can be used effectively in the review of higher education program reviews to foster connections for student success. The AI model promotes collegial reflective practice and the generation of positive resolutions and thus aligned with the purposes of the review which were to foster collaboration, strengthen staff morale and, subsequently, build a stronger program for students. This paper provides a perceptual account of the AI review process as reported by the three facilitators involved. The discussion and findings included in this paper contribute to international literature in the areas of higher education program evaluation, organisational reform and Appreciative Inquiry.

Cross-sectional studies have indicated that alterations in social functioning, particularly interpersonal functioning, are associated with the occurrence of psychotic symptoms and experiences at different levels of the extended psychosis phenotype (ranging from population psychometric expression of liability to overt psychotic disorder). However, more research is needed on the development of this association over time

This thesis includes a literature review that summarises the types of psychological research that have been conducted into gratitude, including the research conceptualising and developing assessments around it and exploring its associations with wellbeing, personality, social interaction, and health. The review focuses specifically on the research examining the relationship of gratitude to anxiety, depression and sleep, providing an outline of current theories about the relationship of positive affect to wellbeing, and a summary of the evidence to date. It is noted that there is comparatively little research on the impact of gratitude on anxiety and sleep but promising findings about the role of gratitude in the treatment of depression. Taken together, it is argued, the current research supported the need for trials of gratitude interventions specifically with clinical populations. Finally, the review looks at the literature of experimental interventions using gratitude. Particular emphasis is given to what has been learnt through these trials that might guide the focus and design of future research.

There follows the report of a randomized wait-list controlled pre-post trial of a gratitude diary intended to extend the research into the efficacy of gratitude diaries in the treatment of clinical populations with depression, anxiety and sleep difficulties. It was hypothesised that after completing a brief gratitude diary for three weeks, participants would have lower scores on measures of depression, anxiety, and perceived sleep difficulties, and higher scores on a measure of life satisfaction. These results were also expected to be evident at three-week follow-up. In a randomised waitlist-controlled trial with repeated measures pre-, post- and follow-up design, participants (N=109, from Australia) aged 18-64 years with a current self-reported diagnosis of an anxiety disorder and/or depression, took part in a self-help study via the internet. After completing the diary participants had lower scores on measures of depression, anxiety and perceived sleep difficulties and higher scores on a measure of subjective wellbeing than immediately pre-intervention. In addition, they had improved scores on a measure of stress. At three-week follow-up scores on depression and perceived sleep difficulties were no longer significantly different from pre-intervention, however improvements for subjective wellbeing and stress at post-intervention were maintained. At follow-up scores for anxiety had not only been maintained but had improved significantly beyond post-intervention results. This trial provides support for the use of gratitude diaries as a short-term intervention with a clinical population. Different patterns of anxiety and depression scores raise the possibility that gratitude interventions work differently to address depression and anxiety symptoms and provide support for the idea that gratitude interventions may have sustainable effects on anxiety symptoms.

Twelve pairs of adolescent students were linked to an older adult in aged care in this pilot study on intergenerational interaction. Triads met weekly for eight weeks with the aim of writing a Life Review Book for the older adult. At the conclusion of the study, participants were interviewed to gain an understanding of their experiences and meaning of the programme. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed four major themes: breaking down the stereotypes, recognition of heterogeneity, satisfaction from ‘making the effort’ and personal gain through making a contribution. Measures of psychological well-being were also administered pre- and post-delivery of the programme. This revealed that both age groups could and would complete all aspects of the programme. It was concluded from the findings that the intergenerational programme is feasible in the context of adolescent and older adult intergenerational relationships, and a potential influence on well-being for those who take part.

The nations of Scandinavia and Finland, or Nordic Europe, continue to provide living proof that economic prosperity can be combined with social equality and environmental responsibility. This book, written from an Australian perspective, explores previous outside policy interest in the Nordic nations and outlines some lessons which the English-speaking world, in particular, can learn now from the achievements of the four main Nordic European nations. In terms of income distribution these countries are still much more equal than Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Canada – and nearly twice as equal as the United States. Workforce participation rates are high in the Nordic nations but working hours remain within reasonable limits, enabling genuine work–life balance. Sweden has played a leading role in improving wellbeing, and lowering poverty, among children. Finland has achieved stunning success in schools since the 1990s. Denmark invests in comprehensive skills training as part of providing security, as well as flexibility, in people’s employment lives. Norway’s taxation approach and other measures ensure that its natural resources are used sustainably for the entire nation’s long-term wealth. All of these achievements are relevant to the policy choices for the future which Australia, and other English-speaking countries, can now make.

In this paper, a class of periodic Cohen-Grossberg neural networks with discrete and distributed time-varying delays is considered. By an extension of the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional method, a novel criterion for the existence and uniqueness and global asymptotic stability of positive periodic solution is derived in terms of M-matrix without any restriction on uniform positiveness of the amplification functions. Comparison and illustrative examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The symptoms of schizophrenia are frequently divided into positive and negative subtypes. It has been suggested that the negative symptoms are similar to those seen with prefrontal lobe cortical dysfunction. Several neuropsychological investigations of that hypothesis have been carried out, but none have directly compared a negative symptom group with a positive symptom group on the same test battery. In the present study, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS; Kay, Fiszbein, & Opler, 1987) was used to distinguish two groups of 20 patients with schizophrenia with predominant positive or negative symptoms. A battery of 7 neuropsychological tests considered capable of isolating prefrontal lobe dysfunction was administered. A significant group difference was noted on 6 of the tests; the negative symptom group performed much worse than the positive symptom group. The results of this study support the hypothesis that a relationship exists between the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and prefrontal lobe dysfunction.
